NLC Women Committee Gets New Executive In Ogun

The national vice president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Alhaji Rafiu Adeniji has urged the newly elected executives of the women committee of the Nigeria Labour congress, NLC, Ogun state chapter to be magnanimous in victory and carry everybody along in their administration.

Alhaji Adeniji gave the advice in Abeokuta during the election of new officers for women wing of Ogun held at the Labour house, leme, Abeokuta.

Alhaji Adeniji stressed the need for women to work together as a team in order to fight for the women folks in the labour market for a better remuneration and welfare packages.

Also speaking, the state chairman of NLC, comrade Emmanuel Bankole gave assurance that the state leadership would continue to provide an enabling environment for women to participate in issues that affects their welfare and services.

At the end of the election, Comrade Omolara Olaiya was elected as state chairperson, comrade Christiana Emmanuel was elected as vice chairperson comrade Mariam Nurudeen emerged as secretary, while comrade Olasunbo Obilade was elected unopposed as assistant secretary.

Others are comrade Adenike Sumoji as ex officio one and comrade Mary Adeleke as ex officio two.

Minimum wage: we are on same page with workers – Ondo Assembly

The Ondo State House of Assembly has assured workers and leaders of the organized labour in the state that it would reject a bill seeking the removal of minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list of the nation’s constitution.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun gave the assurance in Akure while receiving a protest letter from the labour leaders to kick against the bill being sponsored by a lawmaker at the National Assembly.
According to Mr Oleyelogun, the wage bill if passed will further impoverish Nigerians workers, pledging that Ondo State lawmakers will ensure that minimum wage is not put in the concurrent list.
Speaking earlier, the State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Sunday Adeleye-Oluwole and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Helen Odofin said moving minimum wage to concurrent list would lead to enslavement of Nigerian workers especially state and local government workers.
The labour leaders pleaded with the state lawmakers to reject the bill if transmitted to Ondo State.

NLC, TUC Rally against NASS over Minimum Wage Bill

Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in Ogun state have staged a protest against the move by the National Assembly to remove the national minimum wage from the exclusive to the concurrent legislative list.

The state NLC chapter Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole while speaking with newsmen after the rally in Abeokuta stated that the NLC  was opposed to the proposed bill, describing it as an attempt to undermine Nigeria working class.

Comrade Bankole condemned the action of the National Assembly, noting that the move was not in tandem with global best practice.

The rally attended by allies of NLC commenced from the NLC state Secretariat through to the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Minimum Wage Bill: NLC, TUC Take Protest to NASS, States

A procession of large crowd of workers protesting against the bill before the National Assembly seeking to remove the minimum wage from the Exclusive Legislative list to the Concurrent have completely disrupted the traffic flow between Maitama via Federal Secretariat to the National Assembly Complex.

Addressing the mammoth crowd of workers at the Unity Fountain, Maitama Abuja before taking off to the National Assembly, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba described some politicians as the major problem Nigeria has today.

Comrade Wabba while expressing displeasure over the bill said there was need for a law to limit age of a political office holders to 70 to give room for Nigerian youths to assume leadership responsibility.

Similarly, in Zamfara State, NLC Chairperson Comrade Sani Halliru led the Mass Rally to Zamfara State House of Assembly and expressed workers worries about the National Minimum Wage Bill as directed by the national body of the NLC

NLC Raises Alarm Over Vandalism of Oyo Water Corporation Vehicles

Secretary, Nigeria Labour Congress, Oyo State Council, Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim has said that hoodlums have allegedly vandalised about eleven vehicles of the Water Corporation of Oyo state.

Striking Workers of the corporation had embarked on protests yesterday and vowed to continue the protest this morning.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria, Mr. Ibrahim stated that hoodlums in Hummer buses had around one o’ Clock this morning swooped on booster pumping station at Agodi, vandalising the vehicles and carting away the keys of the vehicles.

Mr. Ibrahim, who is also the State Secretary of Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreation Services Employees (AUPCTRE) said security agencies have been briefed about the development.

He appealed to the Striking Workers to remain calm, assuring them that the strike would not be suspended until the Oyo state government address their demands

Strike Suspension: Ogun Residents React

Suspension of the planned national strike by the Labour movement has generated mixed reactions among residents of Ogun State. 

Some residents, who described the late announcement of the strike suspension as inconvenient, urged the Labour leaders to always consider those who had to travel long distances to their duty posts when taking such decisions while others applauded the decision of the Labour leaders to cancel the strike. 

A school teacher, Mrs Florence Obakogbe and a local government employee, My Sunday Olaseyinde said they traveled to the state capital to take part in the proposed workers protest and could not return to their offices before 8 o’clock this morning due to the late announcement. 

Few of the workers who showed up early at the NUJ Secretariat, Abeokuta venue of the protest rally to meet the heavy presence of security agents also maintained that the government and Labour leaders should not have allowed their negotiations to drag for too long. 

Speaking with Radio Nigeria in Abeokuta, The State Ogun State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole said workers were asked to resume work in compliance with the National headquarters directive on the Strike.

Comrade Bankole said the State was still waiting for further directives despite the fact that different committees had been set up to look into the grievances of the workforce within the next two weeks.

NLC Insists on Reversal of fuel Price.

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress has approved the 28th of this month for a nationwide protest and industrial action against the hike in the pump price of petrol and electricity tariff.

Briefing newsmen at end of its meeting in Abuja, NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the NEC of NLC has reviewed the prevailing local and global petroleum prices and the impact of its hike as well as electricty tariff on workers and Nigerian masses.

He stated that NEC having analyzed the socioeconomic realities arising from govt decision has therefore adopted the ultimatum already served the govt to reverse its decision.

Comrade Wabba who frown at what he described as desperate attempts by government to force the new pump price of petrol and electricty tariff on Nigerians, stressed that the organised labour and its civil society allies would embark on massive nationwide protest at the expiration of the ultimatum on the 28th of this month.

Similarly, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC after a meeting held to review its mobilisation strategies on the planned protest over the same issues, said the Congress was going to to collaborate with the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC to execute the protest and the strike.

A statement by TUC President, Comrade Quadri Olayele explained that though the ultimatum earlier given to the Federal Government by TUC expired midnight of 22nd September but has resolved to shift it to the 28th of this month for effective and maximum impact.

The statement appealed to Nigerians to get ready for the unprecedented mass action and called on those especially in the informal sector to bear with the organised labour while the industrial action last.

Ogun: Workers Downtool

The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC in Ogun state have declared a seven day warning strike to demand for the abolition of the pension reform bill, payment of gratuities and new minimum wage, among others. 

Ogun State NLC chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole who made the declaration at the Arcade ground in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta shortly after a meeting with the government representatives noted that the negotiation between the two sides was deadlocked as the government representatives were not ready to shift ground.

Comrade Bankole noted that efforts to destabilize the labour would be repelled as the Seven day ultimatum handed to the government would expire by midnight of Tuesday fifteenth of September 2020.

He urged all state government workers to stay off duties from Wednesday sixteenth of September 2020.

The agitations of the workers include payments of outstanding six years leave allowances , three years promotion and one hundred and thirty four months unpaid gratuity by the government

Reacting to the warning strike declaration, Special Adviser to the governor on Media, Pastor Remmy Hazzan said the declaration does not tally with the proceedings of the negotiations noting that the government side was only waiting for response on the proposal from its side.

Pastor Hazzan said the Ogun state government is still waiting for the continuation of the negotiations to resolve the issues raised by the labour movement.

Groups Want FG To Cut Down Cost Of Governance

A coalition of pro-labour and Civil Society Organizations, JAF wants the Federal Government to cut down on the cost Governance rather than hike in prices of public utilities.

They made this known in Ibadan at a News Conference held at the hall of the Oyo state council of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC.

The Coordinator, Joint Action Front, JAF Oyo state chapter, Professor Ademola Aremu said the Labour Unions and CSOs were displeased with the insensitivity of the Federal Government to the plight of the common man.

He urged the Government to rescind its decision and revert pump price of petrol to eighty-seven Naira per liter.

On his part, Secretary to the Joint Action Front Mr Abiodun Bamgboye stressed that the coalition would embark on a sensitization of Nigerians to resist the new hikes until total reversal.

Mr Bamgboye said the activities would culminate in a mass action and protests to drive home their demands in the next one week.

He listed their demand to include reversal of utility prices and VAT to pre 2016 prices and repair of all old public refineries and construction of new ones.

Unions represented include ASUU, TUC, NLC, CLO and CDHR.

Update: Ekiti Workers Make U-Turn on Strike

The organised labour union in Ekiti State has announced the suspension of its ongoing strike.

The workers had on Monday embarked on a warning strike over the controversy surrounding the payment of their, outstanding salary, minimum wage and other issues affecting them.

According to the Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, the suspension of the strike is as a result of the agreement it reached with the state house of Assembly committee on public service and labour matters that pledged on behalf of the state government that the agreement would be honoured.

The meeting at the State Assembly complex had in attendance, NLC Chairman, TUC Chairman, and JANC Chairman.

Others include the Ekiti State Head of Service, Mrs Peju Babafemi, Chairman, House Committee on Public Service & Labour Matters, Hon. Juwa Adegbuyi, his vice Gboyega Aribisogan among others.

The labour leaders urged the State Government to honour the agreements while pledging that it would soon visit the headquarters of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company in the State to picket the office and demand the reason for the power outage in the State, and the reason for
taking money for energy not consumed.

Labour Begin 3-Day Warning Strike in Ekiti

Workers in Ekiti state on Monday complied with the three-day warning strike declared by the leadership of organised labour in the state to press home their demands.

At the Ekiti State Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, at some of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, only few workers were seen on ground.

The few workers on duty were seen in groups discussing the issue of the strike.

Also, entrances into some of the offices were locked while few offices were opened for management staff.

Similarly, reports from across the sixteen local governments of Ekiti state showed that council workers complied with warning strike.

However, council chairmen and other appointees as well as management staff were at their duty posts.

The Ekiti State Head of Service, Dr Peju Babafemi had earlier appealed to the organized labour to shelve the strike to enable the state government dialogue with them.

Akeredolu, Labour Unions, Agree on Payment of Leave Bonus Arrears, Others

Oganised Labour Unions and the Ondo State government have agreed to the approval of the immediate payment of five months outstanding deductions from salaries of the state workers from February to June, this year.

Similarly, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu ordered payment of 2018 leave bonus to all workers and settlement of 2019 leave bonus for workers on grade level one to six.

This formed part of the decisions reached by both government’s representatives and the labour unions when Mr Akeredolu held a crucial meeting with them in Akure.

The organised labour under the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) had two weeks ago sent a letter to the governor to demand payment of some of the workers’ outstanding entitlements ranging from 2018, 2019 leave bonus, unpaid accumulated deduction from February, 2020 till date.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Ondo State Head of Service, Mr Dare Aragbaiye as well as the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Donald Ojogo said the government would also settle Special COVID-19 hazard allowance of May, 2020 for health workers.

Mr Aragbaiye noted that out of the available resources of government, sixty-eight percent of June salary and pensions would be paid to local government workers.

Also speaking at a labour meeting in Akure, three unions’ leaders, Comrade Oluwaniyi Fabunmi of JNC; Sunday Adeleye-Oluwole of NLC and the vice chairman of TUC, Clement Fatuase, said they agreed to the payment arrangements to save workers who had mortgaged their salaries with cooperatives and loans from untold hardship.

The labour leaders declared that the latest agreement would go a long way in strengthening harmonious relationship between the Governor Akeredolu-led government and the labour unions in the state.

Stakeholders Want Ogun Government to Support Schools with Safety Equipment

Key players in the education sector of Ogun State have urged the government to provide schools with incentives and safety items ahead of the planned resumption of academic activities.

They made the submission at a stakeholders meeting organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC. 

Addressing the participants, the NLC Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole said the meeting was part of the Union’s effort to add value to the society, especially in the education sector.

In separate remarks, a representative of teachers, Mr Oyelere Samson and a private school owner, Dr Olumide Lawrence highlighted schools decontamination, provision of necessary infrastructure and recruitment of more teachers as necessary measures that must be put in place by the relevant authorities. 

The participants also advocated the need for government to use terminal classes as test run for the proposed WASSCE examination and the suspension of taxes and other levies for private schools.

Other contributors called for the adoption of e-platforms as an essential tool to strengthen the education sector.

Political Appointees Agree to 50% Salary Slash – Governor Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says senior political appointees in the state have agreed to a fifty percent slash of their salaries due to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic on the state’s economy.

Governor Makinde made this known while speaking at this year’s celebration of Workers’ Day held at Labour House, Ibadan, Oyo State.

He explained that the political appointees agreed to the pay cuts since the wellbeing of the common man takes precedence.

Governor Makinde equally disclosed that the state lawmakers had agreed to take a thirty percent slash of their monthly allocations.

According to the governor, the gesture of the lawmakers was geared towards at prioritising the economic safety of the state’s workforce.

Governor Makinde appealed to workers in the state to continue to show commitment to duty and come up with ideas that would revamp the economy of the state which has been seriously affected by the pandemic.

Earlier, the Oyo State chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Alhaji Sikiru Titilola-Sodo commended Governor Makinde for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries despite the economic situation of the state.
