Child Protection Network, CPN, Oyo State has appealed to the state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde to reconsider his decision to convert the Trans Amusement Park, Bodija into a housing estate.

The appeal was made during a peace walk to mark this year’s International Children’s Day at the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

The CPN is a UNICEF Initiative which sees to gross violations of the rights of children such as lack of access to quality education, paucity of teachers in primary schools and the use of children as street hawkers and beggars to mention a few.

The Oyo State coordinator of CPN, Mrs Oluwatoyin Ogedengbe said Oyo State being one of the first states in Nigeria to domesticate the Child Rights Act, should give utmost priority to recreation centres for children which she said was one of their rights.

Mrs Ogedengbe said the decision to relocate the Trans Amusement Park to the outskirts of Ibadan would deprive the generality of the children of Oyo State of their rights to leisure and recreation.

She appealed to the state government to use the parcel of land in llutuntun, Akinyele Local Government Area, initially recommended to replace the present Trans Amusement Park, for the proposed housing estate.

Easter Monday is set aside by Christians to commemorate Jesus’ meeting with the disciples at Galilee, but equally a time of treatment.

Consequently, Christians use the occasion to visit the recreation Centre while others hold picnics within the church promises.

Radio Nigeria’s correspondents, who monitored the situation in Ibadan, report that most recreation Centres record low turnout in the early hours of the day.

During visits to Agodi Gardens, Trans Amusement Park, University of Ibadan, Zoological Garden and some eateries, a few fun seekers were seen while others were just arriving.

At Agodi Gardens, the fun seekers were few; some church vehicles were conveying church members to the Centre for a picnic.

The situation was not too different at Trans Amusement Park and the University of Ibadan Zoological Garden where vehicles conveying fun seekers and individuals were seen arriving at the Centre.

Some fun seekers at some eateries speaking with Radio Nigeria said their visit to the Centre was meant to cool frayed nerves, while children at Ring Road eateries expressed joy for the visit.

A Youth leader Mr Kayode Ojebode said their visit was to have a get-together and share the word of God.
The Marketing Manager, Trans Amusement Park, Mrs Mary Egbeniyi expressed optimism that a larger turnout would be experienced later in the day.

Mrs Egbeniyi appealed to the residents of Ibadan not to allow the current economic situation to discourage them from relieving themselves of prolonged stress.

The situation was not too different at the Trans Amusement Park, as fun seekers came out in droves while others were patronizing facilities at the park.

In an interview, two parents, Mr. Sunday Ojo and Mrs. Omowunmi Popoola said the economic condition of the country should not be allowed to hinder parents from interacting with their children as well as exposing them to various fun activities.

Some children who spoke to Radio Nigeria expressed joy for the opportunity given them to visit the zoo and the park.
