A former Commissioner for Health in Oyo state, Dr Azeez Adeduntan has declared his ambition to run for Governorship position under the platform of All Progressives Congress,  APC.

Dr Adeduntan, an international cardio- vascular surgeon, who stated this at a news conference in Ibadan, said his intention to become the governor of the state was to leave an indelible impacts on the lives of the people.

He said becoming a governor would give him the opportunity to pay back as he had benefitted a lot from the society.

“Major reason why Dr Adeduntan has always been eager to become the Governor of Oyo State is to give back to the state and Nigeria. Nigeria trained me, America did not train me; America only improved on my skills. This is my nation.”

“I have decided, like the great American President,  John F. Kennedy not to continue to wait for what my state can do for me, but to challenge myself on what I can do for my state. When I look back at my experience in public sector,  I realise that God has prepared me for this moment. “

The Governorship Hopeful said his antecedent across the fields of health and other areas both locally and internationally was enough and would speak volume of his administrative prowess and ability to govern well.

“It was during my time as honourable commissioner for health that we began the much publicized National Health Insurance Scheme which helped in reducing death among pregnant women in the State. Also, equipping, fencing and painting of Adeoyo Hospital and other health care institutions, closure of substandard hospitals and health centres in the state, construction of Oyo State Infectious Disease Centre, which was later converted to isolation centre by the current government, endowment funds to repair our dilapidated and one billion Naira worth of equipment were brought to Oyo State hospitals from USA at no expense to Oyo State Government”

Dr. Adeduntan also reeled out his seven point agenda to include: security of lives and property, enhanced healthcare delivery, improved education, youth employment, infrastructure development, special welfare packages and agriculture.

While decrying the state of insecurity in the state, Dr. Adeduntan said if elected he would immediately embark on full restoration of the lost glory of the state.

“I promise the people of Oyo State to restore effective security of life and property that is daily becoming a cause of serious concerns to residents of Oyo State. I present myself as a capable, competent and tested hand to make Oyo State greater.

He urged members of Oyo APC to vote en-mass for him on Friday, 20th May at the party’s governorship primary in the spirit of peace, order and development for the state.

The National Leader of All Progressives Congress and presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, has explained why he met with members of the Progressives Governors Forum on Monday.

Earlier Tinubu had met with the APC governors at the Kebbi State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, hours after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo declared his intention to succeed the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in 2023.

But briefing newsmen after the meeting, the former Lagos State Governor noted that he met with the governors to seek their support for his ambition to become Nigeria’s president.

When asked about Osinbajo’s declaration and 2023 ambition, Tinubu said, “I don’t have any son grown up enough to make such declaration.”

He added, “The fact that we have people in our party that express desire to lead the party into the highest office in the electoral contest shows how much this our party has resonated with Nigerians and our party members.”

He acknowledged the role of the governors in the last convention of the party by helping in the evolution of the leadership that is acceptable and widely acknowledged by all party members.”

After at least four times of postponing its national convention since 2020, the ruling All Progressives Congress APC is now set to conduct the all-important exercise today.

The party which has had to contend with a series of bickering in the lead-up to the convention said on Friday that it would go into the Convention with a “Unity List”, outlining its consensus options for every elective office.

At a news briefing in Abuja, Chairman, Convention Sub-committee on Media and Publicity and Nasarawa state Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule also added that in line with the Electoral Act 2022, political appointees will not be allowed to vote as delegates except where such appointees are “statutory delegates” by virtue of the elective positions they might have held in the past.

He said; “Before you go into the convention, our first choice is always consensus and we are still on that first choice. However, democracy demands, even our party constitution demands and the constitution of Nigeria demands that if that doesn’t work, we will go ahead and look at the other options. But right now, that remains our option number one.

“On the issue of political appointees, our delegates are actually statutory delegates. So if you have a former president as a political appointee, if you have a former senator as a political appointee, these are already automatic delegates, you know, so let us not confuse the two just because being an appointee doesn’t necessarily take you out of being a delegate, because our delegates are classified, clearly. The former president on our party platform, former elected this, elected that, party officials and the rest of that. I don’t think anybody who holds any political party office is actually right now a political appointee of the President, or the governors and the rest of that.

“So, most of the list that we submitted, you know, if you are talking of the ones we have submitted now, we don’t have commissioners, we don’t have advisers, we don’t have all those unless if somebody particularly was a former this or former that, in that case, you know, just being an appointee doesn’t completely exclude such a person, you know, from being a delegate.

Unity List

“The issue of unity list will be ready today(Friday). It will actually be submitted and somebody was asking whether it is for real we are going to have a unity list or not, of course, yes, if you are talking of consensus, you must have a unity list, because that is the whole essence of consensus. You know, if you are having consensus, you are going to have people who have agreed, aspirants who have agreed, stakeholders who have agreed, and also the constituency that has agreed, and in that case, the name automatically will be adopted. And that is just the meaning of the unity list. That is how the unity list is going to be put together.

“On the arrangement for the consensus. I think anybody who has been following up with the activities of Mr. President and the party will understand that so many things have been going on towards consensus. Mr President has met with the governors, met with the aspirants for the chairmanship, met with the National Assembly is meeting also with all the major stakeholders of this party and the rest of that. If you look at that, that is actually an arrangement towards a consensus.

“One thing I can tell you clearly, the leadership of this party, the stakeholders of this party, the governors are united”, Gov. Sule added.

Party holds Policy Confab

Meanwhile, the Convention Sub-committee on Legacy and Rapporteur has held a pre-convention Policy Conference.

At the event, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, revealed that embarking on massive infrastructure projects by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration despite meagre resources at its disposal has set the APC apart from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP.

“When we came in, N18 billion was our budget for the Ministry of Works for all Nigeria’s roads. That was less than the budget of my state in 2015. This tells you the attitude of the preceding government towards infrastructure. So, if you budget N18 billion for roads and a new government that has less, is budgeting N500 billion for the same roads, are those two parties the same?” Fashola asked.

Also speaking, Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum NGF and Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi who co-chairs the subcommittee revealed how the PDP administration in his State reversed the wheel of progress achieved by his administration’s first term in office.

“That is why I said to you that there is a huge difference between the PDP and APC. That is why I hate to hear that all parties are the same. I can tell you with our own experience in Ekiti and you may also see that in other states where we are in control”, he stated.

In his remarks, Chairman of the sub-committee and Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, affirmed that security in the Northeast has greatly improved compared to what was obtained before.

The party was also making last-minute efforts on Friday to put finishing touches to the Eagle Square venue of the Convention. The lighting system, stages and decorations were being put in place as of 5 pm on Friday.

Party moves to placate disappointed aspirants

Following the emergence of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as consensus national chairmanship candidate, Saturday Vanguard gathered that some of the six aspirants side-stepped were deeply disappointed as they had been campaigning for the slot in the last six months

Indeed, one of them who has been a close loyalist of President Buhari from the All Peoples Party, APP through All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, to the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, days was ‘’crestfallen and emotionally distraught” a party source told  Saturday Vanguard.

To clear the emotional fog among the disappointed members, President Muhammadu Buhari had in the last  48 hours held a series of meetings with critical stakeholders of the party — National Assembly Caucus, governors, leaders of the defunct legacy parties that morphed into APC as well as the seven national chairmanship aspirants.

In addition, the party hierarchy has embarked on a number of measures to douse tension and ensure that no fewer than 5000 delegates expected to approach today’s convention with a united front.

One of the measures is returning nomination fees to aspirants, who agree to go with the consensus arrangement. However, to ensure that the constitutional rights of members were not breached, there will be an election, if any aspirant insists on running.

To drive the consensus option, the Presidential Spokesman and a member of the Media sub-committee of the convention planning committee, Mallam Garba Shehu said national officers have been ceded to states that are yet to produce national officers and each zone is meeting to hammer out and project consensus candidates.

Mallam Shehu disclosed that some of the zones have concluded the assignment and have produced their consensus lists while some are still in the process of doing so, assuring that the list would be ready before today’s convention.

“The president is expecting a result today (yesterday) on the unity list. Reconciliations are ongoing. We are not willing to let anyone go. Our tent is big enough to accommodate everyone,” he said.

“To be in charge of a very sophisticated political party like APC is a heavy responsibility; I assure our teeming members, it is a responsibility we will not take very lightly. “To whom much is given, much is expected. Therefore, I pledge to run an open and transparent administration where all party members will be carried along. Also, our administration will instil discipline, respect for rule of law and constituted authorities within and outside the party.

“Apart from genuine reconciliation and harmonisation, our administration has also embarked on an aggressive membership drive. Let me reiterate that APC is a party built on the principles of democracy and human development; the party provides equal opportunity for every party member and any Nigerian that is willing to join the party.”

“To the state and local party executives being inaugurated today, I charge you to work in line with the party’s constitution and also ensure you carry all party members along without discrimination or nepotism. You are also expected to work hard to settle all disputes and differences in the party living no aggrieved party member behind.”

“I am assuring our party leaders, aspirants and their supporters that the era of impunity and imposition of candidates is over. Our administration shall create a level-playing field for members jostling for one position or the other in the 2023 elections. We’re returning the party to the members; they will determine the faiths of all aspirants. No leader or group will be allowed to impose candidates on the party.”

– Claim sitting Senator, ex-Governor behind the manipulated list.

The group made the call in Ibadan at a news conference on their positions regarding Saturday’s congress of the party.

The leader of the group, Senator Ayo Adeseun said the delegates’ list for the planned congress has been totally manipulated.

He explained that for the congress to hold, the national body of the party must produce the authentic delegates’ list for the exercise.

Senator Adeseun claimed a sitting senator and former Governor of Oyo State were behind the doctored list claiming the national leadership of the APC must ensure that the consensus list which is still in possession of the current leadership of APC in the state is considered for the election.

The party chieftains at the news conference include Minister for Youths and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare, Governorship candidate of the party in 2019, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Professor Adeolu Akande and Barrister Sarafadeen Aĺi.

Others are Mogaji Joseph Tegbe, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, Hon. Tolu Sadipe and Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle.

Meanwhile, scores of the party’s chieftains are still at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Oke-Ado, the venue of the planned State Congress.

The main bowl of the stadium is under lock while party members were restricted to open field in the place.

The party loyalists in different attires were seen singing various solidarity songs in support of their aspirants.

The Ward Congress of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, held peacefully across the 30 local government areas of Osun State.

Party members have trooped out in large numbers as early as seven o’clock in the morning to participate in the exercise.

The electoral materials also arrived the affected polling locations early enough accompanied by officials selected by the national headquarters of the party.

However, the party members did not agree on the particular modus operandi of conducting the congress.

In majority of councils including Boripe, Osogbo, Ila, Olaoluwa, Iwo, Ayedaade, Isokan and Irewole, members agreed on consensus as recommended by the national leadership, while in few other areas including some parts of Ejigbo, Ilesa East and West, party faithful insisted on contest to enable every eligible member vote.

This division is obviously between a faction of the party loyal to the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who parade themselves under the tag, The Osun Progressives, TOP, and the Ileri Oluwa group consisting those loyal to the incumbent governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola.

Speaking in his country home in Iragbiji, Governor Gboyega Oyetola described the exercise as the first time party members would agree on choice of ward officials without any rancour.

Governor Oyetola commended members of the party for their peaceful conduct during the exercise.

Similarly, the Chairman of the National Congress Committee in Osun State, Mr. Gbenga Elegbeleye commended party members for their conduct at ensuring that the process went peacefully.

Mr. Elegbeleye said there was no parallel congress anywhere in Osun state.

The Supreme Court has upheld the re-election of Rotimi Akeredolu as Governor of Ondo State.

Akeredolu’s victory was affirmed after four of the seven justices of the Supreme Court that heard the case upheld his candidacy in the October 10, 2020 election in the state.

Three other justices disagreed with the majority judgment, insisting that Akeredolu’s candidacy in that election was a nullity.

The minority judgment held the view that the appeal has merit and ought not to be struck out by the Appeal Court.

Akeredolu was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in October 10, 2020, Governorship election in Ondo State.

The PDP and its candidate, Eyitayo Jegede had earlier approached the Appeal Court to challenge the candidacy of Akeredolu, insisting that his nomination form was signed by a sitting Governor Mai Buni who doubles as the Acting National Chairman of the party.

The appeal was based on the constitutional provision which forbids sitting Governors from holding executive positions outside their statutory position as governors.

They prayed the court to nullify Akeredolu’s candidacy, but the Appeal Court struck out the appeal, for lack of merit.
