The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has called on political and religious leaders to promote unity among the nation’s ethnic groups.

The former Vice President gave the charge in a statement he signed to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps.

The NYSC scheme was established on May 22, 1973, by the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon (retd.) to foster national reconciliation following a brutal civil war between the Nigerian State and the Republic of Biafra that claimed millions of lives, particularly children.

“I use this opportunity to call on politicians, religious leaders, and other opinion leaders to continue to encourage unity among the people because disunity feeds hate, which in turn, feeds conflicts. We should always make utterances that promote love and unity and avoid statements that stoke bitter divisions and intolerance.

“As we mark the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Service Corps in Nigeria, we are reminded that the scheme remains one of the most significant policies ever conceived in the country. We must also acknowledge and give credit to General Yakubu Gowon for introducing this brilliant idea aimed at consolidating national unity after the bitter memories of the tragic Nigerian civil war.

“Unity, which is also my agenda as a politician, is essential to building a strong country because a divided country is a weakened country.

“At the same time, I urge a review of the mandate of the NYSC scheme to reflect the demands of the current reality,” the statement read.

The retired Justice stated this during a sensitization and advocacy programme organized by OYACA for staff and students of Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora at the institution’s main hall.

Retired Justice Esan explained that students would thus imbibe the rules within and outside the school environments.

She said academic institutions were positioned to play key roles in preventing corruption as they educate future leaders and impart values of integrity through set examples.

The retired jurist pointed out that anti-corruption education was one of the most effective ways to increase public awareness and improve public attitudes towards corruption, saying that corruption is widespread in Nigeria because the majority has a poor understanding of how it could negatively impact the society.

“Anti-Corruption education is one of the most effective ways to increase public awareness and improve public attitudes towards corruption, one of the main reasons why corruption is so widespread is that most people have a poor understanding of what it means and how it can negatively impact society, by educating people about the causes and consequences of corruption, as well as preferring solutions for combating it, we can help to build a more informed and anti-corruption society.

“Academic institutions are uniquely positioned to play a key role in preventing corruption, not only do they educate future leaders, they also have a unique opportunity to impart the values of integrity through the examples they set by maintaining a high standard of transparency, accountability and ethical conduct.

“Therefore staff and students of higher institutions should abstain from unethical conducts such as sex for grades, admission racketeering, etc, by ensuring that all staff members are held to these standards, academic institutions can play an important role in creating an honest and transparent environment that discourages corruption and promotes trust among stakeholders.”

Justice Eni Esan advised students to work towards discouraging their parents from engaging in sharp practices, imbibe the values of integrity that will make them not engage in examination malpractices, and should report any corrupt practices they observe to OYACA.

Responding, the Provost of the College, Professor Akinola Akinlabi who was represented by the Registrar, Mr Rasheed Adeniji, appreciated OYACA for deeming it fit to extend the sensitization programme to the institution, while promising to imbibe the core values of morality teachings.

The Registrar pointed out that the College had imbibed precautionary steps to avoid corrupt practices by staff and students of the institution and hailed the Oyo State administration under Governor Seyi Makinde for establishing the agency.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Monday said it would commence the release of results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Board on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

This was contained in the minutes of the meeting held at the end of an emergency management meeting held over the weekend in Abuja.

In the minutes which was made available to our correspondent on Monday morning, the board noted that the delay in the release of results was due to the fact that it wanted to ensure that all necessary screenings were concluded.

“The Board would be releasing the results of candidates, who have taken the examination so far on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2023. The Board had delayed the release to ensure that all necessary screening are concluded besides ensuring that the mean and standard deviation are reasonably obtained before
releasing these results.

“As candidates check their results on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2023, those who sat the examination but had challenges without being aware of such, would not see their results but would instead see their notification for rescheduled examination,” it said.

Similarly, the examination body also noted that three categories of candidates who missed their examinations had been rescheduled for mop-up examinations.

“All candidates, who could not sit the 2023 UTME within their scheduled time owing to no fault of theirs, would be rescheduled to take the examination on Saturday, 6th May, 2023.

“Candidates under these categories are principally those who were verified at their centres but could not sit the examination; those who could not be biometrically verified, and those with mismatched data,”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that JAMB rescheduled the conduct of the 2023 UTME from Tuesday, April 25, 2023, to Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

The board had informed Nigerians that it would be using some novel innovative methods in conducting the exercise with the aim of completely arresting incidences of examination infractions.

“This has been largely achieved as the exercise recorded the lowest reported cases of infractions but with equally emerging challenges on account of human negligence which led to some candidates not being able to sit the examination on the first day. This notwithstanding, out of the 1,586,765 candidates that indicated an interest in sitting the examination, only 80,166 are now outstanding.

“On the first day of the 2023 UTME, a number of candidates in some centres could not sit the examination as well as in some centres in subsequent days due to diverse reasons. Though a reasonable number of them have been rescheduled and have taken the examination, some are yet to take their examination.

“As part of the decisions reached at the end of an emergency management meeting held on Sunday, 31st April 2023, the Board has fixed Saturday, 6th May 2023, for all categories of candidates who have not sat their examination, as listed below, to take their examination,” the board said.

He made the appeal while delivering his introductory address at the swearing-in ceremony of 2023 Batch A, Stream 2 Corps members held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin

Mr Oche, who explained that a rain storm wreaked havoc on the facilities of the camp a few weeks before the start of the orientation exercise, appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to construct an auditorium for the corps members so that their training would go unhindered during the rainy season.

“I want to strongly appeal to the state government to help us construct an auditorium where corps members can be receiving lectures. Presently we make use of the pavilion which is not ideal for such a programme. Moreover, the roofs of our pavilion were removed by the windstorm a few weeks ago which after we just managed to patch one side. This makes it difficult for us to hold any programme when rain falls. We equally request assistance in the area of hostel accommodation. The existing ones are inadequate for the population of corps members always deployed to the state.”

Declaring the orientation course opened, the Oyo State Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Seun Fakorede, reiterated the government’s support for the scheme and urged the corps members to participate fully in the training to equip them for the task ahead.

“It is heartwarming that the National Youth Service Corps has succeeded in its quest to mitigate the high rate of unemployment bedevilling the country through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (SAED). I enjoin you to embrace the programme and equip yourself at no cost with skills that will make you stand the test of time.”

To this end, I want to encourage you to be open-minded and assimilate all the training you will be receiving in this camp to make your stay in Oyo State a very productive and memorable one as you discharge your

assignment with all seriousness.”

The National Orientation Agency, NOA, Oyo State has distanced itself from the publication making the round and fuelled by some mischief makers, that the state government is recruiting unemployed graduates for job placement through the agency.

This is contained in a statement issued by the agency’s State Director, Mr. Kayode Odedokun, and signed by the Head of Media, Mr. Isiaka Kehinde.

The statement reads in part: “This is to inform the public that the attention of our Agency has just been drawn to the ongoing spurious publication making the rounds and fuelled by some mischief makers, that the state government is recruiting unemployed graduates for job placement through our agency”.

“While it can’t be disproved that Oyo State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency has a very cordial working relationship with the state government, this doesn’t confer on us the duty of its recruitment agents, therefore we urge the good people of Oyo State to disregard the rumour, lest they fall into the hands of scammers.”

“While thanking the Oyo State government and the good people of the state for their constant support and cooperation, we wish them compliments of Ramadan Season.”

The Oyo State Government has vowed to prosecute those it described as undesirable elements, who perpetrate recruitment scams with the sole intent of defrauding the innocent public.

This is coming on the heels of a purported list circulating on social media claiming the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, has started its recruitment process.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, advised the public to be vigilant and never deal with scammers who pose as recruitment agents for the board.

Dr. Adeniran said the management has also begun moves to identify those perpetrating these fraudulent activities, promising that when caught they will be handed over to appropriate quarters.

He also cautioned job-seekers saying, “Please shun any purported list, circulating on social media claiming we are recruiting”.

The statement added that OYOSUBEB would go through a due and transparent process, in its recruitment exercise.

“On repeated occasions, we have cautioned the general public to be vigilant and circumspect not to deal with scammers who pose as recruitment agents or staff members of OYOSUBEB. They collect huge sums of money from unsuspecting victims with the promise to provide them employment at OYOSUBEB,” the statement reads.

“Today, we saw a list of names published by some fraudulent people, claiming those are the people invited for the OYOSUBEB job interview. On the list, their interview was scheduled for Tuesday, April 18, and Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at an unknown venue. We are on it and anyone caught disseminating this kind of information, will be dealt with, according to the law”, Adeniran said.

Therefore, Dr. Adeniran emphatically stated that OYOSUBEB is not conducting any recruitment at the moment, and importantly that it does not conduct recruitment exercises through back door channels.

“When OYOSUBEB plans to expand its workforce and seek to recruit competent hands to carry out the task of improving the State’s education sector, the public can be rest assured that we would follow appropriate channels and processes in doing so; including advertisements on public channels of communication, followed by rigorous screening, interviews and examination exercises”, Dr. Adeniran said.
