Five of the six sisters of the Al-Kadriyar family, who were kidnapped by bandits in the Bwari area of Abuja recently, have regained their freedom on Saturday night.

As of the time of filing this report, it could not be independently verified whether the girls were rescued by security operatives or were released after ransom was paid by their family.

However, an uncle to the girls, Kabiru Aminu, who disclosed the news of their release, posted a video on his X handle @kabiru_aminu, showing the sisters and their relatives jubilating.

“#Najeebahandhersisters are home right now, someone please wake me up!” he tweeted.

The six sisters were abducted recently alongside their father

The gunmen later released their father, asking him to go get N60m as ransom for the release of her daughters before Friday, January 12.

In a bid to raise money, Nigerians were urged to donate whatever they had into a bank account, but not enough money was gathered.

Unpleased by the development, the gunmen reportedly killed the eldest of the six sisters and dumped her body somewhere for her parents to bury.

Following the gruesome killing of Najeebah, the Nigeria Police Force said it was intensifying plans to rescue the victims while assuring Nigerians that plans were ongoing to prevent further kidnapping cases across the country.

President Bola Tinubu says the implementation of the student loan initiative will commence in January 2024.

Tinubu, who was speaking at Abuja during the National Economic Summit 2023  on Monday, assured Nigerian students that the era of incessant strikes will be a thing of the past.

“By January 2024, the new student loan must commence. To the future of our children and students, we are saying no more strikes,” he said.

In celebration of  June 12,  President Tinubu signed into law the student loan bill, a promise he made during his campaign.

The bill, sponsored by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, now Chief of Staff to the President, provides easy access to higher education for indigent Nigerians through interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

The funds for the programme will be domiciled in the Ministry of Education and will only be accessed by indigent students of tertiary institutions.

Monday’s move comes days after Tinubu waived the ‘no-work, no pay policy’ imposed by the previous administration on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The varsity lecturers had embarked on an eight-month strike to press home their demands including poor funding of schools.

At Monday’s event,  Tinubu also demanded improvements to the welfare of the legal system and civil service.

The president acknowledged the pain caused by the subsidy effect while pointing out that these reforms will eventually pay off.

“We have felt the pain of these reforms; soon we shall begin to reap the rewards,” he added.

“If you don’t change and plan the welfare of your judiciary and you ask them to be fair — render justice with passion with a hungry stomach. New and affordable homes will also be built at a record pace, I assure you.”

As part of efforts to address cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and other vices in the country, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs, has disclosed its readiness to introduce mobile courts.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, at a briefing in Abuja, on Monday, said, “If we have a mobile court, it will help as we go for our advocacy against SGBV. We have been advocating, and spending money, to no avail.

She disclosed this part of reforms and targets she hopes to realise in her first 100 days in office.

“When victims report, police will come in for arrest, we will take the victim straight to the hospital to confirm and then the mobile courts come in to ensure justice is served.”

She stressed the need for a different approach to interventions targeting grassroots women. She highlighted the importance of working with women cooperatives to implement empowerment projects that can be sustained by the recipients beyond the initial government support.

“The narrative has changed in this ministry. We have decided to forge ahead with more sustainable moves that will impact our women and children.

“Sanitary towels being given to girls in some schools from time to time is not sustainable; therefore, we have decided that instead of giving them the sanitary towels, we set up sanitary pad production ventures. Sharing gas cylinders to rural women is also not sustainable; the ministry is concerned about who refills the gas stove for the rural woman after the first refill. We have decided to, instead, give them charcoal burners and biogas stoves among others,” she noted.

In a meeting with students’ union representatives on the sidelines of the briefing, the minister reiterated government’s stand with Nigerian women, girls and boys, as well as her stand for justice on any case of sexual harassment in the country.

Federal Capital Territory FCT minister, Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate identification and arrest of the owner of a two-storey building which collapsed in Abuja on Wednesday night.

The building had at least 39 residents, with two certified dead, and 37 rescued and taken to various hospitals.

The building, located at Lagos Crescent, Garki Village in the Garki District of the nation’s capital, was one of the first storey buildings in the area.

While it caved it caved in around 11pm on Wednesday amid heavy downpour, rescue operations were initially very slow over the night as there was no immediate access to an excavator and rescue efforts were purely manual.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, Wike who noted that original residents of the area were designated for resettlement, however wondered why foe years, the FCT Administration could not carry out such resettlement.

While he applauded the rescue efforts, Wike said; “It is unfortunate that we woke this morning to the very disturbing news of this building collapse. It is not what we contemplated. Let me thank the agencies particularly NEMA and FEMA that have supported us to rescue not less than 37 lives. It is unfortunate that we lost two lives. I will appeal to the Permanent Secretary to make sure that funds are raised to pay the hospital bills of those who were rescued so that we do not lose any more person, and this should be done immediately.

“Secondly, these are the things we have been saying, nobody knows whose turn it will be, therefore when government says it will take actions in areas we believe there are illegal developments or buildings that do not comply with the standard codes, it is not as if anybody has any personal vendetta but for me it is for us to do the right thing.

“I don’t know why it has taken long that the FCTA has not resettled them and so we will take immediate action to see that the indigenes of these place are resettled and then government has to plan out this place.

“When government says take building plan, it is not to suffer anybody but to make sure that everyone is protected. Cities are planned to forestall this kind of occurrences. Imagine buildings without approval. I will ask that we must identify and arrest the owner of this property. It is very important.

“Government will, of course, take over this area and make sure no further development is carried out here. I want all the stakeholders here to please work with government in the interest of everybody. No one has come here to say I like A, I don’t like B. I know sometimes government’s decisions may not be too comfortable with the people, but in the long run, it is in the interest of the people. Now we are all gathered here and none of us is happy we are here. These are the things we are trying to forestall. Again I sympathize with those who lost dear lives, while government will pick up the bills of all those in the hospital. We will also support the rescue efforts and ensure that they get to the last level and rescue everyone still trapped in the rubble”.

On his part, Director General of FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, Dr Abbas Idriss said 37 persons were rescued at the scene of the collapsed structure.

He said the victims were evacuated to various medical facilities in Abuja.

“Thirty Seven persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped. Rescue team and others are on ground. Rescue operations on but slowly due to ongoing rain”. They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble”, he added.

The DG commended the efforts of all stakeholders working hard manually to rescue trapped persons, including members of the community.

It was gathered that the victims were taken to various hospitals including the National Hospital, Asokoro, Nyanya, and Garki District Hospitals, Alliance hospital and Zenith hospital.

Also speaking, Director, Department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, explained that the building had no planning approval because the area is meant for resettlement.

“The building is located within the Garki indigenous settlement. The building had two suspended floors, one used for commercial activities while the other floors were used as residential accommodation. The building caved in yesterday (Wednesday) and 37 persons were rescued

“The status of the place is that it is not a planned area so the development had no planning approval. In fact, the area is meant for resettlement from here to Apo resettlement town”

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT,  has announced the breakout of Diphtheria in parts of the city of Abuja.

The FCT Director, Public Health Department, Dr. Sadiq Abdulrahman, announced the outbreak, at a news conference on Monday, in Abuja.

Abdulrahman, while addressing the news conference, said the disease had already killed a four-year-old, adding that outbreaks earlier recorded in Lagos, Ondo, and Kano states in January, had triggered a national response by the Nigeria Centre for Disease and Control.

Diphtheria is an infection caused by strains of bacteria known as Corynebacterium Diphtheriae which produces toxins that cause difficulty in breathing, and heart rhythm problems, and could lead to death.

The Director said the outbreak was confirmed after tests on samples of suspected cases in a community near Dei-Dei, came back positive.

Two weeks ago, we got information from a community within the FCT of eight cases and that made our team to pick some samples.

“The samples were taken to the National Reference Laboratory, Gaduwa, and the NCDC, and one of the suspected cases came out positive,” he said.

He urged residents to report any strange symptoms, particularly respiratory challenges to relevant authorities and tasked them to maintain good personal hygiene.

Abdulrahman said the Department was collaborating with neighbouring States, to checkmate the spread of the disease through border surveillance.

Also, the Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Yahaya Vatsa, warned that unvaccinated people who lived in crowded and unhygienic environments were at high risk of contracting the disease.

He urged residents to ensure that their children were fully vaccinated, in line with the National Childhood Immunization Schedule.

To reduce the risk of contracting the disease, FCT residents are hereby advised to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated with three doses of the pentavalent vaccine. This is recommended in the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule,” he said.

Dr. Vatsa advised individuals with any of the signs and symptoms to isolate themselves and notify the FCT Disease Surveillance Notification Officer or the Emergency Operation Center, through the FCT Call Center toll-free lines.

Byb tomorrow afternoon, my predecessor is heading to Daura, on the border with Niger, but I have told him not to worry, he will still get a knock on his door. No matter how short a man is, he will see the sky. I will still be able to find him when I need his help.

The leadership of the Labour Party has distanced its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the allegation that he called for the postponement of the May 29 inauguration ceremony for the swearing-in of the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The rebuttal was issued in Abuja on Thursday by the party’s Acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.

Recall that the Lamidi Apapa-led faction of LP has disclosed that his camp was not among the party members calling for a shift in Tinubu’s swearing-in, pending the determination of the petitions before the Presidential Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja.

According to him, he has always been of the opinion that the inauguration “may not have any impact on the ongoing legal tussle on the presidential election involving our party, APC and INEC.”

Lamidi, who spoke through the faction’s image maker, Abayomi Arabambi, posited that the Electoral Act and the Constitution of Nigeria did not give room for a vacuum.

He said, “What Peter Obi is crying for is not supported by the law. A refusal to swear in Tinubu as President on May 29, will create a vacuum in the system, saying the law does not allow this.

“Even Peter Obi once benefitted from the system of being sworn into office despite pending petitions filed against him before the tribunal by Andy Uba. The law has to be complied with, which is to swear in Tinubu as president, and if anybody wants to change the narrative, they will have to change the law.

“So whether the president-elect is sworn in or not, there is right to remove him legally if it is found out that he was not duly elected.”

Reacting to his claim in a statement titled “Apapa’s statement on ‘swearing in’ reflecting ‘Hand of Esau, Voice of Jacob’’, Ifoh denied that his principal ever raised such an issue whether in a private or public conversation.

While alluding that the real enemies of the party are beginning to unfold, the LP acting spokesman noted that no amount of hatchet can distract Obi from reclaiming his mandate.

He said, “In all Peter Obi’s public and private statements, he has never said or by implication, insinuated that May 29 should be shifted. He is a Democrat and he is one person that believes so much in the judiciary as the last arbiter, and that is why he has resorted to the court to seek justice.

“I had refused to join issues with the expelled former acting National Publicity Secretary of Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi and the suspended Deputy National Chairman, Lamidi Apapa on their mischievous narratives of the ‘May 29 handover’ to INEC’s declared winner of the presidential election. The Labour Party actually does not want to comment on the matter which hearing has since commenced at the presidential appeal tribunal.

“However, the text of the statement which was read as a commercial on about three television stations in prime time hours suggests that the real sponsors of the crisis in the Labour Party would stop at nothing in ensuring that they sustain the imbroglio.

“A few weeks ago, you will recall how we alerted Nigerians to plots by this faction to withdraw the cases filed by some of our candidates in the tribunals, allegations they are yet to exonerate themselves. Part of their plots to scuttle the ongoing presidential tribunal as shamelessly boasted by Arabambi is to desecrate the sanctity of the tribunal venue on the next adjourned date with Lamidi Alaba forcing himself to appear as a representative of the Labour Party. Nigerians already know that you are sponsored to work against the presidential ambition of Peter Obi. No one is in doubt about Apapa camp’s altruistic ambition to remain a destructive agent in the Labour Party.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday arrested no fewer than 87 forex dealers in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Lagos and Kano.

Findings revealed that the EFCC detectives stormed several forex trading hubs in Abuja, ransacking their vaults for stash of dollars and naira.

The operatives later arrested no fewer than 25 legal and illegal forex dealers in addition to the 40 arrested on Tuesday during a raid of the Zone 4 Wuse offices of the Association of Bureau de Change Operators, bringing the number of arrests in the Federal Capital Territory to 65.

During the operation, the EFCC personnel were said to have seized the phones of those that were arrested.

The anti-graft agency also nabbed about 14 forex dealers in Lagos on Wednesday while eight others were picked up at the famous Bureau de Change market located at Wapa in Kano metropolis.

The development came barely 24 hours after operatives of the anti-graft commission arrested the Kogi State House of Assembly candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ismaila Atumeyi, with N326m and $140,500 cash.

Atumeyi, who is seeking to represent Ankpa Constituency 11 in the Kogi State House of Assembly, was arrested on Sunday, October 30, 2022 alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fraudster in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

In Lagos, EFCC detectives swooped on forex dealers on Broad Street in Lagos Island as well as some Bureau de Change outlets in other parts of the states.

Forex traders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the EFCC operatives came in two buses. It was learnt that about 14 Bureau de Change operators were arrested in Lagos.

Though no reason had been given for the raids, the EFCC operation, it was gathered, was targeted at tracking illicit funds from terrorists, bandits and politicians who might want to convert their stash in a desperate move to beat the redesign of the naira announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

But speaking on the Abuja raid, the Assistant Provost, Association of Bureau de Change Operators, Zone 4, Wuse, Mallam Muhammed Nera, disclosed that 13 out of the 25 persons arrested on Wednesday had been released to the association, noting that their phones were, however, still in the EFCC’s custody.

The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren did not respond to the allegations when contacted on Wednesday.
