Health

The Management of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso has frowned at a disturbing event which took place at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital on Sunday, September 25th.  A doctor of the hospital ( names withheld) was beaten black and blue by the security aides of one Mr. Femi Onireti, an upcoming politician in Oyo State.

The Management of the hospital, who decried the development said it was uncharitable for anyone to threaten or bully medical personnel in the line of duty.

This is contained in a statement by the PRO, Mr.Omotayo Ogunleye.

The statement says the management, which notes with dismay the unfriendly and thuggery attitude of Mr Onireti, maintains that such attitude was capable of putting the lives of medical staff in jeopardy.

” The Management, while warning and imploring the politician and other members of the community to desist from interfering in the protocol involving  patient management, maintained that Mr. Onireti must apologize to the hospital and the victim of their assault in the hospital.

While condemning the politician’s manner of interfering with the management of the patient which was brought to the hospital for medical attention, the Management noted that such act would not be tolerated.

According to the Management, “the politician was commanding the doctors to place his patient on oxygen and also instructed that he should be taken to the Intensive Care Unit”, noting that the doctors never gave such instruction.

“The politician, with the help of his assailants descended on a medical doctor, a staff of the hospital, thinking the doctor was filming their devilish displays at the A&E section of the hospital”, the management stated.

Owing to the assault by  Mr. Onireti and his aides, the doctors at the hospital have embarked on indefinite strike until an apology is tendered to the hospital and phones seized from the victim by the politician and his aides are returned.              The matter has been reported to the concerned police station by the victim for necessary action” The statement reads.

In a counter release, Olufemi Onireti responded with a statement tagged. Re: LAUTECH Hospital Management Decries Assault by Politician, Demands Apology

“Re: LAUTECH Hospital Management Decries Assault by Politician, Demands Apology

The attention of Hon. Olufemi Onireti, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been drawn to a press release by the management of the Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital(LTH), Ogbomoso that his aides were ordered to beat up medical doctor at the hospital black and blue.

Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have reacted to the press release because the patient which brought us to the hospital in the first instance eventually died and so we are in a mourning mood but we are reacting to the release in order to set the record straight so that the general public would be adequately informed of what actually transpired.

On Sunday morning, the 26th of September, Hon. Olufemi Onireti received a distress call from  the Vice-Chairman of Ogbomoso North Local Government, Hon. Adijat Aremu (Rainbow)  that the Osupa Ward PDP Chairman, Hon. Olatunde Iyanda a.k.a Bukky was in ill health.

Onireti quickly drove down to the clinic, where the said PDP chairman was initially taken to and seeing his restless condition, he decided the patient should be transferred to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital (LTH). He consequently went to arrange for an ambulance at the LTH to convey the patient. He was subsequently admitted to the Accident and Emergency unit.

In the afternoon while on his way back to Ibadan he felt compelled to check up on the patient, but on getting there, he found the patient in much discomfort particularly having difficulty breathing. Alarmed, Hon Onireti called the attention of the doctor on duty to his discovery and requested that he be placed on oxygen.

But there was no prompt response; obviously, the doctor on duty was overwhelmed with attending to other patients. So, Onireti, already agitated over the deteriorating condition of his patient, requested that he be put in the Private ICU so he could receive intensive care.

However, the doctor spurned this request saying their private ICU was not functioning and he advised the patient to be taken to the Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH).

The condition of Hon Onireti’s patient became critical throwing him and his entourage into real panic but to their utmost shock another person later called a doctor was sighted positioning his phone as if he was recording the unfolding activities! Why would a doctor be busy with a phone when another was stressed up! Moreover, it was an intrusion into the privacy of the patient (s).

In such a frenzy mood, one of the persons in his entourage dashed across to verify his mission, politicians couldn’t be too careful. Onireti was not even conscious of what was going on at that point, he was rather preoccupied with saving the life of the patient.

Surely, a ruckus erupted and was settled.

So, it is a rude shock to us to be confronted with the allegation that Femi Onireti beat up a doctor or that a doctor was beaten up on his order. That is preposterous. Certainly, the said doctor’s action was a professional breach and an infraction bordering on negligence of duty.

But that was not to say Onireti gave order for the attack on the doctor. He is too humane and urbane to engage in such infamy. This is someone that often takes humanitarian programmes to hospitals to relieve patients of financial burdens.

We note that the phone in question is already in his possession. For emphasis sake we reiterate that none of the doctors was beaten on the order of Onireti.

It is so sad that the patient later died yesterday morning and was buried earlier today.

When we should be considering litigation for negligence of duty on the part of the hospital leading to the demise of a PDP ward chairman, we are being harassed with allegations of assault. We are being told the whole hospital has downtooled because “Femi Onireti supervised the beating of a doctor,” thereby predisposing other patients to danger. Doesn’t that sound ludicrous? It sounds like blackmail with input from fifth columnists. We hold that the health of patients should be held more paramount than any (alleged) shortcoming of Onireti. He was at the verge of losing a dear party leader, emotion was high at the time and everybody was in panic mode. He can’t be held responsible for such an offense.

He holds the medical profession and its practitioners in a very high esteem. He couldn’t have wilfully engaged in what he was accused of.

However, for the sake of the patients in the reputable hospital, whose lives are dear to him, to them, to their people and in fact to the nation, we appeal to the striking workers to reconsider and go back to work. We will make a reconciliatory visit to the hospital.

Thank you.

Academic activities were in the early hours of yesterday disrupted at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso following the death of a 500 level Student of the Department of Animal Nutrition and Biotechnology, Asefon Nifemi Benard.

Nifemi was said to have climbed an electric pole to fix his hostel’s power and in the process of descending from the pole fell to a soak away.

Information has it that it took the students up to twenty minutes before he was evacuated from the soak away.

An audio recording being circulated via the social media quoted a lady saying: “Feranmi fell into soak-away after fixing power. We all rushed to assist him, we were calling him and he was responding begging us to help him. The soakaway was filled with feaces”

Some of the students, who said the victim was subsequently taken to general hospital alleged that hospital management insisted that the Dean of Students Affairs should be around before they would commence treatment.

The students also alleged that the hospital later disclosed that they were out of oxygen, a situation which compelled the students to move the victim to Bowen hospital but Nifemi died in the process.

The development however, prompted the students to go on rampage.

A professor of Architecture at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology ,Lautech, Ogbomoso, Micheal Atolagbe says  construction of buildings without consultation of experts contribute to the level of insecurity in Nigeria.

The don stated this while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Ogbomoso on the level of insecurity and the impact of climate change.

Professor Atolagbe said buildings arranged in orderly manner, in line with a designed lay out, basic amenities including water, electricity and good road network would be of advantage to dwellers.

On insecurity, the architecture expert said security operatives would only be prompt and effective during distress calls in areas with good lay out, noting that many houses were not numbered and may be difficult to locate in emergency situations.

“Once the environment is not organised, the security is not good. but when there is order, houses are planned along streets, water distributed according to lay out, electricity and road network distributed, where these are not organised in line with the buildings that spring up, there is chaos on the security, He said

Professor Atolagbe while speaking on effect of unplanned layout on climate change advocated adequate house spacing, accessing and appropriate landscaping to mitigate effects of climate change.

He expressed worry that many health challenges being faced were consequences of improper planning of houses, describing as worrisome, a situation where sunlight enters straight to the restroom thereby forcing dwellers to be avoiding sunlight even indoors.

Professor Atolagbe implored all and sundry to ensure they consulted experts on their building plans.
