The President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has accepted an invitation from President Bola Tinubu to visit Nigeria in 2025.

President Tinubu, who arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday as a guest of the UAE President to participate in the Sustainability Week, urged his counterpart to collaborate with Nigeria to strengthen its economy.

This was disclosed in a State House release on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

President Tinubu extended the invitation to Al Nahyan on Wednesday night during their bilateral talks at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi.

The Sustainability Week is a forum for exchanging ideas to support sustainable development globally and encourage collective action to address challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and energy crises.

Earlier on Wednesday, President Tinubu delivered Nigeria’s position on climate issues and other global challenges and congratulated the UAE leader on the successful hosting of the event.

During their discussions, Al Nahyan thanked the Nigerian leader for accepting his invitation and expressed the UAE’s determination to strengthen economic cooperation with Nigeria.

The two leaders also explored strategies to attract investment into Nigeria.

“President Tinubu said his government’s economic reforms are yielding results and called on the UAE to partner with Nigeria to further develop its economy,” the statement partly read.

He noted that Nigeria’s economic reforms have boosted foreign investor confidence, with international oil companies and other investors announcing billion-dollar investments, signifying renewed interest in doing business with Africa’s most populous nation.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; and National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, accompanied President Tinubu to the meeting.

Those who joined the UAE President included the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, among others.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Construction and Household Support Programme during the National Economic Council meeting on Thursday in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, the programme is aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening the economy, and providing immediate economic relief for Nigerian households.

Ngelale added that the programme, which was supported by the NEC, includes financial allocations and infrastructure projects across all geo-political zones in the country.

He added that a key component of the programme is the approval of the N50,000 uplift grant to be distributed to 100,000 families per state for three months.

He disclosed that the programme will also cater to infrastructure projects, including the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, which will traverse seven states and is considered key for agricultural sustainability. He added that the states along this axis form the food belt of the nation.

Other infrastructure initiatives include the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Trans-Saharan Highway. Tinubu also approved full counterpart financing for the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway and the Ibadan-Abuja segment of the Lagos-Kano Standard-Gauge Railway.

In addition to the projects, Ngelale said the NEC approved the allocation of N10 billion to each state and the Federal Capital Territory for the procurement of buses and implementation of the Compressed Natural Gas uplift programme.

According to the presidential spokesman, provisions were also made for labour unions and civil society organizations.

During the NEC meeting, Tinubu urged state governors to collaborate in meeting the needs of citizens and boosting food production in the country.

He said, “Our states must work together to deliver on the critical reforms required of us to meet the needs of our people. Time is humanity’s most precious asset. You can never have enough of it. It is getting late.

“We are ready and able to support you in the form of the mechanization of your agricultural processes and the provision of high-quality seedlings.

“We are prepared to provide solar-powered irrigation facilities to support our farmers across seasons, but we must now produce. We must produce the food our people eat, and it will require coordination and intentionality between members of the National Economic Council (NEC).

“There is nothing we are doing that is more important than producing high-quality food for our people to consume, buy, and sell. We create jobs in the production of it. And that is before we generate wealth by exporting the excess. It is not beyond us to achieve this for Nigerians.

“How much support do you need from me, and in what form? I am prepared to provide it. But we must achieve the result. We must deliver on our targets at all levels. Please report back following your consultations and submit to my office within seven days.”

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja after spending two weeks abroad.

According to reports, Tinubu arrived at his official residence at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, in the early hours of Wednesday.

In a tweet on Tuesday evening, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, revealed, “President Bola Tinubu, along with his aides, will return to Nigeria tomorrow from Europe.”

Two weeks ago, on April 23, 2024, the President departed Abuja for The Netherlands for a three-day official visit, honouring an invitation from the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte.

While in the Netherlands, he participated in the Nigerian-Dutch Business and Investment Forum, which brought together heads of conglomerates and organisations in both countries.

He also held separate meetings with His Royal Majesty, King Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima of the Kingdom.

As earlier announced by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu proceeded from The Netherlands to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to attend a World Economic Forum Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy for Development scheduled for April 28–29.

He joined over 1,000 leaders from business, government, and academia from more than 90 countries to review actions taken since the inaugural Growth Summit held in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2023.

It was his second visit to the Gulf state in five months.

After the summit, however, the President did not return to the country immediately.

Although no official statement was issued on the President’s further engagements, sources within the Presidency confirmed that he proceeded to London for a private visit and was billed to return last weekend.

Tinubu embarked on a similar private visit to London between June 24–28, 2023, where he met his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. He had attended the Paris Summit for the New Global Financial Pact days earlier.

His return on Wednesday concludes his 20th foreign trip since assuming office last May, logging 96 days abroad.

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in 17 Federal Commissioners of the National Population Commission, which he nominated last November.

The 17 new and returning commissioners took the oath of office in three batches of six, six, and five on Wednesday afternoon at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

On November 8, 2023, President Tinubu appointed 20 Federal Commissioners to the NPC, nine of whom were appointed for a second term in office.

A month later, on December 12, he forwarded the names of 19 of the 20 nominees to the Senate for confirmation.

However, only 17 appeared for the Senate’s screening on February 24, 2024, and were subsequently confirmed.

They include Emmanuel Eke (Abia); Clifford Zirra (Adamawa); Chidi Ezeoke (Anambra); Isa Buratal (Borno); Alex Ukam (Cross River); Blessyn Brume-Maguha (Delta) and Jeremiah Ogbonna Nwankwegu (Ebonyi).

Others are Tony Alyejina (Edo); Ejike Ezeh (Enugu); Abubakar Damburam (Gombe); Uba Nnabue (Imo); Sa’adatu Garba (Kaduna); Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa (Kano); Yori Afolabii (Kogi); Mary Afan (Plateau); Saany Sale (Taraba) and Ogiri Henry (Rivers).

Two nominees, Olakunle Sobukola (Ogun) and Temitayo Oluwatiyi (Ondo) were not screened as they did not appear before the Committee.

That day, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Population, the recently suspended Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central, PDP), explained that Sobukola and Oluwatiyi were absent because of “recent political developments in their states”.

After observing a minute’s silence in honour of a former Minister of State for Health, Gabriel Aduku, the Federal Executive Council proceeded into its ninth meeting in the administration.

Wigwe died in a helicopter crash in California near the Nevada border, United States of America, on Friday. United States Authorities revealed that preliminary reports suggested the crash was caused by rain and wintry weather.

On Sunday, Access Holdings Plc confirmed the accident and those killed in the helicopter accident.

In thesame vein, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed grief over the death of the Chief Executive Officer, Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe, who died along with his wife and son in a helicopter crash.

In a condolence statement on Sunday via X, Sanwo-Olu described Wigwe as “one of the brightest minds in Africa” and a “visionary leader” who made unparalleled contributions to banking and the financial sector.

“Herbert was not just a brother and visionary leader but one of the brightest minds in Africa. His impact on our nation and beyond will be remembered forever. My heart mourns,” the governor said.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Wigwe was an “unapologetic believer in the Nigerian solution” whose dedication and passion for progress inspired many.

“Today, we mourn not just a leader but a true friend and brother. Lagos and Nigeria have lost a remarkable soul. Rest in peace, my brother,” he added.

The governor also mourned the passing of former Nigerian Exchange Group Chairman, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, describing him as a “great business leader and legal luminary who contributed significantly to the development of the Capital Markets and Corporate law.”

Otedola also revealed how the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe, hosted him and fellow business man, Aliko Dangote, in his new house two weeks before his death.

In a related development, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed shock at the news of the death of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, his son, and others in a helicopter crash in California near the Nevada border, United States.

Wigwe hailed from Rivers State.

The governor described the incident as a “monumental disaster.”

He said Rivers State and Nigeria were in tears over the development.

This was contained in a statement on Sunday by the governor’s media aide, Boniface Onyedi.

Fubara, on behalf of his family, the state government, and the people of the state, commiserated with the Wigwe family over the incident.

He urged them to be comforted by God’s assurances of His love.

The governor said there were no words to convey how terrible the losses are, and the state and indeed Nigeria will miss “an unassuming, iconic, and accomplished illustrious son of Isiokpo in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.”

He stated, “Rivers State and the nation are in tears because it would be extremely difficult to understand this sweeping loss of a family involving a strong pillar, accomplished banker and philanthropist with tentacles in the education sector.”

Fubara said the Wigwe University, which the deceased pioneered, must not be allowed to die.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent his Christmas message to the citizens of Nigeria.

The President said, every virtue of life should be considered during and after the celebration, for better coexistence.

Below here is the speech of the first citizen of Nigeria :

Fellow Nigerians,

Christmas is a special time of the year for all of us. For Christians, this time of the year marks the birth of Jesus Christ and celebrates the hope and redemption that are the hallmarks of Christ’s life.

For people of all faiths, this is an opportunity to enjoy the company of family, celebrate life, and delight in the gifts of love and friendship that make life worthwhile.

This is also a time to look out for each other because, amidst the festivities, this time of year for many will be tinged with sadness: some mourning the loss of loved ones and others grieving the hopes that failed to materialise and the dreams that fell short.

In the spirit of Christmas, reflecting the best of Christ, let us all endeavour to extend the warm embrace of kindness to those around us who need it and let the multiple acts of kindness serve as a light that guides us into a happy and wonderful new year.

This year has been a time of transformation and relentless change in our country. And I am aware that the necessary reforms we are implementing to achieve a more prosperous, peaceful nation for all have imposed unique sacrifices.

My administration will continue to implement palliative measures to ease the burden on the most vulnerable, address current hardships and alleviate the suffering of all our nation’s people.

Fellow Nigerians, as we navigate this transition to stability, prosperity, and Renewed Hope, I urge you once more to hold fast and rest assured of my commitment to govern with vision, dedication, and empathy.

Be confident that by the strength of our joint endeavour, we will shortly emerge into a new dawn of prosperity, peace, and irreversible progress.

As you celebrate this season, please spare a moment of remembrance and prayer for the men and women of our nation’s armed forces, bearing arms in our names and ensuring our safety. My God protect them and bring them back to their families.

And let us together commemorate the memory of those who, in their service, have paid the highest price for our nation. May God bless their souls and comfort their families and loved ones.

Let the light of Christmas guide our paths as we bring this year to a close and usher in the new year.

I wish you all a merry Christmas.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, revealed that he would be offering serious prayers for the Bola Tinubu-led administration during his time of seclusion at the forthcoming Olojo festival.

The monarch also said he would pray for a turnaround of the current hardship experienced in the country as occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and other factors.

Ooni made the call while speaking with newsmen in his palace on Sunday in preparation for seclusion as part of the Olojo rites.

He said, “I will use the medium to pray for African Unity and movement, for actualisation of Pan Africanism. We therefore as stakeholders must play our roles to ensure that Africa as a continent speaks in unity,” he stated.

Ooni emphasised that Nigeria needs spiritual intervention at this time of economic downturn, adding that he would utilise this period to pray for a way out of seclusion.

I will pray for the unity of Africa. Things are very hard. We all know the economic challenges that people are facing.

“This is the time we need spiritual and divine intervention. My annual Olojo seclusion. This is how my ancestors have been doing it.

”We should pray very well because things are very hard. We all know the state of the economy. It is a sensitive thing that needs prayer which should not go out of hand.

“My prayer also would be to pray for divine intervention for the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to turn things right because expectation of people is so high”, the Ooni stated.

Also, he called on stakeholders in Africa to prioritise the unity of the African continent, saying pan-Africanism is non-negotiable.

He said, “Pan African movement is not negotiable as this is a way out for us in Africa, for the unity of the African continent as this must be paramount to all of us”.

The royal father explained that everywhere is so tense now and people are not finding life easy, but he would use the seclusion period to pray for the leaders.

Ooni said Olojo is an annual festival, stressing that there’s nothing he asked for, for 8 years which could not be answered. “I talked to my creator and my ancestors and they answered me speedily.”

Oba Ogunwusi called for support for the president to move the nation forward.

Olojo festival is the biggest festival on the culture calendar of Ile-Ife.

The Olojo (controller of time-Death) festival is celebrated in remembrance of Ogun, the god of iron who is believed to be the first son of Oduduwa as well as the creation of the world according to Yoruba mythology. The festival takes place annually in October and involves several elaborate ritual prayers led by the Ooni.

It is marked by a carnival-like atmosphere and is attended by people of all ages.

Olojo has remained popular in Ile-Ife because it is the only day in the year believed to be specially blessed by Olodumare (the Creator of the Universe)

President Bola Tinubu will on Monday depart Abuja for New Delhi, India, to attend the G-20 Leaders’ summit.

Tinubu is attending the two-day summit on the special invitation of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, read on Sunday.

In the statement titled ‘President Tinubu set to attend G-20 Summit in India with investment attraction topping Nigeria’s agenda,’ Ngelale revealed that the President aims to leverage the platform to attract global capital and promote increased foreign direct investments in key labour-intensive sectors of Nigeria’s economy for job creation and revenue expansion.

“He will use this opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s attractiveness as an investment destination, specifically outlining his cross-sectoral reform plan as encapsulated by the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Given the President’s renowned experience in attracting investment to Lagos State, leading industrialists have sought separate private engagements with him at the summit,” it read in part.

On the sidelines of the Summit, President Tinubu will participate in and deliver keynote addresses at both the Nigeria-India Presidential Roundtable and the Nigeria-India Business Conference.

The CEO Roundtable will be attended by leading industrialists in the Indian private sector, Nigerian industrialists, as well as senior government officials from both countries.
His itinerary will also feature bilateral meetings with a cross-section of world leaders from four different continents, representing both G-20 and non–G20 countries.

“These engagements are geared towards strengthening bilateral economic, trade, and investment partnerships for mutual benefit,” said Ngelale.

At the G20 summit, the Nigerian leader is expected to share Nigeria’s perspective on the theme, “One Earth-One Family-One Future,” which speaks to the global unity required to address the challenges facing humanity and the planet.

Although Nigeria is not yet a member of the G-20 bloc founded in September 1999, the Presidential aide said Tinubu’s participation at the Summit is, in part, in furtherance of his objective to make the country a member of the bloc.
He noted that while Nigeria’s membership of the bloc is desirable, the Tinubu-led government has embarked on wide-ranging consultations to ascertain the benefits and risks of membership.

“This is consistent with the desire of the President to democratise foreign policy and articulate policy formulation and implementation through a Whole-of-Society and a Whole-of-Government approach that achieves the nation’s long-term strategic objectives.”

President Tinubu at the G-20 Summit in India is, in part, in furtherance of this objective.
“Once consultations are concluded, the government will decide whether or not to apply to join as appropriate,” he adds.

Describing the bloc as a significant economic power alliance of socio-economic opportunity and geo-political stability, he noted that G-20 member states collectively contribute up to 80 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of international trade, and houses 60 per cent of the world’s population.

Accompanying President Tinubu on the mission are the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite.

India becomes Tinubu’s sixth foreign destination and first in Asia since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

So far, he has visited Benin Republic, France, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya and the UK.

With an expected duration of six days in New Delhi, Tinubu would be spending 19 days out of the country so far.

He is billed to return to Nigeria immediately after the conclusion of the summit.

President Bola Tinubu and industry stakeholders have taken a definitive stance, asserting that the existing fuel pricing structure will remain unchanged.

Ajuri Ngelele, the spokesperson for President Tinubu, said stakeholders were proactively tackling inefficiencies, that seek to pre-empt the need for a price increase while also fostering a level playing field for all market participants.

President Tinubu himself has personally reaffirmed this commitment, ensuring that there will be no increase in the price of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) across the country, Mr Ngelele said in a video briefing.

He said figures from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have underscored the determination of the federal government to maintain prevailing fuel prices, showcasing commitment to deregulation and efficient resource management, he added.

The NNPC said on Monday that it has no intention to increase the pump price of petrol.

Sincerity of purpose by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other Nigeria leaders would go a long way in addressing Nigeria’s present economic, security and social challenges.

To this end, the ultimate goal to achieve economic growth is to explore the principles and strategies that can be employed to promote good governance and foster economic recovery and growth in challenging times.

This formed part of the opinions of the stakeholders at a public lecture organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zone B, in Osogbo, Osun State.

Speaking on the topic “Enhancing Good Governance in a Beleaguered Economy“, the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Nigerians Communications Commission, NCC, Professor Adeolu Akande, said in the face of economic crises and uncertainty, the role of effective governance becomes paramount in guiding a nation towards stability, prosperity, and sustainable growth.

Professor Akande represented by Dr. Idowu Johnson, described good governance as the foundation upon which a successful and resilient economy is built as well as ensures that decision-making processes are fair, just, and reflect the interests of all citizens.

In his remark, the Vice President of NUJ Zone B, Comrade Aderonke Afebioye -Samo said removal of subsidy is good but government own Nigerians a duty to ameliorate the suffering of the people.

She said good governance is a fundamental to Economic growth, political stability and development adding that good governance encourages responsiveness to the yearning and aspiration of the people during trying times .

Opinion

It is incontrovertible that the performance of President Tinubu has beaten the imagination of his close associates and other poles apart within a short interval since his inauguration on 29th May, 2023.

Obviously, steps and decisions so far taken indicate that BAT prepared himself for the plum job compared to most of his predecessors who once occupied Aso Rock.

Despite stiff challenges and opposition on all fronts, the President has hit the ground running, focused, assertive, fair, effective and decisive.

So far, the BAT’s presidency has in less than two months posted some scorecards, which include appointment of key aides including service chiefs with national spread, though there are feelings in some quarters that the appointments tilted more towards Yoruba, compared to other sections of the country, as was the case with the last administration.

Like Tsunami, Mr President gave the boot to Godwin Emefiele, the CBN governor, Ibrahim Bawa, the controversial EFCC Chairman and MDAs Boards that shaped the policies of the former administration.

Also noteworthy was the immediate signing students’ loan bill into law as well as four Executive Orders that overturned the prevailing anti-people’s policies, roadmap on economic policy and revival.

He has equally within the time frame held meeting with the representatives of Monarchs across the nation, parleyed with JOHESU, NLC and opposition leaders.

His election as Chairman of ECOWAS Heads of States/Governments at his first attendance could be described as a plus less than two months into his presidency.

However, there are issues which President Tinubu has inappropriately handled or has not adequately responded to. First was the abrupt removal of oil subsidy without providing any cushion for the masses resulting in general economic hardship.

Though the Students’ Loan Bill is a welcome development, it may not be appropriated by indigent students because of its stringent conditions while also the upward review of school fees by higher institutions looms in the country.

Deadly terror attacks has been recorded in Benue State, Plateau State, Southern Kaduna and some other places, and Nigerians await swift response from the President, who have also kept mute over alleged provocative utterance by former Gov. El-Rufai’s, which could inflame religious tension, though the Kaduna ex-governor has eventually said he was quoted out of context.

Nigerians want a clean departure from the immediate past administration, and are waiting to see if BAT will reverse questionable appointments made by the former president or his lieutenants at the eve of their exit, and the president has been silent on media speculation that he intends to appoint certain controversial and discredited individuals into his cabinet.

While the President mulls possibility of a unity government, suspicion is rife among the opposition political parties that they may soon lose their voice on the assumption that the nation may become a one-party state in the new dispensation.

This fear could be premised on past records.

By and large, Tinubu’s Presidency has lots of prospects if the current tempo is maintained and sustained. Concisely, the nation will like to see an administration immensely bringing its weight to bear on areas such as the  sanctity of human life, rule of law, fiscal federalism, discipline and sanity of MDAs and state apparatus, discontinuation of selective justice, discontinuation of political interference on high profile cases, bridging North/South suspicion and dichotomy, prudent management of oil and other mineral resources better, massive job creation, foreign investment, and infrastructure leap, with a view to reducing JAPA syndrome, efficient public service devoid of bottlenecks and undue bureaucracy, with reduction in the cost of governance.

And not the least, Nigerians want to sleep with their two eyes closed, hence Mr President should prioritise reorganizing the armed forces; pursuit of enhanced synergy among security agencies under a strong West African regional block could turn the tide in this direction as some countries in the block are plagued by extremists and other non-state actors.

BAT has no god-father, will this count for his being able to take decisive actions on matters of public interest without minding stepping on toes?

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, has disclosed that the average daily consumption of fuel in Nigeria has fallen by no fewer than 28 percent since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the scrapping of fuel subsidies.

According to new figures released to Reuters by NMDPRA, the average daily petrol consumption fell to 48.43 million liters (13 million gallons) in June, as against the previous average of 66.9 million.

The fuel regulatory industry added that since the scrapping of the subsidy, neighboring countries like Cameroon, Benin, and Togo, which relied on petrol smuggled out of Nigeria, have experienced a collapse in their black market.

It will be recalled that President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidies, which had kept petrol prices low for decades, during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

In his democracy day speech, June 12, the President admitted the decision to remove fuel subsidies would impose an extra burden on the masses, but appealed to the good people of the country to bear the brunt of the decision as it will “save our country from going under.

The removal of the fuel subsidy, which tripled the price of petrol, has affected virtually every part of the economy, leading to an increase in the prices of goods and services across the country.

According to the World Bank in June, despite having spent $2.41 billion on the subsidy in the first five months, Nigeria could save up to $5.10 billion this year from the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange reforms.

The Nigerian government spent no less than $10 billion (£7.8 billion) on the subsidy last year.

President Bola Tinubu has promised to respect the dictates of the Nigerian Constitution and as well compensate citizens for their sacrifice arising from subsidy removal.

Mr President stated this on Monday during his address to the nation in commemoration of June 12, also known as Democracy Day.

Below is the full text of the speech.

TEXT OF DEMOCRACY DAY NATIONAL BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON JUNE 12, 2023.

Fellow Nigerians,

2. It is exactly three decades today that Nigerians went to the polls to exercise their inalienable right to elect a President of their choice to lead the transition from military dictatorship to a representative government of the people.

3. The abortion, by military fiat, of the decisive victory of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, up to that time, the fairest and freest election in the country’s political evolution, turned out, ironically, to be the seed that germinated into the prolonged struggle that gave birth to the democracy we currently enjoy since 1999.

4. In rising to strongly oppose the arbitrary annulment of the will of the majority of Nigerians as expressed in that historic election, the substantial number of our people who participated in the struggle to de-annul the election signified their fierce commitment to enthroning democracy as a form of government that best ennobles the liberty, the dignity of the individual and the integrity as well as the stability of the polity. The fierce opposition to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the unrelenting pro-democracy onslaught it unleashed was the equivalent of the battle against colonial rule by our founding fathers that resulted in the gaining of Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

5. Just like the anti-colonial movement, the pro-June 12 vanguard demonstrated, once again, the enduring validity of the 19th century historian, Arnold Toynbee’s eternal postulation, that civilization and societies experience progress as they are forced to respond to challenges posed by the environment. The unjust annulment of a widely acknowledged free and fair election was a challenge that elicited resistance by a resurgent civil society, leading ultimately to the attainment of our ‘second independence’ as exemplified by the return of democratic governance in 1999.

6. Fellow compatriots, we celebrate a day that has remained a watershed in our nation’s history, not just today, but for every June 12, for the endless future that our beloved country shall exist and wax stronger and stronger, generations of Nigerians will always remind themselves that the democracy that is steadily growing to become the defining essence of our polity was not gifted to us on a silver platter.

7. We can easily recall the sacrifice and martyrdom of Chief MKO Abiola, the custodian of the sacred mandate that was so cruelly annulled. He sacrificed his life in unyielding, patriotic defense of the ideals of democracy as symbolized in his choice, by his fellow countrymen and women, as their duly-elected President. There was an easier choice for him. It was to forgo the justice of his cause and opt for the path of ease and capitulation in the face of the tyranny of power. To his eternal credit and immortal glory, Abiola said no. He demonstrated the time-tested eternal truth that there are certain ideals and principles that are far more valuable than life itself.

8. Everyday, on this day, down the ages we will recall the several other heroes of democracy such as Kudirat Abiola, wife of Chief Abiola, who was brutally murdered while in the trenches fighting on the side of the people. We remember Pa Alfred Rewane, one of the heroes of our independence struggle and Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (rtd) who were silenced by the military junta while in pursuit of democracy. They gave their yesterday for the liberty that is ours today.

9. The point is that we must never take this democracy for granted. We must forever jealously guard and protect it like a precious jewel. For, a people can never truly appreciate the freedoms and rights democracy guarantees them until they lose it

10. We have traversed the dark, thorny path of dictatorship before and those who experienced it can readily testify to the unbridgeable gap between the dignity of freedom and the humiliation and degradation of tyranny. True, rancorous debates, interminable wrangling, ceaseless quarrels, bitter electoral contestations may be perceived by some as unattractive features of democracy. But they also testify to its merit and value.

11. This year, we held the seventh in the cycle of elections that have become sacred rituals of our democratic practice in this dispensation since 1999.

12. That the polls were intensely contested is in itself positive evidence that democracy is well and alive in our land. It is only natural that even as those who won and experienced victory in the various elections are elated and fulfilled, those who lost are disenchanted and disappointed. But the beauty of democracy is that those who win today can lose tomorrow and those who lose today will have an opportunity to compete and win in the next round of elections.

13. Those who cannot endure and accept the pain of defeat in elections do not deserve the joy of victory when it is their turn to triumph. Above all, those who disagree with the outcome of the elections are taking full advantage of the constitutional provisions to seek redress in court and that is one of the reasons why democracy is still the best form of government invented by man.

14. For Chief MKO Abiola, the symbol of this day, in whose memory June 12 became a national holiday, democracy is eternal.

15. It is about rule of law and vibrant judiciary that can be trusted to deliver justice and strengthen institutions. It has become imperative to state here that the unnecessary illegal orders used to truncate or abridge democracy will no longer be tolerated.

16. The recent harmonization of the retirement age for judicial officers is meant to strengthen the rule of law, which is a critical pillar of democracy. The reform has just started.

17. The democracy that will yield right dividends to the people who are the shareholders means more than just freedom of choice and right to get people into elective offices. It means social and economic justice for our people. To the winner of June 12, democracy offers the best chance to fight and eliminate poverty. Thirty years ago, he christened his campaign manifesto, ‘Farewell to Poverty’ because he was convinced that there is nothing divine about poverty. It is a man-made problem that can be eliminated with clearly thought out social and economic policies.

18. It is for this reason that, in my inauguration address on May 29, I gave effect to the decision taken by my predecessor-in-office to remove the fuel subsidy albatross and free up for collective use the much-needed resources, which had hitherto been pocketed by a few rich. I admit that the decision will impose extra burden on the masses of our people. I feel your pain. This is one decision we must bear to save our country from going under and take our resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic elements.

19. Painfully, I have asked you, my compatriots, to sacrifice a little more for the survival of our country. For your trust and belief in us, I assure you that your sacrifice shall not be in vain. The government I lead will repay you through massive investment in transportation infrastructure, education, regular power supply, healthcare and other public utilities that will improve the quality of lives.

20. The democracy MKO Abiola died for is one that promotes the welfare of the people over personal interests of the ruling class and one where the governed can find personal fulfillment and happiness. That is the hope MKO Abiola ignited throughout our country in 1993.

21. On this year’s Democracy Day, I enjoin us all to rededicate ourselves to strengthening this form of government of free peoples that has been our guiding light these past 24 years. In particular, those of us who have been privileged to be elected into public offices at various levels in both the executive and legislative arms of government must recommit ourselves to offering selfless service to the people, and delivering concrete democracy dividends in accordance with our electoral promises.

22. On my part and that of my administration, I pledge anew our commitment to diligently fulfilling every component of our electoral pact with the people – the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.

23. We shall be faithful to truth. Faithful to equity. And faithful to justice. We shall exercise our authority and mandate to govern with fairness, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to always uphold the dignity of all our people.

24. On this note, I wish us all a happy Democracy Day celebration and pray that the light of liberty shall never be extinguished in our land.

25. Thank you all and may God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
