…alleged that the  road has killed many students, commuters

Staff and students of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti on Monday staged a peaceful protest to call the attention of the government and relevant authorities to the poor state of the only road that leads to their campus.

As part of measures to show their grievances and press home their demands, the protesters in large numbers barricaded the road thus causing heavy traffic congestion which came to stand still for several hours.

In a separate interview, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, Mr. Sunday Akomolafe, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Mr. Adebayo Daramola and Chairman of Non-Academic Staff Union, Adebayo Abubakar said the protest became necessary after the government turned a deaf ear to their plea over the years regarding the road.

According to them, the road has become a death trap alleging that more than five persons have died within this year as a result of accidents occasioned by the poor state of the road.

The staff noted that they have on several occasions contributed personal income to repair the road but its condition was beyond patching but a total reconstruction.

They vowed to continue to barricade the road unless the government took necessary action.

Some of the motorists and commuters stranded in the traffic commended the Polytechnic staff for the courage to call out the government.

The motorists affirmed that they spent all their earnings maintaining their vehicles as a result of the damages caused by the road.

The House of Representatives Committee on Works says it will adopt the use of concrete for road construction against the use of asphalt.

The Chairman, Mr Akin Alabi, during the inauguration of the Committee at the National Assembly claimed that the use of asphalt had led to the deplorable state of road infrastructure in the country.

Additionally, Mr Alabi stated that the committee was prepared to provide sufficient supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works and its parastatals, guaranteeing that any money allocated for road building and repair would be worth it.

He observed that with effective oversight, there would be visible transformation in the nation’s road infrastructure.

“Order 8 (B) Rule 109 of the House Rukes gave the House Committee powers to oversight the Ministry of Works and its parastatals and agencies to ensure that there is value for funds expended on road construction and rehabilitation. Some of the agencies that the House Committee would ensure proper oversight include the Office of Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF), Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), School of Surveying Oyo State and the Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Survey RECTAS amongst others”.

He continued by saying that because of the difficulties facing the road industry, the committee which has representatives from all the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory FCT needs to be more effective and focused.

Reps Pass Nigeria Audit Service Act

The House of Representatives has passed the Nigeria Audit Service Bill, repealing the outdated Audit Ordinance of 1956.

The new bill establishes the Federal Audit Service and grants additional powers and functions to the Auditor-General of the Federation.

The bill, officially titled the “Federal Audit Service Act, 2023,” aims to bring Nigeria’s audit practices in line with current constitutional provisions and eliminate remnants of the country’s colonial past.

The Majority Leader of the House, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, who moved for the passage of the Bill, emphasized the necessity of the changes to enhance the independence and impartiality of the Federal Audit Board, enabling it to effectively carry out its statutory responsibilities.

Before the passage of this bill, Nigeria was the only country out of the 54 African nations without an audit law, highlighting the urgency to address this gap in the country’s governance framework.

Under the new law, the Federal Audit Service will function as a board rather than a commission.

Following its passage in the House of Representatives, the Nigeria Audit Service Bill will be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence, bringing Nigeria closer to a more robust and modern audit system that promotes transparency and accountability in public financial management.

The Oyo State Government has said an alternative route from Oki junction to Olodo Garage will be opened for motorists on Wednesday, while the re-construction of the Olodo bridge is ongoing.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Orientation on Saturday, the alternative route will reduce the hardship of movement of road users.

In the statement, the Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Professor Dahud  Sangodoyin, stressed that the Oyo state government was committed to the free flow of traffic during the period

Sangodoyin stated that ongoing repair works on the alternative route highlighted for traffic management were being rounded up, adding that the contractor has expedited action on the alternative route.

He said, “You remember that we have awarded the construction of Iwo-Road to Odo-Oba road, and due to climatic change that led to heavy downpour of rain, there is a need to construct a new bridge at Olodo. To do that, we need to construct a palliative route for our people to reduce the hardship on the Iwo-Road-Olodo-Odo-Oba road”.

“What we have done now is to identify the easiest way out for an alternative route, and that is why we are here. Of course, I know that there must have been some hardship on the road, especially for people to pass to their homes. That is why I’m here to inspect and to make sure that we are proactive in terms of how to finish the alternative route”.

The statement quoted the Project Manager, Mr. Israel Eleta, saying that the ongoing repair works on the alternative routes highlighted for traffic management were being rounded up.

Raising concerns on some failed sections of the alternative routes, the contractor confirmed that the bad portions are being fixed.

“On the road alignment, we are working on the failed portions; it is an old road, and most of the portions have failed. We have about two or three culverts that are damaged, and we have made provisions for them. Also, we are not putting a culvert; we are putting an iron steel to reduce the date of curing. If we are to use culverts, it will take two or three weeks for the curing, but the steel we are putting is immediate, that is, vehicles will ply over it immediately.”

He explained that the alternative road will start from Oki junction and will end at Olodo Garage, saying that all hands are on deck to ensure the target day is met.

Appreciating the state government for its quick response, a resident of Olodo, Pa Olofinjana Abdulrazak, said the alternative road will ease the stress of motorists and commuters.

Oyo State Government has approved the award of the contract for the construction of the 76.7km Iseyin/Fapote/Ogbomoso road at the cost of N43.1billion.

The Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Professor Daud Sangodoyin made this known while briefing journalists after the executive council meeting held at the Agodi, secretariat, Ibadan.

Professor Sangodoyin who said the road was awarded to two contractors to ensure timely delivery noted that the construction is expected to be completed in 13 months.

The commissioner said: “Today, at the 14th meeting of the Executive Council of Oyo State, we approved the award of the construction of Iseyin/Fapote/Ogbomoso Road, which is 76.7kilometres.

“The road is split into two simply because we want the road to be completed on time and to have quality construction. We also want it to be completed within 13 months.

“The first half is from Iseyin, where we have the Ansarudeen Mosque at Atori junction to Apinwo village, which is about 38.1kms.

“The other half is from Apinwo village to Randa Ogbomoso, which is about 38.7km. These two roads have two bridges, one each. The one on the Iseyin to Apinwo Road is 65 metres span, while the other one at Apinwo/ Randa axis is about 45 metres span with an underpass at the end of the Ogbomoso side.

“The total value for the road is about N43.1b. “The first half is N20b while the other is N23.1b. “The commencement of the process is immediate because the government is going to give an advance payment of thirty percent to the contractors.

“In January, we will also advance them another 20 per cent so that they must have done almost 75 per cent of the job before they can request for any other payment from the government.

“We are also trying to expedite the work during the dry season so that before we get to June/July, the substantial part of the work would have been done.

“The first part of the road is awarded to Messrs KOPEK Construction and the second part is awarded to Messrs Kremborg construction Ltd. These two contractors will be mobilised next week and hit the ground running on the job.”
