Osun State Government has described the existing mega schools buildings in the state as mere display of architectural wizardry which has not added value to the quality of the Teaching-Learning process.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr Dipo Eluwole expressed this concern at a press conference to announce the State Education Summit to address challenges confronting the state’s education sector.

Mr Eluwole noted that the gigantic classrooms built by one of the  previous administrations in the state did not address the needs of the students, neither do the buildings make school attractive to students despite their architectural beauty.

The Commissioner argued that Osun state education sectorial problem was hydra-headed and required urgent overhaul, otherwise the damage could become irredeemable.

He highlighted some of the challenges confronting education sector in the state to include shortage of teachers and lectures, collapse of Infrastructure, non-functional school inspectorate services mandate of the state ministry of education, parents’ reckless abandonment of their roles as sponsors of their children’s education among others.

Mr Eluwole said, “Available records have it that the state is rated as being the most poorly rated in public examination performance index which puts Osun State among the last three in the nation for some time now. The state is also having the largest out-of-school children in the South West Nigeria and probably the least in adequate teacher-pupil-ratio. These are descriptions that were alien to the State education sector in the past, because the founding fathers bequeathed a befitting education legacy to the State.”

Giving insights into the state 2023 education summit billed to take place between August 22 and 24, Eluwole said the summit would address “the rebirth of learner-centered policies that will make schools and its environment child-friendly, conducive, safe and motivating not just an ostentatious display of architectural wizardry.”

He said there would be critical look into the standard required for recruitment of teachers, lecturers and education officers without interference from the political class among other solution-driven areas.

In a remarks, the chairman of the education summit, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, said, “The opening ceremony will hold at UNIOSUN Auditorium of and will be declared opened by the  Governor.

Professor Aremu gave assurance of the government’s determination to implement the recommendations of the summit, a development which he said influenced his accepting to serve on the summit committee.

The Federal Government has insisted that no federal university is allowed to charge tuition fees in the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr David Adejo said this at a public hearing by the House of Representatives ad hoc committee on student loans in Abuja on Tuesday.

Adejo said that the recent increase in charges by federal universities in the country was unfortunate.

What they collect is charges to cover the cost of accommodation, ICT, and power, among others. It is the Governing Councils of the Universities that have the power to approve such charges for them.

“The only university that increased charges after the signing of the student loans act is the University of Lagos.

“They came to the Ministry with a proposal to increase their charges because all Governing Councils were dissolved and we gave them approval.

“Immediately that was done, there was a resolution from the House stopping the increase in fees and the President also gave a directive stopping any increase in fees and that is where it is, even though several others have brought their proposal,” he said.

Adejo said that the charges collected by the institutions were used to pay for some of their services, including electricity bills.

He faulted claims that the signing of the Students’ loan act was responsible for some of the hike in the university charges.

Adejo said that despite the charges, the universities had not been able to meet up with some of their expenses.

He said that modalities had been put in place for the take-off of the student loans scheme in the 2023/2024 academic calendar.

Adejo said that President Bola Tinubu had given a directive that all necessary works must be completed on the modalities for the take-off of the scheme to enable its take-off in September.

The Chairman of the committee, Teseer Ugbor said the student loan was part of the palliatives by the federal government to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians and to ensure access to higher education by interested Nigerians.

He, however, expressed concern over the disbursement process, the recovery of the funds from beneficiaries as well as the possibility of some students not being able to access the loan.

He called for dialogue in the process of trying to amend the law to ensure that all Nigerian students interested in the loan benefitted from it.

The Presidency, on Wednesday, said that despite the hike in ancillary fees at several universities nationwide, tuition remains free in federal universities.

This comes barely five days after Federal Unity Colleges increased the school fees for new students from N45,000 to N100,000.

For the avoidance of doubts, federal universities in Nigeria remain tuition-free,” a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Dele Alake, read Wednesday.

The statement is titled ‘Federal Universities Remain Tuition-free.’

While acknowledging the rise in fees in federal universities in the country, the presidency insisted that these are ancillary fees and do not affect tuition.

We are aware that some universities have in recent weeks announced increases in the amount payable by students on sundry charges.” “However, the fact remains and we have confirmed that these are discretionary charges by each university for hostel accommodation, registration, laboratory and other charges. They are not tuition fees,” said the Presidency.

It said the authorities of these universities had explained the rationale behind these new fees, adding that the Bola Tinubu administration “remains committed to his promise of ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of the economic situation of their parents, has access to quality tertiary education.”

In addition to the Students’ Loans Scheme, under the Student Loans Bill signed into law by President Tinubu in June, which will go into implementation ahead of the next academic session in September, Alake said the Federal Government will also strengthen other mechanisms to support indigent students.

Parts of the government’s plans to make sure all diligent students complete their education on time, notwithstanding their parents’ financial situation, include work-study, merit-based scholarships and grants,” he revealed.

Staff and students of Osun State Polythecnic Iree today stormed the school in Protest of the suspension of the institution’s Rector, Dr. Tajudeen Odetayo, and his replacement with an alleged kinsman of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Radio Nigeria recalls that the state government through a letter dated July 11, 2023 signed by the Permanent Secretary, Osun Ministry of Education, M.K. Jimoh suspended Odetayo for alleged corruption, misappropriation of funds, and abuse of office and replaced him with one Mr Kehinde Alabi.

The protesters led by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic , ASUP,  joined by some students and non-academic staff shut the gates of Osun Poly, chanting anti-government songs.

The protesters carried placards with several inscriptions to press home their demands against the appointment of the new Acting Rector, accusing the governor of nepotism.

While addressing the crowd who had gathered at the entrance of the institution as early as 7:00am to protest the suspension of Dr Odetayo, the chairman of the Union Dr. Fatai Afolabi expressed discontentment over the action of the Governor.

Dr Afolabi described the suspension as an aberration and  against the guidelines, noting that, no committee has been set up to try the rector let alone find him guilty of any offense before he was asked to vacate his seat as the rector.

According to him, “The governor appointed someone who is not qualified as the Acting Rector of the institution. The person that the governor appointed contested for the post of deputy rector and he lost out.

“We have a deputy rector on the ground who should replace him if the rector is removed, that is what the guidelines say, and in the absence of the deputy rector, the most senior chief lecturer will be appointed as Acting Rector.

“The person that was appointed in ranking among the chief Lecturer, he is not ranked from one to fifty. The only thing that qualifies him is that he is from Ede. The governor is nepotistic with appointments and dealings in Iree Poly. The governor wants to put Ede indegenes everywhere in the school which is not possible. Is it only Ede that voted for him? Everybody voted for him.

He continued, “Dr. Odetayo who was removed was alleged of corruption among others, he was never made to face any panel or inquiry, he was never issued query. The main reason for his removal was that he was invited by the Chief of Staff to the governor who instructed him to make the person they appointed as Acting Rector now the deputy rector. The order given to the rector goes beyond the capacity of the rector because it is by election, when they voted the anointed candidate of the Chief of Staff got 19 votes while the winner got 51 votes who is the most senior chief lecturer on campus.

“The state of things in Iree now is that all academic activities including the ongoing exam stands suspended until the governor do the otherwise which is doing the right thing.”

“We want to make it known to the governor that not only Ede people that voted for him, they could be the one that financed the governor’s election but not the only one that voted him to power.

“Mr Alabi loss the election as the deputy Rector why was he appointed.

Speaking with newsmen, the Commissioner for Education, Osun State, Mr Dipo Eluwole said that the suspension of the Rector was as a result of the allegations leveled against him.

Mr Eluwole said “We received a letter in this office about the financial recklessness of the Rector, so the next thing for us is to investigate.

“The government is yet to set up the panel because we just got a letter recently and when we know this will generate issues in the institution the government have to take step to suspend the Rector pending the outcome of the investigation of the panel that will be set up.

“The position cannot be in a vacuum. We have to appoint an acting rector to act pending the outcome of the investigation of the panel.

Members of St. Patrick Grammar School, Ibadan Old Boy’s Association 89 Set, have honoured their Vice Principal with pomp at its second annual Reunion ceremony held in Ibadan 34 years after graduation from the school.

The 84-year-old retired Vice Principal, Mrs. Moriyike Laosun, was showered with accolades, gifts and award plaques by her students who are now accomplished men in their various fields of endeavours, appreciating her immense contributions towards their academic pursuits despite their youthful exuberances.

Mrs. Laosun, who could not hold her excitement, expressed happiness at the metamorphosis of the secondary school boys whom she parted with about three and a half decades ago, saying, the occasion had made her fulfilled and many years younger than her age.

“I want you to say thank you to my boys. You’ll forever remain my boys. Some of my friends use to ask me how do you cope with them. St. Patrick’s boys, they’re very naughty but I was able to cope with them, the boys put eyes on me and sometimes, during inter-house Sports, they’ll release the names of those who are meant to be killed and my name will be on top of the list until later, they cut shot on me, I am still alive today.”

“You were mentioning you have Doctors, I said yes that’s what I expected, you have engineers, I said yes, you have politicians of note, I said yes and you have a processor here, I was happy, I am ten feet tall today for the joy I have today for what my boys have been able to acquire in the world. St Patrick’s boys will never be backbenchers.”

Mrs. Laosun, decried the level of decadence in secondary schools nowadays and blamed parents for eroding the system with their inordinate interest thereby relegating the standard of education.

“If a teacher beats a child, the parents will follow them to school and blame the teacher which doesn’t happen in our own time. The fear of teachers is absolutely lacking in the students. Government should place some punishments on earring parents to sustain the standard of education “

Earlier in his address, President, St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Ibadan Old Boy’s Association 89 Set, Reverend Niyi Dahunsi, who explained that the association had honoured its school’s former principal last year, noted that it was imperative to recognise their support system during their sojourn in the school.

“Seeds have been sown academically, morally, mentally, we’ve also had a good social closeness for five years when we were in form one to five and we left school 1989, that’s about 34 years ago and just last year, we decided to come together again so that we can begin to celebrate one anothers successes, progress if there areas in which anybody needs help, we help and we contribute our quota, we’ve become family and we can never unfriend that.”

In a keynote address, a member of the association, Mr. Adebowale Oderinde who spoke on the topic: “Developing innovative ideas after 50 as a Man’ urged men to pay close attention to their health so as to be able to cope with the challenges of old age.

“Let the men take good care of themselves, your health is important, take care of your family, learn to forgive your family and friends and eat healthily. It’s very common that you’re going to face challenges in life but how you handle it will make you a successful man.”

Two members of the association, who spoke with Radio Nigeria Messrs. Paul Oyelade and Oluelwatoying Akinpade, advocated the return of a process-oriented system from the current product-oriented system been practised in the present-day educational system.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the planned increment of school fees by tertiary institutions in the country.

In a statement signed by the National PRO, Giwa Temitope and released on Saturday, NANS declared that the government’s action is “insensitive” and “embarrassing”.

The association also stressed that the government has what it takes to fund education and make it accessible, noting that the introduction of the student loan scheme is a sham and a bait to make Nigerians accept fee increments.

The association stated that there is no justification for an increase in school fees across tertiary institutions and Unity schools.

It demanded that the increase in school fees should be suspended, adding that those who have implemented the policy should reverse it immediately.

“We must state categorically that there is no justification for increment in school fees across our tertiary institutions and even Unity schools. Our demand is clear and simple; the attempt to increase school fees must be suspended. And, those that have floated it must reverse it with immediate effect.”

NANS also called on Nigerian students to prepare for an all-round protest until the Federal Government reverses the policy, similar to the one during the prolonged ASUU strike.

“We call on Nigerian students to brace up and be prepared for an all-round protest as was done during the prolonged ASUU strike until the Federal Government reverses this policy.

“The increment of school fees at UNILAG and the planned increment across tertiary institutions in the country has shown this administration to be a very insensitive one.

“As a matter of fact, it is most ridiculous and embarrassing that the government will be introducing fees increment without thinking of rescuing over 133 million Nigerian people from multidimensional poverty.

“Increment in fees across tertiary institutions will only complicate the poverty situation of the country and also increase the number of out-of-school children.

“As an association, we believe that the Nigerian government has what it takes to massively fund education and make it accessible. In fact, the student loan that was introduced by the Federal Government is nothing but a sham and bait to lure the Nigerian people into accepting increments in fees payable.

“Beyond the fact that the terms of the loan are ridiculous, history has taught us that not every applicant will be considered. And, even if all of them were to be considered, it still does not justify an increment in an economy that tops the unemployment index. Rather than give loans, the government must provide grants and scholarships for students.”

Amidst escalating cost of living in the country, some educational institutions have announced significant increases in tuition and other fees, while others are planning to do so in order to cope with the effects of the removal of subsidy on petrol.

This is putting parents on the edge as the current academic session draws to a close for primary and secondary schools, while the calendar of tertiary institutions has been impacted by incessant strikes and crises.

On Friday, primary and secondary schools in Lagos and some other states brought the academic calendar to a close and some informed parents and guardians of pupils to prepare for a significant rise in fees when the next academic session begins in September.

Leading the school owners who had announced tuition fees increment was the Federal Government, which through the Federal Ministry of Education announced an upward review of school fees for new students into its secondary schools otherwise known as Federal Unity Colleges from N19,000 to N100,000.

This was contained in a directive from the office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department of the ministry with reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I, dated May 25, 2023, and addressed to all principals of Federal Unity Colleges.

According to the circular titled, ‘Approved fees/ charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st term) for new students’, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, new students are expected to pay N100,000 instead of the previous N45,000.

The latest fee/charge increment will affect virtually all aspects and activities of the schools, including tuition and boarding, uniform, textbooks, exercise books, prospectus, caution fee, identity card, stationery, clubs and societies, sports, extra lesson and insurance, among others.

“Please be informed that the ministry has approved only the under-listed fees and charges for all Unity Colleges,” the memo read in part.

Similarly, the management of the University of Lagos, Akoka, reportedly increased the fees for undergraduates in the institution.

This was contained in a statement dated July 20, 2023, by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, UNILAG branch, following a meeting with the top management of the institution.

The union said in the statement that fees would be increased for undergraduate students in the next academic session.

Students of the institution previously paid N19,000 for tuition, but the management has now fixed N190,250 for students studying Medicine, while for courses that require laboratories and studios are to pay N140,250.

According to SSANU, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, met with representatives of the three non-academic staff unions on Thursday to discuss issues concerning members’ welfare.

“During the meeting, the proposed fees for undergraduate students of UNILAG were disclosed. Students without lab and studio use will pay N100,750, those with lab use will pay N140,250 and the College of Medicine will pay N190,250,” the statement said.

The SSANU representative at the meeting, Rasaki Yusuf, however, asked for a rebate for staff members with children in the university, but the vice-chancellor insisted that the new charges were set nationally and could not be modified for specific categories of students.

Ogunsola, however, gave the option of staff paying in instalments but with a condition to pay up one month before final exams.

The UNILAG management later issued a statement confirming the development.

The statement said, “After careful deliberations with its stakeholders (students, parents/guardians, staff unions and alumni, among others), the University of Lagos Management has reviewed the obligatory fees (mandatory charges for an academic session/year) of new and returning undergraduate students of the university.

“The adjustment in fees, which will take effect from the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic session, is in view of the prevailing economic realities and the need for the university to be able to meet its obligations to its students, staff and municipal service providers, among others.

“It is also pertinent to note that the university has not increased its obligatory fees in recent years. Management, therefore, seeks the kind understanding and support of students and other stakeholders with the assurance of its commitment to ensuring that students get the best learning experience.”

Similarly, the President, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Chief Yomi Otubela, said the removal of subsidy on petrol had hit the education sector hard and the effects would be felt more in the months ahead.

According to him, most private school owners are battling with the withdrawal of pupils and the resignation of teachers, who are increasingly finding it difficult to commute to school.

Otubela said “We have so many parents who are withdrawing their children from school for their inability to meet up with the cost of transporting them to school or even paying the school fees. We have teachers who have tendered their resignation because their take-home pays can no longer take them home and back to school.

“We have instances where vendors, who supply one material or the other, have increased the cost of their materials. For instance, publishers have taken the cost of books from N25,000 to N65,000 for all books needed on average in all classes. We have instances where the use of technology is becoming obsolete because people can no longer fuel their generators and there is a limit to what the solar system can power.

“As it is now, we have a report of so many schools selling off their buses because the cost of patronising buses to parents has tripled and there is so much uncertainty as to what the actual price will be with the rising inflation. Generally, there is so much uncertainty within the private school sector. We consulted experts and all of them are beginning to see where many private schools will cease to exist and some will reduce the quality of education while looking for ways to weather the storm.”

Authorities of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, have renewed their commitment to ensuring compliance with the approved dress code for students coming into the University campus.

The Management has reiterated that the move was aimed at ensuring strict compliance with extant regulations and principles guiding the conduct of students within the institution’s campus.

According to a statement by the Registrar of the University, Dr. ‘Bola Adekola, the Senate of FUNAAB had taken the decision on the issue of Dress Code at a meeting held on Tuesday, 14th December, 2021 and communicated same to the University Community via a circular FUNAAB/REG.11/VOL. III/52 of December 16, 2021.

It indicated that Farm Practical Year students should wear the approved green jumpsuit, rain-boot and hand gloves for their convenience and personal safety on the farms during the Farm Practical Year.

Describing the Senate’s decision as the final position on the subject matter, the statement by the University Registrar also emphasised the need for facial identification of all students at all times within the University Community.

The statement condemned the attempts by those described as misguided faceless individuals, reportedly sponsoring some online reports on religious sentiments to disrupt the endearing peace, harmony and the prevailing congenial academic environment of the University.

It noted that a judgment of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abeokuta on suit number FHC/AB/FHR/12/2022 dated May 19, 2022 by Justice O. Oguntoyinbo had ruled that the sole issue of use of face veil also known as ‘Niqob’ was resolved in favour of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta as the Respondent in the matter.

The statement showed that the court also ruled that fundamental human rights of freedom was not absolute in the instance while the FUNAAB management had urged aggrieved persons to approach the courts for a comprehensive interpretation of the judgement, stating that nowhere in the world could anyone enjoy public service anonymously without the consent and approval of the service provider and religion had nothing to do with the issue.

The Oyo State government, on Tuesday, said it may start enforcing the Examination Malpractice Act, as enshrined in the 1999 Federal Constitution.

The Act stipulates a three years’ jail term or fine of N100, 000 or both for anyone caught and found guilty of compromising exam ethics in the country.

Speaking in Ibadan, with journalists, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Post-Primary Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, Pastor Akinade Alamu said the State Government has so far adopted administrative measures in addressing examination malpractices in the State.

He declared that with the present administration’s policy on education, the war against examination malpractice is being won.

Recall that earlier in the year, the Oyo State Government suspended teachers on the premise of examination malpractices during the West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Pastor Alamu, who expressed joy over support by the Nigeria Union of Teachers and other teaching bodies, emphasized that the state government would not hesitate to ensure that the laws guiding the conduct of public exams in the country takes its full course.

Alamu, who said examination malpractice had reduced significantly since the Seyi Makinde administration came on board, added that the government aims at the total elimination of exam malpractice in the state.

Speaking on granting the erring teachers pardon, Pastor Alamu said the Oyo State Government has received appeals from Traditional rulers, as well as stakeholders in the Education sector.

He however said the Oyo State Government has not taken final decision on whether to pardon the erring teachers.

“We have received appeals from Traditional rulers and the Nigeria Union of Teachers. But we have very high regard for NUT, a very noble union of professionals. We respect the leadership of NUT and its members; NUT is a union that gave maximum cooperation to Governor Seyi Mkainde’s administration, since its inception”, he said.

Pastor Alamu berated past administrations in the State for taking issues of examination malpractices with levity, adding that the Seyi Makinde administration has taken the bull by the horn.

“When we came on board, we decided that this problem should be nipped in the bud and we started sanctioning the erring teachers and principals. So we have done it for 2-3years now, suspending teachers that were involved and we want you to understand that examination malpractice is criminal”.

“At the end we took administrative steps to address the issues and when we did it, there had been appeals and pleadings from various quarters”, he said.

We respect Nigerian Teachers and they are very good partners of TESCOM and Oyo State Government, we have seen that NUT has been a very responsible Trade Union, with this we may consider their request to pardon the teachers.
