Britain will impose airspace restrictions and deploy armed police officers in Windsor next week as President Bola Tinubu arrives for a state visit hosted by King Charles III.

President Tinubu is expected to begin the visit in the company of his wife Oluremi Tinubu on Wednesday, March 18, with a reception at Windsor Castle.

Thames Valley Police in a statement on its website on Wednesday, said it is working with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household and other security partners.

The force said airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle, which are in place permanently throughout the year, would be extended on Wednesday, March 18, to cover the period from 7am to 11.59pm.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit said the air restrictions formed part of a broader security operation for the visit.

“The air restrictions are just one part of our robust security operation for the state visit of Nigerian President Tinubu next week, with many measures you will see and others you will not..

As a force, we have a vast amount of experience in policing Royal events in Windsor and significant planning, and preparation has gone into this event,” Hall said.

He said the force would take a strong stance in enforcing the restrictions, warning that any breach would constitute a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could lead to arrest.

“We will be taking a strong stance in enforcing the restrictions; anyone who breaches them will be committing a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order and could be arrested.”

The police chief said officers with specialist capabilities, including search teams, the Mounted Section, road policing, and armed units, would be deployed across Windsor, alongside neighbourhood policing and Project Servator resources.

“We will also be deploying numerous police officers to Windsor with specialist capabilities, including our search teams, Mounted Section, Roads Policing and armed units, while our neighbourhood and Project Servator resources will also be on the ground engaging with the public,” he said.

The authorities will also deploy an extensive closed-circuit television network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, and other undisclosed security measures for the event.

Hall said, “We will also be using the extensive CCTV network in Windsor, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation barriers, and many other security measures that you may not be able to see to make sure the event runs safely.”

He urged members of the public to support the security operation by remaining vigilant.

The public plays a critical role to support us so we encourage them to report any suspicious activity or anything that does not seem quite right by calling 101 or speaking to one of our officers. If there is an immediate threat or emergency, then call 999,” Hall added.

Road closures and parking restrictions will take effect from Tuesday, March 17, with possible temporary disruption to roads in and around Windsor during the visit.

Thames Valley Police said it was being supported by the Civil Aviation Authority and National Air Traffic Services to enforce the flight restrictions. Persons with legitimate reasons for drone flying were directed to email [email protected].

President Bola Tinubu says his administration remains committed to building on the legacies of Nigeria’s founding leaders, including Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, to achieve sustainable and inclusive national prosperity despite current economic challenges.

The president stated this at the 2026 Samuel Ladoke Akintola Memorial Lecture held at the University of Ibadan to mark the 60th anniversary of the assassination of the former Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola.

Represented by the Minister of Power, Oloye Adebayo Adelabu, President Tinubu described the late nationalist as a bridge-builder, patriot and visionary leader whose ideals remain relevant to Nigeria’s unity and development.

The President said Chief Akintola’s commitment to cooperation across ethnic and political divides, his belief in fairness and his passion for education offer enduring lessons for contemporary Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said Chief Akintola served as Minister of Aviation, where he laid the foundation for Nigeria Airways, and as Minister of Health, where he contributed significantly to the establishment of the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan.

Senator Akume said Chief Akintola deliberately designed his regional development policies to promote unity and inclusiveness, adding that his strong belief in education and infrastructure development reflected in his contributions to institutions such as the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, and the Cocoa House.

The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, described Chief Akintola as a courageous and influential leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s development remain significant despite his complex historical profile.

Governor Makinde said Chief Akintola’s life reminds Nigerians that leaders, though human and imperfect, can take bold actions that shape history.

In her welcome address, the daughter of the late statesman, Dr Bimbo Akintola, said her father’s favourite Bible passage was “The Lord is my Shepherd,” adding that God indeed shepherded his life to the very end.

Dignitaries at the lecture included representatives of the Lagos State Government, traditional rulers, legal luminaries and captains of industry.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area, a landmark decision set to usher Ogun State into Nigeria’s league of oil-producing states.

Governor Abiodun made this known while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, alongside senior naval officers, during a courtesy visit to his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor also announced that President Tinubu has approved the immediate take-off of the Olokola Deep Seaport Project in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, ending years of delay surrounding the multibillion-dollar port initiative.

According to Governor Abiodun, both projects are of special interest to the President, noting that the Olokola Deep Seaport would help decongest Lagos ports, while oil drilling at Tongeji Island would drive economic inclusion and directly empower coastal communities.

He added that the proposed seaport would be known as the Blue Marine Economic Zone, reflecting its strategic coastal position and vast commercial potential, adding that President Tinubu has directed that construction be significantly advanced between now and next year.

Governor Abiodun commended the Nigerian Navy for establishing a Forward Operations Base at Tongeji Island, saying the move would strengthen border security, prevent infiltration from the Benin Republic, and safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He added that the state government is working to provide basic amenities for residents of the island to improve their living conditions and support emerging economic activities.

The governor also praised the Nigerian Navy for its role in sustaining peace and security in Ogun State, describing Rear Admiral Mustapha as a seasoned officer capable of enhancing security in the state.

Earlier, Rear Admiral Mustapha described Ogun State as strategic to Nigeria’s national security, revealing that the naval outpost at Tongeji Island would be upgraded due to the area’s oil potential.

He said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and the Ogun State Government, particularly in securing the nation’s border and preventing criminal activities.

Speaking during an event on his tour of the Egbeda/Ona-Ara Federal Constituency, Senator Folarin said massive voter registration would position Oyo State to significantly improve its 2023 electoral performance for President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

Pioneer Special Forces Commander, Major-General Moundhey Gadzama Ali (rtd), has called on serving and retired senior officers to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s Minister of Defence–designate, General Christopher Musa, saying unified military support is crucial to ending Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

Major-General Ali made the appeal in Lagos during a media chat.

He said the task before General Musa is enormous and requires practical input, cooperation, and honest counsel from experienced officers—not passive observation or political posturing.

He urged retired generals, infantry officers, and members of the Special Forces community to offer solutions that will strengthen the minister-designate’s capacity to defeat terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

“Let us all rally behind one of our own, General CG Musa, who has just been nominated by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to serve as Minister of Defence,” he said. “As he leads, in the spirit of ‘follow me’, let us openly provide answers to critical requirements to assist him in seeing to the end of banditry, terrorism and insurgency in our dear nation. Together, we can make the herculean task easy.”

Describing General Musa as a longtime friend and trusted colleague, Major-General Ali advised him to remain firm, focused, and immune to sycophancy, noting that Nigeria’s security crisis is fueled by powerful interests.

He urged the minister-designate to confront sponsors and enablers of criminal networks “no matter whose horse is gored.”

With Nigeria still grappling with insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in the North-West, and emerging threats elsewhere, he said General Musa’s success will depend heavily on collective support from the officer corps.

“Towards a better Nigeria indeed,” he added, urging the military community to treat General Musa’s appointment as a national commitment, not an individual responsibility.

Major-General Ali also criticised the culture of political patronage and weak accountability in appointing and screening public officials.

He warned that Nigeria must embrace transparency and merit to earn global respect and improve governance outcomes.

He faulted security agencies for failing to present or act on available intelligence during screenings, saying such lapses damage national credibility.

“The world has gone beyond the sentiments of ‘my townsman’. This is the time of transparency, honesty, commitment and discharging one’s duties without prejudice before loyalty,” he said.

Major-General Ali’s remarks come amid high expectations that General Musa, who recently retired as Chief of Defence Staff, will bring his experience in joint operations, counter-terrorism, and defence reform to his new role as Minister of Defence.

Our correspondent reports that his nomination has been widely welcomed across security circles as a sign of continuity in the fight against insecurity.

Adapting mechanized farming for food production, encouraging research and partnership, and implementing agricultural policies have been emphasized as the major factors that would help Nigeria achieve food security.

Professor of Agricultural Communication at the University of Ibadan, Kuta Yahaya, stated this during the second phase of his three-phase lecture for the Institution’s 45th lecture, held at the Trenchard Hall.

In the lecture entitled: Decolonization as a Golden Key to unlock Food Security, Professor Yahaya said the government needed to diversify food sources, promote social safety net, encourage collaboration across sectors and enhance the policy framework, as well as eliminate farmers-herders conflicts.

The Don noted that the challenges militating against food security in Nigeria include double taxation, insecurity, cattle rustling, and finance.

He commended President Bola Tinubu’s Agricultural Policies which he said are being felt in the country’s food sub-sector.

The Professor of Agriculture stressed the need for the government to learn from Niger, Borno, Osun and Oyo States that had initiated and transformed agricultural practices to business ventures.

He said the government needed to partner developed countries as done in Niger state which partnered China and can now boast of a mechanized farming system engaging male and female youths in the agricultural value chain.

In his response, the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Bago said the lecture adequately addressed numerous challenges food security is grappling with in the country.

The signing ceremony took place on Friday in the President’s office at the State House, Abuja, in the presence of principal officers of the National Assembly and other top government officials.

As Christians celebrate the victory of life over death, exemplified by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Nigeria will triumph over her challenges.

Governance

President Bola Tinubu has banned ministers, heads of agencies, and other government officials from embarking on public funded foreign trips.

This was contained in a letter dated March 12, 2024, signed by the Chief of Staff to the president, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila; and addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr George Akume.

The ban will last for three months in the first instance and will take effect on April 1, 2024.

President Tinubu had earlier issued an order to reduce the number of people accompanying him on both local and foreign trips, noting that his delegation members should not exceed 25 for local travels and 20 for international trips.

He also mandated that security agents at his destination should provide his protection instead of being accompanied by many security personnel from Abuja.

This came following the backlash he faced during and after the last twenty-eighth Conference of Parties (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates, which about 590 Nigerian officials attended.

Responding to the public outburst, the government said it provided funding for only 422 out of the 590 individuals in the delegation.

The letter indicating the ban read in part that Mr President has concerns about the rising cost of travel expenses borne by Ministries, Department and Agencies of Government as well as the growing need for cabinet members and heads of MDAs to focus on their respective mandates for effective service delivery.

The ban, according to the letter, was aimed at reducing costs in governance.

It says all government officials who intend to go on any public funded international trips must seek and obtain presidential approval at least two weeks before embarking on any such trip, which must be deemed absolutely necessary.
