Committee on Works and Infrastructure in Ogun State House of Assembly led by the chairman, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju has commended the quality of construction works in some of the ongoing road projects in the state.

The committee however called on the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to strengthen its supervision on some other ongoing road rehabilitation projects to aid quality control.

Mr Adeyanju made the call while leading other members of the Committee, including Mr Yusuf Sherrif, Mr Lukman Adeleye, Mr Wasiu Ayodele, Mr Samsudeen Lawal, Dr Babatunde Tella, Mr Yusuf Amosun and Mr Wahab Haruna , during an oversight inspection of the projects.

They include: Adesanolu Road in Mowe-Ibafo, Magboro Road in Obafemi Owode Local Government, Siun on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, Lantoro Road,  as well as Saje- Elega road on Baptist Boys High School, in Abeokuta.

The Committee Chairman commended the quality and speed of work at Magboro, describing the rehabilitation as satisfactory, but expressed concern about the standard of rehabilitation in some other sites visited.

He noted that the absence of adequate drainage in some locations and the failure of contractors to properly capture the scope of work needed to be addressed.

He urged the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya to step up monitoring and supervision.

Mr Adeyanju believed strict oversight was crucial in ensuring timely completion of the projects in line with their specifications.

Ogun State government has denied receiving the sum of 37 billion naira from the Federal Government, as reimbursement of expenses on road projects carried out by the immediate past administration in the State.

The Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo stated this while reacting to online story that Governor Abiodun-led administration had received 37 billion naira from the Federal Government as expenses on Federal Road projects.

Mr Okubadejo explained that the immediate past administration had processed and received the said amount before the current administration came on board, adding that all efforts by the present administration to recover further road refunds from the Federal Government had not materialised. 

He pointed out that the amount was paid in two tranches of federal government Treasury Note instruments of 15 billion naira and 22 billion naira respectively. 

Mr Okubadejo noted that the first Treasury Note of 15 billion naira issued in December 2018 was discounted in January 2019 for 10 billion naira, while the second Treasury Note of 22 billion naira was discounted for 17 billion naira during the first quarter of 2019, thereby resulting in total financial charges of about 10 billion naira incurred by the State.

The Ogun state Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser, who advised journalists to always verify their facts before rushing to publish maintained that the incumbent administration would be opened and transparent.

Oyo State governor,Engineer Seyi Makinde has assured the residents of the state that majority of the road projects started by this government would be commissioned this year.

He stated this at the Inter-faith service to usher in the new year 2021 at the Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Governor Makinde listed the projects to include the 65km Moniya-Ijaiye-Iseyin road, the 21km Airport-Ajia-New Ife Express road with a spur to Amuloko and the 12km Apete-Awotan-Akufo road.

While pledging his administration’s commitment to continuous prompt payment of salaries, Governor Makinde noted that about 9.3 billion naira has been expended on the payment of pensions and gratuities owed by the previous administrations.

He also said deserving civil servants would have the opportunity to get up to grade level 17 with a promise that the state would address a backlog of outstanding promotions from 2016 to 2020 this year.

Governor Makinde urged civil servants and political functionaries to re-dedicated themselves to the service of the state.

The Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs Ololade Agboola urged civil and public servants in the state not to engage in activities which could tarnish the image of the state maintaining that every infraction would not go unpunished.

Some of the civil servants in an interview with Radio Nigeria expressed readiness to support the present government in the state.

Prayers were offered for the progress and development of the state.

Lawmakers in the Ogun State House of Assembly have called for even and fair distribution of road projects across the 26 State Constituencies of the state to allow democratic dividend reach the nooks and crannies.

The lawmakers including the Deputy Minority Leader, Abdul Bashir Oladunjoye, Deputy Speaker, Mr. Dare Kadiri, and OlaKunle Sobunkanla, among others, made the call while examining the 2021 budget proposals of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

They charged the ministry to step up measures towards ensuring the effective monitoring of contractors handling all roads to ensure compliance to quality control to ensure durability and value for money. 

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Ade Adesanya, said out of the total budget size of 40.81billion naira, a sum of 36.3billion naira was set aside for road construction and the remaining 4billion naira for rehabilitation across the three senatorial districts.

Engineer Adesanya explained that plans had already been concluded for the immediate commencement of construction works on the Atan-Agbara industrial 19.2km road, Ilishan-Ago-Iwoye, Ofada-Owode, Ikangba-Lagos Garage, Sango-Akute roads amongst others.
