Napoli captain, Giovanni Di Lorenzo has affirmed that Victor Osimhen will give his best for the team tomorrow and can help Napoli defeat Real Madrid.

The Partenopei will host the La Liga giants tomorrow (Tuesday) for the second round of the UEFA Champions League group stage fixtures, and the captain says Osimhen is in great shape to beat Madrid’s defense.

Speaking to pressmen ahead of tomorrow’s clash, Di Lorenzo stated that Osimhen’s desire to succeed at the club has not changed.

He said, “Nothing has changed for us. His relationships inside the dressing room, his behaviour, and his desire to give the best for this team have not changed.

“He is always available for his teammates, as you saw in the game [against Lecce]. To us, he is the same Osimhen. A great player who gives his best and will continue doing the same tomorrow.”

The Nigerian international is gradually leaving the past behind him, as he was involved in a series of controversies with the club in the past two weeks.

He suffered a three-game goal drought, failed to convert from the spot kick, and thereafter ‘threatened’ to take legal action against the club for posting a mockery video of him on their TikTok platform.

However, the 24-year-old responded with a goal against Udinese last week and extended his streak against Leece on Saturday.

Four-time Olympic champion Simone Biles says “there is no room for racism in any sport” after a video went viral on social media of a black girl not being given a medal at an Irish gymnastics event ceremony.

The incident occurred at a Gymstart event in Dublin in March 2022 when a line of children were awarded medals but the black girl did not receive one.

However a video of the incident has emerged in recent days and been watched millions of times on social media, drawing criticism.

Biles saw a video of the incident and posted

it “broke my heart”.

On Friday, in response to the video, Gymnastics Ireland issued a statement saying they received a complaint alleging racist behaviour in March 2022 from the parents of the girl.

It said there was independent mediation leading to a “resolution agreed by both parties in August 2023”.

As part of Gymnastics Ireland’s investigation into the incident, the official involved “expressed deep regret for what they described as an honest error”.

Gymnastics Ireland said a written apology from the official was issued. It also said the girl did get her medal afterward the ceremony.

However, the Irish Independent on Sunday, quoting the girl’s mother anonymously, said she believes Gymnastics Ireland has failed to publicly apologise and she has taken the matter to the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation in Switzerland.

The Irish Independent also reported that the mother is concerned the family will be a target for racist abuse and wants the video removed by social media companies.

The newspaper reported that the family believed their daughter was ignored at the ceremony because she was black.

“We are often the only black family at gymnastics events and this has been very hurtful for us,” the mother told the newspaper. “Now eight million people have seen the video. From Pakistan to Ethiopia they can see this was wrong but Gymnastics Ireland still can’t accept it and say sorry.”

The Irish Independent also said Biles originally sent a video message to the girl, offering her support last year.

We are aware of a video that has been posted on social media relating to an incident that took place over 18 months ago at a GymSTART event in March 2022 for which we received a complaint from the parents of one of our members. Subsequently both parties agreed to enter mediation which was independently facilitated by Sports Disputes Solutions Ireland as per our policy/procedure which led to a resolution agreed by both parties in August 2023″.

Radio Nigeria Ibadan gathered that a formal complaint has been lodged at the Police Station on Saturday.

“Case is now reported to the Garda, apparently they saw the videos too, however case was never reported and if no report they can’t t investigate. All racism must be reported so it can be followed up and added to issues migrants face. They are opening a formal investigation.Thank you everyone and let’s continue to fight racism and educate racists. I will update as I hear anything back”.

Luis Rubiales has entered a Madrid court to answer a criminal complaint over kissing Spanish player Jenni Hermoso, days after resigning as head of Spain’s football federation.

He said nothing as he walked into the national court to face accusations of sexual assault and coercion.

Mr Rubiales, 46, insists he had the footballer’s consent as she celebrated Spain winning the Women’s World Cup.

The court will decide whether the case goes to trial.

Spanish state prosecutors have formally lodged a criminal complaint against the former president of the football federation (RFEF), which will be heard by Judge Francisco de Jorge.

Spain won the Women’s World Cup in Australia on 20 August, but the team’s victory has been overshadowed ever since by Mr Rubiales’s actions during the celebrations after the final whistle.

He has maintained that when he held her head in his hands and kissed her on the lips it was mutual and consensual.

Hermoso, 33, says that the kiss was not consensual. Prosecutors submitted her initial complaint of sexual assault and added one of coercion, arguing that he had put pressure on the Spain forward to come to his defence amid uproar in the days after the kiss.

Spain’s left-wing government reformed laws on consent in the past two years after a notorious gang-rape case in 2016 that led to five men being cleared of rape.

Under the so-called “Only Yes is Yes” law, Mr Rubiales could face a fine or even a jail sentence if the case goes to trial and he is found guilty of sexual assault.

Captain Olga Carmona scored the winner in the first half as Spain won the Women’s World Cup for the first time, beating England 1-0 in the final.

La Roja, robbed of some of their best talent by a mutiny against coach Jorge Vilda only a few months ago and thrashed 4-0 by Japan in the group stage, outplayed England to deservedly claim their first major title in only their third World Cup in in front of 75,784 fans at Stadium Australia on Sunday.

Aitana Bonmati and Teresa Abelleira ran the game from the Spanish midfield and the margin of victory would have been greater had England goalkeeper Mary Earps not saved a second-half penalty.

England’s second defeat in 39 matches since Sarina Wiegman took over as coach denied them the chance to add a maiden world title to the European Championship crown they won last year.

The first Women’s World Cup final not to feature either the United States or Germany started at quite a pace with England just about enjoying the upper hand in the battle of two first-time finalists.

Forward Lauren Hemp continued where she left off in the semifinal against Australia and screwed the ball towards goal in the fifth minute before clipping a shot off the bar 12 minutes later.

Spain responded immediately, with Carmona overlapping down the left flank and driving the ball across the goal but teenager Salma Paralluelo was unable to make contact and Alba Redondo’s shot from the far post was well saved by Earps.

La Roja took the lead just before the half-hour mark after England were dispossessed in midfield and Abelleira curled a sublime crossfield pass to Mariona Caldentey, who slid the ball forward to Carmona.

The left back drove into the area and let fly with an angled shot which flew past the fingertips of Earps and into the far corner of the net.

The goal appeared to knock the stuffing out of England and Spain had the better of the rest of the half with Paralluelo pinging a shot off the post just before the break.

England have shown their adaptability throughout the tournament and Wiegman switched from three to four at the back after the break, while bringing Lauren James on for Alessia Russo up front.

Spain’s game, by contrast, has been unchanging and they continued to drive forward with Caldentey bringing a fine save out of Earps with a shot from the edge of the box in the 50th minute.

Bonmati hit the bar with a long-range effort just after the hour mark and the Spanish appealed vociferously for a handball against Keira Walsh during their next visit to the England box.

James had a shot tipped over the bar by Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll in the 75th minute but Spain were not content to sit on their lead and Earps had to be at her best to deny Ona Batlle as the clock hit the 90th-minute mark.

England threw all 11 players forward for a corner deep into stoppage time but Coll, playing only her fourth international, came out confidently to gather the ball.

Officials indicated 13 minutes of injury time at the end, but if anything, it was Spain who looked the more likely to score as England’s dreams of a first World Cup melted away.

“It was a really tough game, we knew it would be tricky, England have a great team, but I think it was our game,” Carmona told Spanish national broadcasters La 1.

“We had the feeling we were going to do it.”

A visibly disappointed England captain Millie Bright shared her views post-match.

“It’s hard. They are a fantastic team. We weren’t at our best in the first half. In the second half we put the fight in. We just couldn’t finish it today. This is the hard part of football,” she said.

“Emotions are high, huge amount of disappointment. We failed. In a couple of weeks when it settles in we will be really proud. We had a lot of critics at the start of the tournament. We bounced back. To be able to stand here today is special.”

Kosovare Asllani’s stunning second-half strike sealed victory for Sweden as they beat Australia to finish third at the Women’s World Cup.

She rifled in a shot from the edge of the area to add to Fridolina Rolfo’s first-half penalty as Sweden won the bronze medal match for the second World Cup in succession.

Despite the defeat, this represents co-hosts Australia’s best ever World Cup finish but the Matildas were unable to end on a high.

Rolfo’s penalty gave Peter Gerhardsson’s side the lead after a video assistant referee (VAR) check confirmed that Claire Hunt had clipped Stina Blackstenius in the box after 26 minutes.

And on the hour mark, Blackstenius played a superb square ball to Asllani, who stroked in a first-time shot to double their lead.

Australia capture the nations’ imagination

The Matildas’ achievement in finishing fourth cannot be understated in a country where football is not the number one sport.

Their 3-1 semi-final defeat by England was the most watched TV event in Australian history with 11.15 million viewers tuning in.

But they seemed deflated on Saturday and put in a tired performance, with even their talisman Sam Kerr struggling to make an impact on the game – in fact, she had the fewest touches of any player on the pitch in the first half.

Their best chances fell to Hayley Raso and Clare Polkinhorne, but they were both denied by Sweden goalkeeper Zecira Musovic.

Australia, who had only ever reached the quarter-finals once previously, in 2015, were the first hosts to reach the semi-finals since United States in 2003.

Their efforts in this tournament have certainly captured the hearts of the fans in green and gold and the hope will be that that leaves a lasting legacy.

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan says she’s ready to defend her title after the news of her clearance by the Disciplinary Tribunal on allegations of doping violations.

Amusan set a new world record when she ran 12.12 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Oregon, USA.

The 26-year-old hurdles queen maintained she’s not a drug cheat and will always be an “ally of clean sport”.

Amusan was provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) in May for missing three out-of-competition tests within a 12-month period.

On Thursday, the Disciplinary Tribunal ruled that Amusan has not committed any offence and her “provisional suspension has now been lifted with immediate effect.”

“This morning, (evening in Nigeria) I found out that the Independent Tribunal that heard my case has ruled that I did not violate the whereabouts rules and as a result, I will not be sanctioned and none of my results will be precluded,” Amusan said in an Instagram post.

“I am thrilled to put this behind me, and I look forward to defending my title at the World Championships. I generally have been and consistently will be an ally of clean sport.

“To my five fingers; God is the greatest and genuinely appreciate you all for the support.”

The 2023 World Athletics Championship will take place between August 19 and 27 in Budapest, Hungary.

Governor Hope Uzodimma has described Imo talents as resourceful to the nation.

He made this known while receiving Super Falcons of Imo origin: Chiamaka Nnadozie, Desire Oparanozie, Osinachi Ohale and Tochukwu Oluehi at the Government House Owerri.

The Imo governor commended the Super Falcons of Nigeria for their outstanding performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was an impressive outing. He, therefore, urged them not to be deterred by the outcome of the competition.

As an encouragement to the quad, the Governor graciously approved the allocation of one plot of land to each within the city of Owerri. According to the Governor, this is the little way by which the Government shows appreciation for their patriotism and support for their career.
