Ghana has begun accepting West African nationals deported from the United States, including Nigerians, President John Dramani Mahama said on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, Mahama disclosed that a first batch of 14 deportees, made up of Nigerians, a Gambian and others, had already arrived in Accra, with the Ghanaian authorities facilitating their return to their respective countries.

“We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come to our country,” he said.

He justified the decision by saying West Africans “don’t need a visa anyway” to come to Ghana.

The arrangement comes amid Washington’s intensified deportation drive under President Donald Trump, who has pushed for removals to “third countries” as part of his hardline immigration policy.

Trump has previously overseen deportations of migrants to Eswatini, South Sudan and Rwanda despite safety concerns raised by rights groups.

Nigeria, however, has rejected similar overtures from Washington.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, said in July that the Federal Government would not accept deportees from outside Nigeria, citing national security and economic concerns.

Trump hosted five West African leaders at the White House on July 9, where, according to Reuters, one of the key objectives was to persuade them to receive deportees from other countries.

They include the leaders of Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal.

We are poisoning ourselves’: Ghana gold rush sparks environmental disaster
The government has asked the mining company, AngloGold Ashanti, to cover the medical expenses of the injured and the burial costs, while tasking security agencies to ensure peace in the area.

AngloGold Ashanti said the situation had since calmed down and it was working closely with the authorities.

It said its main concern was “the safety and health of our employees and those in our community” who were affected by the incident.

The local chairman of the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners, Kofi Adams, was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying that the violence was “unprecedented”.

He said that nine people had died and 14 severely injured adding that it was “difficult to understand why it had happened”.

In the past, he said, warning shots had been fired to ward off intruders. He also disputed the allegation by the military that the people had been armed.

The army said the “illegal miners were wielding locally manufactured rifles, pump action guns” and other weapons. It said it had a duty to defend itself, innocent civilians and property, including by using lethal force.

There have been tensions between AngloGold Ashanti and residents who accuse them of exploiting mineral resources without doing much to develop the area or create jobs.

Some local small-scale mining associations have been asking to be given some of the company’s mining concessions.

The company insists it has been doing a lot for the local communities.

Four people have died and others are still missing after an explosion at a granite quarry in western Ghana on Saturday.

The victims are believed to be workers who were on night shift at the Chinese-operated quarry in Shama district.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blast which destroyed buildings near the quarry and shook houses in the neighbouring villages.

Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service are currently on the site helping with rescue efforts.

In January, a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine in south-western Ghana crashed with a motorcycle triggering a blast that killed 14 people.

Ghanaian judicial workers’ association has called off their indefinite nationwide strike after meeting government officials on Monday.

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (Jusag) says the strike is on hold for two weeks to allow for engagement and fast-track approval of their salary increase demands.

Court activities in Ghana came to a halt following the strike action last week on Thursday.

All judicial service staff were directed not to report to work until President Nana Akufo-Addo approves their demand for new salaries and payment of arrears since January.

Ghana’s government faces a tough choice as demands for salary increase goes against the International Monetary Fund bailout condition for authorities to reduce spending.

Ghana has declared the end of a Marburg virus disease outbreak that was confirmed nearly two months ago and caused two deaths, the World Health Organisation said on Friday.

The health ministry made the announcement after no new cases of the Ebola-like disease were reported over the previous 42 days, the WHO said in a statement.

No vaccine treatment exists for Marburg, which is almost as deadly as Ebola. Symptoms included high fever as well as internal and external bleeding.

“In total three confirmed cases, including two deaths, were recorded in the outbreak declared on 7 July 2022 after laboratory confirmation of the virus,” the WHO said.

Ghana’s cases were the first detected in West Africa.

There have been previous outbreaks and sporadic cases in other parts of Africa like Angola, DR Congo, Guinea, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.

“Any outbreak of Marburg is a major concern,” said WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti.

“Despite having no previous experience with the disease, Ghana’s response has been rapid and robust.”

The WHO said it was working with Ghana’s health authorities to maintain surveillance, improve detection of the virus and better prepare for a potential resurgence.

The viral illness hits sufferers suddenly, triggering a high fever and severe headaches and patients can develop unstoppable bleeding within days.

Ghana has confirmed its first two cases of the deadly Marburg virus, a highly infectious disease in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola.

It says both patients died recently in a hospital in the southern Ashanti region.

Their samples came back positive earlier this month and have now been verified by a laboratory in Senegal.

Health officials in the West African nation say 98 people are now under quarantine as suspected contact cases.

The World Health Organization, WHO, which is supporting the country’s health authorities, has praised Ghana’s swift response.

“This is good because, without immediate and decisive action, Marburg can easily get out of hand,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO’s Africa director.

No treatment yet exists for Marburg – but doctors say drinking plenty of water and treating specific symptoms improves a patient’s chances of survival.

The virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads between humans through the transmission of bodily fluids.

It is a severe, often fatal illness with symptoms including headache, fever, muscle pains, vomiting blood and bleeding.

Officials are warning people to keep away from caves and to thoroughly cook all meat products before consuming them.

This is the second time that Marburg has been identified in West Africa following one confirmed case in Guinea last year, but that outbreak was declared over in September, five weeks after the case was identified.

The first ever Marburg outbreak was in Germany in 1967 where seven people died.

The virus killed more than 200 people in Angola in 2005, the deadliest outbreak on record according to the global health body.

Ghana’s police say it has arrested three suspects over the public flogging of a pair at the palace of a traditional chief in Wa in the northern Upper West region.

The victims of the flogging, a man and woman, are reported to have been lovers, according to local media.

They were each tied to a pole and flogged on Tuesday afternoon over an alleged leaked sex tape that has gone viral on social media, the reports add.

A video of the flogging has been shared widely in the country.

Flogging is a form of punishment meted by traditional elders in the area for misbehaviour – although it is not approved by law.

The chief was not in the palace during the incident and has condemned the “barbaric act”, his spokesman was quoted as saying in a statement.

Police say the suspects were arrested with the support of the chief and some community members.

“The police are pursuing the remaining suspects to arrest them to face justice,” a statement said.

The the Journalists International Forum For Migration (JIFORM) has petitioned National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) seeking rescue of a Nigerian lady trapped in a prostitution camp in Ghana.

JIFORM Petitions NAPTIP, Seeks Rescue Of 20-year Old Nigerian Lady From Prostitution Camp In Ghana

A 20-year old Nigerian lady (name withheld) trapped in a prostitution camp in Ghana has raised the alarm over threat to her life by an agent that facilitated her travelling.

This is as an international media body with over 300 media practitioners covering migration matters across the continents, the Journalists International Forum For Migration (JIFORM) with headquarters in Lagos on Thursday petitioned the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and other organizations to come her rescue.

The lady trafficked since March 2020 pleaded that she was tired of prostitution and endless demands from her slave madam up to the tune of over a million naira out which she had been forced to remit N300,000.

During an interview with JIFORM, she claimed that the said amount being forced on her was never mentioned as part of the job negotiation deal by the madam not until she arrived at her destination in Ghana.

In a Save Our Soul (SOS) petition filed by Ajibola Abayomi, the President of JIFORM containing the full identity, location and contacts of the victim with the NAPTIP, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria embassy in Ghana, Ghana Immigration Service, the lady expressed the desire to return home saying she was ready to be reunited with her family provided her security could be guaranteed.

The JIFORM President lamented that the pathetic story of the lady called for passionate and urgent attention especially from the NAPTIP in order to help restore both the mental and psychological conditions of the victim.

“I decided to personally take up the matter after interviewing the parties concerned including the lady trafficked to Ghana. NAPTIP should conduct further investigations by examining in details verifiable voiced notes, hot exchanges and established threat to life. At the end of it all I want the lady returned home safely.  Also anti-human trafficking agency  must ensure that the law takes its course mo matter hose ox is gored.

“All the details of the victims including her telephone number and current residential address as well as that of the agent had been forwarded to the relevant authorities for prompt action. My interactions with the accused agent suggests that there is more than meets the eye in this for NAPTIP to handle” Ajibola said.

The victim who was desirous of greener pastures abroad was said to have been lured to Ghana by a friend who took her to the agent that promised her a befitting job in return.

Disturbed by the development her aunt, Miss Sarah Amanabo, narrated how the lady got trapped.

She said the victim eloped without her consent thereby creating a huge concern within their family since 2020 and in the process, her dad passed on.

“My niece is a subject of concern. She went along with a friend under the guise of getting a better paying job as a bartender. It turned out it was a cover for prostitution and she reached out later on because; she was ashamed to speak to me about it, being that she eloped from home.

She said she has been sending all money to her Madam, but the Lady insisted she wasn’t working hard enough to pay back her investment and interest. She requested a bail out and the lady has been threatening her with death she wants to come home but the lady has a grip on her mind” said Mrs Amanabo.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, and the new Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Mr Albert Bagbin, have agreed to strengthen parliamentary relations in a bid to find lasting solutions to challenges such as the trade dispute involving some Nigerian traders in Ghana.

The two speakers reached out to each other during a zoom meeting.

Mr Gbajabiamila told his counterpart that the two countries were like siblings and should continue to explore the avenue of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing shared challenges, adding that there was much both could learn from one another.

The Nigerian Speaker also introduced the project he initiated with five other African Speakers, namely the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments (CoSAP), saying that last year they worked together to advocate debt relief.

He further stated that this year, African Speakers and Heads of Parliaments were expected to gather in Abuja to explore how they could work better together to tackle collective challenges.

Mr Gbajabiamila updated his Ghanaian counterpart on his visit to Ghana late last year in an effort to douse tensions and extract commitments from the Ghanaian government over the trade dispute.

“I look forward to working with you. There are a lot of issues for both our countries, that, I think through Parliamentary Diplomacy and backchannel discussions, we can resolve for the people of both countries.

“I’m sure you are aware of a couple of them, including the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria in terms of our traders and residents over there and yours over here too. I think the onus rests upon both of us to try and resolve whatever issues there are. We started on this trajectory last year with the former speaker and we made very significant inroads and headway.

Gbajabiamila said COSAP would have its inaugural meeting this year in Nigeria where hopefully they will be able to concretise on that issue and address other issues going forward for this year.

On his part,  Bagbin said he welcomed the idea of having a better relationship with the Nigerian Parliament and that he was ready to reciprocate the Nigerian Speaker’s visit so that they would discuss issues.

He also applauded Gbajabiamila for coming up with the idea of CoSAP, which he described as a noble project.

The two Speakers agreed it was important to meet sooner rather than later and concluded with an agreement to meet in Abuja before the first half of this year.

Ghana is to receive Wednesday the first shipment of Covid-19 vaccines from Covax, a global scheme to procure and distribute inoculations for free to poor countries, UNICEF and the World Health Organization said.

“We are pleased that Ghana has become the first country to receive the Covid-19 vaccines from the Covax facility,” UNICEF, which organised the shipment from Mumbai, said in a joint statement with the WHO.

It said the 600,000 doses are part of an initial tranche of deliveries of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine licensed to the Serum Institute of India, “which represent part of the first wave of Covid vaccines headed to several low and middle-income countries.”

The West African nation has recorded 80,759 Covid-19 cases and 582 deaths since the start of the pandemic. These figures are believed to fall short of the real toll as the number of tests is low.

Frontline workers in Ghana are meant to be the first to receive the vaccine.

“In the days ahead, frontline workers will begin to receive vaccines,” UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said.

“The next phase in the fight against this disease can begin – the ramping up of the largest immunization campaign in history.”

Covax, led by Gavi the Vaccine Alliance, the WHO and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), said it would deliver two billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines to its members by the end of the year, including 2,412,000 doses to Ghana.

Schools in the country reopened in January after a 10-month closure, but large social gatherings are banned and land and sea borders have remained closed since March 2020.

Ghana has re-imposed a ban on social gatherings as the number of Covid-19 cases spiral in the country, the president, Nana Akufo-Addo, announced Sunday.

Schools reopened in January after a 10-month closure, but President Nana Akufo-Addo said a return to stricter measures was needed.

“Until further notice, funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performances, and parties are banned,” he said in a televised speech.

Justifying the restrictions, Akufo-Addo said: “Our hospitals have become full, and we have had to reactivate our isolation centres.”

The new measures on social gatherings come as the average daily rates of infection is at 700, compared to 200 two weeks ago.

Land and sea borders are closed since March, while beaches, night clubs, cinemas, and pubs continue to be shut.

Economic growth is expected to plummet this year to its lowest in three decades, to 0.9 per cent according to the International Monetary Fund, from 6.5 per cent in 2019.

As of January 31, Ghana had recorded 67,010 confirmed cases and 416 deaths.

Former President Jerry Rawlings of Ghana has died of COVID-19 related complications at the age of 73, according to multiple reports from Ghanaian media.

The development comes less than a month after he buried his mother.

Rawlings, who is one of the most respected African leaders, was a military leader in Ghana and later became a politician who ruled the country from 1981 to 2001.

The former President initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979.

Prior to that, He led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place.

He was until his death, the African Union envoy to Somalia.

Federal Government has expressed deep concern over the incessant harassment of its citizens in Ghana and the progressive acts of hostility towards the country by Ghanaian authorities, and will no longer tolerate such.
In this regard, the Federal Government is urgently considering a number of options aimed at ameliorating the situation.
In a statement by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, The Federal Government said it has been documenting the acts of hostility towards Nigeria and Nigerians by the Ghanaian authorities.
The statement highlights the acts of hostility to include seizure of the Nigerian Mission’s property located at No. 10, Barnes Road, Accra, which the Nigerian Government has used as diplomatic premises for almost 50 years; Demolition of the Nigerian Mission’s property located at No. 19/21 Julius Nyerere Street, East Ridge, Accra; Aggressive and incessant deportation of Nigerians from Ghana between January 2018 and February 2019, when 825 Nigerians were deported from Ghana; Closure of over 1000 shops belonging to Nigerians; Residency Permit requirements, for which the Ghana Immigration; Service has placed huge fees, far higher than the fees charged by
the Nigerian Immigration Service which include the compulsory Non citizen ID card (US$120, and US$60 for yearly renewal); Medical examinations, including for Covid-19 which is newly introduced (about US$120), and payment for residency permit (US$400 compared to the N7,000 being paid by Ghanaians for residency card in Nigeria).
Others are Outrageous stipulations in the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Act; Media war against Nigerians in Ghana; Harsh and openly biased judicial trial and pronouncement of indiscriminately long jail terms for convicted Nigerians.
The statement notes that there are currently over 200 Nigerians in the Nsawam Maximum prison in Ghana alone.
It states that the Federal Government will like to put on record the fact that even though over 1 million Ghanaians are resident in Nigeria, they are not being subjected to the kind of hostility being meted out to Nigerians in Ghana.
The statement explains further that though the main reason given for the seizure of Federal
