Proprietors and training instructors of driving schools in Nigeria have a significant role to play in road crash reduction through quality instructions to would-be drivers.

The Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu stated this at the 2022 Annual Capacity Building Workshop for Proprietors and Instructors of Driving  Schools in Nigeria held at Federal Cooperatives College, Eleyele  Ibadan.

Ali Biu, represented by the Oyo State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Joshua Adekanye, said the training was aimed at producing competent drivers in the country with an appreciable road safety mindset towards the realization of the Corps vision zero.

Speaking on the theme “Improving the Efficiency of Driving Schools in Curtailing Road Traffic Crashes”, Corps Commander Adekanye explained that since the inception of driving schools, road crashes had drastically reduced due to competent drivers.

The Oyo State Sector Commander noted that efforts are in top gear to ensure the free flow of traffic and reduce the rate of road crashes ahead of the festive period in the state.

He enjoined the drivers to desist from Overloading and overspeeding 

Also, speaking at the event, the Director, Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr Olayiwola T.G affirmed that driving schools operating had boosted the revenue generation in the state.

Two participants at the training, Pastor Olúwasina Joshua and Mr Kunle commended the organizers, adding that it would create more competent drivers and reduce road accidents on roads.

Participants from Oyo, Ondo, Osun and Kwara states attended the workshop.

Oyo State government has sealed six hotels, four commercial banks, three filling stations and seven companies for defaulting from paying the state’s land use required charges.

Speaking with newsmen after the exercise, the Chairman of the state Board of Internal Revenue, Aremo John Adeleke said the step was necessary to make business owners alive to their responsibilities to enable government provide security, infrastructure and other essentials necessary to make businesses thrive. 

Aremo Adeleke said the state government has given, as palliative, an additional 10% discount to complement the initial 25% discount on all taxes to ensure that the businesses stay afloat in the face of economic realities posed by the COVID-19 scourge.

He added that the government was poised to generate all taxes from business owners without any inimical effect on their ventures to sustain economic growth in the state reiterating that the enforcement would continue till the end of the year.

The chairman, Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, therefore, appealed to them to pay all taxes, levies and bills to government as there would not be economic growth when all taxpayers were not thriving in their businesses.

The Chairman, Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr. John Adeleke says the board will follow trajectory of double revenue disclosing that the state made two point seven billion naira last month.

He stated this during a press conference by Friends of Seyi Makinde held at the Ministry of Information, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Mr. Adeleke said the state would bring about a revolution in revenue generation through technology to collect revenue effectively and block leakages.

Mr. Adeleke while pointing out that the state has moved away from its usual revenue between 1.2bn and 1.3bn said government was supportive by bringing back majority of board of internal revenue staff redeployed three years ago to enhance revenue generation.

In a remark, the Coordinator Friends of Seyi Makinde, Chief Funsho Abiri said the group would continue to create and facilitate synergy for investment and engineered effort for economic growth of the state 

Chief Abiri said a paradigm shift had occurred in Oyo state with Governor Makinde in the saddle and residents of Oyo state should look forward to better days.
