A boxer has been reportedly dead during a bout which took place at the Event Centre, Okpanam Road, Asaba on Monday.
An eye witness, who preferred anonymity, said the incident occurred when the victim suffered a hard punch on his neck and collapsed.
It was gathered that the victim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. All efforts to reach officials of the event proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
In a related development, two taekwondo athletes were on Monday rushed to the hospital while their fights had to be called off abruptly due to serious injuries sustained.
The incident occurred at the Taekwondo Hall, Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba during the Male, Welterweight Category of Taekwondo event between Lagos athlete, Ibrahim Idris and his colleague from Anambra and Akwa Ibom states.
An eyes witness, who was at the event venue, captured the moment when Akwa Ibom athlete collapsed as he was struck in the head by his opponent, Ibrahim Idris from Lagos state.
The game officials were proactive enough to attend to him before rushing him to the clinic for quick medical attention.
Also, the same Ibrahim Idris became fearful as he hit an Ànambra State opponent hard in the arm, leading to a terrible fracture while competing in the male, welterweight category. The victim was rushed to the hospital as the referee called off the fight.
