Opposition political parties in Nigeria say they will present a single, consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This follows a national summit held in Ibadan, aimed at strengthening efforts to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the meeting, party leaders also resolved to resist what they described as attempts to impose a one-party system on the country.

These resolutions were contained in a communiqué signed by party chairmen and read by a factional leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The opposition parties pledged to defend multi-party democracy and rejected alleged moves to impose President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate in the 2027 elections.

They reaffirmed their commitment to fully participate in the elections, including fielding candidates at all levels, while working towards a unified presidential flagbearer.

The summit also called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, accusing him of bias in favour of the ruling party.

Earlier, the host governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, warned against what he described as a growing concentration of political power in the country.

Governor Makinde said democracy depends on a viable opposition, noting that the dominance of one party risks weakening the democratic system.

Nigeria’s political carpet is moving again.

Ahead of the 2027 elections, the flow of politicians into the All Progressives Congress has been steady and, at times, dramatic.

Governors, serving lawmakers and all categories of politicians have defected to the ruling party.

Some with fanfare, others with quiet paperwork.

The APC has publicly celebrated controlling 31 of the nation’s 36 state governments.

The names behind that number tell the fuller story.

Between April and December, 2025, governors of Delta, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Bayelsa and Rivers States left the PDP for the APC.

In January 2026, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf moved from the NNPP to the APC, bringing lawmakers and local government chairmen with him.

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri arrived in February in what analysts described as a wholesale political transplant.

Most recently, Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, who had strongly rejected calls to defect in June 2025, completed his crossing in March 2026.

In the National Assembly, the arithmetic has shifted.

The APC has more serving lawmakers than any other party, while, nine senators defected to the African Democratic Congress in March 2026 in one of the most significant counter movements in recent legislative history.

The case for defections

Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of association. That right does not expire upon election. A politician who finds their party ideologically unrecognisable, or structurally dysfunctional has a legitimate basis to seek a better platform.

There are historical cases where defection served the public interest.

The 2015 merger that produced the APC itself was a product of political realignment , opposition figures leaving comfort zones to build a coalition strong enough to end sixteen years of PDP federal dominance.

The result was Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power between political parties since 1999.

At the state level, some defections have enabled governance continuity, resolved dangerous internal party standoffs, and produced more stable legislative majorities.

A governor who has defected to align with the federal government’s party can, in theory, unlock better access to federal infrastructure, allocations, and political goodwill.

The outcomes, if delivered, would benefit the people of the state, regardless of the party flag under which they arrive. There is also an argument, uncomfortable but not without merit, that defections expose rather than create weakness.

A party that loses ten governors in twelve months did not simply suffer betrayal. It suffered a confidence crisis it could not survive.

The structural rot was already there. The defections made it visible.

The case against

The problem with Nigeria’s defection wave is not that it happens. It is the pattern, the timing, and the absence of principle.

When governors and lawmakers move in large numbers toward the ruling party before an election, the motivation is rarely ideological. It is existential.

Power in Nigeria concentrates around whoever controls federal patronage, INEC’s operating environment, and security infrastructure during elections.

Moving toward that power is not governance strategy, it is survival mathematics.

And survival mathematics, practised at scale, is a weapon.

What is unfolding ahead of 2027 is not merely a series of individual political decisions. It is a systematic weakening of the opposition, a deliberate erosion of the structures that give voters a credible alternative to the party in power.

When a political party is experiencing defection, it loses campaign infrastructure, state-level funding networks, and the local mobilisation machinery that turns voters into results.

When the NNPP loses Kano State, its crown jewel, it loses its most persuasive argument for national relevance.

The Labour Party, still rebuilding from the judicial disappointment of 2023, watches its potential coalition partners disappear one by one into the ruling party’s embrace.

From the APC’s perspective, this is legitimate political strategy. Brutal, but legal. Weaken what you cannot defeat outright, and arrive at the election with the field already narrowed.

From the electorate’s perspective, it is something else. Democracy does not merely require elections. It requires choices. When opposition parties are hollowed out by coordinated defection before a single vote is cast, the ballot becomes a formality rather than a verdict.

The voter pays a further price at the constitutional level.

The 1999 Constitution requires legislators who defect to vacate their seats, except in cases of party crisis or merger, but courts have repeatedly accepted elastic definitions of “party crisis,” allowing defectors to keep their positions.

For executive officeholders, the law says almost nothing at all.

A governor can defect the morning after his inauguration and face no legal consequence.

The result is a political culture where party platforms are decorative.

Where voters choose a candidate knowing the candidate may not stay chosen.

The Electoral Act does not adequately address this. Its defection related provisions are narrow, focused on candidacy rather than post election conduct.

Recent House of Representatives amendments to criminalise dual party membership, carrying a fine of N10 million, imprisonment of up to two years, or both are a partial response, but they do not touch executive defections, and enforcement remains an open question.

A democracy with one dominant party, a weakened opposition, and no meaningful legal deterrent against electoral mandate transfers is not a competitive democracy. It is a managed one.

The right to political association is real and must be protected. Also, is the voter’s right to a representative who stays representing them, and to an election that still has something worth deciding when polling day finally arrives.

Defections may reshape the field, but they do not own the result. That still belongs to the people.

No fewer than nine senators from different political parties formally announced their defection to the African Democratic Congress on Thursday, further reshaping the political configuration of the Senate.

Those who declared for the party include the lawmaker representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal; his Abia South counterpart, Enyinnaya Abaribe; Binos Yaroe (Adamawa South); Victor Umeh (Anambra Central); Tony Nwoye (Anambra North); Lawal Usman (Kaduna Central); Ogoshi Onawo (Nasarawa South); Austin Akobundu (Abia Central); and Ireti Kingibe (Federal Capital Territory).

Their letters of defection were read on the floor of the Senate during Thursday’s plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

In his letter, Nwoye attributed his decision to internal crises within the Labour Party.

“I wish to tender my resignation amid the ongoing multiple litigations within the Labour Party, which have significantly affected the cohesion and stability of the party.

“Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest esteem and regards,” Nwoye’s defection read.

Reacting after reading the letters, Akpabio welcomed the lawmakers to their new political platform but dismissed suggestions that the ruling All Progressives Congress was responsible for the wave of defections.

He said, “Deputy Senate President and Leader of the Senate, I hope you noticed that I have read (defections) from three different political parties now. So, you cannot accuse the ruling party of tampering with its leadership. Here, we have APGA, Labour, SDP, and all of them.

“So, all of them have a problem. They’ve not been able to put their parties together. So, the APC cannot be blamed for this.

“They are all out to ensure that we have what you call a minority status in this chamber, and I am very proud of them.”

The latest defections further underscore the continuing political realignments in the 10th Senate, where lawmakers have repeatedly switched party allegiances amid internal disputes within several opposition parties.

As of Thursday, the APC retains a dominant majority with 87 senators, while the Peoples Democratic Party has dwindled to seven members.

The ADC, boosted by the latest defections, now has seven senators in the chamber.

Other minority parties include the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), each of which has one senator, bringing the total membership of the Senate to 106.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan has adjourned indefinitely the case involving the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over its elective national convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, which produced Dr Kabiru Turaki as the substantive National Chairman of the party.

The court also granted the parties leave to resolve the dispute amicably outside the courtroom.

Presiding over the sitting, a three-member panel led by Justice Biobele Georgewill stated that if the parties fail to reach a settlement, they are free to return to the court for further proceedings.

During the sitting, the justices advised counsel to properly guide their clients in order to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

The court also urged the lawyers to be mindful of time, particularly in view of the recently released electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Meanwhile, all counsel in their various submissions aligned with the position of the court on the matter.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had recently invalidated the PDP elective convention held in Ibadan, which produced Kabiru Turaki, SAN, as the party’s National Chairman.

Also, Justice Ladiran Akintola of an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan had validated the party’s convention held in Ibadan.

Former deputy governor, Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo, has formally assumed office as the Chairman of the Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the inauguration of a new set of State Executive Committee.

The members are expected to manage the affairs of the Party for the next four years.

The event which took place at the Oke-Ado Ibadan State Secretariat climaxed the congresses of the Party in the state for 2026.

The South West Zonal Legal Adviser of the APC, Barrister Kolawole Majaro, administered oath of office on Adeyemo and thirty-five others who had emerged through consensus at the March 3, 2026 State Congress which was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan under the supervision of Amos Gombi-led Committee deployed to the state from the APC National Secretariat, Abuja.

In his acceptance speech, Adeyemo described his emergence as the new chairman of the APC in the state as another call to service.

“This new State Executive Committee under my leadership is being put in place to add value and strengthen our great Party in view of the challenges ahead of us. I cannot but appreciate all the leaders of the party from within and outside the state for their role in making the recently concluded congresses hitch-free and successful. Special kudos also goes to Alh. Fatai Ibikunle, Hon. Afeez Bolaji Repete and other members of the Local Organizing Committee which facilitated the feat recorded.

“We have used the opportunity of the congresses to showcase our collective commitment to unity and harmony as progressives and democrats. It is a new dawn in Oyo APC and I am optimistic that the current atmosphere of peace and togetherness will be sustained before, during and after the next party primaries as we keep our eyes on the goals of securing 90 per cent votes for President Bola Tinubu and reclaiming Agodi Government House in 2027.

“President Tinubu is, no doubt, performing beyond our expectations and the best way to appreciate his good work is to retain him in Aso Villa until 2031. Against all odds, the president is pursuing his Renewed Hope Agenda with vigour and passion while the positive results are being felt in all the sectors of the economy as well as our national life. Therefore, it is imperative we give him the chance of a second term in office so that he can consolidate on his numerous achievements so far.” Adeyemo stated.

Other members of the executive committee who were inaugurated alongside Adeyemo included; Dr. Taofeek Lamidi (Deputy Chairman), Hon. Fatai Adesina (State Secretary), Dr. Adekemi Opatunde (Woman Leader), Olawale Sadare (Publicity Secretary), Olalekan Oladejo (Youth Leader), Remi Adepoju (Organizing Secretary), Ajiboye Akinsanya (Treasurer), Sunday Aborisade (Legal Adviser), Alhaja Tinuade Adigun (Auditor), Lukman Owonikoko (Asst. State Secretary), Ma Fatimah Hassan (Deputy State Woman Leader), Jimoh Osundara (PLWD Leader) among others.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has asked appointees in his administration with political aspiration to go public with their ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The governor gave this directive at the Oyo State Government-organised Iftar held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, stating that such aspirants should be rest assured of his support once their loyalty and commitment are to the development of the state.

This was as the governor directed the office seekers to use the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the political platform.

Governor Makinde noted that the directive became imperative following claims that he has not freed aspirants seeking political offices, especially those in his government, despite the election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The governor also appreciated the Islamic faithful in the state for their prayers, support and cooperation with his administration, saying these have resulted in various developments, progress and growth for the state.

Earlier, while delivering his lecture, the guest lecturer at the Iftar, Sheik Fadilat Muideen commended Governor Makinde for his uncommon leadership virtues and dedication to the work of God, his family and the people of the state.

The chairman on the occasion, Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Alhaji Daud Akinola thanked Governor Makinde for his consistency in organising the Iftar since the inception of his administration and for his continuous support to the Muslim community in the state.

He sought for more prayers for the state and the country at large.
