The Federal Road Safety Corps has said it will start impounding haulage trucks conveying passengers.

The Sector Commander in Kaduna State, Mr Zubairu Mato, said this on Thursday in Kaduna at a stakeholders engagement on rising fatalities involving haulage trucks carrying passengers.

The theme of the event was “Reducing Road Traffic Crashes Through Stakeholders Engagement”.

He emphasised that haulage trucks were meant for the conveyance of goods, as such the Corps would also prosecute truck owners and drivers conveying passengers.

Any vehicle arrested, the passengers will be dropped to find another means to take them to their destinations and the driver would be sanctioned accordingly.

The Corps henceforth will prosecute any driver or truck owner whose truck is involved in a road traffic crash that resulted in the death of any passenger,” he added.

He lamented that road traffic crashes involving haulage trucks carrying passengers have been on the rise in recent times.

According to him, these crashes have resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries, causing significant economic losses and social disruptions to families and the nation.

Mato said stakeholders such as government agencies, trucking companies, and passenger transport associations, should work together with the corps to reduce the number of road traffic crashes.

The nation continues to be outraged by the frequency of road traffic crashes and high fatality rate involving overloaded vehicles with goods and passengers on Nigerian roads,” he said.

The sector commander added in the fatalities passengers got crushed under the weight of goods, animals, and sundry haulage items.

Mato said reducing road traffic crashes involving haulage trucks required collaborative efforts of stakeholders, on improving safety standards, education, and awareness.

These measures can help prevent crashes, reduce fatalities and injuries, and ensure safety on our nation’s highways.

“By working together, stakeholders can create a safer and more sustainable transport system that benefits everyone,” Mato said.

The Southwest Development Stakeholders Forum, SWDSF, has cautioned against the planned concession of the nation’s airports before the May 29 inauguration of the new administration.

The forum stated that hastening the handover of the airports to private Investors without recourse to due process would plunge the growing aviation sector into industrial disharmony.

In a statement signed by the SWDSF Spokesman, Mr Olalekan Ajia, the forum recalled that the four major airports were concessioned by the Federal Executive Council in 2016 but were marred with controversy bothering on its transparency which it said had yielded unremarkable economic impact.

“We are informed that in 2016, the Federal Executive Council decided to concession four major commercial airports; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, and the Port Harcourt International Airport, ostensibly to attract external or local funding from investors.”

“There are claims that this concession, if it had been handled with transparency, and with due diligence, would have resulted in efficient service delivery, deployment of state-of-the-art terminals, and technology-based facilities from the new investors’ funds and expertise. But there has been a huge controversy surrounding the whole exercise, with key stakeholders labelling it as self-serving and not in the interest of Nigerians. Key stakeholders allege that some of the bidders are mere fronts for some highly placed individuals camouflaging as investors to rip the country off as their own takeaway gifts from the already prostrate Nigerian economy.”

The SWDSF, therefore, urged the Federal Ministry of Aviation to pend the concession process to allow the incoming administration to make input and affect its planned programs on the aviation industry of Nigeria for optimum performance.

It was learnt that the accident, which occurred at about 7.00a.m, left many sympathisers traumatized, as the head of the deceased was reportedly broken by the impact of the tyres.

An eyewitness, who was lucky to have escaped being knocked down by the tyres, explained that the tyres (two tyres attached to a rim) bounced over his head and knocked down the vulcanizer, who was standing in front of him.

He said the tyres later bounced off, after hitting the vulcaniser, to knock down a woman that sells food close to the vulcanizer and her daughter.
“I and my friend Murphy were discussing with the vulcanizer, where he was brushing his teeth with a chewing stick, before a woman that was traveling to Ore/Ondo called him for direction.
“It was while giving direction to the woman that the tyres that flew off from the trailer knocked him down and killed him instantly.
“If he had not gone to attend to the woman, he would  not have been hit by the tyres.” he said.

Radio Nigeria learnt that the witness, and commercial motorcyclists chased after the trailer drivers, who veered into Ataoja Police Station in Osogbo,  after sensing danger.

It is reported that the driver is now being detained by policemen at the Ataoja Police Station with the trailer.

The Chairman, Air Peace, Allen Onyema has expressed the willingness to evacuate Nigerians who are stranded in Sudan, North-East Africa free of charge.

In a statement on Monday, he said Nigerian students and others stranded in the war-racked nation urgently “need our help.”

”If the Nigerians could be moved to a neighbouring country the airline would fly there and evacuate them, as Sudan’s airspace is closed from civil aviation flights”, he suggested.

Onyema said he is compelled to help because Nigeria cannot afford to lose her citizens in that country, and that everything must not be left to the government alone, especially as the situation calls for urgency and immediate action.

“It will be a privilege and honour of tremendous pride that we will be out there to give every Nigerian stranded in Sudan a sense of pride and oneness in their country”.

“We are very ready to do it immediately. No time wasting. Any action that will promote national pride, national cohesion, peace and unity, we are for it. Again, we have no apologies for believing in our nation and loving the nation despite certain national challenges. If they are moved to Kenya or Uganda or any other country, we will move in to get them out. Some parents have started calling on us to help. We are ready to do this again and again,” he said.

In 2019, Air Peace deployed flights to evacuate Nigerians in South Africa when the xenophobic attack against Africans living in that country threatened the lives of Nigerians.

Meanwhile,

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians in Sudan that their safety is its priority.

In a statement from the Embassy in Khartoum, the Charge D’ Affairs, H.Y Garko, has urged Nigerian students to remain indoors while it makes arrangements for their safe evacuation from that country.

According to the statement, it is still dangerous to embark on a journey toward the borders of Sudan without security clearance and guarantee from the Sudanese authorities.

On Saturday, April 15, the Federal Government said it has set up a committee to facilitate the rescue of its citizens from Sudan.

In a statement, the Head of the Press Unit, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Manzo Ezekiel said the committee consists of professional emergency responders as well as search and rescue experts.

Since the unrest started about a week ago in Sudan, there have been calls from Nigerians including the Nigeria Labour Congress for the immediate evacuation of Nigerians from that country.
