The Federal Government has inaugurated the ₦40 billion Close Circuit Television (CCTV) Monitoring Centre for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, marking a major step in strengthening infrastructure security and traffic management.

Inaugurating the facility, the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, said the administration inherited the Third Mainland Bridge, alongside Carter Bridge and Iddo Bridge, in a severely deteriorated condition when it assumed office in 2023.

“When we came on board in 2023, we met a very terrible Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge and Iddo Bridge—on the pavement, surface, infrastructure above the water and even below the water,” Senator Umahi said.

He explained that President Bola Tinubu consequently ordered a total re-evaluation and comprehensive rehabilitation of the bridges, including the replacement of faulty expansion joints on the Third Mainland Bridge.

According to the minister, the completed rehabilitation has restored public confidence and improved safety, noting that Lagos residents expressed satisfaction with the quality of work delivered.

“Lagosians were very happy with the President for that beautiful work, and the project is still succeeding because of its quality,” he added.

Senator Umahi commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which built the CCTV centre, for what he described as a professional and high-quality execution of the project.

He disclosed that, as part of the contract, the Ministry of Works would hand over a surveillance boat and two Hilux vans to the Nigeria Police for effective monitoring of activities on and around the bridge.

He added that other security agencies could be integrated into the monitoring framework if necessary.

“The idea of this project is that we now have a lay-by on the bridge and can view everything happening on the bridge in real time,” the minister said.

Senator Umahi also raised concerns about excessive speeding by motorists on the bridge, urging strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents.

Earlier, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olufemi Dare, described the CCTV monitoring centre as the first of its kind in Nigeria, noting that it would significantly enhance bridge surveillance, safety, and rapid response to incidents.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, says governance is measured by the positive impact on citizens’ lives, not by appearances or authoritarian posturing.

‎The Governor stated this while addressing the Iwude Ijesa Carnival in Ilesa, where he insisted that effective leadership was not and should not be a master–servant relationship.

‎Governor Adeleke said governance would soon make a direct positive impact on the lives of the people.
‎”Judge me on my records, outputs and agenda as a governor. That is the globally accepted parameter for measuring leadership.”

‎The Governor maintained that his administration has delivered across all sectors and touched every federal constituency in the state over the past three years, describing his achievements as proof of his capacity and competence to continue leading Osun State.

‎He dismissed criticisms of his administration, urging detractors to assess his leadership based on verifiable records and tangible outcomes, rather than personal style or perceptions.

‎Governor Adeleke, who congratulated the Ijesa people on the Iwude celebration, said his government carried out extensive assessments of development challenges in Ijesaland upon assumption of office in late 2022, which he alleged had suffered years of environmental degradation and revenue loss due to illegal mining activities and lack of accountability under the previous administration.

‎According to him, underground water across Ijesaland had been declared polluted as a result of unchecked mining, while revenues from the sector were diverted into private pockets.

‎He noted that his administration has since embarked on comprehensive mining sector reforms, secured Osun State’s shareholding in the Segilola Gold Project, intensified the fight against illegal mining, and commenced continuous environmental remediation, including a professionally managed river clean-up initiative.

‎The Governor also said that the controversial Ilesa Water Project, had been reviewed, cleaned up, and repositioned for continuation following anti-corruption measures and processing support from the Islamic Development Bank.

‎He announced that the road dualisation project in Ilesa had been completed with the installation of solar streetlights, while the University of Ilesa has become a reality, boasting close to 100 accredited courses.

‎Governor Adeleke who described Ilesa as a hub of entrepreneurship, revealed plans to partner Owa’s Palace on a holistic industrialisation agenda through public-private partnerships.

‎He also made known that Osun’s proposed airport would have a component located within Ijesaland, a move expected to boost trade and commerce.

Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory has launched a new certification and training programme for artisans in the construction industry as part of efforts to stem the spate of building collapses in the state.

The initiative, known as the Certified Structural Integrated Programme, was unveiled at a stakeholders’ forum held in Ese-Offin and Badagry, where block moulders, bricklayers, concrete mixers, steel fabricators and welders converged to pledge support for safer construction practices.

In a statement on Thursday by the Lagos Government, General Manager of LSMTL, Olayinka Abdul, said the programme marked a decisive step in tackling recurring tragedies linked to substandard construction materials.

Without artisans, there is no construction. But with you, we have the power to ensure every construction is safe, sound, and secure. We need to earnestly curb episodes of collapse in high-water-prone communities, and we do not want such in your community. It ends today,” he said.

According to the statement, the CSIP is a five-year assessment programme aimed at certifying construction materials as fit-for-purpose.

It will also produce an official directory of approved block moulders, concrete mixers and steel fabricators, to whom developers will be directed for supplies.

This is not just about enforcement; it is about partnership and empowerment. Together, we can forge an unbreakable alliance that makes Lagos a model for building safety and integrity,” Abdul added.

Technical experts at the forum highlighted the scientific backing for the initiative. Director of the Soil and Geotechnics Unit, Engr. Abimbola Adebayo, stressed the need for mandatory soil tests before construction.

Similarly, Kayode Akinfeleye of the Technical Services Department advised builders to ensure architectural drawings are obtained and preserved, describing them as “a core requirement in the Lagos building process.”

Artisan guild leaders welcomed the initiative. Chairman of the National Association of Block Moulders of Nigeria, Alhaji Fabiyi Oyeleke, described frequent collapses as “disheartening” and commended the forum as a step in the right direction.

On his part, Chairman of the Lagos State Bricklayers Association, Mr. Fashina Aro, noted the peculiarities of Lagos’s swampy terrain and urged all stakeholders to ensure materials and soil tests are completed before bricklayers commence work on any site.

Building collapse has been a persistent challenge in Lagos, with many lives lost and substantial property damage over the years.

In recent incidents, emergency responders have had to rescue workers from collapsed structures.

It would be recalled that rescue teams pulled eight workers from the debris of a collapsed building in September.

Oyo State governor Engineer Seyi Makinde has declared that his administration will restructure Alesinloye Market, Ibadan, to prevent the recurrence of the fire that destroyed goods worth millions of Naira in March.

Governor Makinde stated this when he carried out an on-site inspection of the market, noting that it was sad that, though there was a fire station in the market, it could not stop the fire.

He explained the state government has provided some sort of palliatives to serve as an immediate cushion for the victims of the fire incident.

The governor maintained that the government would work on the market to put in place a proper architecture that could avert future fire incidents.

Governor Makinde equally ordered the suspension of the planned demolition of a section of the market until a proper alternative has been provided for traders.

He added that the state government, the Ibadan South-West Local Government and the Ibadan South LCDA would work on cushioning the effect of the fire incidents on traders in the next few days.

The governor said: “There are two things out there. One is to organise the market itself, because right there where the fire broke out, there is a fire station, but they could not stop the fire. So, we have to ensure that we do whatever is necessary to make sure the fire station is functional. We have to enlighten the people. It is better to avoid anything that can lead to fire incident than to curtail it. So, the advocacy should be that people should store things, especially things that have the potential to get burnt, with utmost caution.”
