The Deputy Head of Mission at the British High Commission, Simon Field, recently visited world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua in the hospital following a deadly road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

A statement issued by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Governor of Ogun State, on Monday, revealed that Field met with Joshua during his hospital visit.

He also engaged in discussions with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. British officials are closely monitoring the ongoing situation surrounding the tragic incident.

“The British High Commission was formally notified of the accident. Officials of the Mission are monitoring developments and remain in contact with the hospital and the Ogun State Government.

The Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Simon Field, visited the hospital and met with Anthony Joshua and the two governors. The families of the deceased have also been contacted through the High Commission,” the statement read.

The accident, which took place around midday on Monday, involved a Toyota Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua and three other passengers.

The statement confirmed that two of the vehicle’s occupants lost their lives in the crash. They were identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen.

In the aftermath of the crash, Governor Dapo Abiodun visited the Lagos hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment and was later joined by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Both governors are said to have stayed at the hospital for several hours to closely monitor the situation and ensure that the boxer received the necessary medical care.

Commenting on the incident, Governor Abiodun stated that he rushed to the hospital as soon as he was informed about the accident and personally oversaw Joshua’s treatment, alongside Governor Sanwo-Olu.

“As soon as I was informed, I headed straight to the hospital and was later joined by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. We both took charge of the situation, oversaw Anthony Joshua’s care, and remained at the hospital for over seven hours,” the governor said.

Other senior officials who visited the hospital included the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade.

The Ogun State Government reassured the public that Joshua was in stable condition and receiving the necessary medical care. It also expressed satisfaction with the quality of care provided by the medical team.

“We are comfortable with the doctors and the quality of care at the hospital, and we appreciate the medical team for their professionalism,” Abiodun said.

President Bola Tinubu was also informed about the accident.

According to the state government, the President held separate conversations with Anthony Joshua, his mother, and Governor Abiodun, during which he expressed his heartfelt sympathies and condolences.

Governor Abiodun shared the President’s words, saying, “This immense tragedy has cast a deep shadow over this season. These are very difficult moments, and we must stand firm, united, and support one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.”

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with the Ogun State Government assuring the public that details will be released once the probe is completed.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Radio Nigeria Ibadan Zonal Station

The government also assured that updates regarding Joshua’s condition and other developments related to the incident will be communicated to the public as necessary.

The South-West Governors’ Forum has urged the Federal Government to urgently establish state police, saying rising insecurity across the country makes the move necessary.

The call was contained in a communiqué read by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after the Forum’s meeting hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan.

The governors—representing Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo and Osun (via the deputy governor)—said state police would strengthen security both in the region and nationwide.

They also announced the creation of a joint security intelligence-sharing and communication system, including a live digital platform to exchange threat alerts, log incidents, and coordinate responses.

The Forum reviewed recent security breaches and set up a South-West Security Trust Fund under the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria DAWN Commission, to be managed by the Special Advisers on Security from the six states.

The governors commended President Bola Tinubu for ongoing security reforms and the swift rescue of abducted victims in Kwara and Niger States.

They called for immediate Federal Government surveillance of forests across the region, noting that criminal groups increasingly use them as hideouts.

They also appealed to the President to deploy forest guards to South-West states while state governments provide personnel.

The communiqué noted concerns about unregulated interstate migration and announced plans for stricter border monitoring, improved data collection and collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, for proper identification.

The governors also raised alarm over illegal mining, calling for a stronger licensing and enforcement framework to curb environmental and security risks.

Reaffirming their support for state police, they said “the time is now,” adding that the region remains committed to reclaiming forests, enhancing food security, and promoting peace.

President Bola Tinubu has commissioned the Lagos Red Line rail.

In his address at the event, President Tinubu shared insights into the transformative vision for Lagos.

“My team and I toiled day and night to craft and implement a developmental vision that will transform Lagos into the economic powerhouse of Africa and a respected mega city on the global stage. We are realising that dream”.

“It is not a crime to dream big. Just stay focused and stay on course, particularly, make development the central fulcrum, he said.”

Speaking at the launch, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized that the project aimed not only to enhance transit but also to reshape the urban landscape, setting a new pace for development.

“The LMRT project is a beacon of progress, illuminating the path to a future where our city moves smoother, faster, and more efficiently,” he explained.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, when fully operational, the Lagos Red Line Mass Transit rail system will convey about 500,000 passengers daily.

“The LRMT Red Line rail system, the first phase of which we project will move more than 500,000 passengers daily, stretches over a distance of 27 kilometres from Agbado to Oyingbo, with eight stations at Agbado, Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, Yaba, and terminates at Oyingbo,” Sanwo-Olu explained.

The governor noted that the LMRT Red Line “isn’t just about improving our city’s mobility; it’s about reshaping our urban landscape and setting a new pace for development.

“By connecting critical points across Lagos, we’re opening doors to opportunities, growth, and a sustainable future.”

Among the distinguished guests at the commissioning were Governors Usman Ododo (Kogi), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and other notable dignitaries.

Here are eight facts to know about the Lagos Mass Transit train:

* The first phase of the LRMT project is expected to facilitate 37 trips daily and move more than 500,000 passengers daily.

* The rail stretches over a distance of 27 kilometres.

* There are eight stations from Agbado in Ogun State to Lagos State – Iju, Agege, Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, before terminating at Oyingbo.

* 10 vehicular overpasses and pedestrian bridges, separating train traffic from vehicular and pedestrian flows have been constructed. This will help to ensure the smooth operation of the rail line and safety for commuters.

* The LMRT project is headed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, under the state’s Ministry of Transportation.

* The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, minimise road accidents, and improve commuter safety within Lagos.

* The Red Line will utilise a diesel-powered system known as Diesel Multiple Unit which employs on-board diesel engines to propel multiple-unit trains.

* The Red Line project is a substantial investment in Lagos’ urban transportation infrastructure. Initial estimates pegged the cost at $135 million under the Greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project, managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and lawmaker representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Teslim Folarin has strongly condemned the attack on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s convoy by hoodlums.

Reports say the bus conveying the press crew of Lagos State Governor’s Office on Sunday was attacked by hoodlums between Ebute-Ero and Adeniji, Iga-Iduganran axis on Lagos Island, leaving no fewer than two journalists wounded.

Senator Folarin, in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday evening, described the attack as politically-motivated.

“The attack on the press crew of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s convoy is utterly condemnable. It’s a politically motivated and criminal act.”

“I urge the law enforcement agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book as it will serve as a deterrent to others”. Senator Folarin.

GOVERNOR BABAJIDE SANWO-OLU’S CORONAVIRUS PRESS STATEMENT – JULY 11, 2021

Fellow Lagosians,

It has become imperative to once again provide you an update on the Coronavirus pandemic situation in Lagos State, and our ongoing response as a State Government.

Starting around the end of March 2021, the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lagos State began to wind down, and we began to enjoy some reprieve from the worst effects of the virus.

This allowed us to further open-up the economy to allow the start of the journey towards full normalcy in our lives and the pursuit of livelihoods, after what has been a very difficult year.

Regrettably, in spite of the hard work and dedicated efforts towards sustaining the return to normalcy, over the last three months, we are now finding ourselves at what appears to be the start of a potential 3rd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Lagos State.

From the beginning of July, we started to experience a steep increase in the number of daily confirmed cases, with the test positivity rate going from 1.1% at the end of June 2021 to its current rate of 6.6% as at 8th of July 2021.

The rapid increase within a week gives great cause for concern. Also, within the last two weeks, the occupancy rate at our isolation centres increased from an average of 1% to 6%.

This is the new and disturbing reality that now confronts us.

But we must not be demoralized by this.

We must instead resolve that we will not leave any stone unturned in our bid to effectively mitigate the third wave of this pandemic in Lagos State.

As you all know, Lagos has been the epicentre of the pandemic since the start, and the way we manage it here has a significant impact and reverberating effect on the national outlook and outcomes.

So, Nigeria is counting on us in Lagos State to be resolute in our stand against the virus.

We will continue to test aggressively. We will also focus on sequencing the samples we are collecting to ensure we are detecting and keeping track of the different variants in circulation.

It is only by testing and sequencing comprehensively that we can collect the data required for informed decision-making.

Epidemiology Update

As at the 7th of July 2021, Lagos State had recorded a total of 60,202 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of this number, 55,135 have recovered in-community and 770 are currently being managed actively in-community.

Over the course of managing the COVID-19 pandemic, about 4,382 patients have been admitted into our various COVID-19 care centres in Lagos: with 357 registered fatalities.

In all we have tested 563,679 samples in Lagos State since the pandemic started. Today we have 30 accredited testing centers: 26 private and 4 public health laboratories in the state, a significant improvement in capacity over the course of the past year.

Accredited Health Facilities

Let me make it clear that outside of the health facilities accredited for the management and treatment of COVID-19, and the EKOTELEMED program, no other health facilities, whether public or private, are permitted to admit or attend to COVID-19 patients.

The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) is providing monitoring and surveillance and has been mandated to apply heavy fines and other punitive measures on all facilities found to be in violation of this.

Lagosians should desist from patronizing non-accredited COVID-19 treatment centers, and proprietors should also ensure that all suspected and confirmed cases are referred appropriately.

Vaccine Distribution and Access

One of the major tenets of our mitigation strategy against the 3rd wave is our vaccination campaign, similar to other parts of the world.

It has been observed by various credible studies that those that have received their vaccines have demonstrated significant resistance to the effects of the virus, with fewer associated complications and deaths.

As of today, however, the percentage of residents of Lagos who have received two (2) doses of the vaccine stands at a mere 1%.

We recognise that this is not adequate, and given the imminent third wave, and our priority to reduce COVID-19 related deaths, we are exploring all avenues possible to ramp up access to vaccination so as to reach our herd immunity target of at least 60% COVID-19 vaccination coverage of the population of Lagos State.

We are confident that we will be getting a second batch of vaccines very soon, to kick-start the second phase of vaccinations.

Travel Protocols for in-Bound Passengers
Between 8th May 2021 and 7th July 2021, a total of 50,322 passengers of interest arrived in Lagos via the Murtala Mohammed Airport.

Of the 50,322 passengers, 18 percent could not be reached by EKOTELEMED because of the provision of either wrong numbers or wrong Nigerian contact details to be reached on.

It is the responsibility of passengers to ensure they provide the right details for us to reach them for proper monitoring.

Going forward, passengers that do not provide the right details, including a phone number they can be reached for monitoring and an address for isolation, will face serious sanctions including fines and imprisonment according to our Lagos State Coronavirus Law of 2021.

Sanctions Against Quarantine Defaulters

As dictated by the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 (PSC), passengers from red-listed countries (India, South Africa, Brazil and Turkey) are required to observe mandatory isolation.

So far, we have successfully isolated 2,386 passengers in Lagos State.

Of this number, 15% have absconded.

The following sanctions are being recommended and have already been meted out to defaulters:
● For Foreigners: Revocation of their Permanent Residency, and deportation; and
● For Nigerians: Prosecution to the full extent of the Lagos State COVID-19 Law.

Religious Activities

Greater vigilance is required at this time in our Churches and Mosques and other places of religious worship.

Even as we are pleased that religious houses are now open for worship, after the lengthy closures of 2020, we must not allow ourselves to be carried away by the illusion that all is now back to normal.

This is especially critical, as Sallah approaches, in a little over a week from now.

The festivities will no doubt bring people together in large numbers and create conditions that can sadly cause the spread of the Coronavirus.

We must not allow this to happen.

For this reason, we are mandating full compliance with all protective protocols.

Compulsory use of masks in all public places, Social distancing, Temperature checks, Provisions for hand-washing and sanitizers, and a maximum of 50 percent occupancy in enclosed spaces.

Resisting Pandemic Fatigue

Whilst both the Federal and State Governments have a huge role to play in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, the responsibility of managing the third wave ultimately belongs to all of us.

Without the cooperation of the public at large, we stand the risks of losing both lives and livelihood, on a devastating scale.

Therefore, I would like to once again reiterate that this is not the time to get tired or complacent.

Instead, we must be re-energized to battle this invisible and seemingly relentless enemy.

After almost 18 months of daily confronting this virus, it is understandable that many are tired and want their old, pre-pandemic lives to return.

Unfortunately, we do not have a choice in this regard, and fatigue is not an option.

We cannot afford to be tired, frustrated or distracted.

The enemy is formidable and opportunistic, it will only go as far as we allow it.

Having triumphed over the first and second waves of the pandemic, we must now find within ourselves new reserves of energy to quell this emerging third wave before it snowballs out of control.

Let me assure us all that victory over COVID-19 is much closer today than at any other point in our recent history.

But we must persevere to see this victory.
We must maintain our vigilance even as we ramp up the vaccination coverage.

At this point, I would like to thank all the members of the Incident Command Structure for their resilience in the management of this never-ending pandemic, and also the Federal Government, through the Presidential Steering Committee, for all their support and collaboration.

Lagos State will continue to work with all our partners, across government and the private sector, to ensure that we permanently triumph over this virus.

We will not rest until this is achieved.

News Analysis

One major feature of the present democratic system in Nigeria is the approval of a generous pension package for former governors and their deputies.

Apart from working their way up, while still in office to become senators or ministers, these governors either persuade or compel their state Houses of Assembly to come up with legislations that make them enjoy pension for life.

For instance, in Lagos State which was the first to implement the law signed by former Governor Bola Tinubu in 2007, the legislation provides a lot of comfort and convenience for their ex-governors and their deputies.

A breakdown of the legislation shows that former governors in the state are entitled to a house each in preferred locations in Lagos and Abuja.

The law provides for six new cars every three years, one hundred percent of the basic salary of the incumbent governor, and free healthcare for the beneficiary and his family members.

Former governors in Lagos State are also entitled to furniture allowance, three hundred percent of annual basic salary, house maintenance allowance, ten percent of annual basic salary utility allowance, twenty percent of annual basic salary, car maintenance allowance and thirty percent of the annual basic salary.

There is also an entertainment allowance which is ten percent of the annual basic salary and a personal assistant who will earn twenty-five percent of the governor’s annual basic salary.

But in a surprise move, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced his intention to set in motion necessary machinery for the repeal of the ex-governors’ pension law.

Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that amid rising poverty, youth unemployment, inability of most states to pay the thirty thousand naira minimum wage, poor roads infrastructure, underdevelopment of rural areas, it would not speak well to ask fellow citizens to brace up for harsh economic realities, and yet allow a segment of the society live in affluence.

Lagos State is not alone in this gesture though, Zamfara and Imo States have repealed the governors’ pension package.

The Pension Reform Act of 2004 changed the Nigerian Pension System from defined benefits to defined contributions which means that private and public sector workers can only be entitled to a pension from the funds they contributed while in active pensionable work.

Since the salaries of the governors and their deputies are not subject to pension deductions, their pension is a different ball game, which can only be fixed by the revenue mobilization, allocation and fiscal commission but rather than have that, the states use taxpayers’ money to pay the illegal pension.

No doubt, the repeal will reduce the cost of governance and is expected to bring development to the various states.

With this, these governors have sent a message that those in public service can also make sacrifice.

Similar principle of self-restraint should also guide those in the private sector who have the powers, and use it to set huge benefits for themselves as such acts send the message to those below them to act recklessly.

Public service should be for those who have distinguished themselves in other endeavours, or for those who are capable of engaging in other works after a stint in public service.

It is pertinent that other state Houses of Assembly do the needful by abrogating this law once and for all, as what the country requires now are laws that will fast-track the overall development of the nation.

A one-hundred-and five-bed Mother and Child Care facility recently completed within the premises of Badagry General Hospital by the Lagos State Government will be inaugurated in September.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this during a tour of the hospital, also proposed an expansion of the Accident and Emergency Department, which he said would take off in the next nine month.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who was on a-six-hour tour of Badagry, one of the five traditional divisions of the state which has agriculture and fishing as its mainstay, went round the Avia-Igborosun Organic Farm, the proposed site for his administration’s pilot agriculture scheme “the Lagos Food Production Park”.

Declaring his intention to revive the 279-hectare organic Farm, acquired by the State Government in 2012 for commercial agricultural project, Governor Sanwo-Olu said that the state would engage the private sector to invest in the project and after completion would create thousands of direct jobs and improve the well being of Badagry residents.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the revival of the Badagry Organic Farm and creation of more food production parks across the state were part of the strategy designed to boost food security from 20 to 50 per cent, thereby ensuring food sufficiency.

He noted that the project would give rise to similar agro-allied businesses that would open up Badagry’s economy for more growth and boost its tourism business.

Some of the agricultural projects to be developed for commercial production in the Organic Farm include fishing, poultry, piggery and agro-forestry.

As part of the move to turn around the Organic Farm, Governor Sanwo-Olu promised a total rehabilitation of the road leading to the farm.
