Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, says his administration has been able to bring about a level of economic stability in the state with the monthly payment of about 24 billion naira in salaries to state and local government workers.

The governor stated this when Muslim faithful, comprising clerics, traditional rulers and political office holders at the federal, state and local government levels paid a visit to his Ikolaba, Ibadan home, shortly after the Eid-el-Fitri prayers at the Eid Ground, Agodi, Ibadan.

He said his government’s commitment to expanding the economy of the state has also been yielding results in terms of private sector investments, as more private sector players have become comfortable investing in the state.

The delegation, which was led by the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, included the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; Senator representing Oyo South, Oloye Sharafadeen Alli; former Deputy Governor and PDP Deputy National Chairman, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; and Professor Kamil Oloso, among others.

While addressing the delegation, the governor congratulated the Muslim Ummah on witnessing the end of Ramadan and the Eid-el-Fitri 2025.

He lauded them for their prayers, patriotism and commitment to the state as well as their support for his government, noting that the economic stability and developments being witnessed in the state were as a result of the peace and harmonious coexistence among residents of the state.

While noting that the new Oyo State is renowned for peace, unity and harmony, the governor urged all residents to work hard to sustain the atmosphere, adding that every good thing they desire for the state is tied to the existence of peace and harmony in the state.

“One of those things we desire is economic stability in our state. Now, every four weeks, N24 billion gets into the economy of Oyo State through workers’ salaries. The wage bill of the state is now around N14 billion, while that of the local government is about N10 billion.”

“Similarly on the private sector side, a lot of people are now comfortable to come and invest in Oyo State and we have seen quite a lot of investments. Yesterday, we were at the Ijaiye Farm Settlement because of the Farmers’ Wholesale Market that is coming in there. I went there to inspect the place and you will be surprised that in that settlement, we have 27,000 hectares of land. We have asked them to carve out just 3,000 hectares out of the 27,000 for that project.”

“Let me also say this; political office holders across the country should do their best to improve things, because it has been a difficult and challenging period for the people, but as they say, tough times don’t last, only tough people do”, Governor Makinde explained.

Delivering the message of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Ladoja called for patience among the people of Oyo State and urged them to remain steadfast and hopeful in the face of challenges.

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Lekan Balogun has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the conduct of the election.

Oba Balogun also congratulated the re-elected governor of Oyo State, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde on his victory in last Saturday’s gubernatorial election, describing his re-election as a reward for keeping faith with his covenant with the people of the state.

Oba Balogun made this remark in his reaction to the result of the gubernatorial election which returned Engineer Makinde as the winner in a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media, Oladele Ogunsola which was made available to journalists in Ibadan on Sunday.

The election result, according to the paramount ruler was a verdict of the confidence of the people in the governor and which he earned through his service to the people in his first term, asking him not to take the support for granted in his new term but to work harder so that the people of the state would not feel disappointed.

Olubadan noted that “there’s always the tendency for the second timer to be lethargic because there’s nothing to aspire for again, at least at the state level, but, I appeal to you to see the new mandate as a call to do more in terms of service delivery. The confidence reposed in you by the people by voting you in is hinged on hope for more dividends of democracy by your government.

“In your inner recess, I implore you to cast your mind back to some of the issues raised as criticisms by your opponents during the electioneering and do something about them. Not all of them were political propaganda or mere attempts to demarket you and your administration, but very germane and crucial to good governance.

“Let the generality of the people of the state remain your focus in the emerging new dispensation and in doing that play less emphasis on party politics. Keep open arms and embrace all for the overall growth and development of the state. You can’t do all, but, let it be said of you at the end of another four years that you did your possible best and let the people of the state remain proud of the choice made in you”, Olubadan added.

While praying for a very successful tenure for the re-elected governor, the monarch called for the support of all and sundry for him with a charge that with the conclusion of the elections, politics should take the back seat while all hands must be on deck for a more prosperous state. “Irrespective of political party affiliation, the state belongs to all of us and we must all be seen placing it far above our individual and personal interests”, the monarch charged further.

Oba Balogun also praised the electoral umpire (INEC) for the peaceful conduct of the election, noting that the agency did a yeoman’s job for dousing the already mounting tension ahead of the election by placing patriotism and professionalism above every other consideration in the discharge of the sacred duty which caught the admiration of all.

…felicitates Christians on Christmas

The Palace of Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Senator Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II was agog on Wednesday as children, numbering about 500 and their parents within and around the Alarere area of Ibadan trooped to the Palace to meet with Santa Claus, popularly referred to as “Father Christmas” as part of celebrations of this year’s Christmas festivity.

Speaking while receiving the Father Christmas alongside some of the children that paid him a courtesy visit at the carnival-like programme, Oba Balogun rejoiced with the children and their parents for the occasion, the first of such to be celebrated by him as the Olubadan of Ibadanland and counselled the parents to take proper care of their children.

In a press release made available to journalists by his Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola, the monarch, told the parents that they should always be conscious of their responsibilities over their children which are God-ordained.

“I urge our parents to please know that should they fail their children, they have definitely failed God. Give them sound home training as well as western education.”

“Our children are our future. Whatever our achievements or accomplishments in life are, if our children are not the ones to be proud of, we have not achieved or made any accomplishments. I’m happy to receive these children in my palace today as part of this year’s Christmas celebration and I pray that the author of Christmas would preserve these children for us and make them responsible and respectable children in society”, he added.

While congratulating the Christians for this year’s festivity, Olubadan reminded them of the essence of the annual event which he described as an expression of agape love and asked them not to be carried away by the fun-fare always attached to the occasion but to always reflect on its purpose and juxtapose it with their lifestyles towards making necessary amends for the essence of the occasion to be fulfilled.

He also urged them to use the occasion to pray for a peaceful and hitch-free election holding early next year, reminding them that “since this is the only remaining religious festivity preceding the all very crucial elections, we should use the opportunity to take our matter before the creator of heaven and earth and our all-knowing God in whose power alone resides success of the electoral exercise”.

At the occasion, the organizer of the programme, who is also the Palace Chaplain, Pastor Olusoji Adediji said the purpose of organizing the programme was to praise God for upholding the palace since Olubadan came to the throne and to identify with the residents of the Alarere area which presently hosts the palace without laying emphasis on religious differences.

“I must acknowledge the open arms with which Olubadan accepts me and all my activities since he came to the throne not minding his religious background as a Muslim. I must say I’m not in any way surprised because our referred father has never been a religious bigot but an open-minded person all his life and this has in no small way played a very big factor in his peaceful reign so far”, the Chaplain added.

Before the children visited the Father Christmas arena where they received free gifts, there were songs ministration, and prayers for the monarch, his household, Ibadanland, Oyo State and Nigeria in general.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II on Tuesday commended the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba AbdulRoshid Akanbi Adewale Telu 1 for his commitment to growth, progress and development of his people and Yorubaland in general, describing him as an asset to mankind.

Oba Balogun gave this commendation during his visit to the Oluwo in his palace at Iwo alongside some members of Olubadan-in-Council, Senior Chiefs and Mogajis as well as some Aliwo sons and daughters led by the Oyo South Senator, Dr. Kola Balogun.

At the carnival-like reception in the beautifully decorated hall where there were some Obas from around the ancient Iwo Town in attendance, including Alawo of Awo, Akire of Ikire, Onileegbo of Ileegbo among others, Olubadan expressed surprise at the turn-out of the people noting that he only came back home on a private visit to his brother and friend.

Describing the Oluwo as a brilliant monarch, Oba Balogun said his activities over the years had proved him as somebody with knack for achievements among which he said culminated in the recent decision by the two governments of Oyo and Osun States to rehabilitate the road connecting that two states that runs from Ibadan (Oyo State capital) through Iwo to Osogbo (the capital of Osun State).

In his short speech, the Oluwo described the visit as very unique and important to him, saying, “that somebody from Iwo lineage rose to become Olubadan of Ibadanland, the largest city in West Africa and the third of such in the whole continent of Africa during his reign as Oluwo gives him great joy that is even difficult to express”.

I’m aware that the history of Aliiwo is also traced to Ogbomoso which nobody can dispute, but, the centrality and importance of Iwo makes it special and which is reflected in the suffix-Alli Iwo. They are called by that name because they hail from Iwo, otherwise, they would have called them ‘Alli Ogbomoso’. Frankly speaking, we are one and that’s what we should all hold on to”.

Oba AbdulRashid Akanbi Adewale thanked the Olubadan and his entourage for the visit with a promise to continue doing all within his power and ability to improve his environment, urging for the cooperation and support of all.

The efforts that produced the rehabilitation of the Osogbo-Iwo-Ibadan road by the state governments concerned are still very much there for similar purpose as occasion may demand“, he added.

The Chairman, Iwo Board of Trustees, Professor Lai Olorode in his welcome address during the visit said, he could not recall when last an Olubadan visited the ancient Iwo Town, noting that though, the late Alaafin visited the town, the visit could not be compared with the one by Olubadan with the massive entourage.

The former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioner praised Ibadan for its hospitality, recalling that, “it is a place where people go to and make it in life. Yet, it never diminishes in growth, ever-expanding and one other unique characteristic of Ibadans is that they don’t forget home wherever they may be”.

As Nigeria marks her 62nd year of independence anniversary, the citizens have been called upon to retrace their steps from the seemingly unproductive paths that had over the years stagnated the country’s growth and development.

This call was made by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II in the congratulatory message to Nigerians on the occasion of the Independence Day anniversary made available to journalists by his Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola on Saturday.

The monarch, who lamented that the hopes and aspirations of young Nigerians among whom he was then when Nigeria got her independence in 1960 were a far cry from what is presently manifesting, said the leaders owe it a duty to redirect and reshape the affairs of the country towards rekindling those hopes and aspirations.

According to him, “this is not the country we were looking forward to when we got our independence in 1960 and certainly, this is not the kind of country our founding fathers worked towards. The question to ask ourselves is where did we get it wrong and how did we find ourselves where we are now?”

By answering these questions sincerely, we must be able to retrace our steps and chart a new path that would lead to the country of our dream. There must be concerted efforts to instil hope and confidence in the present and coming generations. A situation where travelling abroad to permanently live there is now the desire of both old and young says much about how frustrated people are.”

“Yet, we possess the capacity and capability to make this country better and livable for all and sundry if we have the will. That’s why we should all use this occasion of anniversary celebration to soberly reflect on how to change the present narratives of insecurity, corruption, unemployment, and low economy among others”, he added.

2023 elections very strategic to Nigeria’s future – Oba Balogun

Asking that the general elections holding early next year should be used to address all the nagging issues by voting for competence, integrity and antecedents, as against sentiments and stomach infrastructure, Oba Balogun described the election as a very strategic one that has the capacity to reshape the affairs of this country, depending on how altruistic people are in their choice.

He congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, Engineer Seyi Makinde, Nigerians in general, both at home and in the diaspora and the Ibadan residents in particular on the anniversary with a charge that all hands must be on deck to make Nigeria great and a country that all could be proud of.

Following the controversies trailing the appointment of Jagun in the two ruling lines of Olubadan chieftaincy title, the three letters which emanated from the Palace have been cancelled.

The three letters, two for Jagun Balogun and one for Jagun Olubadan were issued in error as only two vacancies exist in each of the two lines of Olubadan and Balogun.

This is contained in a statement by the media aide to Olubadan of Ibadanland, Mr Dele Ogunsola.

Alhaji Akinola who lauded the good character of the Olubadan- in -waiting was optimistic that with his wealth of experience, Ibadan would witness progressive development during his period.

The Aare Musulumi thanked God for bringing to pass the agelong desire of Ali Iwo family to the throne of Olubadan of Ibadanland again.
He prayed to God  for wisdom, strength and long life for the Olubadan designate.

The Chief Imam, Oluyole Extension Estate Mosque,  Alhaji Mudathir Bada who was part of the entourage of the Aare Musulumi led the people in prayers for the Olubadan.

Responding on behalf of Olubadan designate, High Chief Hamidu Ajibade thanked Aare Musulumi and his entourage for the visit.

He also urged the religious leader to pay  attention to the palace of the Olubadan Designate, considering the religious background of High Chief Balogun as a devout Muslim, pointing at the mosque situated within the compound as a fact  to justify his claim.

Traditionally, wishing for a king to join his ancestors so as to give an heir-apparent the opportunity is a taboo and an aberration in Yorubaland.

In fact, in Ibadan where the succession plan to the Olubadan stool is not controversial, tradition says any potential occupier of the exalted seat that wishes the passage of the sitting Oba will never live to wear the crown.

However, it is a natural law that a disappointment to one might be a blessing to others.

Therefore, the two sides to a coin set in on Sunday, the 2nd of January, 2022 when the news of the passage of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje-Ogungunniso 1 rented the air, there was mourning at Popoyemoja, the palace of Oba Adetunji while at Aliwo, where the new Olubadan-Designate, Oba Mohood Olalekan Balogun hails from was in ecstasy.

It was light dancing at the beginning, but within a jiffy, Aliwo sons and daughters were trooping in to share in the praisesinging that the hope of the crown coming back to the family 70 years after the reign of the first Olubadan from the lineage, Oba Memudu Aliwo 1 seems alive.

Olubadan Traditional drummers and singers have also shifted base and moved to Aliwo in line with the customs where they now give royal welcome to guests.

As if it was pre-planned whereas it was a mere coincidence, Aliwo has been wearing a new look since last year starting from the reconstruction and remodeling of Aliwo Central Mosque as well as the ongoing renovation of Aliwo Palace which were all facilitated by the Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Dr Kola Balogun, the son of the soil and a younger brother to Olubadan-Designate.

Similarly, the residence of Oba Lekan Balogun at Alarere along New-Ife Road is now getting a facelift as well as other facilities so as to meet the royal standard.

The place has also been a mecca of sorts since, hosting different categories of people in the society.

There is no iota of doubt that this will be the first time that Alarere Community will experience the volume of people that troop to the area on a daily basis to extend congratulatory messages to the Olubadan-Designate.

In a symbiotic relationship, the development has also boosted the economy of the community.

Truly, it is a party-like mood in the recent time at the residence of the Olubadan-in-waiting as the atmosphere is always convivial.

Family members, relatives, friends and neigbours have an opportunity to eat and drink while even some less-privileged ones who have turned the place to their abode were not left out.

Those that have paid homage to the Olubadan-Designate apart from the Olubadan-in-Council and Baales who are from outside Oyo State are Senator Ganiyu Solomon from Lagos State, Senator Andy Uba from Anambra and former Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Lalong from Plateau State, Prince Lisa Patako from Ondo State and Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo.

Others are Minister of Youths and Sports, Hon. Sunday Dare, Former Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, Chief Olasunkanmi Tegbe and Hon. Leke Apapa.

Artisan groups and non-Yoruba speaking Associations including head of Hausa Community in Oyo State, Alhaji Ali Zungeru and Igbo leaders in the state were also part of the homage as a way of appreciating peace and progress in Ibadan, the largest city in the Sub-Saharan Africa.

Management and staff of neighbouring Alarere Community Secondary School, Alarere Community Primary School and from St. John Anglican School, Atenda, opposite Aliwo were not left out of the train as they used the opportunity to move closer to royalty.

No doubt, prayer is essential during a period like this as alfas, pastors among the guests as well as Prelate of the Methodist Church and CAN executives created time to pray for the Olubadan-Designate while a mosque within the premises of the house is also another prayer ground.

Back to Aliwo, there have been meetings upon meetings by the Aliwo sons and daughters including those in the diaspora communicating through different social media platforms.

Various committees and sub-committees have been formed all in preparations for a befitting and first class coronation of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Ankara fabrics (Aso-ebi) have been selected while bales of the clothes are being displayed for sale at the entrance of Aliwo.

Obviously, in line with a Yorùbá expression, if an horse-race was conducted in the bellies of sons and daughters of Aliwo, it will be an hitch-free exercise, while their prayer point is for God to grant the Olubadan-Designate long life and sound health on the throne of his forefathers!

The delay in assenting the nomination of Otun Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland by the state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde may soon be over with the unanimous decision of the High Chiefs to withdraw the case in court.

This was the outcome of the meeting of the members of Olubadan-in-Council held today at the Oja’ba Palace of the Olubadan.

Otun-Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Tajudeen Ajibola who briefly spoke with our reporter after the closed door meeting which lasted about two hours said the High Chiefs had concurred with the governor to withdraw the suit in court.

He said the process of withdrawing the case had commenced, stressing that due process would be followed when asked about when the process would be concluded.

According to High Chief Ajibola, the case was adjourned to the 1st of February this year and whatever happens, we would have to get to the court before the withdrawal can take place”.

It would be recalled that the members of the Olubadan-in-Council met with the state Governor last Saturday over the issue of succession to the Olubadan throne which became vacant following the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1 on the 2nd of January this year.

At the meeting, it was gathered that the court case was the main issue delaying government pronouncement of the next Olubadan as proposed by the Ibadan Kingmakers at their last week meeting.

The court case becoming contentious was instituted by the High Chiefs to challenge the consent judgment nullifying the elevation granted them as Royal Majesties by the immediate past administration of the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

A former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Micheal Lana had barely 24 hours after the death of Oba Adetunji gone to town with a letter, asking the governor not to assent any nomination to the vacant Ibadan stool by the Kingmakers unless the court case is withdrawn.

The said letter had since become the barometer with which the general public views and judge the succession order to the vacant Olubadan stool.

In the meantime, the Coronet-wearing Obas who enjoyed the same promotion from their Baaleship positions to Royal Highnesses with the High Chiefs and who were at today’s meeting at the Oja’ba Palace were yet to take decision on the withdrawal of the case in court.

It was gathered that they agreed to hold a separate meeting this Thursday on the matter at the same venue.

Though the cases were similar, they were filed separately which made the Royal Highnesses not to be binded by the decision of the High Chiefs.
