Judiciary

A federal lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, Honourable Shina Peller has congratulated Justice Olukayode Ariwoola on his swearing-in as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Honourable Peller’s congratulatory message was contained in a statement he personally signed and shared on his verified social media platforms where he described the new CJN as an embodiment of integrity, justice, truth and the rule of law.

Moreover, the federal lawmaker expressed confidence that the tenure of Justice Ariwoola as the CJN will restore sanity to the judiciary, while he recalled that his late father, Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, once described the new CJN as a trustworthy and upright person who is ever driven by justice for all.

The statement read:

“I congratulate Justice Olukayode Ariowoola on his swearing-in as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“It gladdens my heart, and that of my constituents and the people of Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, to see him reach the pinnacle of his career. I must say that this is indeed a big plus for the people of Oke Ogun, Oyo state and Nigeria at large.

“Years ago, I could remember vividly how my dad, the late Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, described him as trustworthy, upright, and just. Without mincing words, the new acting CJN is an embodiment of integrity, justice, truth and the rule of law.

“With Justice Olukayode Ariowoola at the helm of affairs in the judiciary, it’s safe to say Nigeria’s judiciary system is back on track and there’s no doubt about his immense ability to move the Supreme Court forward.

“The 2023 general elections are fast approaching, and many are confident that the tenure of the acting CJN will restore sanity to the judiciary.

Congratulations once again, Justice Olukayode Ariowoola.”

Justice Ariwoola hails from Iseyin local government area of Oyo State.

A member of the House of Representatives from Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, Honourable Shina Peller, has described as rumour the report being spread by some online media platforms that he has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to another political party.

This was contained in a press statement released on Sunday by Kola Popoola, Honourable Peller’s Press Secretary, where the federal legislator stated that until he personally announces his exit from the APC via his verified social media platforms, any report of defection remains mere speculations, and should be regarded as one by all.

He said:

“My attention has been drawn to an unfounded report going viral that I have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Also, while some speculate that I am now a member of the People’s Democratic Party, some conclude I am now in Accord Party. This is nothing but a rumor, and should be regarded as one by all as I still remain a member of the APC until I announce otherwise via my verified social media handles.

“That I honoured Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeyan’s invitation to his house doesn’t mean I have defected to NNPP. Alhaji Olopoeyan is a family friend, and the fact that we belong to different political parties doesn’t mean I should start playing politics of bitterness with him. I am not that kind of a person and won’t turn to one for political reason.

“It would be recalled that about a week ago, one of the chieftains of our party in Oyo State, had also alleged that I am being secretly positioned by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to be a running mate to Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde in the 2023 Oyo State gubernatorial race. This is also not true, and the recent announcement of Barrister Bayo Lawal as a running mate to Governor Makinde has further rendered the allegation baseless.

“That I commended Governor Makinde on a project that is beneficial to my constituents shouldn’t make one conclude that I am a now a PDP member. Also, Engr. Seyi Makinde is not a governor to PDP members only, but a governor to everyone in Oyo State including myself. I haven’t defected from APC to any political party, and even if I am going to do so, that would be for the people of Oke Ogun in Oyo State to decide.”

A lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency at the lower chamber of the National Assembly and the Ayedero of Yorubaland, Honourable Shina Peller, has described the passing of a revered Yoruba traditional ruler, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo, as a sacrificial exit for the entire Yorubaland and Nigeria at large.

Honourable Peller stated this in his tribute to the late Alaafin of Oyo, where he described him as a father, motivator and youth-driven monarch who would always encourage the youth to rise up to the challenge of taking the lead in the rebuilding process of Nigeria.

The federal lawmaker, who expressed his heartfelt condolences to the entire people of Yorubaland and Nigeria at large, recalled his relationship with the late monarch stating that he grew up knowing the Alaafin as his father and a close ally of his biological father, the late Professor Moshoood Abiola Peller.

In the same vein, the Ayedero of Yorubaland revealed that it was the late monarch that advised him in 2018 to join politics and vie for an elective position even when he had no intention. He added that the late Oba Lamidi challenged him again in 2020 to take up the task of promoting peace and prosperity in the land, hence the conferment of chieftaincy title of Ayedero of Yorubaland on him by the Alaafin of Oyo.

“It was with a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of our revered monarch, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo. His exit is so painful. However, it is God’s promise that every soul must have a taste of death, and we take solace in the fact that our royal father lived a fulfilled life.

“I was very close to the Alaafin, and my relationship with him could be described in different ways. He was like a father to me because I grew up knowing him as one. He was a very close ally of my late father, Professor Peller; they were very good friends.

“Also, the late Oba Lamidi, a youth-driven monarch, was a great motivator to me. He would always tell me about the need for the youth to rise up to the challenge of rebuilding Nigeria. It was on this note that he advised that I joined the political race in 2018, even when I had no intention. I remember vividly how he prayed for me that my people would vote for me as their representative at the lower chamber. And behold, it happened.

“Moreover, sometimes in 2020, the royal father called to inform me of his decision to confer on me the traditional chieftaincy title of Ayedero of Yorubaland, the promoter of peace and prosperity in the land. He explained that our society was witnessing a very critical and challenging period citing the COVID-19 pandemic and insecurity as instances. He added that there was need for me to take up the challenge of promoting peace in the land, adding that my youthfulness, influence, experience and exposure informed his decision.

“So, Alaafin’s exit remains a great loss not just to the entire Yorubaland and Nigeria, but to me personally as his son. He believed so much in me, and I will miss him. I pray that God overlooks his shortcomings, and may his soul find peace with God both in the grave and on the day of Judgement. I also pray that God consoles his immediate family, loved ones, close relatives and associates that he has left behind. My father, the Alaafin, has made a sacrificial exit for us all, and may peace reign in our land even after his demise. Amen.”

A member of the House of Representatives representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Oyo State, Shina Peller has called on the Muslim faithful to leverage the holy month of Ramadan to pray for Nigeria.

Peller made the call via his social media platforms whilst he was congratulating Muslims on the commencement of Ramadan.

He also observed that the Ramadan period was an opportunity for Muslims to purify their mind, body and soul.

Similarly, the federal legislator argued that most of the challenges that Nigeria was confronted with are attributed to system failure.

He added that in addressing this, it was the duty of every patriotic Nigerian to take part in the rebuilding process of Nigeria, which he said required creating a new functional system that would make the existing one obsolete.

He wrote: “I wish every one of us a blessed Ramadan as fasting begins. Importantly, we must remember that Ramadan presents to us an opportunity to purify our mind, body and soul as well as an opportunity to pray for our dear country, Nigeria.”

“Our country is suffering from system failure but God didn’t create Nigeria to fail, our country is blessed with so many natural and human capital resources, so we have no reason to fail. What is required for us at this Holy Month of Ramadan is to pray to God to guide us aright especially in electing the right leaders as the 2023 general election beckons.”

“As a patriotic citizen, I can’t pretend that all is well with our country presently, truly within the last 3 decades Nigeria has been confronted with so many challenges which are all attributed to symptoms of a system failure, and this is what we all have to address. Our founding fathers didn’t build Nigeria for Nigerians alone, but Nigeria for the whole of Africa! With all the resources that God has blessed us with, what genuine excuse do we have not to make Nigeria work? What excuse do we have not to function as a giant of Africa that we are meant to be?”

“Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not trying to blame anyone in particular for the system failure. In fact, this is not the time for blame game, it is the time to come together as Nigerians and pray purposefully for our country; it is the time to do the needful by participating in the rebuilding process of our dear country. In doing so, we need to create a new functional system that will make the existing one obsolete, and this is a task that we all must be willing to carry out. Once again, let’s seize the opportunity of the Holy Month to pray for Nigeria. Ramadan Mubarak!”.

The House of Representatives on Thursday, March 17, 2022, adopted a motion moved by a member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Mr Shina Peller, on the urgent need for Federal Government to resuscitate the Ikere Gorge Dam situated in Iseyin local government area of Oyo State.

While presenting the motion on the floor of the House,  Mr Peller noted that Ikere-Gorge Dam is a major earth filled dam located in Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria, with about four tributaries; namely Ogun, Owo, Amaka and Oowe Rivers respectively.

He added that the dam covers 47km, big enough to supply the water needs of the entire South West. “The Dam was projected to generate sixty (60 megawatts of electricity, to supply water to irrigate over 3,000 hectares of arable land,” he said.

In addition, the lawmaker stated that the Dam has the potential of the ability to supply 82million liters of water daily, but worrisome that the dam, initiated during General Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration and established in 1983 during the administration of Shehu Shagari, had been abandoned for decades.

Similarly, Mr  Peller expressed worry about the deplorable state of the access road (Iseyin/Ikere road) to the dam, adding that it calls for a serious concern. “It is capable of discouraging potential investors and tourists from showing interest in the project,” he argued as he called for urgent intervention of the federal government on the road.

In the same vein, the Federal legislator believed that resuscitation of Ikere Gorge Dam would enhance agriculture which will in turn boost the country’s economy.
He said, “The nation should think post COVID-19 and I believe agriculture is the way to go. The Ikere-Gorge dam which is the biggest in the South West region of the country has the capacity to generate electricity, enhance fishing activities and supply water to the whole South West for irrigation purpose.
“The ripple effect will be the creation of agro-related job opportunities, generation of electricity as well as generating revenue from tourism.”

He therefore prayed that the House resolves to; Urge the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to resuscitate and ensure full functionality and utilization of the Ikere-Gorge Dam.

He also hoped that the Committee on Culture and Tourism and Committee on Appropriation would ensure implementation.

A federal lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Shina Peller, has debunked the news going viral that he is against the choice of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the presidential candidate in 2023 general elections.

Hon. Peller made this clarification via his social media platforms, where he explained that the report being spread by bloggers is a misinterpretation of what he actually said during an interview he granted last month.

He said:

“My attention has been drawn to the news on blogs quoting me to have said that the APC Leader “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not be anointed as President”.

“Sadly, it is a misrepresentation of what I said. To set the record straight, I have nothing against our leader nor his presidential ambition. I have enjoyed a father and son relationship with him for years, and it remains so.

“I commented on the age long political style of forcing candidates down the throat of the citizens, without thinking of the principles of equity, equality and fairness.

“I stated that the rest of the world is leaving Nigeria behind in terms of rapid growth and development.
And only through strong institutions, can we make visible progress in the country, especially in our electioneering process.

“The next general election is a reset period for our dear country. We must get it right! Our collective decision must be based on promoting peace and unity.

“Most importantly, I urge the media practitioners, who are regarded as the fourth estate of the realm, to use their powerful instruments to promote love, peace and unity rather than stir up disunity, disaffection and unnecessary conflicts.”

Education

A Lawmaker representing Iseyin, Iwajowa, Itesiwaju, and Kajola Federal constituency, Shina Peller, has been decorated with an honorary Doctorate degree in Business Administration by the American Heritage Southern California University.

He was decorated During The Africa-Dubai Investment Business Summit held at Habtoor Palace, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Receiving the honor,Peller expressed profound gratitude to the organizers of the event and the school for finding him worthy of the honour.

“Like I always say, I consider honorary awards like this as a challenge for me to double up in my benevolent acts and humanitarian gesture not just in Nigeria but in the entire Africa space.

While speaking on Investment in Africa and Nigeria, the lawmaker expressed worry that Nigeria had not maximized the potentials of it’s natural resources.

” We cannot have a discussion about Africa’s global economic future without mentioning Nigeria. Nigeria is naturally endowed with vast natural resources promising potential national success, but unfortunately this has not always translated. Perhaps it is because regardless of the resources, people and vision will always be the driver of certain and lasting change.

In this regard, we need to start exploring the potential of the Nigerian people with a population of about 240 million and the youth occupying about 75% of it.

Our socio-political environment and its attendant instability is our biggest threat, and to address this, the youth must be used as the driver and sustainer of peace. My point is that stability and predictability are what guarantee investment, and this can only be achieved when there is peace

As Ayedero of Yorubaland (promoter of peace and prosperity in the land), I have considered it a task for me to make all understand that peace is an essential tool for delivering lasting social-economic change and progress in Nigeria, and the youth should be the driver. This is so because we have no bigger constituency in Nigeria and perhaps Africa than the youth. It is time to service this constituency.

This explains why I continuously align myself with the youth initiatives such as the Lead Generation Initiative (LGI) that focuses on equipping young Nigerians to take up the responsibility in their localities through mobilization and political participation. He said.

Shina Peller charged all and sundry potential to begin the required investment in its most valuable resource, the youth.

While maintaining that there could not be lasting socio-economic progress in Africa without peace, Peller added that there could not be peace without the youth as the promoter, driver and sustainer of peace.

A member of the House of Representatives from Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Oyo State, Honourable Shina Peller has called on Nigerians to reflect deeply on the country’s existence as a sovereign nation with a view to correcting the wrong and making the country better.

Honorable Peller made this call on Friday 1st October 2021 in his goodwill message to Nigerians on the occasion of the country’s 61st Independence anniversary.

In his message, the lawmaker reminded all that Nigeria’s strength lies in her unity in diversity and that for the country to progress appropriately, there is need for all to embrace love, unity and peace which he said can be achieved if everyone is fair in his/her dealings with fellow compatriots irrespective of ethnic, religious or political affiliation.

The statement read: “I join well meaning Nigerians home and abroad in observing Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary”. “Fellow compatriots, as we celebrate a new independence year, we should know that every October 1 presents to us an opportunity to reflect deeply on our existence as a sovereign nation, identify our weaknesses and strengths with a view to leveraging on our unity in diversity”.

“Though at 61 as a sovereign country, Nigeria is still confronted with a lot of challenges such as insecurity, economic instability, infrastructural deficiency among other societal ills, we can still get things right with the right mindset and collective efforts devoid of selfishness, tribalism, religious violence and destructive politicking”.

“Importantly, we must know that where there is no love, peace and unity, there can never be meaningful progress, hence the need for us to love one another, embrace peace and unity irrespective of our political, ethnic or religious differences. In achieving this, we also need to be fair in our dealings with one another; no region or ethic group should be considered inferior to others, rather we should give equal right and sense of belonging to everyone especially in our political arrangements”.

“Looking back to 1st October 1960 when Nigeria got her independence, most of the people at the helm of the country’s affairs back then were young Nigerians whose interest and willingness to get involved in politics made it possible for them to assume leadership positions at youthful age. So, the current generation of youths should consider this as a challenge and get involved in the socio-political processes right from our various immediate communities”.

“And like I always say, the best way to achieve this is for youths to register as members of political parties so that we can decide who become candidates of these parties in the general elections. Also, it is very important that we register to get our PVCs so that we can vote in our preferred candidates when the time comes”.

“Once again, as we mark Nigeria’s 61st Independence anniversary, I enjoin fellow compatriots to live, act and work together peacefully in the overall interest of our country. Nigeria will be great again.”

Alaafin of Oyo, oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi has conferred chieftaincy title on member of the House of Representatives, Shina Abiola Peller

Installing Shina Peller and his wife , Ayobola as the Ayedero and Yeye Ayedero of Yorubaland ,Alaafin charged him to assist in defending and uplifting the Yoruba race.

According to Oba Adeyemi, the honour was bestowed on them to demonstrate to the world that hard work paid, saying he was expected to deploy energy, vigour and experience in making life easy for people as their title implies.

Reacting, recipient of the title, Shina Peller who appreciated the Alaafin for conferring the title on him expressed readiness to make the best use of it by protecting the Yoruba people and their cultures.

He described Alaafin as a highly visionary traditional leader who encouraged him to delve into politics.

” Alaafin of Oyo was the first person that from his vast wealth of wisdom advised me to join politics and contest for election in service of our people. As my father, I had heeded his wise counsel, and today, even though politics is challenging, I have never regretted the fact that I listened to his advice. Even though it is not in my personal culture to celebrate awards and honours as I always consider them as a challenge of responsibility, this time, it is different as my inspiring father, His Imperial Majesty has given me wider platform and a greater challenge to continue to promote the peace and prosperity of the Yorubaland.
“In carrying the responsibilities that come with this honour, I am mindful of those cherished lessons and values I have learnt from His Imperial Majesty, who taught me that nothing in life is constant; that we must remember that time is life and things change every here and there; that we must spend everything about us in service of our people; and that there are times some things in the world will be incomprehensible to all. “He said.

Security was extremely tight at the event attended by eminent personalities drawn from across sectiors of the country, including serving politicians and monarchs.

Security expert, Professor Olawale Albert has called on all tiers of government to carry along sub-nationalities in proffering a lasting solution to the security challenges facing the country.

Professor Albert, who is also the Dean, Multi-disciplinary Studies, University of Ibadan, stated this at a security summit organised by member representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Mr Shina Peller to mark his 45th birthday.

Professor Albert argued that community and ethnic leaders were most times left out of the scheme of things in Nigeria, which had made them to lose hope and confidence in the government.

He noted that government needed a well worked out programme of community engagement to assist stakeholders in fighting against criminality as most crimes were believed to emanate from communities.

Contributing, chairman, Nigeria Governors Forum and Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi said the security challenges in Nigeria were surmountable, if Nigerians fight it with honesty, purpose driven, dedication and determination.

Governor Fayemi stated further that all hands must be on deck to collectively rebirth a better nation.

He added that the causes or triggers of the problems, such as insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery to mention but a few, must be dealt with for the country to be developed.

In a goodwill message, wife of former governor of Oyo State, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, said parents, especially mothers should ensure that they instill discipline and godly acts in their wards to prevent them from becoming criminals in the future.

In his message, his royal highness, Oluwo of Iwo in Osun State, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Akanbi opined that traditional rulers should be given roles in fighting crimes as they are closer to the grassroots.

In an address of welcome, the host, Mr Shina peller said he glorified God for sparing his life against all odds and promised to use the power of his office to ensure that the issue of security challenges in the Southwest and Nigeria in general became a thing of the past.

Mr Peller said countries that were in more critical security situation than Nigeria had overcome it, hence the need for all and sundry to come together with sincerity of purpose and commitment in transforming Nigeria for the better.

Mr Peller therefore promised his commitment to influence his other lawmakers to put in more efforts at fighting crimes and other related issues bedeviling the country.

The summit was graced by dignitaries, including the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, former governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala; wife of former governor of the state, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, who was the mother of the day; wife of the celebrant and Executive Director, Lead Generation Initiative, Mrs. Ayobola Abiola Peller; and high-powered delegation from the National Assembly.

The theme of the security summit was “A four dimensional framework for building peace and security in Nigeria”

A member of the House of Representatives from Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, Shina Peller, was on Wednesday honoured in Ethiopia with Distinguished Personality Award by the Jet Age Nation Builders.
Peller, who was honoured in Addis-Ababa alongside other prominent African personalities like Dr. Akinwunmi A. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, H.E Kiwutha Kibwana, Governor Makieni County (Kenya), Dr. Abdul B. Kamara (Ethiopia), Country Manager, African Development Bank, Ms. Aya Chebbi, African Union Special Convoy on Youth (Tunisia) and others, also delivered a paper on a topic – Defining Africa’s Future.
Whilst delivering his paper, Peller emphasized on the pivotal roles of the youth in building and consolidating on sustainable and transformational legacies for African continent, and added that in achieving this, African youths must be ready to deviate from all manners of entitlement to meaningful engagement.
The Iseyin-born federal legislator stated that youths are very vital to the survival and progress of Africa in all aspects and urged them to get involved in political processes by joining political parties to enable them have largest stake in governance.
“We are all familiar with the indices showing Africa’s enormous natural and human resources, though it presents a promise that is yet to be fulfilled. Regardless of these endowments, there are numerous challenges to positioning Africa in its rightful place, some of which include leadership, racism, xenophobia, institutional corruption etc.
“These socio-cultural elements have contributed to the slow turn of the African wheel of progress within and across her regions, requiring a rethink in our approach to governance and the outcomes which cascade from it. Due to this critical nature of government to nationhood and nation building, we must then guide and guard principles of leadership at all levels, as well as the dynamics of politics and politicking. This is because the effects of these activities have real and sometimes unexpected results. This underscores the importance of viable political participation and engagement by society’s most dominant groups.
“Youth therefore, holding the greater percentage of our population, are critical to the survival and progress of the African continent in all respects. Even the seeming “inexperience” of the youth provides an opportunity to free oneself from the boundaries of previous thinking in the pursuit of the future, charted by those with imagination, courage and relevant knowledge.
“This pivotal position requires a focus on the strategic importance of our “youth constituency” to build and consolidate on legacies that are sustainable and transformational. It then means that African Youths must deviate from all manners of entitlement to meaningful engagement.
“If you do not take anything away from what has been said here today, please note this down: As young Africans, joining a political party should be your top priority. And I will advise that you join the big political parties. I say this because power is not served a la carte. Yes, we are young people but that in itself is not a criterion to become a leader. We have to get involved in political processes. With our numbers, we should have the largest stake in governance.
“According to the African Leadership Institute report, we possess an abundance of Young African Leaders but no Seat at the Table. Approximately 700,000 young Africans have already been exposed to some form of selective leadership initiative. What we should focus on is how we can tap into this pool of creative young leaders.
“I say all this to make a simple but critical point: Whenever young people assume the position of influence, we should focus on building strong institutions for accountability, sustainability and educate people about the importance of broad engagements for success.”
