The Oyo State Police Command has said officers involved in an operation at The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic acted professionally and within established guidelines, following a video on X alleging misconduct.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Olayinka Ayanlade, said an internal review identified the officers in the footage and confirmed compliance with operational procedures.

He linked the police action to a January 7, 2026 cult clash on campus in which one student was shot dead.

He said operatives arrested another suspect who provided intelligence that led police, in collaboration with the institution’s management, to search certain hostels.

The command stated that the school had earlier petitioned for police intervention to forestall further violence.

It added that students cooperated during the hostel visit and that officers did not damage any property.

Police said they arrested three suspects and charged them to court, while releasing others after screening.

Authorities also dismissed claims that officers damaged a hostel ceiling, stating that available video evidence showed a student caused the damage.

The command warned against the spread of misinformation and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and the protection of lives and property.

His Imperial Majesty, Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa I), has urged Muslims and Christians to use the ongoing fasting seasons of Ramadan and Lent to pray for the progress and unity of Nigeria.

The appeal was contained in a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Solomon Olugbemiga, to mark the simultaneous commencement of the Ramadan and Lenten fasting periods.

The monarch reminded adherents of both faiths that Ramadan and Lent are rooted in sober reflection, forgiveness, kindness, discipline, peaceful coexistence and spiritual renewal.

He described the overlap of the two sacred periods as a divine signal for unity and religious harmony.

“The convergence of Ramadan and Lenten periods is not a mere coincidence but a divine arrangement to show the world the need for unity, love, tolerance and mutual understanding among the faithful,” the royal father said.

Oba Ladoja stressed that fasting goes beyond abstaining from food and drink, urging worshippers to also shun hatred, indecent conduct and harmful speech.

He called on residents of Ibadan, the Yoruba race and Nigerians at large to seize the moment to pray for leaders and for the nation, particularly amid prevailing security and socio-economic challenges.

The first-class monarch expressed appreciation for the support he has received from religious leaders and faithful since his enthronement as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, and urged continued prayers for unity, peace, security and economic revival in Ibadanland and across the country.

Gabon on Wednesday has placed ban on Facebook and TikTok, hours after the media regulator announced their suspension due to the risk of “conflict-inducing ” posts.

According to report, Gabon’s media regulator on Tuesday announced the suspension of social media platforms “until further notice”, blaming content posted online for stoking conflict and division in society.

The High Authority for Communication imposed “the immediate suspension of social media platforms in Gabon”, its spokesman Jean-Claude Mendome said in a televised statement.

He said “inappropriate, defamatory, hateful, and insulting content” was undermining “human dignity, public morality, the honour of citizens, social cohesion, the stability of the Republic’s institutions, and national security”.

The communications body spokesman also cited the “spread of false information”, “cyberbullying” and “unauthorised disclosure of personal data” as reasons for the decision.

“These actions are likely, in the case of Gabon, to generate social conflict, destabilise the institutions of the Republic, and seriously jeopardise national unity, democratic progress, and achievements,” he added.

The regulator did not specify any social media platforms that would be included in the ban.

However, the regulator said “freedom of expression, including freedom of comment and criticism,” remained “a fundamental right enshrined in Gabon”.

Less than a year after being elected, Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema has faced his first wave of social unrest, with teachers on strike and other civil servants threatening to down tools.

School teachers began striking over pay and conditions in December, and protests over similar demands had since spread to other public sectors — health, higher education and broadcasting.

In an uncommon alignment of religious calendars, millions of Christians and Muslims across the globe are simultaneously entering two of their most sacred seasons.

Lent and Ramadan, marking a period defined by fasting, reflection, prayer, and renewed spiritual discipline.

On Wednesday, the convergence became visible worldwide. For millions of Muslims, the day signalled the beginning of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the holiest period in Islam.

For many Christian denominations, it marked Ash Wednesday, the start of the 40-day Lenten season.

Though rooted in distinct theological traditions, the overlap highlights shared themes central to both faiths: self-restraint, repentance, generosity, and moral introspection.

The Beginning of Ramadan

From dawn to sunset each day, practicing Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs.

The fast is broken at sunset with iftar, often beginning with fruits and water and shared with family members, friends and neighbours.

Beyond fasting, Ramadan emphasizes increased prayer, recitation of the Quran, acts of charity (zakat) and personal reflection.

Mosques often host nightly prayers known as Taraweeh, drawing large congregations.

The month comprises of 29 or 30 days, concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a major Islamic festival marked by communal prayers and charitable giving.

The start of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the crescent moon.

This year, countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen, and Nigeria confirmed the beginning of Ramadan on Wednesday.

Other nations, such as Japan, Oman, Singapore, and Turkey, began observance a day later due to lunar sighting differences.

The Lenten Journey Begins

For Christians observing Lent, Ash Wednesday initiates a 40-day period of penitence leading up to Easter.

The season reflects the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the wilderness, as recorded in the Bible.

Ash Wednesday services are marked by the imposition of ashes on the foreheads of worshippers.

Lent traditionally involves prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

While fasting practices vary among denominations, many Christians abstain from certain foods, reduce luxuries, or commit to spiritual disciplines aimed at deepening faith and encouraging self-examination.

In his Lenten message for 2026 titled “Listening and Fasting: Lent as a Time of Conversion” Pope Leo XIV emphasized the spiritual significance of fasting beyond physical deprivation.

He described it as a means of recognizing deeper moral and spiritual hunger, urging believers to cultivate attentiveness to God and to others.

He also called for restraint in speech, encouraging Catholics to refrain from harmful or divisive language in personal interactions, workplaces, social media platforms, and public discourse.

The message framed Lent as an opportunity not only for personal sacrifice but also for ethical renewal.

While Lent and Ramadan differ in theology, duration, and practices, scholars note common ethical emphases.

Both seasons encourage adherents to exercise discipline over physical appetites, increase charitable giving, strengthen prayer life, and demonstrate greater empathy toward the poor and vulnerable.

In both religions, fasting is not viewed solely as abstention from food. Rather, it is intended to foster spiritual awareness, humility, and social responsibility.

Acts of charity hold particular importance:

Muslims are encouraged to give zakat and additional voluntary charity during Ramadan, while Christians traditionally emphasize almsgiving during Lent.

The simultaneous observance comes at a time of global uncertainty marked by economic pressures, political tensions, and humanitarian crises.

Religious leaders in both communities have framed these sacred periods as opportunities for self-examination and constructive engagement rather than division.

The overlap of Lent and Ramadan does not occur every year, as the Islamic lunar calendar shifts approximately 11 days earlier annually relative to the Gregorian calendar.

When such convergence happens, it draws attention to the rhythms of faith that shape the lives of billions.

For many observers, this shared season underscores how deeply religion continues to influence social life, ethical frameworks, and community identity worldwide.

As Lent and Ramadan unfold in parallel, they represent two distinct spiritual paths unfolding side by side.

Each rooted in centuries old tradition, each calling adherents toward reflection, restraint, and renewal.

The Federal Government has intensified its fight against devastating tomato and sugarcane pests, declaring the outbreak a national agricultural emergency.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, made the declaration during the flag-off of an Emergency Intervention Programme at the Federal Crop Production Technology Transfer Station in Dan Hassan, Kano State.

The initiative targets the rapid spread of Tuta Absoluta and the African Sugarcane Borer, two destructive pests threatening food production nationwide.

Senator Abdullahi warned that the infestations have slashed harvests, weakened farmers’ incomes, and endangered agro-industrial investments across Nigeria.

We must act decisively,” the Minister stated, outlining a comprehensive response that includes farmer sensitisation, training of extension workers, distribution of approved pest control inputs, and deployment of integrated pest management strategies.

He emphasized that tomato farming sustains millions of Nigerians—from smallholder farmers to processors, transporters, and market operators—making swift intervention critical to national food security.

Senator Abdullahi assured stakeholders that only genuine farmers would benefit from the agricultural inputs under the programme.

He stressed that strong Federal-State collaboration and farmer education remain key to preventing further losses.

Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on food security, the minister revealed that the planned release of improved tomato varieties in 2025 forms part of broader efforts to build resilience in the sector.

In a major policy shift, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi announced the upgrade of the Pest Control Division to a full-fledged Federal Department of Plant Health and Pest Control Services, a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s rapid response to crop threats.

In his remarks, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, affirmed that the state’s agricultural blueprint aligns with the Federal Government’s drive for food sovereignty and economic diversification.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, described the intervention as science-driven and strategic.

He explained that Kano was selected due to its pivotal role in irrigated agriculture and horticultural production.

Dr Ogunbiyi urged farmers to avoid indiscriminate pesticide use and strictly follow expert guidance to safeguard public health and the environment.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised the alarm over the staggering number of uncollected Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs in Oyo State, warning that the development threatens democratic participation

.Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Professor Adeniran Tella, disclosed that no fewer than 515,254 PVCs remain unclaimed across Oyo State, describing the figure as deeply concerning.

Prof. Tella made the disclosure in Oyo town during a Voter Education and Enlightenment Programme organised as part of the sensitisation campaign for the ongoing second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

Breaking down the figures, he revealed that 44,742 PVCs remain uncollected in four local government areas within Oyo Zone alone.

Atiba leads with 16,528 cards, followed by Oyo East with 11,599, Oyo West with 9,305, and Afijio with 7,310—representing 8.7 per cent of the total uncollected PVCs in the state.

To tackle accessibility challenges, Prof. Tella announced that INEC has deployed and commenced the rotation of its Voter Enrolment Device (IVED) machines across all 351 registration areas in Oyo State.

He said the machines began operation on February 9 and will run for 50 days, operating daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding weekends and public holidays, before suspension on April 10, 2026.

The REC explained that the CVR exercise targets Nigerians who have just turned 18, those who have never registered, individuals seeking transfer of voting location, and citizens with lost or damaged PVCs.

While urging eligible residents to take advantage of the exercise, Prof. Tella stressed that registration alone is not enough without collecting the PVC, which remains the ultimate instrument for exercising the right to vote.

Traditional rulers, community leaders, artisans, traders, religious leaders, youth and women groups, security agencies, and political stakeholders attended the event, which focused on mobilising citizens to play their part in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

A group of pensioners in Osun State has publicly rejected government claims that outstanding pension bond payments have been settled, intensifying pressure on the administration to clear arrears.

Speaking during a protest along the Osogbo-Gbongan road, the group’s spokesperson, Mr Awodele Olusola, declared that retirees owed between 2017 and 2025 remain unpaid despite official assurances.

He insisted that the government’s disbursements so far have only scratched the surface of the total debt.

Mr Olusola said Governor Ademola Adeleke began payments in 2023, but the amount released—less than one billion naira – reached only a negligible number of beneficiaries. He added that the subsequent release of ₦4.9 billion around April/May 2024 and another ₦3.3 billion in November 2024 covered only a fraction of retirees still awaiting their bond entitlements.

Retired workers in Osun State stormed the streets in a peaceful protest over years of unpaid entitlements and to resist any political comeback by former governor Rauf Aregbesola.

Members of the 2011/2012 Retired Public Servants Association of Osun State and the Unbonded Contributory Scheme Pensioners said they have battled unpaid gratuities and pension arrears for more than 13 years after leaving service.

Addressing journalists in Osogbo, the Chairman of the association, Mr. Omoniyi Ilesanmi, said the protest aimed to draw urgent public attention to policies and actions under Mr. Aregbesola’s administration that, according to the retirees, plunged workers and pensioners into prolonged hardship.

Mr. Ilesanmi alleged that officials withdrew contributory pension funds without due process and failed to remit them properly to Pension Fund Administrators, leaving many retirees in severe financial distress. He added that the introduction of half salaries and pensions for 32 months inflicted lasting economic embarrassment on workers and retirees across the state.

The protesters warned against what they described as a possible return of the former governor, insisting that unresolved pension liabilities must remain central to public discourse.

They, however, commended the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke for taking steps to clear arrears and improve workers’ welfare, while urging the government to accelerate relief for pensioners still awaiting full payment.

Efforts to obtain a response from Mr. Aregbesola were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The Nigeria Police Force, Osun State Command, has arrested a 54-year-old man, Ojo David Oluwasesan, over an alleged visa fraud involving ₦8,410,000.

The Osun State Command’s spokesperson, Mr. Abiodun Ojelabi, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Gotan, said the suspect defrauded victims under the false pretence of securing travel visas.

Mr. Ojelabi explained that the incident occurred in January 2025 when two complainants, introduced to the suspect by a friend, met him after he presented himself as a travel agent capable of processing travel documents but instead of delivering on the agreement, the suspect allegedly absconded with the money and became unreachable.

He advised members of the public to exercise caution when dealing with travel agents for visa processing to avoid falling victim to fraud.

Police have since charged the suspect to court, where authorities remanded him in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.

The Osun State Police Command has deployed armed tactical squads to border towns and villages across the state to prevent infiltration by bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements.

The deployment followed an earlier alarm raised by the State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, over fears that criminals fleeing from Kwara could seek refuge in Osun through the border communities.

The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, Mr. Ibrahim Gotan, confirmed this while speaking with newsmen said that comprehensive security measures had been activated.

According to Mr. Gotan, no fewer than 25 armed police officers, drawn from various tactical and special units, have been deployed to each border town and identified flashpoints, including Okuku, Ora Igbomina axis, and other porous communities linking the State with neighbouring states.

The State Police Commissioner assured residents that Osun remains one of the safest states in the South-West and across the country, emphasizing that the command is fully prepared to confront any security threat.

Mr. Gotan “The police, as the agency constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order, have taken proactive, necessary, and adequate steps to tighten security across the state, particularly in rural communities and border towns.”

We have deployed a significant number of policemen to border towns and villages across the state, there is absolutely no cause for alarm. My men are fully on ground, keeping a close watch with eagle eyes on the movement of people coming into and going out of Osun State.” He assures

Mr. Gotan who emphasised that security remains a collective responsibility, urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing useful, timely, and credible information that could assist the police in preventing crimes and apprehending perpetrators.
