The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has crowned Miss Faith Odunsi of Ambassadors’ College, Otta, Ogun State “Mathematics Queen’’ for her outstanding performance in the 2020 National Olympiads Competition.  

Miss Odunsi solved 19 mathematics questions in 60 seconds, and became the best girl in mathematics competition.

26 students of both senior and junior secondary schools across the country were also given awards in different categories in mathematical sciences.

Speaking at the National Award Ceremony at Shade in Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, the Director/Chief Executive of NMC, Prof. Stephen Onah, commended the awardees for their outstanding performances.

Represented by Prof. Peter Onumanyi, Deputy Director, NMC, Onah said that the centre, would continue to strive to deliver on its mandate and encouraged the awardees not to lose interest in mathematical sciences.

According to him, the idea is to catch them young; to catch the children young, teach them to understand mathematics so that mathematics will not die with the elderly ones who are now weak.

“Let the younger ones continue to do well in mathematics, It is the responsibility of the centre to identify and encourage young talents in mathematical sciences and stimulate young Nigerian students’ interest in science subjects’’.

He also said that the centre was committed to encourage activities that would lead to improved teaching and learning of mathematical sciences in schools.

Prof. Onah, however, commended the Mathematics Queen, for distinguishing herself in a subject that is revered by most girls.

 The Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Dr Hamid Bobboyi, while commending the Centre for such initiative urged teachers to continue to work hard toward improving the teaching and learning of mathematical sciences in schools.

 Dr Bobboyi was represented by Mrs Ada Ogwuche, Deputy Director Teacher Development of the Commission said the extent to which students develop in mathematics largely determines the level of the national development potential in science and technology as a country.

The Mathematics queen appreciated the management of the centre for giving them such opportunity while attributing her success to hard work and support from her mathematics teacher.
