Two people have been presumed dead while five persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in an accident that occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway around Mowe Bus Stop.

The accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus marked GMT641XL and a truck with registration number KSF320XX.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr Ahmed Umar said in a statement that twenty male adults were involved in the crash, out of which 5 persons sustained injured with 2 deaths recorded.

Mr Umar attributed the suspected causes of the fatal crash to excessive speeding and dangerous driving which led to the loss of control on the part of the bus which caused it to ram into the moving truck.

The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun cautioned motorists against excessive speed and dangerous driving, pointing out that there was a low rate of compliance to safe driving rules among commercial drivers.

Mr Umar commiserated with the family of the crash victims and advised them to contact Mowe Unit Command for details of the crash and reclaim the properties of the victims recovered from the scene of the crash

According to the FRSC Public Education Officer for Sector Commander, Florence Okpe, the injured victims had been taken to a private hospital in Mowe while the corpses of the dead have been handed over to their families.

Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, has called for the implementation of functional laws and regulations to curb the excesses of articulated vehicle drivers with a view to reducing road crashes in the state.

The Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, stated this during the lawmakers’ visit to the scene of a fire outbreak at the proposed new Kara Market site at Ogere corridor of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway. 

Mr. Oluomo pointed out the need to restrict the time articulated trucks ply all categories of roads in the state, while also enforcing effective monitoring of their activities by relevant safety agencies.

The speaker advised the drivers to desist from practices that could expose other road users to danger, pointing out that 9th Assembly was committed to partnering necessary stakeholders towards ensuring safety of all road users.

Earlier, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr Ahmed Umar had explained that the corps was collaborating with other relevant agencies to restore normalcy to the expressway.

The Federal Ministry of Works is collaborating with a multinational construction company and the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to check incessant road crashes and loss of lives along the Ososa Bridge axis of the Sagamu – Benin Expressway.

The tripartite agreement is aimed at providing palliative measures on the damaged section of the Bridges and ensuring effective control of traffic along the road corridor to end frequent cases of vehicles plunging into the river. 

Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Ahmed Umar told newsmen that a joint team of stakeholders, including the Federal Comptroller of Works in the state, Mr Bakare Umar and a representative of the road contractors had also carried out an assessment of the three faulty bridges. 

The FRSC Sector Commander who explained that the move was sequel to a recent crash that claimed four lives on the road explained that the measure was to reduce the risks of motorists’ falling off the bridge into the river.

The sector commander who pointed out that traffic had been temporarily diverted to ensure seamless palliative exercise advised the road users to exercise caution while approaching the Ososa bridges, adding that the FRSC traffic control operatives from had been deployed to control traffic at the scene. 

Addressing the representatives of the Construction Company, the Federal Comptroller of Works, Mr Umar directed the contactors to begin immediate palliative works on the faulty bridges. 

He highlighted the temporary interventions to include placement of movable concrete barriers at the edge of the bridges to create a better motoring environment and prevent vehicles from a free fall into the river in the event of crashes.

Three officers of the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, have been reportedly killed by thunder. 

Reports indicate that the officers were struck by thunder on the premises of their office at the Old Toll Gate area of Ilese town in Ijebu North East local government area of the state. 

Witnesses claimed that the FRSC personnel were preparing for their morning parade when disaster struck, pointing out that the sad occurrence had attracted worshippers of Sango, the acclaimed god of thunder to the scene. 

When contacted by Radio Nigeria, the Public Education Officer for the Command, Mrs Florence Okpe said the State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Ahmed Umar had proceeded to the scene to assess the situation. 

Mrs Okpe expressed optimism that the Sector Commander’s visit would enable the Command to provide accurate details of the unfortunate incident.

Also, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident described the death of the FRSC personnel as a great loss.

Mr Oyeyemi said the police headquarters had been briefed that 3 persons were killed by lightening at the FRSC office, Ilese, Ijebu.
