The drive towards achieving a health insurance system that works for all Nigerians gained fresh momentum in Oyo State as the National Health Insurance Authority, N.H.I.A, rallied stakeholders for a one-day engagement forum in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Held at the Federal Secretariat Conference Hall, the forum provided a platform to unveil the newly developed strategic goals of the N.H.I.A.

The strategic goals lay emphasis on aligning all partners for effective implementation of health insurance reforms in the state and across the country.

Oyo State Coordinator of the N.H.I.A, Mr. Christopher Daramola, described the event as a call to action for all parties to share a common vision for a health insurance system that leaves no one behind.

According to Mr. Daramola, this year’s theme, “Towards a Health Insurance System That Works for All” highlights the authority’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare while strengthening the operational framework of health insurance in Nigeria.

Presentations at the forum covered N.H.I.A. programmes, contributory schemes, benefit packages, enforcement, and claims management, while another session examined the N.H.I.A. Act 2022, two years after its enactment, and explored the future direction of health insurance reforms.

A question-and-answer session followed, with stakeholders seeking clarity on implementation strategies and pledging stronger collaboration to expand health insurance coverage.

In a communique, the N.H.I.A. stressed the need to enforce mandatory insurance laws to improve healthcare access, reduce financial burdens, and build public trust in the health insurance system.

It also urged participants to take the knowledge gained back to their workplaces and communities to accelerate the journey towards Universal Health Coverage in Oyo State and across Nigeria.

The forum brought together N.H.I.A. officials, H.M.Os, enrollees, healthcare facilities, state insurance agencies, professional bodies, and development partners.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said that tertiary institutions in Nigeria were unable to conduct the 2021 admissions within the time frame due to constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is as the board noted that it would meet with institutions and other agencies to determine the 2022 admissions cutoff, among others, on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

These were disclosed in the board’s weekly bulletin, which was made available in Abuja on Monday.

The bulletin read, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has fixed Thursday, July 21, 2022, for the 2022 Policy Meeting and the third edition (2020) of the NATAP-M Awards.

“The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, would chair the policy meeting as well as serve as the chief host of the NATAP-M Awards Ceremony.

“The two events, which are scheduled to be held on the same day and place, will have in attendance heads of tertiary institutions, heads of regulatory agencies in the education sector, and other critical stakeholders such as Chairmen of the Committee on Education at the lower and upper chambers of the National Assembly.”

According to the management of the board, the policy meeting, which is to kick start the 2022 admission process into the nation’s tertiary institutions, will be held before the National Tertiary  Admissions’ performance merit Awards.

The board added, “The policy meeting will discuss critical issues emanating from the presentation to be given by the Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on the just concluded 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Direct Entry Applications, in addition to setting the tone for the 2022/2023 admission exercise.

“The policy meeting is expected to chart policy directions for the nation’s tertiary institutions, set admission guidelines and present application statistics, candidates’ performance, as well as evaluate the 2021 admission exercise. One thousand, one hundred and fifty [1,150], intending pilgrims from Nigeria have missed this year’s Hajj exercise.

The breakdown of the affected intending pilgrims shows that the private tour operators sector has the highest with 740 followed by Kano State with 700.

Others are Plateau State with 91 intending pilgrims while Bauchi State has nine [9].

This is contained in a statement by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Alhaja Fatima Sanda-Usara.

NAHCON regretted all inconveniences caused by the development to the intending pilgrims and other stakeholders and attributed the cause to the last-minute disappointment regarding flight arrangements pointing out that the Commission is ready to refund the intending pilgrims.

“Sadly, despite all efforts to airlift all Nigerian intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2022 Hajj, NAHCON was incapacitated in discharging this responsibility fully, majorly due to last-minute setbacks that frustrated its plan to conclude airlift of pilgrims by 27th June of this year. Unfortunately, the chartered flight option that gave so much hope to NAHCON and the Private Tour Operators’ leadership also became a failure as their IBAN accounts failed accreditation by the respective authorities in Saudi Arabia”.

“The Commission gives assurance that all affected pilgrims will be refunded their Hajj fares while it will work towards improving its deficiencies next time. NAHCON has learnt a lot of lessons and is determined not to have a repetition of the unfortunate situation”.

NAHCON also acknowledged the disappointment and hardships experienced by pilgrims already in Saudi Arabia during their airlift operations to the holy land.

“NAHCON humbly acknowledges the following: that it owes deep and unreserved regrets to entire intending pilgrims to 2022 Hajj for the hardships and disappointments experienced during outbound airlift operations to the holy land. The Commission offers similar apologies to the federal government of Nigeria, State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, Private Tour Operators, and the general public for any embarrassment the situation of the past few weeks might have caused”.
