A United States congressman, Mr Riley Moore, has drawn a sharp contrast between deadly Christmas attacks in Nigeria and recent United States military action against Islamist militants, saying this year marked a decisive shift from bloodshed to retaliation.

Writing on Saturday on X, Mr Moore recalled that Nigerian Christians were killed during the last two Christmas seasons.

He noted, however, that this year, extremist groups became the target of military action instead.

“For the past two Christmases, Christians have been murdered in Nigeria. This year, thanks to @POTUS, radical Islamic terrorists were on the receiving end of 12 Tomahawk missiles as a present,” Mr Moore wrote.

He added that the coordinated strikes against Islamic State fighters, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian government, represented an initial step toward restoring security and halting the killing of Christians.

Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan

“The successful strikes on ISIS, in coordination with the Nigerian government, are just the first step to secure the country and end the slaughter of our brothers and sisters in Christ,” he stated.

Recall that the United States President, Mr Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that American forces carried out lethal airstrikes against Islamic State terrorists in northwestern Nigeria.

He warned that further attacks would follow if militants continued to target Christians.

President Trump stated this on his Truth Social platform, saying the Department of War executed what he described as “numerous perfect strikes.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria confirmed the airstrikes on Friday.

The Nigeria Police Force has scored a major operational breakthrough with the arrest of two notorious bandits and kidnapping kingpins linked to violent crimes across Katsina, Zamfara, Niger, and Kwara States.

Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID–IRT), working in collaboration with the Kwara State Police Command, arrested the suspects on Friday, December 19, 2025, during a covert operation along the Komen–Masallaci axis in Kaiama Local Government Area.

Police identified the suspects as Abubakar Usman, alias Siddi, aged 26, and Shehu Mohammadu, alias Gide, aged 30.

Operatives apprehended both men at Komen–Masallaci village during the operation.

Items recovered from the suspects included a brand-new red Honda Ace 125 motorcycle, valued at ₦1.85 million and allegedly bought with ransom proceeds; ₦500,000 cash believed to be unspent ransom money; and one AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects belong to a notorious banditry and kidnapping syndicate terrorising communities across the North-West and North-Central regions.

Police further disclosed that the gang supplies arms and ammunition to other criminal elements.

The suspects are currently cooperating with investigators to help track down other members of the syndicate and recover more weapons.

Police also confirmed that Abubakar Usman was recently identified in a viral social media video where firearms and large sums of money were openly displayed.

Commending the operatives for their professionalism, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s resolve to dismantle criminal networks, curb banditry and kidnapping, and guarantee public safety nationwide.

The Police urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to strengthen ongoing operations.

Record holders, the Pharaohs of Egypt, have drawn first blood at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, becoming the first team to qualify for the Round of 16.

Egypt edged Bafana Bafana of South Africa 1–0 in a tense Group B clash, with Mohammed Salah keeping his nerve to convert a decisive penalty just before halftime in the 45th minute.

The narrow victory sealed Egypt’s place in the knockout stage and reaffirmed their status as tournament heavyweights.

Meanwhile, hosts Atlas Lions of Morocco missed the chance to secure back-to-back wins after the Eagles of Mali forced a 1–1 draw, slowing the hosts’ early momentum.

Elsewhere on Friday, Angola and Zimbabwe settled for a 1–1 draw, while Zambia and Comoros produced the tournament’s first goalless encounter.

Attention now shifts to Saturday, as the Super Eagles of Nigeria chase back-to-back victories when they face the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia at 9:00 p.m.

The Defence Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia in a joint statement have agreed to an immediate ceasefire.

According to report, the two sides have agreed to freeze the front lines where they are now, and allow civilians living in border areas to return home, halting almost three weeks of intense clashes in which hundreds of soldiers are believed to have died and nearly one million people displaced.

The statement says that, the ceasefire took effect at noon local time (05:00 GMT) on Saturday.

Once it has been in place for 72 hours, 18 Cambodian soldiers held by Thailand since July will be released, while breakthrough came after days of talks between the two countries, with diplomatic encouragement from China and the US.

Thailand’s Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit described the ceasefire as a test for the “other party’s sincerity”.

“Should the ceasefire fail to materialise or be violated, Thailand retains its legitimate right to self-defence under international law,” he told reporters.

Thailand had been reluctant to accept the ceasefire, saying the last one was not properly implemented. They also resented what they saw as Cambodia’s efforts to internationalize the conflict.

Unlike the last ceasefire in July, US President Donald Trump was absent from this one, although the US State Department was involved.

That ceasefire agreement collapsed earlier this month, when fresh clashes erupted, as both sides have blamed each other for the breakdown of the truce.

The Nigerian Army has issued a warning over a fraudulent recruitment advertisement circulating on social media and other online platforms, which claims that the Direct Short Service Course (DSSC) 29 Application Form 2026 is available.

In a statement on the Nigerian Army’s X account posted by the acting Director of the Directorate of Army Public Relations, Anele Appolonia, on Friday, the Army described the advertisement as fake, false, and misleading, stressing that no such recruitment exercise has been authorised or announced by the Nigerian Army.

The statement clarified that the Army has not commenced any recruitment or commissioning for the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) or Short Service Commission (SSC) at this time. Members of the public are therefore urged to disregard the advertisement, as it did not originate from the Army or any of its authorised channels.

The Nigerian Army emphasised that whenever recruitment exercises are officially approved, the public will be duly informed through official channels, including the Nigerian Army website, verified social media accounts, national newspapers, and other recognised communication platforms.

The Army further cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant against fraudsters who exploit fake recruitment notices to deceive and extort unsuspecting individuals. It reiterated that recruitment into the Nigerian Army is free of charge.

“Members of the public with information about such fraudulent activities or the individuals behind them are encouraged to report immediately to the nearest security agency or appropriate authorities for necessary action.

“Anyone with information regarding such fraudulent activities or individuals involved is encouraged to promptly report to the nearest security agency or appropriate authorities for necessary action,” the statement read.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced a breakthrough in the fight against insecurity following the arrest of two notorious kidnapping kingpins whose operations spanned across four northern states.

In a statement released on Friday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended during a high-stakes covert operation in Kwara State.

The operation, conducted by the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID–IRT) in collaboration with the Kwara State Command, led to the arrest of Abubakar Usman (alias Siddi), 26, and Shehu Mohammadu (alias Gide), 30.

“The suspects were intercepted along the Komen–Masallaci axis in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State,” Hundeyin stated.

“Preliminary investigation revealed they are members of a notorious banditry and kidnapping gang terrorising communities across Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, and Kwara states,” he added.

The police recovered significant incriminating items during the raid, “including an AK-47 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition and ₦500,000 in cash, which the authorities identified as unspent ransom money.”

Also seized was a brand new Honda Ace 125 motorcycle valued at ₦1,850,000.

“Investigations revealed the motorcycle was purchased with proceeds of ransom payments.

“Further findings indicate that the gang also doubles as suppliers of arms and ammunition to criminal elements” the FPRO added.

One of the suspects, Abubakar Usman (Siddi), had reportedly been on the police radar for some time.

He was recently identified as the individual in a viral social media video seen flaunting illegal firearms and large sums of cash.

Hundeyin noted that the suspects are currently “cooperating with investigators to enable the arrest of other members of the syndicate and recovery of additional weapons.”

Reacting to the breakthrough, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the operatives for their “professionalism and dedication” to the mission.

“The Force remains unwavering in its commitment to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety of all citizens,” the IG was quoted as saying.

The police high command urged the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to aid ongoing security efforts across the country.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, says Nigeria provided the intelligence that led to the United States’ airstrike on terrorist targets in the country and formally approved the operation before it was carried out.

Tuggar stated this on Friday while speaking on Channels Television, a day after the US confirmed it had conducted a strike as part of counter-terrorism operations.

According to the minister, the operation was the outcome of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States and was not motivated by religious considerations.

He said, “It’s Nigeria that provided the intelligence. I was on the phone yesterday for 19 minutes with Secretary of State Marco Rubio of the United States. We spoke extensively, and we agreed that I was going to speak with President Tinubu for President Tinubu to give the go-ahead.

“And I did speak with him and it was agreed also that the statements that would follow would be statements that would show clearly that it is a strike against terrorism and that it is part of the ongoing joint operations between Nigeria and collaboration between Nigeria and the United States.”

Tuggar said Nigeria had long sought deeper collaboration with the United States and other countries to combat terrorism, describing the strike as a vindication of the Tinubu administration’s security strategy.

The minister added, “Nigeria has remained consistent in its approach, which is to work with all partners that are committed to the fight against terrorism, irrespective of what religion, who the victims are, whether they are Muslims or  Christians, and irrespective of what type of terrorism, be it terrorism being carried out in the name of one religion or the other, or indeed even bandage. So this is an ongoing process.

Merry Christmas Greetings from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan

“We have been working closely with the Americans. This is what we’ve always been hoping for: to work with the Americans, work with other countries to combat terrorism, to stop the death of innocent Nigerians. So this is a vindication of the Tinubu administration.

“For those who thought that there was some foot-dragging or, you know, the government wasn’t doing enough, it is a clear indication that we are committed and we are prepared to work with all countries.”

He stressed that the operation had nothing to do with religion, noting that its sole purpose was to protect innocent lives, whether Nigerian or foreign.

“It is not to do with religion, it is to do with protecting Nigerians and the innocent lives of either Nigerians or non-Nigerians. This was clear. We spoke twice.

“We spoke for 19 minutes before the strike, and then we spoke again for another five minutes before it went on,” he said.

The US President, Donald Trump, on Thursday confirmed the US carried out an airstrike targeting suspected terrorist elements in Nigeria.

Reports say that US officials said the operation was conducted based on shared intelligence and in coordination with Nigeria’s government, amid ongoing efforts to weaken extremist groups operating in parts of the country.

Months before the strike, Trump had warned that Washington could take action against terrorist groups operating in Nigeria, citing repeated attacks and what he described as violence targeting Christian communities.

Trump’s comments at the time drew mixed reactions in Nigeria, with officials insisting that insecurity in the country was not religiously motivated and that both Muslims and Christians had been victims of terrorism and banditry.

Nigeria has for years faced multiple security threats, including insurgency by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province in the North-East, as well as banditry and terror attacks across the North-West, leading to thousands of deaths and widespread displacement.

Although, the US has long supported Nigeria through intelligence sharing and military assistance, direct US strikes on Nigerian territory are uncommon and often draw public attention.

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky has given a positive assessment of a conversation he had with US envoys on how to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Zelensky said Thursday’s call with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, which lasted nearly an hour, had yielded “new ideas in terms of formats, meetings, and… timing on how to bring a real peace closer”.He added later that he would hold another meeting with President Donald Trump “in the near future”.

Earlier this week Zelensky gave details of an updated 20-point peace plan, agreed by US and Ukrainian envoys in Florida.

The Kremlin said it was analysing proposals brought back from the US by a Russian envoy.

Trump and his envoys have been holding talks with both Ukraine and Russia in an effort to reach a deal to end the war which was started by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

There appears to have been some progress in recent days with Ukraine’s president praising the “good ideas” put forward by Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Kushner.

Zelensky said it had been an “active day” for his country’s diplomacy, as he went into details with the US envoys.

He conceded that there was still “work to be done on sensitive issues” but added that “together with the American team, we understand how to put all of this in place”.

Zelensky added that Ukraine’s top negotiator Rustem Umerov, the country’s top security official, “will continue discussions with the American team”.

The 20-point peace plan agreed by the US and Ukraine is seen as an update to the initial draft prepared by Witkoff several weeks ago.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan Zonal Station

That draft was widely seen as heavily geared towards Russia’s maximalist pre-invasion demands, which Kyiv and its European allies said would mean the de facto capitulation of Ukraine.

Describing the updated proposal on Wednesday, Zelensky had said it offered Russia the potential withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the east and the creation of a demilitarised zone in their place.

He said the plan now included security guarantees from the US, Nato and Europeans for a co-ordinated military response if Russia invaded Ukraine again.

On the key question of Ukraine’s industrial eastern Donetsk region, Zelensky said a “free economic zone” was a potential option. Any area that Ukrainian troops pulled out of would have to be policed by Ukraine, he stressed.

Moscow currently controls about 75% of the Donetsk region, and some 99% of the neighbouring Luhansk. They are collectively known as Donbas.

Zelensky has been under heavy pressure from Trump to cede all of Donbas to Russia during ongoing Washington-led peace negotiations.

The Ukrainian leader has so far rejected any territorial concessions, and instead demanded iron-clad security guarantees for Ukraine in any potential settlement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned that Ukrainian troops must leave Donbas or Russia will seize it.

On Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was studying the proposals brought back from the US by the Russian envoy, Kirill Dmitriev.

“We are examining this material, and depending on the decisions made by the head of state, we will continue our communication with the Americans,” he said.

While diplomatic efforts to end the conflict inch forward, fighting continues on the ground.

The Ukrainian military said on Thursday that it had struck one of Russia’s key oil refineries in the southern region of Rostov with cruise missiles.

The Novoshakhtinsk refinery near the Ukrainian border is critical for supplying fuel for Russian military operations in occupied eastern Ukraine.

The Russian defence ministry said its forces had taken control of the settlement of Sviato-Pokrovske in the Donetsk region.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian troops withdrew from the embattled eastern town of Siversk.

The capture of the town brings Russia closer to the last remaining “fortress belt” cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk still in Ukrainian hands in the Donetsk region.

Religion

By Olaitan Oye-Adeitan

Perhaps, if people had known He carried their destiny on His shoulders, they would have sought a comfortable place for His birth.

One person may have even relinquished his own space.

But, they didn’t give Him a second glance, nor consider the welfare of a woman in labour.

Not even the cries of a sweet, little newborn could stir their sympathy. Instead, it was the farm animals that welcomed Him, providing warmth for Him in His most vulnerable moment, (Luke 2;7).

So it was, with the birth of Jesus Christ.

And when the news broke, God appointed the Shepherds as the first recipients of the good tidings.

Come to think of it, could it have been because baby Jesus only found accommodation at His birth, among the animals?

Though, his  arrival was humble , unassuming and  unheralded, yet within Him resided a glory that defied human comprehension.

It is a powerful reflection on the contrast between the ordinary circumstances of His birth and the extraordinary nature of who He is, The King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Little wonder,  the throne trembled when the news of Jesus’ birth reached the ears of a reigning king, Herod, (Matthew 2:3).

One may wonder, why would a reigning king become jittery by the birth of a baby prophesied to be king? One might expect him to think the child had years of growth ahead, and that by the time He would ascended the throne, Herod would have long since passed on or be well into old age.

But Herod’s unease ran deeper, revealing that his concern wasn’t just about Jesus, but about the ‘STAR’ in Jesus, which is the purpose He was destined to fulfill.

The Wise men saw the STAR, they were glad and went to worship Him, Matthew (2:2), but Herod heard about the STAR and was threatened.

Just as Jesus’ birth threatened Herod but brought joy to the shepherds, your destiny can evoke similar reactions, sparking opposition in some, and inspiring others to support and celebrate you just like the wise men went to worship Him.

Another striking thing about the birth of Jesus was the choice of Bethlehem, a little town of no recognition as the place of His birth, just as God chose the Shepherds as the first hearers of the great news.

This goes to reveal the mystery of God’s sovereignty over all in line with the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 “But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

That no flesh should glory in his presence”.

Therefore, know that your lowly state does not define you but God and He will certainly bring about a glorious image of you from that state of obscurity.

And remember, there was no place for Mary in the inn but she got a place to deliver her baby in the manger.

This tells you that, regardless of the  circumstance, God’s agenda can never be hindered. He will use whatever vessel He determines to use for His purpose to be achieved, ” Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men”. I Cor 1:25.

He is The God that uses ordinary things to achieve the extraordinary.

A lesson we cannot gloss over is human attitude towards one another. If Mary, the mother of Jesus were to be a person of high social standing, even the inn keeper would have looked for a room for her but because she wasn’t garbed in the apparel,  unknown to them, she carried a Glory meant for the world.

This is stark caution that we must be mindful of how we treat others and see beyond the physical appearance for many blessings may come in the most unattractive wrapper.

Today,b Jesus Christ is no longer a baby, but The Saviour of the world, the very reason for His birth.

As you celebrate Christmas, Will you prepare a room for Jesus in your life?

Merry Christmas!
