The new executives of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ogun State chapter have been sworn in with a call on them to keep the flag of the association flying. 

Speaking at the inauguration of the new executives held at Iwe Iroyin, Oke Ilewo Abeokuta, the vice president of NAWOJ, B Zone, Mrs. Omobola Akingbein urged the new executives to be united and implement programmes that would enhance the welfare of the members.

In her inaugural speech, the new state chairperson of NAWOJ in Ogun State, Mrs. Sekinot Salam-Opebiyi who promised to operate an open-door policy with integrity, passion, and dedication, described the inauguration as the beginning of a new era in the association.  

While promising that the new executives would facilitate training both internationally and locally, the new chairperson said Ogun NAWOJ would periodically organize vocational training programmes for young graduates.

She also urged women journalists to uphold the ethics of journalism and remain uncompromised stakeholders in sustaining democracy.  

Other members of the executives are the Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adegoke of Radio Nigeria Paramount FM, Abeokuta, the Secretary, Mrs. Omobolaji Adekunle and Assistant Secretary, Mrs Adejoke Adeleye.

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Ogun State Chapter wants the relevant authorities to sanction a medical doctor for allegedly beating up a female nurse in the line of duty. 

Chairperson of the Association, Mrs Olufunmilayo Solarin who made the call in a statement in Abeokuta alleged that one Doctor Adeola Olowu assaulted a nurse on duty at the General Hospital, Ayetoro, in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state. 

Mrs Solarin claimed that the nurse, Adeyemi Rashidat, had reportedly called on Doctor Olowu to attend to an emergency around 4 am on Saturday 8th January 2021 but was assaulted by the doctor who descended on her with slaps and pushed her to the wall for daring to disturb him over a patient’s situation which she could have handled. 

The Ogun NANNM Chairperson maintained that the nurse had sustained an injury before being rescued by relatives of the patient and expressed her displeasure over the incident which she described as barbaric.

Mrs Solarin called on the relevant authorities to investigate the doctor’s irresponsible behaviour against public service rules and ensure justice for the nurse to prevent a recurrence of such aggression.

Judiciary

Ogun State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, has suspended the industrial action embarked upon over two months ago over cut in salary.

The Chairman of the Union, Comrade Tajudeen Edun, announced that there were series of meetings before the issue was finally resolved. 

He said the union had reached an agreement with the government and the union will resume work.

Comrade Edun said the state government had accepted the union’s demand and promised that members will partner the government in achieving greater heights.

The union chairman addressed the newsmen flanked by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi and the Head of Service, Alhaja Selimot Otun.

Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, says it is finalizing plans to enact a bill towards establishing the Ogun State Youth Development Commission.

The speaker, Mr. Olakunle Oluomo, made the disclosure while playing host to the leadership of Ogun State Chapter of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria, YAN, led by Mr. Olufemi Osinubi at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Mr. Oluomo explained that the proposed bill was part of the commitment of the Ninth Assembly at creating more avenues for engaging the youth across the three senatorial districts in adding value to governance and the administration of the present government in the state.

The speaker who stressed the need for a more robust legal framework for proper engagement, empowerment, and development for the teeming youth, noted that such bill would improve youth integration through necessary political actions and policy. 

Mr. Oluomo, who further challenged members of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria to step up measures at enlightening other segments of the society on the roles, duties and responsibilities of legislators, tasked them to take part in issue affecting nation building. 

Earlier, in his presentation, the leader of the group, Mr. Osinubi said the essence of their visit to the Assembly was to familiarize themselves with the practices of lawmaking, and he also acknowledged the lawmakers’ efforts in strengthening democratic process through quality representation.

Government at all levels have been encouraged to pay greater attention to plans for addressing unemployment and underemployment in the bid to reduce the scourge of drugs abuse and illicit trafficking.

The Chairman, Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, AGPMPN, Ogun State chapter, Dr. Adeneye Kusimo, made the call in Abeokuta while speaking on ways to reduce the growing rate of drug abuse in the society.

Dr Kusimo who described the consumption of hard substances and illicit drugs as poison to the well-being of the youth in the country, said job creation for the teeming youths would also assist to reduce crimes in the society.

The medical expert noted that the burden of drugs abuse was still high despite the existing laws, policies, and prevention strategies, hence the need for stakeholders, including parents to fashion out ways to tackle the menace. 

He also called on the government to provide accessible support centres for the rehabilitation of the affected persons and ensure border patrol to checkmate trafficking of illicit drugs across Nigeria’s borders.

Dr Kusimo appealed to the media and religious leaders to use their various platforms to sensitize the people on the dangers of drugs abuse and illicit trafficking on the society.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ogun State Chapter wants government at all levels to continue to promote exclusive breastfeeding for women in a bid to save the lives of eight hundred and twenty thousand children from infectious diseases.

In a statement jointly signed by the chairperson of the association, Mrs Modupeola Sobukonla and the secretary, Mrs Oluwakemi Orunsolu says breastfeeding offers both nourishing food and good health all in one package.

NAWOJ stresses the need for governments and other development partners to promote and protect women’s access to counseling on skilled breastfeeding as a critical component of breastfeeding support for nursing mothers to make breastfeeding a major component of their feeding pattern for babies.

The association says it is poised to give full support to every effort aimed at counseling and encouraging the women in nurturing the children to become good leaders of tomorrow.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Ogun State chapter has described the unfortunate death of Remo Stars Football Club of Sagamu player, Kazeem Tiamiyu as a condemnable incident that is shocking and received with disbelief.

The association in a statement signed by the Chairman, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde said the untimely death of the young promising and talented defender would have been averted by officers of the Nigeria Police if they had handled the incident in a professional and disciplined manner.

The Ogun State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria concluded that police brutality, inhumane, and shameful acts on citizens they are meant to protect should be stopped.
