Youth and Sports Development Minister Mr Sunday Dare has expresed shock over the death of former Oyo State Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi who pased away on Thursday at age of 70.

According to Dare, “The passing of my elder brother, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, is both untimely and tragic. He served the good people of Oyo for so long. We wanted him to use his experience to guide us through trying times. Sadly, dusk came too early and we must bid goodnight. Sun re, Aare of Ibadan!

“My prayers and thoughts are with the family, and the good people of Oyo State. His death is numbling saddening, but we must submit to the will of God who gives life and takes it when he wills.May his soul rest in peace,” Dare concluded.

Ajimobi reportedly died following his admission in a Lagos hospital due to complications from an undisclosed ailment.

He was a two term Governor of Oyo State under the APC. He was named as the Caretaker National Chairman of the ruling APC following the suspension of Adams Oshiomole by the Court of Appeal.

Late Emeritus Professor Oladipupo Akinkugbe has been described as a colossus who impacted positively on the medical and academic world during his lifetime.


The Cheif Medical Director, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Professor Jesse Otegbayo stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

Professor Otegbayo who was part of the medical team that treated professor Akinkugbe explained that his death was a big loss to the medical fraternity and academic community.


In the same vein a Professor of medicine Solomon Kadiri said Professor Akinkugbe a great man and one of the fathers of medicine would be greatly missed.

He noted that the icon has trained a lot of people who would carry on in Nigeria and abroad especially in the United Kingdom.

Professor Otegbayo said Late professor Akinkugbe was former board Chairman of UCH and during his time the hospital witnessed tremendous development.

Professor Ahinkugbe who died at the age of 87 was first vice Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University, first vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, pro chancellor University of Portharcourt, first chairman of JAMB.

As a nephrologist, Professor Akinkugbe practiced and taught medicine in various universities across the globe.

Ondo state born renowned medical practitioner and academic, Emeritus Professor, Oladipo Akinkugbe is dead.

According to reports, Akinkugbe died in Ibadan on Monday.

He was 87.

The Professor of Medicine Emeritus was born on July 19, 1933 in Ondo State.

He  practised and taught medicine in various reputable universities across the world.

He was the pioneer Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin and also pioneer Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Late Professor Akinkugbe was instrumental to the opening of the famous hypertension and renal clinics at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The performer, popular for hits such as Send Down the Rain and So Long for Too Long, died in his sleep in New York, this was according to his manager Omenka Uzoma.

Writing on Instagram, Mr Uzoma said it was “a time for us all to celebrate his achievements, and not mourn”.

The musician, whose real name was Majekodunmi Fasheke, also worked with stars like Jimmy Cliff, Tracy Chapman and Snoop Dogg.

“He’s done a lot for Nigeria and Africa,” his manager said.

Majek Fashek had been ill for some time but the cause of his death is not clear.

He was drawn to reggae in the 1980s at a point when highlife and juju were more dominant in Nigeria.

The artist said Bob Marley was a major influence as a consequence his musical style and looks mirrored the Jamaican legend.

His 1991 release So Long for Too Long, which carried a strong political and pan-African message gained Majek Fashek acclaim across Africa.

The song was a call for Africans to rise up, both in the continent and those in the diaspora.

He also wrote the song Free Africa, Free Mandela, calling for the release of the leader of the African National Congress in South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

As a sign of his international reach, he appeared in 1992 on the high-profile David Letterman chat show on US television, where he sang So Long for Too Long.

In the mid 2000s there were reports that the musician was struggling with his health.

Pictures of an emaciated Majek Fashek shocked Nigerians who were concerned about the star.

In 2015, he spent some time in a drug rehabilitation centre in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

Reactions have continued to trail the death of the reggae music legend, Majek Fashek who passed on in the early hours of today.

A cross section of the resident of his home state, Osun described his demise as a colossal loss to the entertainment industry and the country in general.

Death where is thy sting? The number one enemy of humanity has wreaked havoc in Ibadan, following the demise of a legal luminary and frontline politician, Chief Osuolale Abimbola Richard Akinjide, SAN.

When the news filtered into the air on Tuesday morning, it sounded unbelievable, but who would query the maker of every creature, who seats in heaven and does what pleases him.

As a mortal, everyone has a strong belief that, there is a time to be born and a time to die. It was the turn of Chief Richard Akinjide to say goodbye to this sinful world.    

Chief Akinjide, who is no doubt one of the prides of Yoruba nation and Nigeria as a whole was born in the city of Ibadan in early 1932, to a famous and influential family of warriors.

He attended the renowned Oduduwa College, Ile Ife, from where he graduated with grade one distinction. In recognition of his leadership traits and excellent performance at the local level, the young Akinjide was appointed the Minister of Education by the then Prime Minister of Nigeria, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa.

Following his unprecedented brilliance and excellent performance, Chief Akinjide travelled to the United Kingdom in 1951, for his higher education and was called to the English Bar, the inner temple in 1955 and later in Nigeria.

A highly versatile and a foremost legal luminary by then, the Ibadan born politician was appointed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice by President Sheu Shagari in 1979.

The defender of the defenseless also tasted the other side of life as he spent eighteen months in detention following the January 15, 1966 coup.

Chief Akinjide was a member of the Judicial System Sub-committee of the Constitution Drafting Committee between 1975 and 1977 and later joined the National Party of Nigeria in 1978 and became the legal adviser of the party.

Under his watch at the helms of affairs of the nation’s judiciary, Chief Akinjide temporarily reversed executions of armed robbers and abolition of a decree barring exiles from returning to the country.

The illustrious son of Ibadan was the lead prosecutor in the treason trial of Bukar Zana Mandara in a court proceedings which led to the eviction of many illegal foreign nationals from Nigeria which contributed to mild violence against some foreigners in the country.

This singular act of the legal icon exposed some weaknesses within the West African Economic Community. The role of Chief Akinjide in the 1979 Presidential Election Tribunal cannot be forgotten in a jiffy.

A detribalized Senior Advocate of Nigeria played a very prominent role which led to eventual winner of the election of National Party of Nigeria, Alhaji Sheu Shagari at the Presidential Tribunal Petition instituted by the candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The triumph of Alhaji Sheu Shagari at the Supreme Court which was celebrated by the National Party of Nigeria earned Chief Akinjide the title of a two third mathematician in the legal profession.

Chief Richard Osuolale Abimbola Akinjide’s legacies of humility, professionalism, brilliance, service to God and humanity would forever linger in the minds of all Nigerians.

Chief Richard Akinjide, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party died of old age related ailment in the night of April 20, 2020, at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.

Also the death of Chief Richard Osuolale Akinjide has been described as a great loss to Ibadan Land in particular and Nigeria nation in general.

Former Governor stated this in a condolence message by his media assistant, Alhaji Lanre Latinwo.

The High Chief of Ibadan Land said that with the death of the legal luminary, Nigeria has lost one of her best hands in Law profession.

Senator Ladoja urged his immediate family to take solace in the fact that the late Senior Advocate of Nigeria contributed his own quota to the development of the country having served the nation to the best of his ability.

He pray that God gives the family, government of Oyo State and the people of Ibadan Land the fortitude to bear the loss.

In the same vein, the former Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adeolu Adeleke described the news of the death of Chief Richard Akinjide as a rude shock and unexpected. 

Mr. Adeleke said nobody want elderly personality endowed with wisdom in both legal and political circle to die. 

The former Speaker said the late legal luminary lived a fulfilled life and prayed that God grant him eternal rest.

Similarly, some residents of Idi Ishin, Jericho Ibadan, who are neighbours of Late Chief Akinjide have begun to troop in to the ROCK residence of the deceased.

Described Chief Akinjide as a major sponsor of the group who was peaceful and always ready to get involved in community issues.

In the early morning visit to the residence of late Chief Akinjide, the Mogaji Ile Aperin of Akinjide family, Chief Alimi Obisesan said the former minister was a mentor to him and will be missed for his brotherly roles. 

Meanwhile, all precautionary measures against the spread of COVID-19 are being observed. 

As at the time of the report only journalists and family members were seen around standing in groups in observance to social distancing.

A former Minister of Justice and Attorney-general of the Federation Chief Abimbola Osuolale Richard Akinjide is dead.

Confirming his death, a personal assistant to the daughter of the deceased, Chief Jumoke Akinjide, Alhaji Ibrahim Ademola who confirmed the development to Radio Nigeria in the Idi Ishin residence of the deceased said the legal luminary died on arrival at the University College Hospital at midnight. 

Alhaji Ademola told Radio Nigeria that the deceased fell unconscious after eating dinner but was immediately rushed to the hospital.

Alhaji Ademola who confirmed that the children of late Chief Akinjide have been contacted explained that he could not ascertain further arrangements considering the present COVID 19 pandemic and social distancing directive until the family meets.
