President Muhammadu Buhari has sworn in six new permanent secretaries in the Federal Civil Service at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.

The swearing-in, which took place from 10:05 – 10:30 am on Wednesday, came shortly before the commencement of this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting.

The appointees and their states of origin are Mahmud Kambari (Borno State), Esuabana Nko-Asanye (Cross River), Lamuwa Ibrahim (Gombe), (Yakubu Kofar-Mata (Kano), Oloruntola Michael (Ogun) and Richard Pheelangwah (Taraba State).

While reading the citation of the new officers, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the event marked the culmination of a weeks-long prequalification exercise for directors by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

“Mr President, six persons have fulfilled the conditions as permanent secretaries after a selection exercise recently conducted for directors.

“This exercise involved competency tests and interactions with a wide range of stakeholders,” he said.

The swearing-in comes barely one month after Buhari approved their appointments.

On March 29, 2023, the Head of Civil of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, announced that the President approved the appointment of the six permanent secretaries in the Federal Civil Service following the recently conducted selection process.

Afterwards, the Federal Executive Council began in earnest with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Head of Civil Service, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, the President’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari and National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd.) in attendance.

Also present are the Ministers of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; Science and Technology, Olorunimbe Mamora; Finance, Zainab Ahmed; Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo; Agriculture, Mohammed Abubakar; Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire; Information, Lai Mohammed; Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite; Communication and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami; Sports, Sunday Dare, amongst others.

Meanwhile, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is away in the United States of America where he delivered a special lecture at the University of Pennsylvania advocating a just energy transition for Africa in the light of Climate Change.

He is expected back in Abuja later on Wednesday.

The Osun State Governor-Elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke has warned that any Coordinating Directors who accept a permanent Secretary appointment from outgoing Governor Gboyega Oyetola will exit the service from November 28th.

In a statement by his Spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the Governor-elect affirmed that taking such appointments at the last minute without due process indicated the readiness of those directors to exit the state service.

Senator Adeleke said the new permanent secretaries will be treated as political appointees who will automatically follow the outgoing Governor out of public service from November 28.

He advised that those who still want to remain in service of the Osun state government should decline the appointment from the outgoing Governor adding that, no waiver will be entertained in sacking from office any kangaroo permanent secretary.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has sworn in nine new Permanent Secretaries and four Principals-General with a call on them to ensure efficient and effective service delivery in their various Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Executive Chamber Governor’s Office, Oke Mosan Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun also urged the newly appointed Principal Generals to take necessary steps toward promoting the standard of education in secondary schools across the state.

Governor Abiodun who emphasized that his administration was committed to reforming civil service, said none of the appointees ever lobbied for the positions.

While emphasizing that the new appointees had been found worthy in character and capacity, Governor Abiodun pointed out that they had performed exceptionally well in the Assessment and Evaluation Programme, adding that the era of lobbying in Ogun State Civil Service was over.

He urged the new appointees to see their appointment as a call to greater service as higher dedication was required for the overall development of the state.

Ekiti State Government wants the civil servants to live up to the dictates of their status in service in order to meet the yearnings of the people and complement the policies and programmes of the present administration.

Governor Kayode Fayemi stated this at the swearing-in of the newly appointed Permanent Secretaries in Ado-Ekiti.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, Dr. Fayemi explained that civil servants were the engine room of the government, hence the need for them to justify their earning through efficient labour.

He noted that the appointment of the three Permanent Secretaries was in line with his plans to strengthen and reposition the civil service for optimal performance.

Governor Fayemi who warned that his government would not tolerate sycophancy among the civil servants promised to prioritize their welfare and that of the retirees.

The governor said his administration would not relent in its effort to restore the culture and values of the people by serving in honesty and sense of purpose.

The three new Permanent Secretaries, Messers Benjamin Afolabi, Adeleke Afolaju and Ayodele Adeyanju who could not hide their joy, appreciated Governor Fayemi for giving them the opportunity and promised to justify their new position through effective service delivery and service to humanity.

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has approved the appointment of three new Permanent Secretaries in the state civil service.

The new Permanent Secretaries are Mr. Adeleke Adefolaju, Mr. Afolabi Adebiyi and Mr. Ayodele Adeyanju.

A statement by the chief press secretary to the Governor, Mr. Yinka Oyebode says the appointment takes immediate effect.
