A man, simply identified as Collins, has been arrested following the alleged murder of his female partner, a 300-level undergraduate at the University of Port Harcourt.

The tragic incident occurred along NTA Road, Mgbuoba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The deceased, Justina Otuene Nkang, a Biological Chemistry student, was reported missing four days ago.

She was said to be undergoing her Industrial Training attachment at a popular private hospital located in the D/Line axis of Port Harcourt, where she was last seen.

A source close to the victim said Justina’s decomposing and mutilated remains were seen in her boyfriend’s apartment, whom she had visited after the close of work at the hospital four days ago.

According to the source, the deceased was murdered by her lover for ritual purposes, as her breast, eyes and other sensitive parts of her body were mutilated.

The source stated, “So he (the suspect) after committing the crime kept her body in his apartment for three days and just when he wanted to dispose of her corpse in a refuse dump, a vigilante group in the area accosted him, leading to his arrest.”

Meanwhile, a viral online post seen by our correspondent on Thursday morning read, “Otuene Justina Nkang was reported to be missing four days ago.

“She was a 300-level student of Biological Chemistry in UNIPORT, but unfortunately, she was killed by her boyfriend who tried disposing of her body this evening but was caught. The suspect has been handed over to the police.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, told our correspondent that the Commissioner of Police, Emeka Nwaonyi, will be addressing the press on the matter later on Thursday.

She stated, “The CP will be having a press briefing by 11 a.m. today; you will get details of the incident when you come.”

Former Ondo State governor, Retired General Ekundayo Opaleye wants recipients of chieftaincy titles to regard the honour as a platform for more service to humanity.

Retired General Opaleye gave the advice in Abeokuta, at a reception in honour of a former Senior Special Assistant to Ogun State governor on Media, Chief Funmi Wakama and her husband, Chief Ene on their installation as the Yeye Fiwagboye and Fiwagboye of Owu Kingdom.

The former Ondo State governor, who was the chairman at the event held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, advised Mrs Funmi Wakama, who was also retiring from the service of the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA and her husband to continue to promote harmonious relationship among the people around them.

Also, former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, while addressing the gathering, applauded Chief Ene Wakama for supporting his wife to reach the top of her career in the tasking field of journalism, describing the former General Manager of NTA Abeokuta as a courageous personality and a goal getter. 

The Olowu of Owu, Egbaland, Oba Saka Matemilola had earlier at the Oke Ago Owu Palace installed Chief Funmi Wakama and her husband Chief Ene Wakama as the Yeye Fiwagboye and Fiwagboye of Owu Kingdom at an event  chaired by former Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and attended by dignitaries including Senator Tolu Odebiyi, the Executive Secretary Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, Dr Yemisi Bangbose and the General Manager, Radio Nigeria, Paramount FM, Abeokuta, Mr. Akinyinka Akintola.

Highlight of the reception was the unveiling of the Funmi Wakama Foundation and Media Outfit by the retiring NTA Director.

The draw for the second edition of SWAN Media football competition has been held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital.

The draw conducted at the SWAN Secretariat, MKO International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta had representatives of various media houses in attendance.

Super FM from Ijebu Ode will slug it out against the male football team from the Nigerian Television, Authority, NTA, Rock City FM will battle Oodua FM, FIBAN will battle SMASH FM while Family FM will tackle Paramount FM.

In other fixtures, the football team of Ogun State Television, OGTV, will battle their sister agency, Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, OGBC, for a quarter final ticket, Splash FM will take on Correspondents Chapel, Eagle FM Radio will test Federated for a size while the winner of the first edition of the competition, Consolidated chapel will confront State Information chapel.

The Chairman, Ogun State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde explained that the 5-aside football competition was to sustain the existing relationship among Journalists in Ogun state.

According to the SWAN Secretary, Mr Micheal Azeez-Ogunsiji, the competition will be held between 1st and June 8th and will take place at the Fun Turf, MKO International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

The Zonal Director, Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, Mrs Omolola Olorode says the station is ready to collaborate with Radio Nigeria Ibadan.

Mrs Olorode stated this when the Management of Radio Nigeria led by its Zonal Director, Mrs Bolatito Joseph paid a courtesy visit to the management of NTA

She explained that, moving broadcasting forward required synergy, pointing out that the two stations were in the position to achieve the goal.

Earlier ,the Zonal Director Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Ibadan, Mrs Bolatito Joseph had pointed out that NTA and Radio Nigeria had always had fruitful a relationship.

Mrs Joseph added that sustaining the partnership between the two stations would benefit Oyo State.

Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun has admonished a chairperson aspirant of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, in Oyo State, Mrs. Omolola Alamu and her team to remain focused on uplifting the association if elected.

Dr. Olatunbosun gave the admonition when the campaign train tagged, “The New Dawn Team” paid him a courtesy call at his office, Secretariat, Ibadan, after the team had visited the Information Chapel of the ministry to canvass the votes of women journalists.

The commissioner while stressing the need for the team to priortise the welfare of members if elected, equally solicited the support of the association for the present administration in the task of moving the state forward.

Earlier, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Rotimi Babalola had urged the New Dawn Team led by Mrs Omolola Alamu of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship for the election and shun acts that could bring the name of NAWOJ into disrepute.

The chairperson aspirant, Mrs. Omolola Alamu while canvassing for votes of NAWOJ members, pledged her team’s readiness to run an all-inclusive executive.

The campaign team later proceeded to Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, Ibadan.

Addressing the team at NTA, an Assistant Director News, Mrs. Aduniade Alao asked the team not to derail from the mission that NAWOJ stood for, in uplifting the women and children.

On the New Dawn Team are Shade Oduola vying for the post of Vice-Chairperson, Alhaja Ramat Alade for the office of the Secretary, Kehinde Igbari as Assistant Secretary, Temilola Akarah, Treasurer, and Temitope Oyewole as secretary.

The newly constructed Security Post at the Egunya transmission office of Nigeria Television Authority Abeokuta by the Central Bank of Nigeria, Abeokuta Office has been inaugurated. 

The Director General, NTA, Mallam Yakubu Ibn Muhammed while inaugurating the security post underscored the needs for effective protection of personnel and equipment at Offices 

The Director General represented by the General Manager, NTA Abeokuta, Mrs Funmi Wakama appreciated the Central Bank of Nigeria, Abeokuta Office for rendering the support by constructing a befitting security post at the Station’s Egunya office 

Mallam Yakubu called on other Organizations and individuals to emulate the rare gesture of the CBN by assisting the station to perform its obligations optimally. 

Handling over the Security Post to the care of the management of NTA Abeokuta, the Branch Manager, CBN, Abeokuta Office, MR. Wahab Oseni hinted that the Apex Bank recognizeD the need for a security post at the Egunya office in securing both lives and property and decided to render the assistance. 

The event was attended by heads of security agencies in Ogun state and representatives of the traditional institution in Egbaland.

The Acting Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mrs Bolanle Owoyemi has called for synergy between Federal media establishment in Oyo State to enhance effective information dissemination to the public.

Mrs Owoyemi, who led other members of management of FRCN on a courtesy visit to the management of Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, noted that cooperation among media establishments including private ones would in no small measure facilitate unbiased news reportage.

The Acting Zonal Director, FRCN, who appreciated NTA for the cordial relationship which has existed between the sister stations, however, solicited further support for the newly established FRCN Ogo Ilu 89.3 F.M, Oko, Oyo State, for smooth operation

Responding, the Zonal Director, NTA, Mrs Omolola Olorode said the station would be ready to collaborate with FRCN not only in moving the new F.M station forward, but also in all other areas of cooperation between the two Federal agencies.

 In the entourage of the FRCN zonal director were the Deputy Director, News and Current Affairs, Elder Adenrele Ajisefini and the Deputy Director Progammes, Mrs Bolatito Joseph.

A late-night inferno has gutted and destroyed offices and the conference hall of Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, Ilorin, in Kwara State.

The incident occurred at exactly 11pm on Wednesday night.

A statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle said the timely arrival of men of the service prevented the fire from spreading to other places.

According to him out of the twenty-eight offices in the burnt building only three offices were affected and the conference hall.

Mr Adekunle said the cause of the fire was as a result of an electric spark in one of the affected offices. 

Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor, Mr. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq who was at the scene of the incident, has commiserated with the management of NTA over the inferno that gutted some sections of its Ilorin Area Office.

House of Representatives Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to provide requisite facilities that would make the Nigerian Television Authorities, NTA, ready for digital switch.

Chairman of the committee, Mr. Olusegun Odebunmi made the call when he led other members of the committee on inspection of facilities at the Ibadan Zonal Station of the NTA.

Mr. Odebunmi lamented obsolete equipment currently at the disposal of the NTA saying it was incumbent on the federal government to expedite action through urgent procurement of modern broadcast transmission facilities that would prepare the station for digital switch.

The House Committee Chairman who commended the staff of the Nigerian Television Authority for living up to expectations despite inadequate broadcast equipment said the federal government should not allow election period to form the bases of doing the needful to its media outfit.

In an interview, the Zonal Director, NTA, Ibadan National Station, Engineer Omolola Olorode expressed optimism that the visit of the committee would fast-track the total transformation of the station which she said was long overdue.

Facilities inspected by the committee included rehearsal studio, audiovisual studio library, master control room, transmitter, museum, and the station’s power-house.

The sixtieth anniversary of Western Nigeria Television, WNTV, the first television in Africa put together by Foundation for Ibadan Television Anniversary Celebration, FITAC, has commenced with photo exhibition held at Nigerian Television Authority, NTA Ibadan premises in Agodi, Ibadan.

The event had in attendance ace broadcasters and veterans in the media industry who worked as staffers of WNTV.

Speaking on the essence of the programme, Chairman Board of Trustee, FITAC, Ambassador Yemi Farombi said it was to celebrate sixty years of excellence and dedication, noting that WNTV was a national legacy which should be cherished forever.

Ambassador Farombi explained that WNTV which had metamorphosed to NTA preceded television broadcast in France, Ireland and South Africa among other countries.

In separate remarks, Zonal Director, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan National Station, Alhaji Mohammed Bello and his counterpart from Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Engineer Omolola Olorode encouraged practicing journalists to learn from the dexterity of the old hands who worked successfully with analog gadgets and maximize the potentials of digital broadcasting.

Engineer Makinde pledged to support alumni of WMTV/WNBS to ensure that history was not erased.
