Nigerian skitmaker, Adebowale Adedeyo popularly known as Mr Macaroni, and other Nigerians gathered at Lekki Tollgate in Lagos on Friday, to mark the third anniversary of the shootings that happened during the #EndSARS protest on October 20, 2020.

Meanwhile, there was a heavy presence of police officers at the Lekki tollgate.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa and other top police officers were also in the area.

Lagos State Police Command had warned that it would not tolerate any form of gathering at the tollgate in the Lekki area of the state.

#EndSARS protests was a public outcry for an end to police brutality, extrajudicial killings, extortion, and abuse of power, especially by officers of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protest, which started off peacefully, led to the disbandment of SARS by the Federal Government.

The protest, however, turned violent as hoodlums took advantage of the situation, burnt police stations, and public facilities, and carried out attacks on officers and citizens.

The protest was brought to a halt on October 20 when officers of the Nigerian Army shot at the protesters, killing and injuring some of the mostly youth protesters.

The Lagos State Government says it has suspended its planned mass burial of the 103 corpses recovered in the wake of the October 2020 #EndSARS protest.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, told newsmen on Monday that the planned mass burial had been suspended, following the controversy generated by the announcement in July.

In a leaked memo dated July 19, 2023, the state government had said it would conduct a mass burial for the 103 corpses.

This had raised dust among human rights campaigners and civil society organisations.

A human rights organisation, Amnesty International, and a group under the aegis of the Coalition of #EndSARS Protesters and Supporters had demanded that the state government should suspend the planned mass burial.

In addition to the suspension demand, Amnesty International had asked the government to “also carry out transparent coroner inquest and autopsies on the 103 #EndSARS victims.”

In its reaction, the state government through the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mr Gboyega Akosile, said the government would “conform to global best practices” in carrying out the mass burial.

When asked for an update on the matter on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy said the planned mass burial “remains suspended to give people ample time to identify their relatives that may be among the corpses.”

“It is to allow more time for identification as suggested when it was disclosed that the government was planning a mass burial for them,” Omotoso said.

He stated further that “up till now, nobody has shown up to identify any of the corpses. But the government has decided to give people more time.”

He added that the planned burial would “be carried out soon, but because of the controversies around that time, it was suspended. People now have the time and ample opportunity to see if their relatives are there.”

The AIG Olasupo Ajani said since the ENDSARS crises, the relationship between the police and the civilians had gone sore and it was one of the factors responsible for the increase rate of criminalities in the country.

Mr. Ajani said the civilian /police relationship in the past had helped the force on different occasions at combating crime.

He noted that killing of officers and men would not solve crises but aggravate it.

The AIG appealed to civilians to eshew violence and embrace peace as the Nigeria police force was ready to redeem its image to promote a cordial relationship  between it and the civilians.

This, he noted would nip crime in the bud.

He added that people should channel their grievances through the right path whenever there were issues and promised that the force would do all it could to retain and regain the cordial relationship.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State in the last election, Chief Bayo Adelabu, has offered to rebuild the two police stations burnt in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital during the #EndSARS protest.

Several police stations across the nation had been burnt by protesters during protest last October. The stations at Ojoo and New Gbagi market were burnt during the period. Iseyin police station was also burnt. The station have remained in ruins since then as no effort has been seen to be made by the federal government to rebuild them.

Adelabu, who is a former deputy governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), made the offer during a courtesy visit to the Oyo state Commissioner of Police, Mrs Ngozi Onadeko. The politician also donated N2 million to relieve the financial burden of the widows of the slain police officers affected by the EndSARS protest.

His media aide, Femi Awogboro, said Adelabu would immediately start work on the reconstruction once police authorities approves his offer.

The politician, who is former Chairman of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, pledged his unflinching support to Oyo State Police Command as an indigene, resident and stakeholder to strengthen the security architecture of the state.

He said: “The security of Oyo State deserves urgent and prompt attention by relevant stakeholders for the protection of lives and property of indigenes and residents as well as the social and economic development of the state. It’s quite shameful that almost seven months after the EndSARS protest, the goverment is yet to reconstruct any of the burnt stations. This is what prompted us to decide to rebuild these stations immediately, especially those in volatile locations like Ojoo and Bola Ige International Market, Old Gbagi, on New Ife Road.”

He emphasized that everyone has a role to play in strengthening the security of the state which used to be one of the safest states in Nigeria, hence the need to support the Nigeria Police at this crucial time.

“On the welfare of the widows of the EndSARS victims, we believe that it is also taking too long for the government to respond to the yearnings of these poor women whose husbands died during the protest, by relieving them of the heavy financial burdens left behind for them. It is not that we didn’t know what to do immediately but we have waited for over six months for government to come to their aids. “Since nothing is forthcoming from the government yet, this is our own little way of relieving them of the financial responsibilities as this goes a long way in motivating serving officers of the Nigerian Police. As a stakeholder in this state, we have decided to donate a sum of N2 million to the widows to enable them take care of their immediate financial needs while waiting for government compensation”, Chief Adelabu added.

The police boss thanked Adelabu for his gesture, describing it as an encouragement from citizens who appreciate the importance of joint efforts in tackling security challenges.
