He praised the progress made so far, including the installation of drainage systems, sidewalks, solar-powered streetlights, electricity, and water systems.

The governor commended the Commissioner for Housing and his team for their hard work, saying: “A vision without an effective team cannot be realized. Fortunately, our team has worked diligently to bring our vision to life, and the results are evident.”

At the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along Kobape Road, the governor explained that the project was inherited from the previous administration and initially faced legal disputes.

He explained that government resolved these issues out of court to ensure the project’s continuation and described the estate as a noble initiative to provide quality housing in a prime location in Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of continuity in governance, saying: “I looked beyond personalities and focused on the collective interest of the state. This estate represents a significant investment in the welfare of our people, and I am pleased that we have transformed it into a first-class residential community.”

Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Akande Omoniyi, explained that the Ibara GRA renewal project aims to modernize the estate, which was originally built in 1976.

He said four clusters were currently active, with the first phase of 200 duplexes set for commissioning in the next two months while additional units will be ready by December.

Ogun state government has restated its determination to continue to initiate programmes and policies, especially in the area of land that will attract more investments and make the state an investor hub for Nigeria.

Governor Dapo Abiodun gave the assurance in Abeokuta during the distribution of Certificates of Occupancy to five thousand beneficiaries under the Ogun State Land Administration and Revenue Management System.

Governor Abiodun who was represented by the Secretary to State government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi said the present administration had embarked on various steps to ensure that the process of land business in Ogun state was transformed.

He said the government was working hard to conclude the distribution of the outstanding certificates of occupancy before the first quarters of 2024.

In separate remarks, Commissioner for Physical Planning, Mr Tunji Odulami and his Housing ministry counterpart, Jagunmolu Jamiu Omoniyi, said the distribution of CofO to 5,000 people was an indication that the present administration was taking the bull by the horns to address the delay in the distribution of the documents.

Earlier, the Director General, Bureau of Lands and Survey, Otunba Segun Fowora, noted that the introduction of the Ogun State Land Administration and Revenue Management System by the present administration was to speed the process of land administration and make it seamless, maintaining that the Bureau of Lands would continue to implement the governor’s vision on land matters.

One of the recipients and former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ayilara Adedoyin, lauded the state government for the initiative, noting that it would help legitimize their properties and give them peace of mind.

A former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has given reasons why the rent-to-own scheme must be further improved upon by the government and stakeholders as part of efforts to reduce the number of homeless persons in the country.

He gave the recommendation on Thursday while delivering his keynote address at the ongoing 50th-anniversary celebration of the Federal Housing Authority on Thursday in Abuja.

According to the former minister, financial capacity is a hindrance for most persons to purchase homes outright.

As a result, the Federal and state governments must expand rent-to-own programmes.

He said, “Homelessness is the most undignifying experience for a human being and must be confronted with the necessary resolve by political leaders and policymakers. The sad but painful truth is that not everybody will be able to afford to buy a house; but I strongly believe that rental housing for all is possible, not only based on how we build but also how people pay rent.

“Therefore, our housing policy must focus on rental as it focuses on ownership. Consequently, rent-to-own initiatives that started in the last administration must not be allowed to die.

“Instead, there is scope in my view for improvement in expanding rent-to-own schemes at Federal and State levels, and also increasing advocacy for state legislators to make laws that make the payment of rent convenient and convergent with wages and salaries.”

Fashola, speaking on the theme, “The future of housing in Nigeria and 50 years of FHA: A call to action for political leaders and policymakers from decent and affordable housing”, also called for increasing advocacy for state legislators to make laws that make the payment of rent convenient and convergent with wages and salaries.

He emphasised the need for the nation’s housing policy to be oriented toward rental housing and the Federal Housing Authority must be cognisant of this adding that the 50th anniversary celebration must birth evolve new methods of home ownership.

The former Lagos State Governor further gave suggestions on financing, housing types, affordability, people participation, and maintenance with a charge that, “Federal Housing Authority must become a proper business run on very strict corporate governance principles that conform with global best practice and this will be consistent with previous attempts to commercialise or privatise the authority.

He said, “Federal Housing Authority should recognise that the market demand is probably dominated by those in the age bracket of around 25 to 35 years and it would be helpful for Federal Housing Authority to conduct a highly professional survey of what their needs are before designing and building.

“The other survey that I would advocate is the payment mode that this category of potential buyers will opt for and to urge Federal Housing Authority to factor in digital platforms for advertising, sale, and payment because this is the language of this class of buyers. If Federal Housing Authority expects these class of buyers to come to their offices to come and collect forms to buy houses and go through some of the ancient red tape that time has tied away for Federal Housing Authority, then there is a risk to success.”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has approved a three-month grace period for owners of 189 undeveloped plots of land in the FCT to begin to develop them or get their allocation papers revoked.

The Director of Information and Communication at the FCT Administration, Mr Muhammad Sule, stated on Sunday in Abuja that the affected titled holders had obtained building plan approvals, but were yet to develop the properties.

He stated that the affected property owners were expected to develop the property within the stipulated period or have their title documents revoked in line with extant laws.

The grace period, he explained, applied to individuals and to corporate organisations that had showed the desire to develop their property by obtaining building plan approvals.

He added that public institutions that had land titles within the FCT but yet to develop same were also advised to do so within the three months grace period to avoid the sanction.

“The minister has extended this gesture to 189 property owners due to their desire to develop the properties by obtaining building plan approvals, a prerequisite for the development of any property in the FCT.

“Owners of the plots were exempted from revocation because they had already demonstrated firm commitment to develop their property by obtaining necessary documents from the FCT Administration.

“The minister is urging the affected property owners to take advantage of the gesture and develop their plots in line with the terms of their offer of Right-of-Occupancy,’’ Sule stated.

The director added that the FCT Administration equally appealed to public institutions that had been allocated land to begin the development of their plots, failing which their title documents would be revoked.
