This was the exhortation by the overseer of the living Faith Assembly (Winners’ Chapel International), Bishop David Oyedepo during the new year service.
Bishop Oyedepo noted that staying love with the word of God makes ones life a marble to everyone.
“”Romans 8: 28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”. “he said prove me now, if I will not open the windows of heavens”.
Bishop Oyedepo maintained that only the love of God makes one victorious hence it is important to stay in love with him like never before.
“It is the love of God that makes you win without fighting”. “You have to engage Faith in the fight for victory, you don’t engage love, love is a self winning force. It procures victory without requiring your hand”. “You cannot allign with the truth and be trapped. operating by the truth guarantees unto Trumph”.
In another sermon, Pastor Ibironke Olumoye of the Glad Tidings Assembly, Ibadan, charged the congregation to be mindful of their relationships this year.
Pastor Olumoye encouraged the congregation to be selective in their relationships as some relationship can lead to destruction.
She said it was imperative to always ask God for direction before getting close to anyone. “Always ask God for direction in your relationships this year”. “sit down, ask God, who do I relate with, who do I cut off”.
She cited Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another, to emphasise the need for picking the right people in relationships.
Pastor Olumoye maintained that a relationship can make or mar an individual.
It is a brand new year, a year we have not seen before.
And the New Year deserves a “new you”, as the bible says, “You can’t put new wine in old wineskin, else the old wineskin will burst, and the wine would be wasted”, (Matthew 9:17 Paraphrased)
As we step into a New Year, one quiet but powerful resolution we should all consider is this: to become better listeners and more thoughtful thinkers.
Not louder. Not more reactive. Just better.
In a world that constantly pushes us to respond instantly, being able to listen critically has become a rare skill.
Yet, it is one of the most important habits we can carry into a new year.
Listening critically means going beyond the surface—being able to extract quality information regardless of how it was phrased, who said it, or whether it came wrapped in language we don’t like.
It means focusing on substance over tone and meaning over emotion.
One reason this is difficult is that many mindsets have quietly turned into walls instead of bridges.
Some belief systems, when taken to unhealthy extremes—whether toxic feminism or toxic masculinity—sink so deeply into people’s thinking that everything is interpreted through that single lens.
Conversations stop being conversations.
Every comment feels like an attack.
Every opposing view feels like a threat.
This is a terrible place to be mentally, and it is not a good posture to carry into a new year meant for growth.
The New Year should challenge us to relearn emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is not about ignoring your feelings; it is about not letting your feelings control your reasoning.
It starts with the willingness to seek the truth, not just our truth.
Our truth is shaped by our experiences and biases, but truth itself is informed by facts, context, and evidence.
When truth becomes our anchor, our convictions become stronger, yet our minds remain open.
There is wisdom in the saying: “It is a mark of an educated mind to entertain an idea without accepting it.”
This is the mindset the New Year demands.
You can listen without agreeing.
You can examine an opinion without adopting it. You can relate with someone’s perspective without feeling triggered or invalidated.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Radio Nigeria, Ibadan Zonal Station
Becoming better in the New Year also means changing how we handle disagreements.
Instead of fighting opinions with raw emotions, we should learn to engage them with facts, data, figures, and real events—especially recent and verifiable ones.
This is why everyone, in some form, should learn basic data analysis or analytical thinking.
It trains the mind to ask better questions, to look for patterns, to separate assumptions from evidence, and to judge situations more fairly.
When you think this way, you become harder to manipulate and slower to anger.
You stop reacting and start reasoning.
The New Year is not just about new goals, new plans, or new opportunities.
It is about new mental habits.
Habits that allow us to listen more, judge less, and respond better.
If we can carry this posture into our conversations, relationships, workplaces, and online spaces, we won’t just be starting a new year—we’ll be becoming better people in it.
And that kind of growth is worth far more than any resolution we write down.
This is such a tragic and unfortunate incident, one that could have been avoided.
My heart goes out to him, and I pray for the grace for him to heal, as well as for the families of the departed.
May God comfort them all.
What I struggle to understand is why pointing out obvious failures in Nigeria is often labelled as being unpatriotic.
When tragic events occur, proper appraisal and honest reflection should follow; that is the mark of responsible leadership.
Making excuses or shifting blame helps no one.
Even if we assume the driver was speeding, are there no systems in the 21st century to manage speed limits on our major highways? Why was a truck parked by the roadside? Were caution signs placed for oncoming vehicles?
These are issues that fall squarely within the responsibilities of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC.
The aftermath of the accident was equally disturbing.
I watched a video where FRSC officials were walking around while corpses lay uncovered on the ground, as bystanders freely took photos and videos.
Don’t we have basic first-aid and emergency protocols for handling accident scenes? Why weren’t the bodies covered immediately, even before evacuation vehicles arrived? Where were the paramedics? Where were the ambulances? Why wasn’t there a swift emergency response?
Sadly, this scene is not unusual on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
That road has become a nightmare, constantly clogged with trailers and trucks.
This is where enforcement should be focused.
Too often, we see road safety officials harassing regular commuters instead of addressing the core safety issues they were established to manage.
I also strongly believe that all major highways should be equipped with surveillance cameras to monitor speed limits and improve accountability.
This is achievable and should be a priority for the government.
No one is trying to paint Nigeria in a bad light.
Many of us travel and see how systems and structures work elsewhere, even in African countries that are not considered “giants.”
It is simply wrong for those in leadership to withhold good governance.
With heavier taxes coming in 2026, Nigerians deserve transparency, accountability, and visible improvement.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan Zonal Station
Let us fix our schools, roads, hospitals, water, and power systems.
Let us build a Nigeria where basic amenities are accessible and functional.
I love this country, and I have never dreamed of living anywhere else.
Let’s do better.
Let’s make Nigeria work for its people. God bless Nigeria!

There is a timeless truth that echoes across cultures, religions, and generations: what goes around comes around. It is more than a proverb; it is a principle that quietly governs human interactions. The energy, intentions, and actions we put into the world often find their way back to us—sometimes in unexpected ways.
Doing good should not be conditional. It should not depend on who is watching, what we stand to gain, or how favorable the situation appears. Whether we are dealing with an adult or a child, a woman or a man, a stranger or a close friend, goodness should remain our default response.
Goodness Beyond Convenience
It is easy to be kind when circumstances are comfortable. The real test of character, however, is how we act when kindness is inconvenient.
Consider a commuter who stops to help an elderly person cross a busy road, even though it means arriving late for work. Or a market trader who returns extra change to a customer who did not notice the mistake. In those moments, there may be no applause or immediate reward, yet such acts strengthen the moral fabric of society.
As Mahatma Gandhi famously said:
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
Goodness practiced consistently becomes a compass, guiding our decisions even in morally complex situations.
Everyday Illustrations of the Ripple Effect
The principle of reciprocity often unfolds subtly:
A teacher who patiently encourages a struggling child may unknowingly inspire a future leader.
A kind word offered to someone battling unseen struggles can become the reason they choose hope over despair.
A small act of generosity—buying a meal for someone in need—can set off a chain reaction of kindness that extends far beyond that single moment.
Like ripples in water, good deeds rarely stop where they begin. They travel outward, touching lives we may never meet.
The writer Ralph Waldo Emerson captured this idea succinctly:
“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”
Goodness as a Universal Standard
Doing good should not be selective. Society often draws lines—age, gender, status, ethnicity—but goodness recognizes no such boundaries. A child deserves respect just as much as an adult. A woman’s dignity is as important as a man’s. Every human being, by virtue of existence, is worthy of compassion.
When goodness becomes the norm rather than the exception, communities grow stronger. Trust deepens. Conflicts reduce. Even when goodness is not immediately reciprocated, it retains its value.
As Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us:
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
The Reward of Doing Good
The reward for doing good does not always come in the form we expect. Sometimes it is peace of mind. Other times, it is support that appears when we need it most. And occasionally, it is the quiet satisfaction of knowing we chose integrity over indifference.
Goodness has a way of returning—if not directly, then through transformed relationships, improved communities, and a clearer conscience.
Final Reflection
In a world often driven by self-interest and instant gratification, choosing to do good is a radical act. Yet it is one of the simplest ways to leave a lasting impact.
Do good, not because you expect a reward, but because it is the right thing to do. In time, life has a way of honoring that choice. What goes around, truly, comes around.
President Bola Tinubu insists that the new tax laws will take effect on January 1, 2026, as planned.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by President Tinubu on Tuesday and issued by the State House.

The Acts comprehensively overhaul the Nigerian tax landscape to drive economic growth, increase revenue generation, improve the business environment, and enhance effective tax administration across the different levels of government. While some of the laws have gone into effect, others are set to go into effect on January 1st.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of the Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of their bail application.
Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan
The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, on Tuesday also ordered the remand of his co-defendants, his son, Abubakar Malami, and one of his wives, Bashir Asabe.
Justice Nwite made the order after taking arguments from the defence team led by Joseph Daudu (SAN) and the prosecution counsel Ekele Iheneacho (SAN).
Malami and his co-defendants are facing a 16-count money laundering charge preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC alleges that the defendants conspired at various times to conceal, retain and disguise the proceeds of unlawful activities running into several billions of naira.
According to the charge, the alleged offences span several years and include the use of companies and bank accounts to launder funds, the retention of cash as collateral for loans, and the acquisition of high-value properties in Abuja, Kano and other locations.
The commission further alleges that some of the offences were committed while Malami was serving as Attorney-General of the Federation, in breach of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011, as amended, and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.
The Deputy Head of Mission at the British High Commission, Simon Field, recently visited world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua in the hospital following a deadly road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
A statement issued by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Governor of Ogun State, on Monday, revealed that Field met with Joshua during his hospital visit.
He also engaged in discussions with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. British officials are closely monitoring the ongoing situation surrounding the tragic incident.
“The British High Commission was formally notified of the accident. Officials of the Mission are monitoring developments and remain in contact with the hospital and the Ogun State Government.
“The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Simon Field, visited the hospital and met with Anthony Joshua and the two governors. The families of the deceased have also been contacted through the High Commission,” the statement read.
The accident, which took place around midday on Monday, involved a Toyota Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua and three other passengers.
The statement confirmed that two of the vehicle’s occupants lost their lives in the crash. They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen.
In the aftermath of the crash, Governor Dapo Abiodun visited the Lagos hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment and was later joined by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Both governors are said to have stayed at the hospital for several hours to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the boxer received the necessary medical care.
Commenting on the incident, Governor Abiodun stated that he rushed to the hospital as soon as he was informed about the accident and personally oversaw Joshua’s treatment, alongside Governor Sanwo-Olu.

The Governor explained that the 2026 budget aligns with his administration’s five-point agenda and reflects renewed ambition to deepen good governance while rolling out new initiatives for the benefit of the people of Osun State.
He said his administration has, over the last three fiscal years, laid a solid foundation for sustainable development by completing several abandoned projects, initiating new ones and settling billions of naira in outstanding pension and salary arrears.
He noted that workers’ welfare has remained a priority, with the payment of promotion arrears and long-neglected allowances.
Governor Adeleke highlighted significant investments across previously underserved sectors, including agricultural mechanisation, healthcare, school rehabilitation, energy innovation, science and climate change.
Looking ahead, he described 2026 as both a year of consolidation and political transition, noting that governance would not be sacrificed despite the demands of an election year.

The governor expressed gratitude to the people of Osun for their continued support and goodwill, pledging not to disappoint workers, youths, women, artisans, students, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
Earlier, the Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, Prince Adewale Egbedun had noted that the 2026 budget reflects the effectiveness and commitment of the current government to the welfare of the people of the state.

The Osun State chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE has directed its members to resume work on 5th January 2026, ending an 11-month strike across the state.
Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan
According to a statement made available to newsmen by the union’s President, Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe, NULGE said the decision followed a series of Security Council meetings to deliberate on guarantees for the safe resumption of work at the Councils.
Dr. Ogungbangbe demanded the deployment of adequate security personnel to all local government secretariats ahead of the planned resumption.
The Statement reads, “As you are aware, our members were asked to withdraw their services and embark on a sit-at-home action following the volatile security situation arising from the leadership tussle and rival political friction between PDP and APC over the control of Local Government Secretariats in Osun State. To safeguard the lives of our members, we had no choice but to vacate these premises.
“However, following internal deliberations, the union has resolved that its members shall resume work on Monday, 5th January, 2026.” It states further.
Dr. Ogungbangbe stressed that local government employees must not be exposed to security threats, insisting that civil servants are law-abiding citizens who deserve full protection to carry out their duties without fear.
The Osun NULGE President maintained that the councils could function without elected chairmen, noting that the Head of Local Administration, alongside the directors of administration and finance, could effectively run the councils in line with the Osun State Local Government Accounts Administration Law, 2025.
Recalled, activities at local government secretariats across Osun had been grounded since February 17, when the union directed its members to withdraw their services.
NULGE had explained that the strike was to prevent its members from becoming victims of a power struggle involving chairmen elected during the October 15, 2022 local government elections conducted under the administration of former governor Adegboyega Oyetola and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party over control of the councils.
Ogun State House of Assembly has passed the Year 2026 Appropriation Bill of one point seven trillion presented by the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun barely 26 days ago.
Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan
The passage of the Appropriation Bill was consequent upon the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, chaired by Mr Musefiu Lamidi, who thereafter moved the motion for its adoption, seconded by Mr Folawewo Salami and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote during the plenary presided over by Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Clerk, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, thereafter took the third reading of the bill before the State lawmakers; while the Speaker later directed that the clean copy of the bill be transmitted to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
Earlier while presenting the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation’s report on the bill titled: “Year 2026 Appropriation Bill“, Mr Lamidi said that the Assembly adjusted the budget proposals of three MDAs, part of which led to a slight upward review of the Internally Generated Revenue to the tune of two point one nine three billion naira the same figure was reduced from the capital receipt, retaining the total actual budget expenditure of one point seven trillion naira earlier presented to the State lawmakers by the Governor.
In a related development, the Assembly had earlier passed the Year 2025 Revised Appropriation Bill and that of the Revised Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF for Year 2026-2028.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun Sector Command, has attributed a road crash that killed two persons and injured Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua to over-speeding and wrongful overtaking.
The Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr. Akinwunmi Fasakin, said the crash involved five persons.
He said two persons died, one person was injured, while two others escaped unhurt.
Mr. Fasakin said operatives of the Sagamu Unit Command, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, promptly responded to the incident.
He confirmed that Anthony Joshua, who sustained injuries in the crash, was taken to an undisclosed hospital by security operatives attached to him.
Merry Christmas from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan Zonal Station
The FRSC Sector Commander said a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has commenced.
He added that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.
British Former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, has survived a fatal car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria, which claimed the lives of two British men travelling with him.
The crash occurred on Monday along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck.
Police confirmed that Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries while seated in the rear of the vehicle.
“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” said Ogun State Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi.
“He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and [is] receiving medical attention.”
A witness, Adeniyi Orojo, noted that Joshua was travelling with three others when the crash occurred.
“Joshua was seated behind the driver with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash,” he said.
Orojo added that the passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua died instantly.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in a statement after the incident on Monday, confirmed that five men were involved, with two fatalities, one injury, and two escaping unhurt.
The remains of the deceased, identified as British nationals, were deposited at Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well parked by the side of the road,” Ogungbemide said.
The Ogun State Government expressed condolences to the bereaved families and sympathy to Joshua. Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, described the incident as “deeply unfortunate and painful, particularly with the loss of precious lives.”
He added, “Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the State considers a devastating loss. As we mourn collectively, we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also reacted. In a post on his verified X account on Tuesday, Atiku said he was “deeply saddened” by news of the incident, which occurred in the Makun area of the state, and offered prayers for Joshua’s recovery.
“Heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of the two individuals who tragically lost their lives in the accident.”
Joshua, who has family roots in Sagamu, was in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on 19 December, a fight he won by sixth-round knockout. The bout marked his return to the ring after a 15-month layoff, with plans already underway for a potential clash with Tyson Fury in 2026.
The accident has prompted renewed warnings from the FRSC to motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and excessive speed, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes are at their highest.
The damaged Lexus SUV has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division office, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Joshua remains under medical observation at an undisclosed hospital, while tributes continue to pour in for the two men who lost their lives in the incident.
The “act” of using leaves for wrapping food in Nigeria is a cultural tradition that has been practiced for centuries till date.
However, its prevalence is diminishing in urban areas due to the convenience of modern packaging materials and a lack of skill transfer to younger generations.
The particular leaf used for wrapping Moin-moin and other delicacies such as Amala, Pounded yam, Ekuru, Rice, is botanically known as Thaumatology daniellii.
It is called Uma leaf in Igbo language, Ewe Eran among the Yorubas and Katamfe/Katempfe in other African communities.
Research shows that the leaf is medicinal and rich in antioxidant.
The plant grows three to four meters in height, and has large, papery leaves up to 46 centimeters long. In its native range, the plant has a number of uses besides flavouring.
The sturdy leaf petioles are used as tools and building materials, the leaves are used to wrap food, and the leaves and seeds have a number of herbal uses.
These leaves are good for wrapping food items for cooking such as moinmoin (bean pudding), Ogi (corn starch), Eko (steamed corn starch), Ofada rice, pounded yam, cocoyam pudding among others.
It takes skill to put the bean paste into the carefully folded leaves, and ensure that when the wrap is placed in a pot to steam, it doesn’t leak.
The phytochemical analysis shows that the leaves are rich in flavonoid, alkaloids, saponin, tannin anthraquinones, and steroid.
The fact that these leaves contain a sweet protein called thaumatin, explains why foods steamed in them taste better.
From research, moin moin cooked with leaf tastes better than one made with foil, milk tin, nylon, aluminum cups and other wrapping materials.
Aside the flavour, it also extends the shelf life of food.
For instance cornmeal pudding popular called Eko among the Yorubas and Agidi by the Igbos can remain fresh inside leave wrapper for as long as seven days, but when wrapped in nylon, it hardly takes four days before the colour changes.
While report shows that food packed in disposable cup, Styrofoam packs, nylon bags, plastic straws were toxic to human health.
Using nylon (cellophane) bags to cook moin- moin is considered unsafe because the heat from cooking can cause toxic chemicals, such as dioxins and phthalates, to leach into the food. These chemicals can pose significant health risks.
Health experts and food safety agencies have raised serious concerns about this practice due to the potential for hazardous substances to migrate into the meal.
Potential health effects associated with consuming food cooked in nylons or certain plastics include:
Cancer Risk: Dioxins, which may be produced when some nylons or cellophane bags are heated, are a group of highly toxic compounds linked to cancer.
Hormonal Interference: The leached chemicals can act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with the body’s hormones.
Reproductive and Developmental Problems: Exposure to these toxins is associated with potential issues in reproductive and developmental systems.
Immune System Damage: These persistent environmental pollutants (POPs) can also cause damage to the immune system.
Bacterial Contamination: Studies have also shown that moin-moin packaged in nylon bags is more likely to be contaminated with various microorganisms (e.g. Staphylococcus, Bacillus cereus) when compared to other materials, often due to poor hygiene during handling.
Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan
Styrofoam and nylon bags for packing foods are not only harmful to human health, the packs also contributes to environmental pollution.
Benefits of wrapping food with moin-moin leaves include:
Cultural Heritage: The use of leaves is an age-long tradition, deeply embedded in local food culture and identity.
Sustainability: It is considered an environmentally friendly and biodegradable alternative to modern single-use plastics and Styrofoam, which have recently faced government bans in some Nigerian states like Lagos.
Though, food wrapped in leaves are healthy, proper handling must be put into consideration.
You must ensure that the leaves are thoroughly washed with clean water to get rid of dirt and germs before they are used.
So, in the festive period, you might want to give cooking moin-moin with leaves a big shot.
Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky said progress had been made to end the Ukraine war during talks in Florida, but failed to reach a breakthrough on a few of the thorniest issues.
The US and Ukrainian leaders met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home on Sunday to discuss a revised peace plan, several key parts of which Russia has already rejected.
On Monday, Zelensky said the US had offered security guarantees for a period of 15 years. Trump said on Sunday an agreement on this point was “close to 95%” done.
But little has been said on the future of Ukraine’s contested Donbas region, which Russia seeks to control in its entirety.
Moscow currently controls about 75% of the Donetsk region, and some 99% of the neighbouring Luhansk. The two regions are known collectively as Donbas.
Speaking to reporters after the talks, Trump said a deal on Donbas remained “unresolved, but it’s getting a lot closer”.
Its fate has been a major obstacle throughout negotiations, with Russia consistently unwilling to compromise on its aim to seize its full control.
On Monday, the Kremlin again said Ukraine should withdraw its troops from the part of Donbas Kyiv still controls. Ukraine has insisted the area could become a free economic zone policed by Ukrainian forces – but Zelensky has underlined that any talks on this should include the Ukrainian people, Reuters news agency reported.
The US president has repeatedly changed his own position on Ukraine’s lost territories, and in September stunned observers by suggesting that Ukraine might be able to take it back. He later reversed course.
Addressing reporters at Mar-a-Lago after Sunday’s talks, Zelensky repeated his belief that an overall peace agreement was 90% of the way there, a figure he had given in the days leading up to his visit.
Both leaders also indicated there had been progress on one key sticking point – security guarantees for Ukraine.
Zelensky later said the US had offered security guarantees for an extendable period of 15 years, but Kyiv wanted the option of having them for up to 50 years. He said he hoped the guarantees would begin the moment Kyiv signed a peace deal, Reuters reported.
The US has not yet commented on the time frame. On Sunday, Trump said an agreement was close and that he expected European countries to “take over a big part” of that effort with support from the US.
Trump, meanwhile, floated the possibility of trilateral talks between the US, Russia, and Ukraine, saying it could happen “at the right time”.
While the US president is keen to add the Ukraine-Russia war to the list of conflicts he claims to have ended, he cautioned that stalled or scrapped talks that go “really badly” could mean that the war continues.
Zelensky suggested the Ukrainian officials could meet at the White House in January, potentially alongside European leaders, as the US and Ukrainian delegations finalise plans for further talks.
In a post-meeting call with European allies, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed “good progress” in the Florida talks while reinforcing the need for “ironclad security guarantees” for Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron also said Kyiv’s allies would meet in Paris next month to discuss security guarantees.
Zelensky later said that a peace plan should be put to a referendum in Ukraine, saying a 60-day ceasefire would be necessary for such a vote to take place.
However, Russia does not back a temporary ceasefire, an issue which reportedly came up on a call between Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin ahead of Sunday’s meeting.
Yuri Ushakov, Russia’s former US ambassador, said Trump listened to the Kremlin’s assessment of the proposals and the two presidents left the call united in their belief that a temporary ceasefire proposed by the EU and Ukraine would instead prolong the conflict.
The US president who initiated the call acknowledged that Moscow had little interest in a ceasefire that would allow Ukraine to hold a referendum.
“I understand that position,” he added.
Little further detail was offered, although Trump said he believed the Russian leader “wants Ukraine to succeed”.
Meanwhile, strikes continued overnight In Ukraine.
Kyiv said 25 airstrikes were carried out by Russia on Sunday, 21 of which were shot down.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence said 89 UAVs were intercepted by them on Sunday night – the vast majority of which were over the Bryansk region.

A United States congressman, Mr Riley Moore, has drawn a sharp contrast between deadly Christmas attacks in Nigeria and recent United States military action against Islamist militants, saying this year marked a decisive shift from bloodshed to retaliation.
Writing on Saturday on X, Mr Moore recalled that Nigerian Christians were killed during the last two Christmas seasons.
He noted, however, that this year, extremist groups became the target of military action instead.
“For the past two Christmases, Christians have been murdered in Nigeria. This year, thanks to @POTUS, radical Islamic terrorists were on the receiving end of 12 Tomahawk missiles as a present,” Mr Moore wrote.
He added that the coordinated strikes against Islamic State fighters, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian government, represented an initial step toward restoring security and halting the killing of Christians.
Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan
“The successful strikes on ISIS, in coordination with the Nigerian government, are just the first step to secure the country and end the slaughter of our brothers and sisters in Christ,” he stated.
Recall that the United States President, Mr Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that American forces carried out lethal airstrikes against Islamic State terrorists in northwestern Nigeria.
He warned that further attacks would follow if militants continued to target Christians.
President Trump stated this on his Truth Social platform, saying the Department of War executed what he described as “numerous perfect strikes.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria confirmed the airstrikes on Friday.
The Nigeria Police Force has scored a major operational breakthrough with the arrest of two notorious bandits and kidnapping kingpins linked to violent crimes across Katsina, Zamfara, Niger, and Kwara States.
Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID–IRT), working in collaboration with the Kwara State Police Command, arrested the suspects on Friday, December 19, 2025, during a covert operation along the Komen–Masallaci axis in Kaiama Local Government Area.
Police identified the suspects as Abubakar Usman, alias Siddi, aged 26, and Shehu Mohammadu, alias Gide, aged 30.
Operatives apprehended both men at Komen–Masallaci village during the operation.
Items recovered from the suspects included a brand-new red Honda Ace 125 motorcycle, valued at ₦1.85 million and allegedly bought with ransom proceeds; ₦500,000 cash believed to be unspent ransom money; and one AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects belong to a notorious banditry and kidnapping syndicate terrorising communities across the North-West and North-Central regions.
Police further disclosed that the gang supplies arms and ammunition to other criminal elements.
The suspects are currently cooperating with investigators to help track down other members of the syndicate and recover more weapons.
Police also confirmed that Abubakar Usman was recently identified in a viral social media video where firearms and large sums of money were openly displayed.
