As the world celebrates Wildlife Day, a professor of Agricultural Economics and Extension at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, Raphael Omolehin has called for more efforts to protect varieties of animals and plants from extinction.

In an interview with Radio Nigeria in Ado-Ekiti, Professor Omolehin noted that continuous destruction of the wildlife, which comprises animals, plants and water bodies, would lead to the inability of the coming generation to identify them.

He emphasized the economic importance of wildlife species including birds, insects and earthworms as pollinators that help crops to yield bountifully.

Professor Omolehin noted that the wildlife also help to prevent pollution by filtering the air and releasing oxygen for human beings to breathe in.

The university lecturer emphasized that wildlife serves as a source of tourism, education, as well as employment for tour guides and veterinarians.

He stressed further that people in the developed countries often go for picnics in the wild, which help them to be closer to nature, look fresher and calm, but such could not happen in Nigeria due to insecurity.

The don pointed out that in developed countries, squirrels could be seen roaming the streets without being killed, unlike Nigeria where people hunt them for food.

It would be recalled that the United Nations General Assembly had in 2013 proclaimed March 3 of every year as World Wildlife Day to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and protection of wildlife as well as their habitats, and the theme for this year is, “Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet”.

As the world commemorates the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, Nigerians have been enjoined to desist from acts that will pollute the air.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, Professor Olubunmi Shittu made the appeal in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Ado-Ekiti to mark the day.

Professor Shittu identified air pollutants to include vehicle emissions, black carbon and methane which often lead to the death of human beings as well as negatively affect crops.

He noted that polluted air could cause airborne diseases, lung diseases and affect the digestive system, hence the need to promote clean air at home and outdoors.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor called for the usage of public transport to reduce vehicular emission as practised in advanced countries, as well as limit the usage of air conditioners by embracing fresh ventilation.

On November Twenty-Six, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly adopted September Seven as the “International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies”, because about ninety-nine per cent of the world’s population breathe polluted air, resulting in seven million death annually.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is “The Air We Share”.

The management of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State has warned prospective students and candidates seeking admission into the institution against antics of fraudsters, asking them to pay a certain amount of money into the registrar’s account for a slot in the ongoing admission exercise.

It said a directive that had gone viral on social media compelling the students to pay 15, 000 naira for admission slots did not originate from the institution, describing it as the handiwork of fraudsters.

The fraudsters in a forged letterhead paper with FUOYE’s logo had asked prospective students and admission seekers to fill out a form with their names, preferred course, alternative course, JAMB Registration Number, State of Origin, LGA, JAMB Score and N15,000 registration fee for approval into the registrar’s account.

Particularly, the fraudsters said, “kindly fill this admission slot form and submit it to the registrar with fifteen thousand naira (N15, 000) registration fee for approval.”

But in a statement by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Foluso Ogunmodede, FUOYE said the purported information making the round did not emanate from the university.

It, however, asked the public to disregard it as the admission into the university was not a cash-and-carry issue but strictly on merit and excellence.

The release reads: “The attention of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State has been drawn to admission form which has gone viral on social media, asking prospective students and admission seekers to pay N15,000 into the registrar’s account as registration fee for approval.

“This is the handiwork of fraudsters as the University which placed premium on excellence and merit will not require students or admission seekers to pay N15, 000 into any unauthorized account.

“We disassociate ourselves from these fraudulent and the purported admission fraud while warning admission seekers to disregard this as emanating from the university.

“The university did not authorize the viral admission fraud and we have no intention to charge admission seekers for any admission form” with a view to paying money into a private account.”
