Five out of the Governorship Aspirants under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Oyo State, have called on the National Working Committee of the party to conduct a thorough review of the House of Representatives primary election conducted over the weekend.

The Aspirants, who include a Former Deputy Governor of the State, Mr Rauf Olaniyan, Mr Hakeem Alao, Prince Musbau Asanike, Mr Akeem Agbaje and Dr Usman Bakare, made the call at a news conference held at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

Reading a communique on behalf of the aspirants, Mr Hakeem Alao lamented that the manner the party’s primaries have been conducted so far in the state was not in line with the APC’s constitution and the Electoral act.

Mr Alao urged the National Leadership of the party to urgently intervene and address all grievances arising from the exercise.

“The manner in which these primaries were conducted is antithetical to the spirit of the Electoral Act and the APC Constitution. These instruments enshrine fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity for all aspirants. Imposition and intimidation cannot substitute for democratic participation.”

Also speaking, the Former Deputy Governor, Mr Rauf Olaniyan maintained that the underlisted aspirants were not against consensus or any other arrangements, but all stakeholders and members should be carried along to ensure fairness.

“We affirm that we are not opposed to transparent consensus primary. On the contrary, consensus remains our preferred option because it provides the most credible path for the emergence of the best candidate. It is a mechanism that reflects the collective will of party members when properly conducted. Whatever Asiwaju Bola Tinubu says is binding as National leader. As loyal members of the APC, we hold that the voice of our leader and President is final in matters of party direction. Whoever he picks, after due consultation and consideration with leaders and stakeholders across the state, will be our resolve. We will abide by it without reservation.”

Mr Olaniyan appealed to President Bola Tinubu to direct the APC leadership in the state to uphold democratic principles and ensure a level playing ground for all aspirants.

“We urge Mr. President, as the national leader of our party, to compel the National leadership and the Oyo State APC leadership to conduct free, fair and credible primaries in line with his well-known democratic credentials.”

Mr Olaniyan added that the priority of the 5 aspirants was the overall success of the party in the state and reaffirmed their commitment to the APC and its ideals.

The apex leadership of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) in Oyo State has endorsed Senator Sharafadeen Alli as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election, signaling a major step toward early political alignment within the party.

The endorsement was ratified during a high-level leadership summit held in Samonda, Ibadan, where prominent party stakeholders across the state converged to deliberate on the party’s future and electoral strategy ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking at the gathering, Senator (Chief) Hamzat Ayo Adeseun explained that the meeting was convened primarily to affirm Senator Alli’s candidacy and build consensus among party leaders.
According to him, the decision followed extensive consultations and was further strengthened by the position of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Adeseun revealed that he had previously met with the President in Abuja, where Tinubu reportedly provided strong justification for backing Alli as the party’s standard-bearer in Oyo State. He emphasized that, as the national leader of the APC, the President’s preference carries significant weight and should be respected by party members.

“Mr. President remains the leader of our party, and his opinion on who flies the party’s flag must be given due consideration,” Adeseun stated, noting that Alli had already declared his intention to contest the governorship seat prior to the endorsement.

In a similar vein, Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, Director of the South West Development Commission, reaffirmed the position of the party leadership. He said that he also held discussions with President Tinubu, who, according to him, endorsed Alli as the preferred candidate for the 2027 election in Oyo State.

Ibikunle called on other aspirants within the APC to align with the consensus’ decision in the interest of party unity and electoral success. He stressed that internal cohesion would be critical for the APC to mount a formidable challenge in the forthcoming governorship race.

The summit witnessed a large turnout of party leaders, stakeholders, and representatives from all geopolitical zones of Oyo State, underscoring the significance of the endorsement.

In his appreciation, Senator Alli thanked the leaders and other members of the party, for the show of support and however promised that he shall not hesitate to give governance of inclusiveness

With this development, the APC in Oyo State appears to be consolidating its ranks early, positioning Senator Alli as the focal point of its 2027 governorship ambition while aiming to avoid internal divisions that have affected past electoral outcomes.

Legislature

By Omolara Adasofunjo

All twenty-six members of the Ogun State House of Assembly have become a one-party legislature, following the defection of six lawmakers elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The defecting lawmakers, led by the Minority Leader, Mr Lukman Adeleye, representing Odogbolu State Constituency, formally submitted their letters of defection during plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Those who defected include Mr Dickson Awolaja, Remo North; Mr Lawal Samsudeen, Ogun Waterside; Mr Waliu Owode, Ijebu East; Mr  Oluseun Adesanya, Ijebu North East; and Mr Damilare Bello, Sagamu I.

The Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, read their letters on the floor of the House.

The lawmakers attributed their defection to the lingering internal crisis within the PDP, which they said had hindered effective political engagement.

They added that their decision was also informed by the need to align with a more progressive platform to deliver democratic dividends to their constituents.

In another development, the Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, had invited nominees for the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, whose names were forwarded to the Assembly by the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for screening at a later date.

By Olaolu Fawole

Nigeria’s political carpet is moving again.

Ahead of the 2027 elections, the flow of politicians into the All Progressives Congress has been steady and, at times, dramatic.

Governors, serving lawmakers and all categories of politicians have defected to the ruling party.

Some with fanfare, others with quiet paperwork.

The APC has publicly celebrated controlling 31 of the nation’s 36 state governments.

The names behind that number tell the fuller story.

Between April and December, 2025, governors of Delta, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Bayelsa and Rivers States left the PDP for the APC.

In January 2026, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf moved from the NNPP to the APC, bringing lawmakers and local government chairmen with him.

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri arrived in February in what analysts described as a wholesale political transplant.

Most recently, Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, who had strongly rejected calls to defect in June 2025, completed his crossing in March 2026.

In the National Assembly, the arithmetic has shifted.

The APC has more serving lawmakers than any other party, while, nine senators defected to the African Democratic Congress in March 2026 in one of the most significant counter movements in recent legislative history.

The case for defections

Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of association. That right does not expire upon election. A politician who finds their party ideologically unrecognisable, or structurally dysfunctional has a legitimate basis to seek a better platform.

There are historical cases where defection served the public interest.

The 2015 merger that produced the APC itself was a product of political realignment , opposition figures leaving comfort zones to build a coalition strong enough to end sixteen years of PDP federal dominance.

The result was Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power between political parties since 1999.

At the state level, some defections have enabled governance continuity, resolved dangerous internal party standoffs, and produced more stable legislative majorities.

A governor who has defected to align with the federal government’s party can, in theory, unlock better access to federal infrastructure, allocations, and political goodwill.

The outcomes, if delivered, would benefit the people of the state, regardless of the party flag under which they arrive. There is also an argument, uncomfortable but not without merit, that defections expose rather than create weakness.

A party that loses ten governors in twelve months did not simply suffer betrayal. It suffered a confidence crisis it could not survive.

The structural rot was already there. The defections made it visible.

The case against

The problem with Nigeria’s defection wave is not that it happens. It is the pattern, the timing, and the absence of principle.

When governors and lawmakers move in large numbers toward the ruling party before an election, the motivation is rarely ideological. It is existential.

Power in Nigeria concentrates around whoever controls federal patronage, INEC’s operating environment, and security infrastructure during elections.

Moving toward that power is not governance strategy, it is survival mathematics.

And survival mathematics, practised at scale, is a weapon.

What is unfolding ahead of 2027 is not merely a series of individual political decisions. It is a systematic weakening of the opposition, a deliberate erosion of the structures that give voters a credible alternative to the party in power.

When a political party is experiencing defection, it loses campaign infrastructure, state-level funding networks, and the local mobilisation machinery that turns voters into results.

When the NNPP loses Kano State, its crown jewel, it loses its most persuasive argument for national relevance.

The Labour Party, still rebuilding from the judicial disappointment of 2023, watches its potential coalition partners disappear one by one into the ruling party’s embrace.

From the APC’s perspective, this is legitimate political strategy. Brutal, but legal. Weaken what you cannot defeat outright, and arrive at the election with the field already narrowed.

From the electorate’s perspective, it is something else. Democracy does not merely require elections. It requires choices. When opposition parties are hollowed out by coordinated defection before a single vote is cast, the ballot becomes a formality rather than a verdict.

The voter pays a further price at the constitutional level.

The 1999 Constitution requires legislators who defect to vacate their seats, except in cases of party crisis or merger, but courts have repeatedly accepted elastic definitions of “party crisis,” allowing defectors to keep their positions.

For executive officeholders, the law says almost nothing at all.

A governor can defect the morning after his inauguration and face no legal consequence.

The result is a political culture where party platforms are decorative.

Where voters choose a candidate knowing the candidate may not stay chosen.

The Electoral Act does not adequately address this. Its defection related provisions are narrow, focused on candidacy rather than post election conduct.

Recent House of Representatives amendments to criminalise dual party membership, carrying a fine of N10 million, imprisonment of up to two years, or both are a partial response, but they do not touch executive defections, and enforcement remains an open question.

A democracy with one dominant party, a weakened opposition, and no meaningful legal deterrent against electoral mandate transfers is not a competitive democracy. It is a managed one.

The right to political association is real and must be protected. Also, is the voter’s right to a representative who stays representing them, and to an election that still has something worth deciding when polling day finally arrives.

Defections may reshape the field, but they do not own the result. That still belongs to the people.

Former deputy governor, Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo, has formally assumed office as the Chairman of the Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the inauguration of a new set of State Executive Committee.

The members are expected to manage the affairs of the Party for the next four years.

The event which took place at the Oke-Ado Ibadan State Secretariat climaxed the congresses of the Party in the state for 2026.

The South West Zonal Legal Adviser of the APC, Barrister Kolawole Majaro, administered oath of office on Adeyemo and thirty-five others who had emerged through consensus at the March 3, 2026 State Congress which was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan under the supervision of Amos Gombi-led Committee deployed to the state from the APC National Secretariat, Abuja.

In his acceptance speech, Adeyemo described his emergence as the new chairman of the APC in the state as another call to service.

“This new State Executive Committee under my leadership is being put in place to add value and strengthen our great Party in view of the challenges ahead of us. I cannot but appreciate all the leaders of the party from within and outside the state for their role in making the recently concluded congresses hitch-free and successful. Special kudos also goes to Alh. Fatai Ibikunle, Hon. Afeez Bolaji Repete and other members of the Local Organizing Committee which facilitated the feat recorded.

“We have used the opportunity of the congresses to showcase our collective commitment to unity and harmony as progressives and democrats. It is a new dawn in Oyo APC and I am optimistic that the current atmosphere of peace and togetherness will be sustained before, during and after the next party primaries as we keep our eyes on the goals of securing 90 per cent votes for President Bola Tinubu and reclaiming Agodi Government House in 2027.

“President Tinubu is, no doubt, performing beyond our expectations and the best way to appreciate his good work is to retain him in Aso Villa until 2031. Against all odds, the president is pursuing his Renewed Hope Agenda with vigour and passion while the positive results are being felt in all the sectors of the economy as well as our national life. Therefore, it is imperative we give him the chance of a second term in office so that he can consolidate on his numerous achievements so far.” Adeyemo stated.

Other members of the executive committee who were inaugurated alongside Adeyemo included; Dr. Taofeek Lamidi (Deputy Chairman), Hon. Fatai Adesina (State Secretary), Dr. Adekemi Opatunde (Woman Leader), Olawale Sadare (Publicity Secretary), Olalekan Oladejo (Youth Leader), Remi Adepoju (Organizing Secretary), Ajiboye Akinsanya (Treasurer), Sunday Aborisade (Legal Adviser), Alhaja Tinuade Adigun (Auditor), Lukman Owonikoko (Asst. The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Prince Adewale Egbedun, has dismissed allegations by the All Progressives Congress, APC, that the legislature undermined local government autonomy with the passage of the Local Government Amendment No. 2 Bill, 2026.

Prince Egbedun, in a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Olamide Tiamiyu, described the APC’s claims as unfounded and driven by desperation.

He maintained that the recent ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria does not invalidate the constitutional authority of state legislatures over local government administration.

“The Supreme Court judgement does not erase Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution. That section expressly empowers state Houses of Assembly to make laws for the proper administration of local governments. Autonomy does not translate into absence of legislative oversight,” the statement said.

Prince Egbedun explained that the amendment seeks to promote transparency and prevent administrative lapses in the management of public funds at the grassroots, not to take over local government finances.

“We have the mandate of the people of Osun State to legislate. That responsibility cannot and will not be surrendered because of partisan pressure. Our duty is to ensure peace, order and good governance, including strengthening accountability mechanisms where necessary,” he said.

The Speaker described the APC’s condemnation of the bill as premature, adding that the opposition failed to examine the provisions of the amendment before issuing its statement.

He urged the party to exercise restraint, study the contents of the law thoroughly and seek clarification from the House where necessary, rather than resort to public speculation.

The APC had earlier accused the Assembly of attempting to undermine a recent Supreme Court judgement granting autonomy to local governments.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called for the immediate release of over ₦130 billion in statutory allocations allegedly withheld from the state’s local governments, describing the situation as a major threat to grassroots governance and the welfare of workers and residents.

The governor, who made the demand in a state broadcast, condemned the illegal occupation of local government secretariats across the state by court-sacked chairmen and councillors of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Governor Adeleke said the occupation has persisted for almost a year despite a clear judgment of the Federal High Court, Osogbo, delivered in November 2022, and subsequent affirmations by the Court of Appeal in February and June 2025, which nullified the elections that produced the officials.

He accused the former governor of the state, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, of allegedly backing the continued occupation of the council secretariats with the support of the police, warning that such actions undermine democracy and the rule of law.

The governor further alleged that local government workers attempting to resume duty had been harassed and intimidated by armed police officers and political thugs, creating an atmosphere of fear and disruption at the grassroots level.

‎He pointed out that the withheld funds are critical for the payment of salaries and entitlements of primary school teachers, nurses, health workers in the state’s 332 primary health care centres, local government staff, traditional councils, and retirees.

‎The governor said the state government has had to make painful sacrifices to sustain salary payments for almost 12 months, a situation he described as unsustainable.

‎Appealing for federal intervention, he called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure the immediate release of the withheld funds and to protect democratic institutions at the local government level.

‎He maintained that the president was not involved in the alleged illegality and urged him to intervene in the interest of constitutional order.

‎While calling on Nigerians and pro-democracy groups to speak out against the continued occupation of local government secretariats and to demand the release of council funds, Governor Adeleke urged residents of the state to remain peaceful and law-abiding, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to upholding the constitution and safeguarding the welfare of the people.

The All Progressives Congress in the South West geo-political zone has called on governors and other leaders from the zone to march word with actions and ensure that all the developmental ideas and road maps generated from the recent regional summit are carefully worked out and Implemented for the benefit of all the six states in the zone.

A non-governmental organisation known as Development Agenda for the Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission) had last week organised a two-day South West Stakeholders’ Dialogue/Summit in Akure, Ondo state in collaboration with Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) and the governments of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo states.

Participants at the summit included governors, lawmakers, federal government appointees, traditional rulers, former political office holders, captains of industry, interest groups among other stakeholders from the zone.

In a statement issued on Thursday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ayobami Afolabi, APC lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts which have resulted in all the nation’s six geopolitical zones having their own development commissions which are being positioned to facilitate speedy growth and development to all the geographical components of the country.

“The quality of representation and deliberations at the recently concluded Akure summit was a pointer to the fact that the good people of the South West are ready again to reinvent the zeal, courage and bravery with which the affairs of the defunct Western Region was piloted by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and other legendary personalities who mobilized little resources to generate unique ideas and actions which placed the Region at the forefront of good governance and enviable leadership.

“The idea of geopolitical zone development commissions is a subtle way of acceding to the popular demand for true federalism as all the each zones are being given a veritable platform for partnership, collectivism and unity of purpose. The organisers of the Akure Summit also deserve applause as they were able to make the dialogue devoid of politics or sentiments as people from all divides were involved.

“At the end of the dialogue, the whole world was made to see that sons and daughters of Yorubaland were mindful of the shared values, opportunities and prospects which could turn their land into an eldorado in no time. However, the major challenge now is for the concerned individuals, groups and authorities to speed up action and ensure that the gains of the Summit are translated into unprecedented holistic development for the South West geo-politcal zone.” Afolabi added.
