The Kano Emirate Council on Wednesday declared that it would not observe the annual Durbah ceremony during this year’s Eid-el-Fitr, coming up this weekend.

This would be the first time the Sallah Durbah would be cancelled in its over 700-year history.

The Emirate council said the Durban was cancelled due to the health condition of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who is the custodian of the tradition of the people of the state.

However, a source close to the Emirate disclosed that the suspension of the Durban activities was mainly because of the prevailing security situation in the state.

Kano state, the commercial city in northern Nigeria, has recorded several attacks in the raging insurgency by the fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram.

A senior councillor in the Emirate, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, on Wednesday while briefing journalists in Kano stated that “the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, has directed me to inform all district heads and all other traditional rulers that traditional Sallah activities have been cancelled and everybody should stay indoor to celebrate the Sallah.’’

The Emir will only attend the Eid prayer on Sallah day,” he said.

Sanusi, who also holds the traditional title of Wamban Kano, added that “all other celebrations during Sallah, from Sallah homage, visit to the state governor and the traditional Hawan Nassarawa where he interfaces with his subjects, were cancelled given the health condition of the Emir

Sanusi urged the people to pray for the improved health of the royal father and for continuous peace in the state and the country.

The police have said it will obey a court order restraining the Kano State government from repealing Kano Emirate Council Law 2019, which has seen the dethronement of all the five emirs in the state and opened the door for the return of Lamido Sanusi as the emir in the state.

Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Mr Sanusi on Friday, a day after the state House of Assembly passed a bill that scrapped the four emirates created under the 2019 law.

This was in defiance of an order of the Federal High Court in Kano, which, on Thursday restrained the authorities from implementing the new emirate law.

In the order issued by Justice AM Liman in suit number FHC/KN/CS/182/2024, the court asked the state government and the other parties involved to stop the implementation of the law, pending the hearing of the substantive case.

A title holder in Kano emirate, Aminu Dan’agundi, filed the suit to challenge the government’s decision in the matter.

But Governor Yusuf, after handing Mr Sanusi his letter of reinstatement, vowed to report Justice Liman for issuing the order while not being in the country.

However, the state commissioner of police, Muhammad Gumel, at a press conference attended by the head of security agencies in Kano, said the agencies will implement the court order.

He asked all parties involved to obey the court order. He said the security agencies in the state will ensure peace and order and arrest anyone who causes a breach.

A deployment of soldiers has arrived at the mini-palace of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero following his dethronement by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf on Thursday, DailyTrust reports.

Yusuf, while signing the repealed Kano Emirates Council Law, gave the deposed Emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand them over.According to Daily Trust, the other Emirs—Alhaji Nasir Ado Bayero (Bichi), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa (Rano), Alhaji Ibrahim Abubakar II (Karaye), and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir (Gaya)—complied with the directive.

However, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero returned to Kano on Saturday. His aircraft landed at the Aminu Kano International Airport at 4:30 am, where he was immediately greeted by supporters chanting a verse from Surah Al-Fatihah in the Holy Quran. They chanted, “You (alone) we worship, and you (alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).”While some others were saying, “God the Almighty will kill your enemies.”He later observed Subhi (dawn prayer) at the airport before proceeding to the mini-palace in Nassarawa.

It was observed that a team of soldiers moved into his palace at Nasarawa, where the 15th Emir is located, following the governor’s order.

Although security operatives accompanied Ado Bayero from the airport to the mini-palace, the reason for the additional troop deployment remains unclear.

The Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, accused the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, of facilitating the return of the dethroned Emir.

Gwarzo made the accusation in a short video interview at the Emir’s palace in Gidan Rumfa on Saturday. He alleged that the NSA released two jets to bring Ado Bayero to KanoHe said, “The National Security Adviser gave two jets to bring the dethroned emir to Kano and to bring him to the place. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says beyond its proud history and traditions, Kano is a melting pot of diverse tribes and cultures and a place that is home to all and for all Nigerians, where they can co-exist peacefully regardless of differences.

Professor Osinbajo stated this today in Kano, during the coronation of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano, where he represented President Muhammadu Buhari.

The event which drew dignitaries from far and wide featured, besides the administration of the oath, and the formal presentation of the Staff of Office to the Emir, traditional rites, prayers, recitals and speeches.

The Vice President, who conveyed the president’s warm felicitations and personal good wishes to the state government and people of Kano, described the coronation as ‘historic’, while noting that Kano is revered as a major commercial and economic centre in sub-Saharan Africa.

“It is only the tolerance of the culture of Kano, where opposite ideas can co-exist peacefully, that you could have a thriving free market economy, with several millionaires and yet also be the base of radical left of centre political ideas. This is after-all the city of the socialist man of the masses, Mallam Aminu Kano and many of his disciples. Kano is also the home of the richest man in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote,” he said.

He added that, “we are all proud of this city; proud of its legacy of tolerance and warmth and very proud that it indeed remains home to all and for all Nigerians, regardless of tribe and ethnicity, and the melting pot of diverse tribes and cultures assimilated into a robust, vibrant and cohesive whole.”

Congratulating the Emir of Kano on his coronation, the VP said, “Your Royal Highness, it is this great city over which God has given you the good fortune of being Monarch, a privilege which you know comes with the obligation of preserving these rich traditions of brotherhood of all tribes and tongues.”

“You inherit not only one of the most revered thrones in Africa, but on a more personal level your great father was known for his wisdom, courage and integrity. He loved his people and served them with honor and complete commitment. You have a goodly heritage but a particularly difficult act to follow. But we are confident that by the grace of God you will exceed the reputation of your illustrious forebears”.

“So today, as you ascend the throne of your fathers, carrying with you the love and trust of your people. I can only offer you a prayer: I pray that this land will prosper in your reign, I pray that the Almighty God will be merciful to you and to the people of this land, and that his hand will be upon you to guide and direct you daily. Your family and tribe will increase, change of guards that only a few will experience in their lifetimes.

Aminu Ado Bayero one of the Sons of late Emir Ado Bayero has been crowned the 15th Emir of Kano. The new emir and Sanusi contested for emirship in 2014.

The announcement was made by the secretary to the state government a few hours after the removal of Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Until his appointment as emir of Kano, Bayero was the Emir of Bichi, one of the four newly created emirates.

The appointment of the new emir takes immediate effect according to the SSG.

The Kano state government on Monday dethroned the Emir over what it described as disrespect to instructions from Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State and other lawful authorities.

Emir of Kano on 8 June 2014

The deposed emir, Sanusi was selected to succeed his granduncle, Ado Bayero, as the Emir of Kano on 8 June 2014.

Many expected Bayero’s son (Who is now the new emir) to succeed him and protested Sanusi’s appointment.

During his reign, Sanusi spoke out on government policies, breaking with royal tradition and also criticised Kano government of misplaced priorities.

He has called for an end to child marriage, building more schools instead of mosques, and infrastructural development.

Sanusi called for population planning and has said that polygamy was increasing poverty in the region.

Sanusi has also advocated for eugenics to solve the Almajiri issue.

Heavily armed security personnel from the State Security Service, Police, Civil Defence and Army took over the palace shortly after the announcement.

Security was also beefed up at the Kano State House of assembly and the government house.
