Ondo State Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, says, for “Host Communities” to be recognized by the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA and for them to be gazetted by National Boundary Commission, NBC, the government needs to intensify efforts to identify areas that fall within the category.

“This is to enable those communities to benefit from the 3% set aside for them by PIA Act”.

The Deputy Governor made this submission in Akure while receiving the delegation of NBC who paid an advocacy visit on the determination of “Host Communities Along the Gulf of Guinea”.

The NBC team was in the State to press home the need to work closely with Ondo State Boundary Commission to identify the communities recognized by the Acts as “Host Communities”.

According to him, Section 318 of the PIA, states- “a littoral community is a deep-water area of operation located along the Gulf of Guinea of the Nigerian shoreline up to about 500 meters inland, provided that such community is gazetted by the NBC”.

He said the primary objectives of gazetting the host communities are to foster sustainable prosperity, enhance harmonious co-existence between Licenses/Lesses and host communities, provide direct social and economic benefits and create a framework to support the development of identified and gazetted host Communities.

Aiyedatiwa applauded NBC for its advocacy. In his words, “your visit is a laudable idea and I want to assure you that for us in Ondo State, we will cooperate and collaborate with your Commission to ensure that all the Communities that fall within that region would benefit from the PIA, and non of these communities would be left out”.

He further stated that Ondo State Government would give all the necessary support to ensure that the exercise is successfully conducted.

In his Address  Director General National Boundary Commission, Surveyor Adamu Adaji represented by the Director of Internal Boundaries, Mr Nicholas Emiowele, appreciated the warm reception accorded them by the State Government, as well as the support the State has given to  NBC.

“We have partnered with you on some of the activities undertaken with respect to the common Interstate boundaries with your neighbours….we intend to make further progress on the emplacement of pillars on the required sector of the boundary”, he said.

Speaking further, Mr Emiowele said, “it is important that all the Communities within the specified 500m buffers from the coastline must be located and captured in the data bank of the Communities to be gazetted, for them to benefit adequately from the provisions of the Act.

“A previous survey had identified some of these communities, but it is imperative that the Commission, in conjunction with the Ondo State Boundary Commission, do a thorough compilation that can be defended.

The biblical admonition of visiting and feeding those in the prison came to the fore when the Nigerian Baptist Convention, NBC, visited Agodi Correctional Facility, Ibadan to feed all the inmates at the Centre.

The team led by the National President of the NBC, The Reverend Israel Àkànjí felicitated all the inmates and also gave them huge loaves of bread.

Reverend Akanji urged them to see the bread as a reminder of Jesus being the Bread of Life who could forgive them their sins and give them a new beginning.

He assured the inmates of God’s readiness to accept them as his sons and daughters once they depart from their old ways.

The cleric explained further that he chose to spend the day with the inmates to encourage them not to lose hope.

NBC President seized the occasion to call on governments to upgrade the facilities at the correctional centre which was built in 1894.

He, however, assured the inmates that the damaged roof of the chapel at the Centre would be reconstructed in September this year.

Welcoming the team, the Assistant Director at the Agodi Correctional Centre,  Mr Samuel  Ayodele, described the inmates as products of society through their background and peer pressure.

He stressed that people should stop stigmatizing ex-convicts but rather accept them back into society with love.

Mr Ayodele commended the Nigerian Baptist Convention for the initiative and urged other Nigerians to emulate such.

He added that the facility was in need of forty computer systems and a classroom within the premises for the take-off of a school to be managed by the Open University.

Radio Nigeria observed that the centre was well maintained while the inmates displayed some of their handwork including fans, bracelets, and necklaces for the people to buy.

The broadcast industry remains the most powerful tool for information dissemination.

Speaking on the review of media coverage of the 2019 general election at the two-day workshop organised by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, in Lagos, a Professor of Mass Communication, Stella Okunna, however, stated that it must be constantly monitored to prevent its abuse.

Professor Okunna remarked that from the report under review, the dissemination of fake news and hate speech would definitely instigate violence.

She explained that the internet was the most biased in the reportage of the 2019 election because it operated without rules and regulations under the guise of citizen journalism.

Also speaking at the event, a renowned mass communication teacher, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye said the major culprits of fake news in Nigeria were those that could best be described as information traffickers on the internet.

He explained that news trafficking is an age-long problem that could only be addressed through open government rather than through legislation.

The don enjoined broadcast regulators to be proactive by organizing similar workshops at the zonal levels to further sensitize people on the dangers of fake news, hate and dangerous speech.

Participants at the workshop included the Director-General, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Dr Mansur Liman and Zonal Director, FRCN Ibadan, Mrs Bolatito Joseph.

A media scholar, Professor Tony Iredia has advised the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, to give priority to professional broadcasters in its recruitment process.

This became imperative to improve its watchdog role in checkmating hate and dangerous speech in the broadcast industry.

Professor Iredia who reviewed the report on the escalation of hate and dangerous speech in the 2015 General Elections, affirmed that the report was not exhaustive as it focused only on the opposition and should be expanded to include ruling parties in future elections.

The don maintained that the NBC should henceforth penalise not only the medium of broadcast but the senders of hate and dangerous speech as it is a criminal offence.

Professor Iredia, a one-time Director-General of Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, identified partisanship and lack of autonomy as factors hindering NBC from carrying out its mandate effectively.
