The Ministry of Defence is offering soldiers to support armed police in London after dozens of Met officers stood down from firearms duties.

According to reports, more than 100 officers have turned in permits allowing them to carry weapons, there are more than 2,500 armed officers in the Met.

Police said the action was being taken after an officer was charged with the murder of unarmed Chris Kaba, 24.

Met chief Sir Mark Rowley welcomed a Home Office review into armed policing.

In an open letter to the home secretary, he said it was right his force was “held to the highest standards” – but the current system was undermining his officers and suggested they needed more legal protections.

A Met Police officer appeared in court on Thursday.

In a statement, the Met said some officers were “worried” about how the Crown Prosecution Service decision to bring a charge “impacts on them”.

The MoD said it received a request – known as Military Aid to the Civil Authorities MACA – from the Home Office to “provide routine counter-terrorism contingency support to the Metropolitan Police, should it be needed”.

A MACA is offered to the police or the NHS in emergency situations – the military helped medical staff in the Covid pandemic and covered for striking border staff and paramedics last year.

The Met said it was a “contingency option” that would only be used “in specific circumstances and where an appropriate policing response was not available”.

Military staff would not be used “in a routine policing capacity”, it added.

Last saturday, the Met said its own officers still make up the vast majority of armed police in the capital but they were being supported by a limited number of firearms officers from neighbouring forces.

According to London Assembly figures, in April there were 2,595 authorised firearm officers in the Met Police.

It is a figure which has steadily decreased every year since 2018 when there were 2,841 licenced to carry a gun.

Announcing the review, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said the public “depend on our brave firearms officers to protect us”.

“In the interest of public safety they have to make split-second decisions under extraordinary pressures.”

She said that officers have her “full backing”.

“I will do everything in my power to support them,” she added.

In his letter to the home secretary, the Met Police commissioner said that a system where officers are investigated for “safely pursuing suspects” should not have been allowed to develop.

Sir Mark said he would “make no comment” on any ongoing legal matters, but “the issues raised in this letter go back further”.

He said firearms officers are concerned that they will face years of legal proceedings, “even if they stick to the tactics and training they have been given”.

Previous reviews have not delivered change, he added.

“Officers need sufficient legal protection to enable them to do their job and keep the public safe, and the confidence that it will be applied consistently and without fear or favour,” he wrote.

But in instances where officers act improperly, Sir Mark said the system “needs to move swiftly” rather than “tying itself in knots pursuing good officers through multiple legal processes”.

Former Greater Manchester Police chief constable Sir Peter Fahy said any review would “not be wide enough”, adding he believed there are issues around morale and how police prevent organised crime.

The Coalition of Northern Group, on Tuesday in Kaduna, has aligned on the fuel subsidy removal as announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 29.

The CNG, a coalition of 150 Civil Society Organisations in the North, also knocked the former President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, for allegedly pursuing unpopular deregulation programmes.

The coalition maintained that, the $15.6 billion spent annually on subsidies could build a railway from Lagos to Kano, Port-Harcourt to Maiduguri, and Lagos to Calabar combined.

Spokesman of the CNG, Abdul-Azeez Sulieman while reading from a Communique after a One-Day Town Hall Meeting in Kaduna, insisted that, the N2.91 trillion spent by the Federal Government on petrol subsidy between January and September 2022, was largely responsible for the country’s dwindling public finances.

According to the communique, available data has exposed the unforgivable level of disabling corruption perpetrated with the subsidy regime in favour of a few individuals at the expense of public projects that cost less than Nigeria’s $15.6bn annual subsidy.

It added that, the amount spent annually on subsidy was far more than what is required to build a railway from Lagos to Kano, Port-Harcourt to Maiduguri, and Wembley-like stadiums in each of Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

The Communique partly read, “Successive governments in Nigeria have tried and failed to remove or cut the subsidy, which has greatly constrained Nigeria’s development goals, as the subsidies mostly only benefit a few wealthy households.

“Concerned by the backlash from some quarters that followed the announcement of the withdrawal of the subsidies by the President, CNG convened a one-day stakeholder roundtable of all its 150 affiliates and other northern interest groups at the Arewa House, Kaduna today, June 6, 2023.

Health

The Federal Ministry of Health is seeking the support of state and Local Governments as well as other health care providers in Nigeria to promote the self care health mechanism to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.

This was the outcome of the orientation meeting on National self care guidelines between the Federal and Osun State Ministries, health Partners and Local Government Family Planning Coordinators in Osun State.

From explanation at the meeting, the self care programme enables individual, particularly women to administer the DMPA-SC self-injection on family planning on themselves as well as conduct simple test to determine their reproductive health status.

In his address, the Director of Reproductive Health at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Kayode Afolabi explained that the self care delivery was a new innovation to enable women attend to their health by themselves, without requiring the service of any healthcare provider.

Dr Afolabi announced that the National Guidelines for the Introduction and Scale -Up of DMPA-SC self – Injection has four objectives which include”to provide country specific guidance and tools to roll out facility and community-initiated self injection service delivery to ensure DMPA-SC reaches new users and expand access for women in hard to reach areas”.

Represented by a Deputy Director Reproduction Health, Mrs Remi Bajomo, he remarked that states and local governments had enormous responsibilities to ensure that the message of national guidelines on self care was taken to the rural areas where people with limited literacy resided.

The Osun Commissioner for Health, Dr Rafiu Issamotu hinted that government state was committed to ensuring the spread of the message of self care delivery to the nooks and crannies of the state considering its capacity to help in taming uncontrolled pregnancy and child birth among young girls.

Dr Isassamotu contended that many sexually active young girls got pregnant prematurely with high tendency to procure illegal abortion which might result in mortality, while others who eventually deliver of the child lack the psychological and material requirements of raising a child, thereby resulting in poorly raised individuals who become menace to the society.

Speaking on the initiative, the country coordinator of John Show Incorporated, one of the partners, Dr Adewale Adefalu explained that the self injection of DMPA-SC, one of the self care products, provided women of reproductive age the choice of three additional months of contraceptive coverage while removing the barriers associated with facility -based care, such as cost, access, and stigma.

Dr Adefalu said self care interventions included information, medicine, diagnostics, products and technologies that could be self directed to allow people become agents of their health, especially in sexual and reproductive health where stigma, distance or overburdened healthcare facilities might prevent them from seeking care.

Similarly, the Director of Communication for Pathfinder international, Mr Bayo Ewuola added that the self care delivery covered areas such as Ovulation predictor, HIV testing kit, Cervical self testings, HPV sampling kit and the DMPA self injection among others.
