The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Shittu Ibrahim, has been declared the winner of Saturday’s Saki West State Constituency rerun election for Oyo State House of Assembly.

The rerun was conducted in Odo-osun unit 007 in Ogidigbo area and Ogbalanja polling unit 019 in Sepeteri/Bapon registration area.

The results of the rerun at the two polling units indicated that Mr. Shittu polled 290 votes while Okedoyin had 330 votes.

Announcing the results, the INEC Returning officer, Professor Olusola Oyewo said Mr. Shittu Ibrahim polled 13, 850 votes to defeat Mr. Julius Okedoyin of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who had 13, 670 votes.

Mr. Shittu was declared winner of the March 18, 2023 election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but Mr Okedoyin and PDP approached the election petition tribunal, to challenge the results, claiming irregularities, overvoting, and non-compliance.

In a unanimous judgement delivered in September 2023, a three-member tribunal led by Justice Jubril Anaja, nullified Mr. Shittu’s election.

The tribunal held that over 1,000 voters were disenfranchised, while the margin of victory between the winner and petitioner was 270 votes.

In an attempt to overturn the tribunal’s decision, Mr. Shittu appealed the judgement and in November 2023, the Court of Appeal upheld the tribunal’s judgement and ordered a rerun in the two polling units.

Major gladiators in tomorrow’s APC gubernatorial election in Osun state have expressed readiness to participate in the contest.

The three contenders are the incumbent Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, a former Secretary to the state government Alhaji Moshood Adeoti and a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Lasun Yusuf.

Special Adviser to the Governor on political matters, Oluomo Sunday Akere told Radio Nigeria that Governor Oyetola had done well to deserve the ticket of the party for a second term.

However, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, the consensus aspirant of “The Osun Progressives, TOP, a group loyal to the Minister of Interior had addressed a news conference where he stated his readiness to participate in the primary but expressed doubt on the capacity of the APC national electoral panel to be fair to his team.

Alhaji Adeoti alleged that members of the panel were selected by Governor Oyetola, while he also claimed that the party’s members register that would be used for the election was not made available to members.

Before now, the incumbent Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola and his predecessor and Minister of Interior, Mr Rauf Aregbesola had been embroiled in a conflict that divided the party causing the Aregbesola loyalists to hold a parallel state congress.

The effort of the reconciliation committee set up by the national leadership of the party failed as the former Governor, Mr Aregbesola openly pronounced that division still existed in the party just a week after the committee visited the state.

Meanwhile, ahead of tomorrow’s primary, incumbent Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola who is seeking a second term in office had in the last three weeks visited all the thirty local governments areas of the state, where he asked members of the party to consider him for a second term in office.

Similarly, the former Secretary to the state government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti with the support of his sponsor, the Minister of Interior and former Governor of the State, Mr Rauf Aregbesola also held rallies in three local governments of the state.

However, the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Lasun Yusuf who was the first to obtain the APC governorship nomination form did not engage in any open campaign ahead of the primary.
