Ahead of the forthcoming election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oyo State Council, the Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal station, Mr Dominic Mokikan, has called on the chairmanship candidate on the platform of “Great Minds”,  Mr Akeem Abas, to uphold the truth and be magnanimous if elected.

Mr Mokikan stated this while receiving Mr Abas and his campaign team at the conference room of the Broadcasting House, Radio Nigeria, Dugbe, Ibadan.

The Zonal Director said the failure of past leaders of the union to see election in a simple way had led to conflict and selfishness.

“Be magnanimous in victory and be gracious in defeat. This is the way the union should be. If there is no gracious in defeat, it will lead to acrimony and if there is no magnanimity in victory it will lead to winners takes it all.”

In his reaction, Mr Abas said he is contesting for the position of Oyo NUJ chairman to rid the union of junks and restore professionalism.

He noted that members of his team were carefully selected, having examined their level of professionalism, character and the media organisations they work for.

Mr Abas had earlier at the Studio One of the Broadcasting House, pledged to prioritize the welfare of members through subsidized food items and training of members on Artificial intelligence, AI which he said was capable of rendering media professionals jobless in the future if not considered.

He maintained that the union would hold a joint press week annually with two days set aside for National Association of Women Journalist, NAWOJ, and Sports Writers Association, SWAN.

Commenting on the agenda of the team, the Campaign Director General of the Great Minds team, Mr Lekan Shobowale said his team would preserve the legacy of NUJ, end junk journalism, and also ensure the welfare of members.

The Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs Department, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Adewumi Faniran urged the chairmanship candidate to restore the lost standard that the journalism profession is known for.

“Let sanity prevail. If your team is fortunate to come on board, make sure you sanitise the union. The era of impersonation should be made a thing of the past.”

The Head of Department, Corporate Development and Communication, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Steven Agbaje said the Great Minds team possesses great manifestos, which he said would help the union to attain the desired standard position in the comity of unions in the state.

One of the candidates contesting for the secretary of the union, who is also a staff of FRCN, Ibadan Zonal station, Mr Dayo Adu pledged to contribute meaningfully towards achieving the mandate of the great mind team.

While commending the corporation for the opportunity he had leveraged to progress further in his journalism career, Mr Adu appealed for full support of staff members to enable his team win the forthcoming election.

The Oyo NUJ election comes up on December 9, 2025.

The Federal Government has condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a serious threat to democracy and regional stability.

The FG, in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Thursday, said it learnt of the development “with profound dismay and deep concern,” faulting the coup for leading to “an unconstitutional change of government in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.”

The government said it “condemns this act of military insurrection which undermines the democratic progress, constitutional order, and stability not only of Guinea-Bissau but of the entire West African sub-region.”

It added that the coup “represents a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of the Economic Community of West African States Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which explicitly rejects any ascension to power through unconstitutional means.”

Nigeria expressed solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau, insisting on the “immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order, the safety and security of all those detained and the full respect for the sanctity of democratic institutions in Guinea-Bissau.”

The statement also urged the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to ensure the protection of foreign observers still in the country.

“The Nigerian Government wishes to unequivocally call on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to ensure and guarantee the safety of all election observers still in the country on official assignment,” it added.

Calling for restraint, the government appealed to all parties involved to remain peaceful and defer to the country’s democratic processes.

It noted, “The Federal Government of Nigeria urges all actors involved to exercise utmost restraint, prioritise peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau as expressed through their ballots and the peaceful conclusion of the election with the announcement of results by the electoral management body.”

Nigeria warned that those responsible for the coup would face consequences, saying, “We warn that the perpetrators of this act will be held accountable for their actions, which threaten to plunge the nation into chaos and reverse the hard-won gains of its democracy.”

The government reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional and international partners to restore stability.

“Nigeria, as a key member of the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union, will work closely with our regional and international partners to take all necessary measures to ensure the swift return to normalcy and constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the promotion of democracy, peace, and stability across the African continent,” the statement added.

Also, the election observers from AU and ECOWAS on Wednesday condemned the military’s announcement of a coup d’état, describing it as a direct attempt to derail the country’s democratic process.

Authorities have begun investigating what sparked the disastrous blaze, including the presence of bamboo scaffolding and plastic mesh wrapped around the structures as part of construction work.

Hong Kong firefighters were scouring scorched high-rises Thursday for over 250 people listed as missing, a day after the financial hub’s worst blaze in decades killed at least 55 in an apartment complex.

Over 24 hours after fire broke out in the eight-building housing estate with 2,000 units, flames were still visible in some windows as crews sprayed water on the blackened exteriors.

Authorities have begun investigating what sparked the disastrous blaze, including the presence of bamboo scaffolding and plastic mesh wrapped around the structures as part of construction work.

Hong Kong’s anti-corruption body said it has launched a probe into renovation work at a housing complex, hours after police said they arrested three men on suspicion of negligently leaving foam packaging at the fire site.

The intense flames in four of the eight apartment blocks were finally extinguished and the fires in three others were under control, officials said Thursday afternoon. One building was not affected.

Multiple residents of Wang Fuk Court, located in Hong Kong’s northern district of Tai Po, told AFP that they did not hear any fire alarm and had to go door-to-door to alert neighbours to the danger.

“The fire spread so quickly. I saw one hose trying to save several buildings, and I felt it was far too slow,” said a man surnamed Suen.

“Ringing doorbells, knocking on doors, alerting the neighbours, telling them to leave — that’s what the situation was like,” added.

Crowds moved by the tragedy gathered near the complex to organise aid for displaced residents and firefighters, part of a spontaneous effort in a city that has some of the world’s most densely populated and tallest residential blocks.

“It’s truly touching. The spirit of Hong Kong people is that when one is in trouble, everyone lends support… It shows that Hong Kong people are full of love,” said Stone Ngai, 38, one of the organisers of an impromptu aid station.

But the toll continues to increase and fire service officials told reporters that 51 victims lost their lives at the scene, while four died in hospital.

Hong Kong authorities will immediately inspect all housing estates undergoing major works following the disaster, the city’s leader John Lee said.

A woman has died, and a man has been seriously injured after they were attacked by a shark while swimming at a remote beach in the Australian state of New South Wales.

Police said the woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, died at the scene, while the man, also believed to be in his 20s, was airlifted to a hospital in Newcastle in critical condition.

Paramedics had been called to Kylies Beach, in Crowdy Bay National Park about 300km north of Sydney, early on Thursday morning local time, police said.

Authorities praised a bystander who put a makeshift tourniquet on the man’s leg before the paramedics arrived, which “potentially saved his life”.

“The courage from some bystanders is amazing in this situation,” NSW Ambulance Superintendent Josh Smyth told reporters.

“To put yourself out there is heroic and obviously it did give us time to get to that male patient.”

The shark involved was likely a “large bull shark”, the Department of Primary Industries said.

Bull sharks, which can be found in both fresh water and salt water, are “one of the few sharks that are potentially dangerous to people”, the Australian Museum says. They are the third deadliest shark species, according to the International Shark Attack File.

The beach has now been closed and “smart” drumlines – which lure sharks with baited hooks so they can be tagged and re-released – were being deployed.

Surf Life Saving NSW said surrounding beaches would also be closed for 24 hours while drones surveilled the area.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our deepest condolences go to the families of the woman and man involved,” Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce said.

“For now, please remain clear of the water at beaches in the vicinity and follow the direction of lifeguards.”

This is the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. The most recent was less than three months ago, when a man was killed in a rare shark attack in Sydney’s northern beaches.

The US has suspended processing all immigration requests from Afghans, after an Afghan man was identified as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guard soldiers near the White House.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services said the decision was made pending a review of “security and vetting protocols”.

The suspect of Wednesday’s shooting, which left two National Guard members critically injured, is said to have arrived in the US from Afghanistan in September 2021.

US President Donald Trump said the attack was an “act of terror”, adding that he would take steps to remove foreigners “from any country who does not belong here”.

Tens of thousands of Afghans entered the US under special immigration protections following the chaotic US withdrawal from the country in 2021 under former President Joe Biden.

The Department of Homeland Security named the suspect in a press release as Rahmanullah Lakamal, “a criminal alien from Afghanistan”. An official has told the BBC’s US news partner CBS that he applied for asylum in 2024, and his application was granted earlier this year.

The 29-year-old is understood to have entered the country under the programme called Operation Allies Welcome.

Trump said following the shooting that the US “must now re-examine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden”.

The Joint Task Force DC, which is co-ordinating the National Guard deployments to the nation’s capital, said the attack took place at around 14:15 EST (17:15 GMT) on Wednesday near the Farragut Square Metro Station.

The soldiers had been on a high-visibility patrol near the corner of 17th and I streets – a busy lunch spot for office workers.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Jeff Carroll said the suspect “came around the corner” and “immediately started firing”, adding that the soldiers had been “ambushed”.

Other National Guard members nearby heard the gunfire and intervened, holding the suspect down until police arrived, he said.

The suspect was shot four times, law enforcement sources told CBS.

One witness described to the BBC his experience of hearing gunshots, as people ran in panic and tried to take shelter in a nearby shop.

Another witness, who was in his car close to the metro station, showed the BBC footage he took of the two soldiers lying on the street in their uniforms while being treated by medics.

A third person, apparently the alleged gunman, was also on the pavement being treated.

In the wake of the attack, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the president had asked him to send 500 more National Guard members to the American capital.

“This will only stiffen our resolve to ensure that we make Washington DC safe and beautiful,” the Pentagon chief said.

There are currently nearly 2,200 National Guard troops in the city.

They are a reservist force that can be activated to serve as military troops, but have limited power as they cannot enforce the law or make arrests.

The troops were deployed in August to tackle what Trump called “out of control” crime in Washington.

Overall crime in the city has fallen since the force was sent, which Trump credits to the troops’ presence on the streets.

There have been similar deployments in other Democratic-led cities across the US, which have faced legal challenges by opponents who accuse the Trump administration of overreach.

Trump imposed a travel ban on nationals of Afghanistan – and 11 other countries – earlier this year.

Afghan nationals holding Special Immigration Visas – available to those who worked directly with the US military and feared retribution from the Taliban as a result of that co-operation – were among a few exceptions to the sweeping bans.

The Taliban returned to power following the US withdrawal in 2021.

Trump has also ended a programme that granted deportation protections for thousands of people from Afghanistan.

The temporary protected status programme allowed migrants to get work permits if the US government deemed it unsafe for them to return to their home countries due to war.

The Ogun State Government has approved a comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Manual aimed at protecting patients and front line health workers while reducing the spread of infectious diseases across health facilities in the State.

At the validation meeting in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, said the manual represents a major step toward strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring that evidence-based practices become standard across public and private facilities.

Events in recent years, from the COVID-19 pandemic to recurring outbreaks of Lassa fever, Cholera, mpox, and other infectious diseases, have further reinforced the reality that robust IPC systems are not optional components of our health architecture. They are fundamental to the survival and effectiveness of the entire health sector.”

“That is why we have worked assiduously alongside our partners to develop this manual. It will serve as a uniform reference document for training, supportive supervision, and audits across public and private health facilities,” she said.

Dr Coker noted that the manual provides practical guidance on environmental hygiene, waste management, safe injection practices, standard precautions, and surveillance of healthcare-associated infections, and would also serve as a reference for training, supervision and quality assessments.

In a goodwill message, the Regional Technical Coordinator, African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), Dr. Patrick Nguku, commended Ogun State for prioritising safer healthcare environments, noting that the adoption of the manual demonstrated leadership and commitment to equipping health workers with clear, evidence-based instructions for infection control.

Representatives of other development partners, including the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Mr. Solape Folarin , representative of the World Health Organisation, Mrs. Adedayo Adenrele  and Pharmacist Michael Ohue of APIN Initiatives, pledged technical support towards ensuring that the manual achieves its intended objectives.

Ogun State House of Assembly has reiterated the need for promoting National values to serve as a catalyst for responsible citizenship and sustainable development.

The State lawmakers led by the Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, made the call during a seminar entitled “Roles of Legislature in Promoting National Core Values for National Development”, organised by the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Ogun State Directorate, in conjunction with the State House of Assembly.

Mr Elemide emphasized a return to national core values that reflect cultural upbringing, ethical responsibility and collective discipline.

On their part, a former Speaker, Mr. Olakunle Oluomo, and the Assembly Deputy Chief Whip, Mr. Babatunde Tella, called for the entrenchment of the nation’s core values right from the family, communities, sub-national, and national levels, maintaining that the nation should be committed to defending its sovereignty and protecting the people and national resources.

In his presentation, the resource person and former State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Sola Babalola, highlighted the urgency of a coordinated value reorientation campaign across the nation, emphasizing that four major social institutions should be refocused to reposition Nigeria’s value system.

Mr Babalola explained that the family, educational institutions, religious organisations, and the community must intensify efforts to strengthen national values and ethics, shaping societal behaviour.

In a remark, the State Director of NOA Mrs. Oyebisi Andu, said the essence of the programme was to explore how legislative institution could drive value re-orientation and take its cardinal role in a democracy.

Earlier, the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi, urged her co-lawmakers to take advantage of the Seminar to further contribute their quota to promoting the nation’s core values to aid national development.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has introduced a new policy mandating compulsory drug testing for all recruits and serving officers as part of efforts to strengthen accountability within the service.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, announced the directive at the closing session of the 2025 CGC Conference in Abuja, according to a statement by the service’s spokesperson, Mr Abdullahi Maiwada.

He said the measure aims to prevent individuals with substance-abuse issues from joining or remaining in the service.

“The Nigeria Customs Service has concluded arrangements to subject all incoming officers and men to a mandatory drug test as part of the ongoing recruitment exercise,” the statement said.

Adeniyi added that the tests would cover personnel across all zones, commands and the headquarters, stressing that the service would not tolerate situations where “sensitive decisions are made under the influence of drugs.”

He noted that recent incidents of erratic behaviour and questionable judgement in some commands were traced to substance abuse.

“There will be no compromise,” he said. “We will ensure every new officer is tested so we do not begin to spend Service resources rehabilitating personnel.”

The CG warned that lapses linked to drug use would no longer be excused, emphasising that officers performing critical enforcement duties must remain mentally and physically fit.

He also urged personnel to undergo regular medical checks.

The new directive comes amid growing scrutiny of security agencies over personnel conduct.

In recent years, agencies including the police, immigration and correctional services have introduced similar drug-testing regimes following cases of misconduct tied to substance abuse.

It also aligns with repeated calls by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Buba Marwa (rtd.), who has urged all security and uniformed agencies to institutionalise mandatory drug tests to strengthen the nation’s fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

The Federal Government has inaugurated the National Council on Livestock Development (NCLD), a high-level body created to drive sweeping reforms and unlock billions of dollars in new investments in Nigeria’s livestock Industry.

The Council held its inaugural meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, marking what officials describe as the country’s most ambitious livestock transformation in decades.

The Minister of Livestock Development, Mr Idi Mukhtar Maiha, said the government aims to grow the industry from its current $32 billion value to $74 billion in five years, anchored on the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy and the National Livestock Master Plan.

He said multinational and local companies are already in talks with the ministry for major investments across dairy, beef production, fodder cultivation, breeding, poultry, piggery and digital traceability systems.

Mr Maiha highlighted key accomplishments within the ministry’s first year, including the registration of eight new pasture species — the first in nearly 50 years — and the completion of a national strategy on animal genetic resources.

He added that the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) programme has delivered solar-powered vaccine rooms, boreholes, dips, milk collection centres and slaughter slabs.

Education

By Sola Rotimi (Ilorin)

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole, has urged Nigerians to set aside ethnic, religious, and political differences to confront the country’s escalating insecurity.

He made the appeal during a news conference marking the institution’s 50th anniversary.

Professor Egbewole noted that the milestone comes at a time when the nation is grappling with terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

He welcomed collaborations with global powers to tackle these threats but cautioned against any action that could undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty or violate international law.

The Vice Chancellor said the university intends to use its golden jubilee to chart a developmental course for the next fifty years, positioning itself as a hub of academic stability, innovation, and artificial-intelligence-driven learning.

He also revealed plans to establish vehicle assembly plants within the university, stressing that research must move beyond theory to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived in Kebbi State following the abduction of schoolgirls from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga.

During his visit, he is expected to meet with the Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, and address personnel of the Nigeria Police Force in the state.

Mr Egbetokun’s trip comes after a security briefing with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Sunday, where rising abduction cases in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states were discussed.

It will be recalled that bandits attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in the early hours of 17 November, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before abducting several students.

The gunmen reportedly operated unhindered, shooting Makuku as he tried to protect the students.

As the nation mourned the Kebbi tragedy, armed men carried out another large-scale abduction in Niger State last Friday at St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School, Papiri.

The gunmen, riding more than 60 motorcycles and accompanied by a van, shot and critically injured the school’s gatekeeper before abducting 315 students.

According to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), 50 of the students later escaped.

The CAN Chairman in Niger State and Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Reverend Bulus Yohanna, confirmed that the escaping students regained freedom between Friday and Saturday.

Health

By Oluseyi Olarinde

The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), led by the wife of the president, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched “Flow with Confidence”, a menstrual health programme targeted at schoolgirls in Oyo State.

The event, held in Ibadan, brought together girls from various schools across the city.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, described menstruation as natural and “a vital part of growing up for the girl child.”

She encouraged the students to embrace the acronym FLOWER—Freshen up, Learn about the cycle, Observe good pad use, Waste disposal, Eat healthily, and Reach out to parents if they experience challenges.

Dr Ajetunmobi urged the girls to “be confident and blossom like a flower during menstruation,” stressing that no one should be bullied or mocked because of their monthly cycle.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Mr Oluwasegun Olayiwola, noted that girls “flow with confidence” when basic amenities such as water and accessible toilets are available in schools.

He said such provisions help students stay focused on their studies without avoidable distractions.

Representing the wife of the governor, Chief Tamunominini Makinde, the Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, said no girl should miss school due to menstruation.

She announced that each beneficiary would receive 12 packs of sanitary pads to last a year.

Chief Makinde appealed for empathy from the public, especially when girls face cramps during their monthly flow.

She added: “It has often been said that ‘when you educate a girl, you educate a nation.’ This is not just a proverb; it is a proven developmental fact. Educated girls grow into empowered women who drive economic growth, strengthen families, uplift communities and contribute meaningfully to national development. Therefore, any investment in the well-being, education and confidence of the girl-child is an investment in Nigeria’s development and future stability.”

Chief Makinde also highlighted the need for support when girls experience menstrual discomfort: “Some girls experience menstrual cramps… which can sometimes make learning very difficult. Simple measures such as staying hydrated, using warm compressors, gentle stretching, proper rest, and, when necessary, taking mild pain relief prescribed by a health professional, can help them cope effectively. Teachers and parents must therefore continue to support them with understanding, patience and reassurance.”

In her remarks, the wife of the president, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, said the Flow with Confidence initiative aims to reach 370,000 girls nationwide, especially in rural communities.

Senator Tinubu explained that the programme has already been introduced in several states, with each receiving 10,000 packs of sanitary pads for vulnerable girls.

She added: “The Renewed Hope Initiative spent a total of N2,550,297,150 to procure these customised disposable sanitary pads from a local manufacturing company in Lagos State. I therefore urge corporate organisations, parastatals, agencies and well-meaning Nigerians to key into the Flow with Confidence programme, so that we can empower and reach as many girls as possible.”

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Senator Tinubu and the Oyo State governor’s wife, promising to use the pads responsibly.
