A newly formed body of former labour leaders under the auspices of Oyo State Labour Veterans Association on Tuesday charged the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Sen. Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II to maintain his activism of old that made him a friend of the downtrodden on the new throne.
The association made this charge through its President, Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope during the homage paid to the monarch at his Alarere residence by its executive committee.
Comrade Bolomope, who recalled that he was the Oyo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, when Olubadan was a Senator of the Federal Republic between 1999 and 2003 said the monarch invited him to his Abuja residence in his capacity as a labour leader, an experience he said he still savours till date.
“The irony of it is that no Senator from Oyo State has extended such gesture to any of the labour leaders in the state since that time. Kabiyesi, we are not surprised by your disposition because of your background and it is that gesture that has made you to be loved by the masses.
“As your children with the same ideology, we are happy with Your Majesty’s emergence, having been following the trajectory of your rise and your undoubting spirit that has preserved you for this throne and it is our wish that Kabiyesi remains a committed unionist even on the throne towards ensuring the preservation of the rights of the common people”, Bolomope stated.
While reacting, Olubadan commended the association for its resolve not to abandon the struggle despite the fact that the members had all retired from active service, noting that their wealth of experience in labour matters would be handy for both government and their successors.
Promising to remain himself as a friend of the downtrodden, Oba Balogun urged the association to see itself as a reliable partner of the palace by coming closer with good suggestions and advices that would lessen his burden reiterating that he would operate an open-door policy.
The monarch was later presented with the copy of the Constitution of the association by the President, Comrade Bolomope, who also said all the members would come back at a latter date to investiture Kabiyesi as their Patron.

In preparation for the coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Olalekan Balogun has been gifted two different vehicles from the state Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.
Below are the pictures to the presentation of the gifts, including captions:

Ibadan Festival holding mid-March and Ramadan Fast commencing in April will be given serious consideration in choosing the date for the coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun.
Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Tajudeen Ajibola stated this while briefing journalists after the maiden meeting of the Council held at the Alarere residence of the new Ibadan monarch.
He said the meeting which had all members of the Olubadan-in-Council in attendance, except the Osi Olubadan, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja and Iyalode of Ibadanland, High Chief Theresa Oyekanmi was to pay courtesy call on Oba Lekan Balogun and formally congratulate him on his elevation from the position of Otun to that of Olubadan.
High Chief Ajibola said the possible date of the inauguration of the new Olubadan was discussed with heavy consideration for Ibadan Week Festival holding mid-March and the Ramadan Fast commencing early April.
He said the new Olubadan has to be present at the annual Ibadan Week Festival, hence the need for the coronation before the programme.
“Again, we are conscious of Ramadan Fast and would not want to put our guests under unnecessary pressure by holding the inauguration during the period. All these we considered at the meeting but could not make any categorical statement on the date of the coronation until we meet with the governor, Engr Seyi Makinde”, the High Chief added.
It was at the meeting, according to High Chief Ajibola that it was resolved that courtesy and thank you visit be made to Governor Seyi Makinde.
“We all visited the governor and despite the fact that we didn’t meet him, we were well received by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun who promised to convey our message to him”, he said.
Ahead of the inauguration of the new Olubadan, High Chief Ajibola said the Council took note of the necessary promotion and reconstitution of the Olubadan-in-Council occasioned by the elevation of Otun to the position of Olubadan.
He said the Council approved the upward movement of Osi Olubadan,
High Chief Rashidi Ladoja
to Otun Olubadan, Ashipa Olubadan, High Chief Eddy Oyewole to Osi-Olubadan, and High Chief Abiodun Kola-Daisi from Ekerin Olubadan to Ashipa Olubadan.
Others are High Chief Hamidu Ajibade from Ekarun Olubadan to Ekerin Olubadan and the new member that will join the Council is Senior Chief Adebayo Akande from Maye Olubadan to Ekarun Olubadan.
On the absence of two of the Council members, High Chief Ajibola explained that High Chief Theresa Oyekanmi was known by all of them to be outside Nigeria while High Chief Rasidi Ladoja sought the Council’s permission to honour a medical appointment that had been fixed earlier.
The new Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun presided over the meeting.

The last may not have been heard about the controversy over the installation of a new supreme royal authority for Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state.
The latest unraveling on the transition process also indicate that there may be no announcement of a new occupant of the Olubadan stool anytime soon.
It was gathered that Balogun and other members of the Olubadan-in-Council who were crowned Obas in 2017 are yet to fulfill their pledge to Governor Seyi Makinde that they would withdraw a case challenging a consent judgment earlier given on the matter.
According to reports, rather than withdraw the case as they promised Governor Seyi Makinde at a meeting held in Government House two weeks ago, they appear to have resolved to see it to the end.
At the hearing of the case on January 14, Justice Munta Abimbola, who is the Chief Judge of the state, directed parties in the suit to further address the court on the validity or otherwise of the consent judgment in view of the decision of the Appeal Court.
The parties, through their lawyers, are to address Justice Abimbola on Tuesday [February 1]. When pressed for comment on whether moves had been made to withdraw the case, a former Attorney General of the state, Michael Lana, told Sunday Tribune that he was surprised to see that Balogun’s lawyers have filed a further written address instead of filing a notice of withdrawal of the case.
Lana, who is counsel for one of the defendants, said he and other lawyers had wanted to appeal the decision of Justice Abimbola that the parties address the court on the validity or otherwise of the consent judgment, but decided against doing so since the claimants said they would withdraw the case.
“We had 14 days to appeal the decision, but waited in view of the claimants’ expression of intent to withdraw the case as expressed during their meeting with Governor Makinde.
“But instead of a notice of withdrawal of the case,” he said, “we received their argument which they have filed before the court on the validity or otherwise of the consent judgment,” he said.
He said he had no choice than to approach the Appeal Court to challenge the issue of validity or otherwise of the consent judgment raised by Justice Abimbola.
According to him, the appeal was filed on Thursday, January 27, one day to the expiry of 14 days within which such action must be taken.
On the implication of the appeal, he said the case at the High Court would have to wait for the appeal to be decided.
The High Chiefs made obas are in court to challenge the consent judgment which set aside the gazette that recognised them as obas.
Reacting to the development, the Senator representing Oyo South and younger brother to the Olubadan-designate, Dr Kola Balogun, gave an assurance that “the whole world will clap for Ibadan and our unique approach to handling matters this week.
“The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has given a directive that no Ibadan person should make a comment on the matter again, whether on social media or in the conventional media.
“As a result and because I know prominent Ibadan people are working round the clock to ensure amicable resolution of the matter. For me or any other person to be speaking on the matter is tantamount to violating the directive of the CCII.
“From my knowledge of what is going on, the issue will be laid to rest next week. I may not be able to say more than that.
“By next week, the whole world will clap for Ibadan people and our unique approach to handling matters,” he said.
Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja had sued former governor Abiola Ajimobi and the inquiry commission that recommended the high chiefs for crowning as obas as acting in violation of the 1957 Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration.
Ladoja won at the state High Court as Justice Olajumoke Aiki set aside the gazette as well as the decisions made based on it.
But dissatisfied with the judgment, Ajimobi appealed.
The Appellate Court, in its decision, set aside Aiki’s decision on technical grounds and directed a retrial of the case.
Makinde, who inherited the case, said he was not willing to be distracted by the case and called for out-of-court settlement and a return to the status quo.
The terms of settlement were entered as consent judgment by the court, putting a closure on the matter.
But Balogun and others expressed displeasure over the consent judgment, arguing they were shut out.
Having been told they could not appeal, they filed a fresh suit against the judgment.
There had been controversy over the appropriateness of the emergence of Balogun as Olubadan, having been crowned oba, along with 20 others, by the immediate past governor, late Senator Ajimobi.
It will be recalled that Governor Makinde, during a visit to the family of the late Olubadan had insisted that the original concept used in appointing a new Olubadan be returned to.
Balogun is the most senior High Chief in the line that is producing the next Olubadan.
Since the late Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji joined his ancestors on January 2, a new one ought to have been named.
But the controversy sparked by the status of some high chiefs who were crowned obas and the court cases have stalled the process.

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, has removed Chief Saheed Alatise, Baale Lagelu Aboke in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Chief Alatise who has been embroiled in one crisis or the other became Baale in September, 2017. The Council noted that while the removed Baale had been accused of one allegation or the other over the past one year, his continued refusal to defend himself is an act of contumely against Olubadan and is punishable under Ibadan Customs and Traditions.
Part of the allegations leveled against the removed Baale is that he falsely presented himself for chieftaincy installation as Baale Aboke when he is not a male child of the family.
In a letter written by members of Lagelu Aboke family of Ibadan to Olubadan-in-Council and signed by Ganiyu Oladokun Okerinu Aboke (Family Head); Tiamiyu Lamidi Okerinu Aboke (Baale) and the secretary of the family, it was stated that Saheed Alatise who hails from Agbede Adodo, Ibadan, cannot honestly represent Lagelu Aboke family of Idi-Ishin Compound, Beere, Ibadan.
They stated further that “besides, we members of the Aboke family, Ibadan, do not approve of the conduct of Saheed Alatise as his conduct as Baale runs contrary to the counsels often given to chiefs before their installation as Baale.”
