The death toll in the floods which struck Indonesia last week has now climbed to more than 500, with rescue workers still battling to reach affected areas.

The floods, which were caused by a rare cyclone that had formed over the Malacca Strait, have hit three provinces and impacted some 1.4 million people, according to the government’s disaster agency.

Another 500 people remain missing, while thousands more have been injured.

Indonesia is just one part of Asia which has been hit with torrential rain and storms in recent days, with Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka all also reporting deaths.

In Indonesia, the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra have been hardest hit, with thousands still cut off and without critical supplies.

Arini Amalia, a resident from Aceh’s Pidie Jaya Regency, told the BBC the floodwaters had been “like a tsunami”.

“According to my grandmother, this is the worst, the worst in her life,” Amalia said.

Aid workers have been trying to reach people on foot and by motorcycle, as many roads are impassable to larger vehicles.

Pictures from the region show bridges washed away, roads covered in mud and debris, and logs piled high.

At West Sumatra’s Twin Bridges landmark, where floodwaters swept through and deposited enormous amounts of mud and debris, Mariana watched as excavators cleared the roads, hoping they would find her missing family members including her 15-year-old son.

“Watching the excavators, seeing how thick the mud is… I keep thinking, what condition will my child be in when they find him?” she said.
”Will he still be intact?
My mother, my brother-in-law…
Looking at how it is here, maybe their faces won’t even be recognisable any more.”

16 days of activism are days set aside by the United nations to address gender based violence against women.

‎Going by the theme of this year’s event, “Unite to end digital violence against girls and women” panellists at a programme organized by the office of the wife of the governor of Oyo state, Chief Mrs Tamunominini Makinde gave some ideas on how to navigate the tech world and proffer answers to questions which had lingered when it comes to the digital world.

‎The panelists maintained that despite digital academic support that students enjoy from the internet, added that when handled carelessly the side effects might do more harm than good.

‎One of the panelists, A Senior Special Assistant on Information Technology, ICT to governor Seyi Makinde, Mr Adebayo Akande, said students must be enlightened that the internet would always remember the good, the bad and the ugly content, hence the need for them to be careful of what they post on the social media.

‎Mr Akande who said people should get along with the pace of advancement in social media world so as not to be caught unawares of fraudulent activities maintained that the student should take steps to protect their identity, never send nude pictures to anyone and should be very sensitive when it comes to the digital world.

‎Another panelist, a Former Commissioner for Justice in Oyo state. Professor Oyelowo Oyewo, SAN, reiterated the need to employ more counsellors in schools as students warm up to anyone with listening ears.

‎Professor Oyewo also advocated training on digital for the teachers, explaining that they would be able to track the activities of the students on the internet.

‎While describing the cell phone as a computer, he noted that the present generation is already migrating from pen and paper to digital hence the need for parents and teachers to be abreast of happenings in the digital world.

‎Earlier the Commissioner for women affairs and social inclusion, Mrs Toyin Balogun in an address of welcome, gave some examples of gender based violence victims which the ministry had handled thereby confirming that the behavior still exists, therefore calling on the students to speak up and speak out, whenever they were being molested.

‎Mrs Balogun said the ministry would train women and girls in the first quarter of next year on digital world.

‎Chief Mrs Makinde in an address, cautioned the girls from been careless on social media, saying they should learn from past experiences where women and girls have been robbed of their dignity, health and future, by digital gender based violence.

‎”The internet is a powerful tool that connects our world and helps us learn, work, and communicate, but the internet is also a pitfall. The internet is a platform where sometimes, women and girls are harassed, bullied, blackmailed and exploited”

‎”Digital violence, just like physical violence, causes deep emotional and psychological harm. Digital violence silences voices, destroys confidence, and in some cases, leads to tragedy. Imagine the trauma of a woman or girl whose private photos are shared online without her consent. How would she face society after such a shame? Sadly, some girls have committed suicide because of the shame that followed”.

‎”So let us all work together to end digital violence. As teachers, please teach your students how to stay safe online. Encourage them to raise any questions or concerns with respect to internet use. Encourage them to report any form of digital harassment or bullying without fear. Create safe spaces in your classrooms where girls can speak freely. And most importantly, promote kindness, respect, and digital responsibility among your students at every given opportunity. As young people, you must remember that the internet never forgets; every post, every comment, every image has lasting consequences; therefore be mindful of what you put on the internet”

‎”However, our work is far from being done. Gender-based violence, whether digital, emotional, sexual, economic, or psychological, continues to rob women and girls of their health, dignity, and future. It leaves behind lasting scars, unwanted pregnancies, and in some cases, even death”

‎”Therefore, as we mark the 16 days of activism today, let us renew our commitment to end all forms of violence against women and girls, whether offline or online. Let us unite to build a society where every woman and girl in Oyo State can live free from fear”
‎” Finally, let me use this opportunity to appreciate the Oyo State Government, under the leadership of the Executive Governor, His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, for the continuous support given to my office in organizing the annual 16 Days of Activism”

‎Earlier, The students had held a walk ,with her Excellency and some states commissioners holding placards with inscriptions such as “‎Oyo State says no to child abuse”, “every voice counts”, stop domestic violence, say no to rape.

‎Every year, the world marks the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign – which begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25th November to 10th December to raise awareness and inspire action to combat gender-based violence.

The Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo in Osun State has announced the death of a former Osun All Progressives Congress Chairman and the 30th Owa of Igbajo, Oba Adegboyega Famodun.

A statement signed by Prince Adekunle Famodun, on behalf of the family and obtained in Osogbo on Sunday, said he “passed away on Friday, November 28, 2025, after a brief illness.”

The family added that Famodun, who died at the age of 67, was married and survived by children.

“As you may recall, Oba Adegboyega Famodun was installed and presented with the staff of office on November 24, 2022, by the former Governor of Osun State, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola.

“Although his position was disputed by a white paper issued by Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State High Court reinstated him on January 30, 2025,” the statement read in part.

It continued, “During his reign, Oba Famodun worked tirelessly to unite the people of Igbajoland, promoting peace, understanding and progress.

“His leadership and vision have left an indelible mark on the community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. He will be remembered for his peaceful nature, exceptional wisdom and tireless efforts to promote community development”.

Famoodun served as Osun APC chairman before his appointment and installation as monarch.

It was reported on March 12, 2024, that the Osun State Government approved the appointment of Prince Ademola Makinde as the new Owa of Igbajo, replacing Famodun.

The announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi.

But the Osun State All Progressives Congress, in a statement by its Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, faulted the government’s decision, saying the stool was still a subject of pending lawsuits.

The Owa of Igbajo stool became vacant in November 2022 when the Governor Ademola Adeleke-led Peoples Democratic Party government removed Prince Gboyega Famoodun, who had been installed by the immediate past governor, Adegboyega Oyetola of the APC.

“The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has resolved to suspend the ongoing total, indefinite and comprehensive strike action,” he wrote.

At least four people have been killed in a mass shooting at a child’s birthday party in California.

Ten others were injured in the shooting at a restaurant on Saturday evening, in the state’s northern city of Stockton.

Local police say the victims include both adults and children. The conditions of the injured have not been confirmed.

A suspect is still on the loose and police say they believe the shooting may have been “targeted”.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened shortly before 18:00 local time (02:00 GMT on Sunday), and is appealing to anyone with “information, video footage, or who may have witnessed any part of the incident” to come forward.

Spokeswoman Heather Brent described the incident as “unfathomable”, adding: “This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and information remains limited.

“Early indications suggest this may be a targeted incident, and investigators are exploring all possibilities.”

Stockton’s Mayor Christina Fugazi called the shooting “unacceptable”.

“Families should be together instead of at the hospital, standing next to their loved one, praying that they survive.”

California has some of the strictest firearm laws in the US, and has in recent years faced challenges to it.

Osun State Police Command has dismissed a viral social media video alleging that bandits were preparing to launch an attack on Ilesa.

Mr. Ojelabi described the claim as false, misleading, and intended to create unnecessary fear among residents.

“The attention of the Police Command has been drawn to a viral AI-generated video circulating on social media, falsely claiming that bandits are advancing towards Ilesa, Osun State. This allegation is baseless, misleading, and deliberately designed to instil fear, cause panic, and disrupt public peace.”

He condemned the growing misuse of Artificial Intelligence apps to spread misinformation and warned the public against creating, sharing, or amplifying unverified content that could endanger the peace of the state.

The Joint Security Stakeholders for Oyo, Ogun, Lagos and Osun states have reassured residents of the South-West states and travellers that there would be adequate security and safety of lives and properties around their shared border areas and highways during and beyond the yuletide.

The committee gave this assurance while briefing newsmen after the fifth edition of annual security stakeholders’ meeting held at the McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

Special Adviser on Security to the Governor of Oyo State, CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd) and his Ogun State counterpart, AIG Olusola Subair (rtd), announced an expansion in the security stakeholders’ meeting to include Lagos and Osun states.

They explained that the meeting was necessary for the committee to review, appraise security architecture adopted last year; harmonise its activities and also restrategise to strengthen the security measures put in place in their shared corridors for residents and people coming from the Diaspora to enjoy the yuletide.

Speaking on the security architecture put in place by the governors of Oyo and Ogun states, the Vice-Chancellor, McPherson University, Professot Francis Igbasan, commended both states for prioritising security matters with the efforts of the joint technical security committee.

Professor Igbasan noted that the meeting would offer opportunity to harmonise operational strategies, deepen intelligence sharing, strengthen joint patrols and evolve common protocols that would make life unbearable for criminals around the two state borders.

The meeting had in attendance Security Chiefs from the four states, including the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Migration and Homeland Security, ACG Segun Adegoke (rtd); Special Adviser on Security to the Lagos State Governor, Dr Ayodele Ogunsan and his counterpart from Osun State, Barr Ojo Samuel, among others.

The Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Professor Tunji Olaopa, has admonished public servants not to see training opportunities as a jamboree, but as avenues to build capacity and improve their organisations’ productivity.

Professor Olaopa stated this while delivering a lecture at the 2025 Public Service Week, titled “Institutional Reforms for Inclusive and Responsive Public Service,” organised by the National Forum of Heads of Federal Government Establishments (NAFOHEADS), Oyo State Chapter, at the Federal Secretariat, Ikolaba, Ibadan.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Establishment and Training, Mr. Hameed Bello, Professor Olaopa noted that the public service would only become efficient when recipients of training programmes were held accountable by their organisations to demonstrate areas where their capacities have been enhanced.

Professor Olaopa also charged public servants not to depend solely on training sponsored by their organisations, but to pursue self-sponsored capacity development to remain relevant and justify the salaries they receive.

He further urged government at all levels to adequately fund the training of public servants, describing them as the catalysts that drive the wheel of every administration.

In his welcome address, the Chairman, NAFOHEADS, Oyo State Chapter, Dr. Stephen Adewuni, appreciated members for their support and appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to assist in the provision of a bus to convey workers to and from their various homes at subsidised rates.
