According to the governor, all PDP leaders and stakeholders from across the six South-West states are behind the Ondo PDP candidate.

“So, for us, people should expect a very strong showing from the PDP in Ondo State in November by the grace of God.

Oyo State Government has warned residents of the state to ignore a news trending on social media about Governor ‘Seyi Makinde approving the sum of N20,000 as 2024 Ramadan Support Fund.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Suleiman Olanrewaju, urges residents to be wary of fraudsters, noting that the report did not emanate from any arm of the government and is without any basis.

The report, which is being circulated on social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp, claimed that Governor Makinde approved the fund due to high level of inflation, economic hardship and high cost of feeding.

According to the report, the sum of N20,000 was approved to ease some of the financial burdens that individuals may face during Ramadan, urging people to apply on a particular strange website.

But the state government declared that the governor did not approve such fund and that the state would never do any such thing in obscurity, as Governor Makinde’s administration has been known for transparency and openness.

It warns unsuspecting members of the public not to fall into the hands of unscrupulous elements seeking to profit from the current economic situation in the country.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Oyo State Government has been drawn to a trending piece of fake news that Governor Makinde has approved N20,000 Ramadan 2024 Support Fund.

“The purveyors of the said fake news also put up a strange website where they urged residents to apply for the bogus fund.

“Please note that there is no ongoing N20,000 Ramadan Support Fund and that the piece of news did not originate from Oyo State Government.

“Governor Makinde has been running an open and transparent government and whatever intervention the government deems fit to add to already-existing measures to cushion the effects of economic hardship on residents of the state will not be done in obscurity. All residents of the state will be informed through the official channels of information and not some fraudulent but widely circulated piece of news like the one on the Ramadan Support Fund.

“Kindly be cautious so as not to fall into the hands of fraudsters seeking to rip off unsuspecting people of their hard-earned resources.”

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says the traditional institution remains important to the socioeconomic development of the country, pointing out that Obas should be integrated into all efforts by states to develop the society.

He stated this while delivering a lecture entitled “The Role of traditional institutions in Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria” during the 70th birthday anniversary and 17th Coronation Anniversary of Oba Dr Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, CFR, held at the Oba Adesanoye Civic Centre, Ondo, Ondo State.

Governor Makinde maintained that the traditional rulers contribute towards securing the society and ensuring peaceful trade relations and are an integral part of development in the state.

He noted, however, that for the traditional institutions to be able to make these contributions, they must be integrated into the existing structure of the nation-state, adding that the concept of homegrown democracy came from the recognition of the traditional institutions

According to the governor, the Nigerian society must return to the drawing board to study how the traditional institution was able to contribute to the society and apply the same principles towards achieving peace, security and economic prosperity for the current society.

The governor, who was later installed as the Jagunmolu of Ondo Kingdom at the Osemawe palace, congratulated Oba Kiladejo on his 70th birthday and 17th coronation anniversary, stating that Ondo Kingdom had witnessed unprecedented developments under his reign.

He said: “I am an advocate for strong traditional institutions. I believe that when traditional institutions are strong, they promote a value-driven society. And it is in the entrenching of these values that we achieve socioeconomic development.”

He added, “I will be highlighting three ways that traditional institutions contribute to socioeconomic development. These are: Contributing to security through community policing; maintaining peaceful trade relations and keying into the development architecture of the State.

“Of course, this is only possible when the traditional system is integrated into the State structure.

“So, I am also making a case for this integration. If these systems work well, why do we need additional bureaucracy for a federal-operated local government architecture? Each State can now determine what local authorities they want to run and how they should run. I know this is not a very popular stand I am taking. We must discuss these reforms and chart a new course for our nation.”

The governor equally expatiated on the role Obas play in socioeconomic development by highlighting the key roles they play in peaceful trade relations among communities, noting that the State can learn to leverage the traditional rulers’ knowledge and coordination of market associations to widen the tax net and increase internally generated revenues.

In a remark, the Osemawe commended Governor Makinde for the insightful lecture, stating that his recommendations were apt and well-accepted.

The governor’s entourage included his wife, Engr (Mrs) Tamunominini Makinde; former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engr Hamid Gbadamosi; former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Senator Monsura Sunmonu; chairmen of the Oyo State Elders’ Council and Oyo State Advisory Council, Dr Saka Balogun and Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN.

The kingmakers in Oyo town, otherwise known as the Oyomesi in Council, have dragged Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to court over the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo.

The suit marked HOY/38/2023 before the Oyo State High Court in Oyo has as claimants five kingmakers, seeking a court injunction to restrain the governor and his agents “from aborting the process for the selection/appointment of the candidate for filling the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo duly conducted by the kingmakers of Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy.”

The kingmakers who filed the suit are the Bashorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Layinka; Lagunna of Oyo, High Chief Wakeel Oyedepo; Akinniku of Oyo, High Chief Amusa Yusuf; Areago Bashorun, Chief Wahab Oyetunji; and the Alapo of Oyo, Chief Gbadebo Mufutau.

Apart from Makinde, also listed as defendants in the suit are the Oyo State Attorney General; and the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The kingmakers explained that they had at a meeting on September 30, 2023, unanimously selected Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin as the next Alaafin of Oyo to fill the ancient stool, which has become vacant since April last year, following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who was the 45th Alaafin of Oyo.

The kingmakers are praying the court to restrain the Oyo State Governor and his agents from nullifying the choice of Gbadegesin and “approving or recognising any other candidate” as the next Alaafin “after a duly conducted process for the filling of the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo in accordance with the native law, custom and Chieftaincy Declaration of Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy.”

The kingmakers also want the court to restrain the governor and the other defendants from removing them as Oyo kingmakers or “dissolving the Oyomesi in Council or appointing or selecting warrant chiefs to conduct or start a fresh process for the filling of the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo.”

They want the court to stop the defendants from “harassing, disturbing, preventing or stopping the claimants from carrying on their traditional functions and responsibilities as kingmakers of Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy.”

It was reported that some of the Oyo kingmakers were on October 18 grilled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over allegations of bribery in relation to the selection of the next Alaafin.

It was gathered that the petitioner alleged that the kingmakers collected bribes running into millions of naira to favour a particular candidate, hence the decision of EFCC to summon them for questioning.

It was learnt that the kingmakers who honoured the EFCC invitation were accompanied by their lawyers and were asked to write statements, after which they were allowed to go.

The Samu of Oyo town, High Chief Lamidi Oyewale, confirmed to  newsmen the invitation by the EFCC, saying, “Yes, we were invited. We have gone and come back.”

There is no hearing date yet for the fresh suit filed by the kingmakers.

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the Ibadan Dry Port Project may likely come on stream quicker than expected because the present leadership of the country under President Bola Tinubu, understands the benefits of developing the economic value chain.

He said that the dry port project would also benefit hugely because his administration would collaborate with the Federal Government more than ever before, stating that the recent change of government at the federal level would not affect the project negatively.

Governor Makinde stated this when he inspected several ongoing projects, including the Ibadan Inland Dry Port, the College of Agriculture and Renewable Energy, Iseyin, a campus of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso; the Engr. Lere Adigun Housing Estate, Basorun and the Ibadan Circular Road.

According to the governor, the state has made good progress with regards to the projects, though there is still a lot of work to be done.

He equally noted that his administration had been creating wonderful opportunities through infrastructure building and other key developments, which have begun to attract investors.

The governor, therefore, urged the youth to key into the opportunities by contributing and getting the rewards, rather than leaving the country for foreign lands in search of imaginary greener pastures.

Governor Makinde, while responding to a question on how the change of government at the federal level might stall the Ibadan Inland Dry Port project, reassured residents of the state the project would come on stream quicker than expected.

He said: “I think the change of government is even positive for Oyo State because we have a new administration at the federal level that understands what it is to develop the economic value chain. The governor, who appreciated the Muslim community in Oyo State for standing by his administration during Omituntun 1.0, promised to roll out the names of some new appointees very soon.

He said, “First, I want to thank the Almighty for keeping all of us up until this moment; for us to witness another Sallah.

“About three months ago, we were all still out there campaigning and some people tried to sow the seed of division by introducing religion into the politics in Oyo State. But thankfully, they failed as our people did not listen to them, and we have a united Oyo State.

“We are all here celebrating another Sallah. So, I use this opportunity to greet my brothers and sisters of the Islamic faith for standing by this administration and also to wish them many more Sallah.”

While appreciating members of his cabinet for their contributions to the success of his administration during the first term, the governor implored everyone to play their part to make Oyo State better and more united.

He said further: “Our people are expectant and they want us to move as fast as possible and we have started. The House of Assembly, on Tuesday, cleared some of our commissioner-nominees.

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde says trade-offs and alignment will be his operating principles to achieve sustainable development in the state.

The governor, who stated this in a newsletter dated 15th of June, 2023, said that meaningful development and advancement would be a mirage without unity, especially among political stakeholders.

He equally identified equity, fairness and justice as essential elements to achieve good governance which he said would remain the watchword of his administration.

Governor Makinde, however, urged young politicians who wish to go far in politics to shun hostility and enmity but embrace alignment when necessary.

He said: “Many people still think, in 2023, opposition politics is about hostility and perpetual enmity. It is not. This is one lesson that young people who really want to go far in politics should learn quickly.”

He added, “After years of contesting and losing elections, I realised that politics is a game of principles and deep interests. I also learnt that politics is about trade-offs. But again, trade-offs should be based on principles.

“You gain followership when people know what your principles are. In a country such as Nigeria, where political parties are not yet set on proven ideologies, it is these principles that will determine political trade-offs and alignments.

“For me, those principles are equity, fairness and justice. My support will go to anyone who subscribes to those principles. It really does not matter whose ox is gored.

“We cannot advance in disunity. Trade-offs lead to progress. And so, this will continue to be our operating principle in Oyo State as we march towards sustainable development.”

While hinting that necessary consultation was ongoing on the composition of a new cabinet, he noted that capable hands among his former aides would be engaged to continue their service to the state.

“Of course, I have also been busy consulting widely to ensure that I keep to my promise of having a cabinet in place within the next two months. I ask for your support and prayers as I make the necessary decisions to move our dear state forward.

“As I have previously stated, those who served Oyo State well under Omituntun 1.0 will get a chance to continue their good work,” the governor said.

The governor also promised to enact more policies that would make Oyo State the preferred destination for private-sector investment.
