The former president spoke at a lecture entitled ‘Building the Nigeria of our Dreams’ in King’s College, Lagos.

Obasanjo attributed the choice of leadership as a factor responsible for penury, insecurity other challenges bedevilling the country.

He said, ‘‘we are politically divided, economically disunited we are nowhere, we are down the drain. Diplomatically, Nigeria is not at the table. Before we had sent troops to Sudan, Serria Lone but today, we can’t send troops to the Republic of Benin.”

According to him, Nigeria has fallen significantly short of the role it is expected to play in Africa.

“There are three races in the world, white, yellow, and black. For now, America is leading the whites, the Chinese are leading the yellow race, and Nigeria with 225m people is created by God to lead the black race. When we stop disappointing ourselves we can take care of the continent and the black race. Nigeria has no business with poverty, insecurity, or political division.”

Obasanjo pointed out that the current situation was not God’s choice for the nation.

‘‘It is the advertently or inadvertently choice of our leaders. It is not God’s choice for us.”

While acknowledging that few things had been done right, the former president opined that doing the right thing had not been sustained.

Sunday is a notable day in the Christian calendar as the faithful gather in churches for services.

However, this is not the case for some residents of Ota, Ogun State this Sunday, June 12 as some of them prefer to stay within the confine of their homes for personal communion with God rather than go for church service.

This was due to the security situation in the country as gathered by our correspondent, especially with the day being June 12.

Two residents of Ota, MrAdesegun Ayomide and Mr. Tosin Lawal noted that the recent attack in Owo coupled with different news on social media created uncertainties about events Democracy Day could trigger, which influenced their decisions.

Some residents, however, urged Federal Government to do more in tackling the insecurity ravaging the country as people these days go about their daily activities in the fear of the unknown.

The age-long and laudable objective of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was said to be under serious threat as a result of the seemingly intractable problem of insecurity pervading the land.

This view was expressed on Friday by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba  Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade ll while hosting the management team of the NYSC in Oyo State led by the State  Coordinator, Mrs. Grace Ogbuogebe at his Alarere residence.

Oba Balogun subsequently called on the Federal Government to put more efforts in the fight against insecurity, noting that, “the level of insecurity is fastly eroding the noble idea and objective of the founding fathers of the scheme that remains one of the best attempts to unify the country.

“Today, an average parent would not want his or her child to go far away from the home state in the name of national service because of the fear of unknown which was unheard of in the years past. The gains of the NYSC scheme are too precious to be discarded on the altar of insecurity”, Olubadan added.

Recalling his experience on his return to the country from the United Kingdom in 1972 when he had offers to either work at the then University of Ife (UNIFE) now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife or Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and chose Zaria because he wanted to know his country, the monarch said such decision was made then because everywhere was save and secured for all and sundry.

He enjoined the present corps members serving in the state to make the best use of the opportunity and hospitality of their hosts to advance the cause of the oneness of the country as he promised the NYSC management in the state his support and cooperation towards sustaining the objective of the founding fathers.

Earlier, the State Coordinator, Mrs. Ogbuogebe said the visit was to felicitate Oba Balogun on his ascension of the throne, stressing that the entire management was on camp during the installation/coronation in March this year which made it impossible for her team to be part of the epoch -making event.

She reeled out numerous achievements of the scheme across the country as well as the various interventions being made in the critical sectors of the national life including education and health. “Today, there’s no school or General Hospital/Primary Health Centre in Oyo State that you would not find a Corps member”, she said.

The State Coordinator applauded the government of the state for its unflinching cooperation just as she recalled the fatherly role played by the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1 for the scheme as well with a call on Oba Balogun to see the scheme as his baby too, saying, “we will be coming with our requests Kabiyesi and we want your doors to remain open to us”.

Community policing is a system that brings police and citizens together to prevent crime and solve neighbourhood problems.

With community policing, the emphasis is on stopping crime before it happens.

Community policing is seen as an effective way to promote public safety and enhance the quality of life in a society.

It gives citizens more control over the quality of life in their community.

What this implies is that police become part of the neighbourhood which helps the security operatives to know residents needs and for the residents to develop greater trust in police.

The partnership that develops over time can ultimately help the police find the underlying causes of crime within the neighbourhood.

By getting the community in fighting crime, the police have more resources available in crime prevention.

As they familiarise themselves with the members of the community, officers are more likely to obtain valuable information about criminals and their activities which can lead to swift arrest of criminals.

In community policing, active participation is required from the average citizen in each local government in order for it to work.

With active participation of stakeholders, there will be a reduction of fear in the community due to the increase in police presence in the neighbourhood which will make the residents feel more secured.

As citizens become more active in taking care of their community, there will be greater awareness about what security officers do on a daily basis.

As the police community relations improves, the quality of life in the community improves while crime is reduced.

With community policing, there is room for flexibility as solutions lies in the strategies put in place to ensure a crime-free society.

This is because the community will come up with solutions that will work within their own neighbourhood taking into cognisance local peculiarities.

For the aim of reducing crime to be achieved, there must be effective use of talents and resources available within communities which will help ease the severely strained police resources.

A reduction in crime will allow for more police resources to be allocated to services that have the greatest impact in the community.

In order to develop a partnership with the community, the police must form a strong relationship with the community leaders and traditional rulers.

Without the trust and involvement of the community any attempt at community policing will not be effective.

Effective community policing requires an understanding from people involved from the top down to the citizens.

Communities should be ready to partner the security agencies by being the ears, eyes and the nose of the police as the residents are closer to the grassroots.

As the regular police have been overstretched, community policing should be given a trial though it requires everyone’s involvement to achieve a crime-free nation. Rasheedah Makinde

He stated this while speaking with Radio Nigeria in his hometown, Ogbomoso.

Otunba Alao-Akala who noted that no politician would ever play politics with insecurity, said Oyo State was only having its share of prevailing insecurity issues facing Nigeria.

The former governor said the Oyo State government had harkened to his previous advice on checking insecurity in the state.

“The security problem in the country is not only in Oyo State. I am not comfortable because part of the state is witnessing unrest, particularly Ibarapa North and Central. They cannot sleep with their eyes closed. I am worried.”

“The other time I advised that there should be an enlarged stakeholders’ security meeting in the state whereby everyone can advise the government on how to go about security challenges. I think he has done that and by doing that he should leave security of each domain to traditional rulers who know people in their own territory.”

“There is no politician who will play politics with security. No politician that wants results will try that. Politics involves all of us, so if I play politics with security, how do you know if it won’t catch up with me. I don’t believe that any politician is behind what is happening in Oyo state.” He said.

Speaking on Eid-el-kabir celebrations, Otunab Alao-Akala urged Nigerians to take the path of God.

The Oyo State Government, on Saturday, declared that contrary to the widely circulated report that unknown gunmen had, again, attacked Igangan and other parts of Ibarapa on Friday, community leaders have declared that the invaders were men of the Nigeria Customs Service.
Political and traditional leaders of Ibarapa extraction described the evening raid on the Igbo Ora and other communities by men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) as unnecessary and not well-thought-out.
The leaders, including the Olu of Igbo Ora, Oba Jimoh Olajide Titiloye, and the Chairman of Ibarapa North Local Government, Hon. Adeoye Adedoyin, spoke at a meeting held in Igbo Ora with a fact-finding team of the Oyo State Government, led by the Executive Assistant on Security Matters to Governor Seyi Makinde, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd).
The leaders said that it was regrettable that the Customs Service troubled the peace of the area when its men stormed Ibarapaland, shooting sporadically.
The Olu of Igbo Ora, who was first to speak, said that the Customs’ raid left Igbo Ora and other adjoining towns in disarray following the raid that left three persons, including an Amotekun operative dead.
“The raid left so much turmoil in our communities as the Customs men came, shooting sporadically. Many of our people ran helter-skelter.
“We want it stated loud and clear that our communities, Igbo Ora, Igangan and Ayete are not border towns. Why should Customs turn the communities to theatres of bloodshed and war?
“We want Customs to regulate their operations. It will be better if the authorities restrict them to border towns to end unwarranted attacks on innocent communities,” the Olu of Igbo Ora said.
Chairman of Ibarapa North Local Government, Hon. Adedoyin, also told the meeting that the raid left a sour taste in the mouth, as, according to him, peace had returned to the area following the series of security steps taken by the State and Local Government after the last attack on the area by suspected herdsmen.
“We have received the cooperation of state and non-state actors in our efforts aimed at boosting security. The hunters, Amotekun and other security agencies have been cooperating fully, but we were shocked to hear reports of sporadic gunshots and commotion that ensued after a raid by men of Customs Service.
“That raid is regrettable because it threatened the peace of our area,” the Council Chairman said.
Odukoya, the Executive Assistant to Governor Makinde, in his address, called for vigilance and calm among the people, adding that the community policing and integrated policing initiative of the administration has been effective.
He said that the police in the area have confirmed the death of one Amotekun operative and two other persons following the said raid.
The team, which later visited Igangan, Ayete, Tapa, locations in Igbo Ora, was accompanied by traditional rulers and community leaders from across Ibarapa land.

Security

Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, MMPN wants as a matter of urgency the Federal Government  to address the security challenges that are threatening the unity of the country.

This is contained in a statement in Ibadan by Chairman, MMPN, Oyo State Chapter, Alhaji Ridwan Fasasi in commemoration of this year’s Eidul-Fitri.

Alhaji Fasasi noted that the Federal Government needed to intensify efforts and embrace proactive mechanisms as the security lapses were the basis for agitations for breakup of the country.

He enjoined secessionists to have a rethink and team up with the government and the security agencies to bring about lasting peace as tearing the country apart would be counterproductive.

Alhaji Fasasi urged Muslims to celebrate Eid-Fitri with caution and observe COVID-19 protocols as the virus is still very active in the country.

He enjoined the faithful to sustain the good virtues such as love, good character, sacrifice and charity exhibited during Ramadan now that the holy month was over.

Alhaji Fasasi admonished Muslims to continue to imbibe the culture of peaceful co-existence as good relationship is a duty that Muslims  owe others irrespective of their religious affiliation, stressing that one of the conditions for a faithful to be a true believer is to wish for his neighbours what he wished for himself.

The MMPN Chairman urged the Muslim philanthropists to continue to sponsor Islamic programmes even after Ramadan as the messages used to have positive impacts on the faithful.

Security

Security Operatives, traditional rulers, political office holders, farmers and community leaders in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State have converged on Ayete  to fashion out ways to end kidnapping and banditry in the area
Correspondent Abisola Oluremi, who   covered the meeting held at the headquarters of the local government, said it  lasted for hours

Setting the tone for the discussion, the various stakeholders on security decried the increase in criminal activities in Ayete and its environs in recent times.

They all opined that without collaborative efforts of the residents, the needed success would not be achieved.
Some residents that spoke with Radio Nigeria alleged that men of the Nigeria Police sometimes took decisions in favour of the suspected kidnappers and bandits.

They suggested  that the security officers should rather go into the forest, which is the hideout of the perpetrators rather than conducting stop and search on the major roads

Speaking, a traditional ruler, Elenpe of Tapa, Oba Sunday Titiloye, said it was high time Federal Government took steps on ways to check how people carry about sophisticated weapons without caution.

The Oyo State Commandant of Western Security Network, also known as Amotekun, Rtd Col. Olayinka Olayanju encouraged the residents to give out adequate information that  could assist in curtailing banditry and kidnapping in Oyo state.

In a remark, Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko assured the residents that the security agency would end banditry in the area.

She equally handed over  a pick up vehicle and two motorcycles to Ayete Police  Division to enhance its operations.
