The Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, So-Safe Corps, has apprehended a member of an armed robbery syndicate terrorizing Ogun State.

A statement by the Corps’ Director of information and public relations, Assistant Commander Moruf Yusuf indicated that around 1 am on the 28th of July 2023, the special team of the corps on routine patrol sighted four gang members at New Life Community, Oloko-pupo, Atan, in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government suspected to be strategizing to embark on a criminal activity.

The statement says that the team of the Corps led by Bolaji Obadeyi challenged them and they responded by opening fire at the officers.

It noted that the team succeeded in apprehending one of the gang members identified as

Saheed Ade, a 33-year-old resident of Ipokia, in Ipokia Local Government, recovered one locally-made pistol with 3 live cartridges from him.

The statement indicates that the apprehended suspect said that the three gang members now at large T. J, Monsuru, and Yusuf were also residents of Ipokia, confessing that their mission in the Area, was to steal and return a Sienna Car bought from their boss called Dao who lives in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, with the aim of reselling it to Nigeria in a different colour.

It notes that the State Commander of the Corps, Dr Soji Ganzallo had instructed the Agbara Area Commander of the Corps,  Adebesin Lukmon to work with the police and arrest the other suspects now at large.

According to the statement, the injured suspected armed robber and one of the injured officers of the So-Safe were receiving treatment at a nearby hospital while the Nigeria Police Force Atan Divisional Headquarters was further investigating the matter.

Road accident has reportedly claimed the life of a traditional ruler in Ogun State.

The tragic incident occurred when a truck, with registration number EPE 252 XF, allegedly ran over the commercial tricycle boarded by the royal father.

Witnesses claimed that the tricycle conveying the Olu of Onibuku, Oba Abraham Bankole in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government area of the state was crushed by the truck along the Ota -Idiroko Expressway, instantly killing the monarch.

Those who spoke with newsmen at the scene said they could not ascertain what made the traditional ruler to abandon his vehicle for a journey in the tricycle involved in the unfortunate accident. 

When contacted, Ogun State Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mrs Florence Okpe said an accident was recorded in the area, but she was yet to get the full details of those involved.

Ogun State Government has inaugurated a committee to conduct integrity tests on various school infrastructures as part of efforts to provide a conducive and safe learning environment for students across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu stated when he led the team from the Education and Housing Ministries to inspect a collapsed building at Agbado District Comprehensive High School, Ifo.

Professor Arigbabu explained the committee would quickly move around the schools across the state to carefully evaluate the viability of the existing structures to ascertain the possibility of usage alongside the newly rehabilitated and constructed ones.

He noted that the construction of the collapsed eight-classroom building started in 2007 and had not been put into use because the present administration in the state could not guarantee its desirability for usage.

Professor Arigbabu gave the assurance that the present administration would not entrust its projects into the hands of any contractors without the requisite capacity to meet up the standard required by the government.

In a reaction, the Principal, of Agbado District Comprehensive High School, Junior, Mr. Ayodeji Ogunleye, lauded the two Ministries for the quick response, promising to do all within their capacity to maintain school infrastructure.

The Ogun State Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has granted amnesty to seven inmates as part of the measures to decongest correctional centres in the state.

Justice Dipeolu while speaking at a jail delivery exercise held at the conference hall of the State Judiciary Complex in Abeokuta stated that the details of the released inmates, including their names, fingerprints, and pictures, were thoroughly documented for record purposes.

She advised the beneficiaries of the amnesty to refrain from committing offences, as they may not be as lucky if they find themselves back in custody in the future.

The officer in charge of the old Custodian Centre, Mr James Ogunmoyede, while speaking commended the state government for its support in ensuring prompt justice dispensation, and charged the Heads of Correctional Centres to ensure prompt notification of the Chief Judge of occurrences.

Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the observation of every August  20th as the annual Isese-Cultural Day and to be declared as a work free day in the State.

The passage of the resolution, followed a  debate by the State lawmakers resulting in a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Mr Yusuf Sherif and seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Lukmon Adeleye at the plenary presided over by Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo.

In their separate views  members including the Sponsor, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju, Mr Damilola Soneye, Mr Olanrewaju Bakare and Mr Waliu Owode, said the resolution was aimed at propagating the rich culture and tradition of the State, in preservation for the upcoming generations. 

Other members, Mr Ayodele Wasiu, Mr Babatunde Tella and Minority Leader, Mr Lukman Adeleye stated that the resolution would go a long way in boosting tourism and  the uniqueness of the culture and traditions of the State.

Responding,The Speaker, Mr Oluomo stressed that the passage of the resolution would give proper identity to the cultural values of the people, with a clarification that the declaration of public holiday remained the exclusive of the Federal Government.

Ogun State government named former Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Bukola Olopade as the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, LOC, for the 2024 National Sports Festival to be hosted in the State.

Unveiling the 16-man Local Organizing Committee in Abeokuta, the State capital, The Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, noted that a sports enthusiast, Mr Tilewa Adebayo, will be the Co-Chairman for the biennial event.

Mr Talabi explained that the LOC had been mandated to set up subcommittees, made up of various stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free exercise as well as deliver a world class sports festival in the country.

He pointed out that the unveiling of the committee was to reaffirm the readiness of the State government to hold the 2024 National Sports Festival.

Other members of of the committee are the two-time Olympic medalist, Chief Falilat Ogunkoya-Omotayo, the Secretary-general of the Local Organising Committee for the NSF Edo 2020, Dr Emmanuel Igbinosa, a notable sports administrator, Dr Kweku Tandoh, as well as the renowned sports psychologist and head of the Department of Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences at University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ghana, Professor Oluwaseun Olanrewaju Omotayo.

The former Ogun State governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has called on the state government to stop the payment of his monthly pension as an ex-governor.

Senator Daniel who is the senator representing the Ogun East district of the state in a letter written to the state governor said he made the request to clear his conscience of the ethical code against double emoluments as a serving Senator.

The senator in the letter dated fourteenth of June 14th June 2023 also reminded the government that since he left office in 2011, he had not benefited from any of the allowances in the governor’s pension scheme of the state.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said that his administration would take advantage of the newly signed electricity bill by establishing a company that would generate and distribute power supply in the State.

Governor Abiodun made this known at Okemosan Abeokuta while receiving participants of the Senior Executive Course 45, Group 1 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

Governor Abiodun pointed out that his second term administration would focus on provision of public utilities, which include water and electricity supply.

The Governor also explained that his administration was taking necessary measures to improve security architecture across the State, adding that his government had provided modern security gadgets and improved the welfare of security personnel working in the State.

He also gave the assurance that Airport currently under construction in the State would be opened for commercial activities in the next four months.

Earlier, the team leader and Director of Studies, Professor Oluwafunmilayo Para-Mallam, said the participants were on a week study tour of the State to research on topical issues of national importance.

Professor Para-Mallam acknowledged the achievements made by the present administration in the State in all sectors of the economy.

President Bola Tinubu was received by a large turnout of residents and notable dignitaries on his arrival to Ijebu Ode during an official visit to Ogun State. 

Governor Dapo Abiodun led the roll call of top government officials to welcome the president who arrived on a Nigeria Air Force helicopter at about 10. 30 am to a rousing reception at the Dipo Dina International stadium, Ijebu-Ode. 

The Presidential train proceeded to the palace of the Awujale of Ijebu Land, Oba Sikiru Adetona for a private meeting.

Oba Adetona who commended President Tinubu for the reforms he had introduced to turn around the country’s fortunes, also called for the support and prayers of all Nigerians to enhance success of the present administration. 

The President who is scheduled to also visit the Ake, Abeokuta palace of the Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo was accompanied by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Mr Dele Alake, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and his Chief of Staff, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila.

Transportation

Three persons have been confirmed dead and two others were injured yesterday in an accident involving a car and a truck on the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway in Ogun state.

The Spokesperson of Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.


Mr Akinbiyi explained that the accident was caused by excessive speed and loss of control on the part of the car driver.

He also said three dead victims were men of God clothed in white apparel with robes coming from a deliverance service in the Oke-Aragbiji area of Osun state.

According to him, eyewitnesses said the driver lost control due to excessive speed, ran over the median, and hit and uprooted the street light before colliding head-on with the truck loaded with cement.

Mr Akinbiyi added that the injured victims were evacuated to Ijaye General Hospital in Abeokuta for treatment and the deceased were deposited at the hospital morgue.

The TRACE spokesperson commiserated with the deceased families, calling on motorists to eschew excessive speed and always take adequate rest before embarking on a journey.

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, Ogun State chapter has extended its three days warning strike following the failure of the state government to accede to their demands.

PASAN had last week declared a three-day to register workers displeasure with the state government over the non implementation of Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure.

Radio Nigeria correspondent who visited State House of Assembly observed that, some of the staff were in groups, discussing the ongoing situation at the assembly.

One of the staff who spoke on condition of anonymity explained that, the strike was extended over the inability of State government responding to their agitations.

People in positions of authority have been reminded of the need to render selfless service in appreciation of the fact that attaining leadership positions depended solely on the benevolence of the Almighty God. 

A religious leader, Mufasir of Egbaland, Dr Taofeek Amolegbe stated this during a special Jumat at the Central Mosque, Kobiti, Abeokuta to commemorate the second term inauguration of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun. 

Dr Amolegbe, who advised the leaders to make forgiveness a priority in their interactions with others, maintained that leadership positions were meant to serve God and humanity. 

In a remark, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, said his administration would focus on good governance and people-oriented projects during the second term.

Governor Abiodun also commended the Muslim faithful in the state for their support during his first term administration.

A 28 year old man, Adeyemi Babatunde has been arrested by operatives of Ogun State Police Command for allegedly having unlawful carnal knowledge of his 5 year old biological daughter

The suspect was arrested after the mother of the victim reported at Ijebu Mushin divisional headquarters that her daughter had been having difficulty whenever she wants to urinate.

The mother told policemen that it when she inquired from her daughter that the victim told her that her father laid her on the bed and inserted her manhood into her private part when the mother was not at home.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a statement in Abeokuta.

Mr Oyeyemi said the suspect had confessed to the commit the crime but claimed not to know what comes over him as at that time.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olanrewaju Oladimeji, has ordered that the suspect be transferred to Anti Human Trafficking and Child Labour section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

National Orientation Agency, NOA, says it will continue to support ideas, efforts and activities meant to enhance the well-being of Nigerians.

 The State Director, NOA, Mr Kolawole Obadina stated in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital during a capacity building workshop organized by the African Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge Research and Development Project, in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency, NOA. 

Mr Obadina, who said the agency would continue to support ideas, efforts and activities meant to enhance the well-being of Nigerians, pointed out that the knowledge – based partnership on Biodiversity would enable participants to make greater impacts on the health sector. 

Also, the President, African Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge Research and Development Project, Alhaji Shuaibu Aro expressed optimism that the training would promote the development of traditional medicines and its integration into healthcare delivery with a view to reducing excessive reliance on Orthodox Medicine. 

In a message to the forum, the State Commissioner for Forestry, represented by Mr  Taiwo Akinsinde encouraged Nigerians, especially rural dwellers, to take advantage of the project and engage in agricultural business of producing plants and animals needed as raw materials  for improved healthy living among the people. 

Researchers and notable end users of natural resources at the event called for increased efforts to preserve natural plants and animal species from going into extinction. 

Participants, who were drawn from across the 20 Local Government Areas of the State, maintained that the preservation of the natural elements was imperative for the survival and sustainability of the human race. 

The theme of the workshop is “Exploiting Biodiversity Conservation and Traditional knowledge Research for Generational Rebirth.

Agriculture

The Federal Government is working with the Ogun State government and other relevant stakeholders to support Cassava farmers with knowledge-based trainings and provision of farm input.

The collaboration, anchored by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is also aimed at reducing the loss of resources occasioned by the adverse effects of climate change on farming activities.

The Ministry’s Director in Ogun State, Dr Ayo Ajayi and a representative from Abuja, Mrs Esther Moyo made these known in Abeokuta at a training on promoting climate resilient practices among Cassava farmers.

Dr Ajayi and Mrs Moyo explained that the training and empowerment for both the cassava farmers and agricultural extension workers were necessary to enable the farmers to adopt smart initiatives to improve their yields for enhanced rural and national economy.

Also, the Acting Programme Manager, Ogun State Agricultural Development Programme, OGADEP, Mrs Solape Awe and the Programme’s Director of Extension Services, Mrs Abiola Sobukonla said the agency would reach out to cassava farmers across the state through the participants, identified as early adopters of new trends.

In the course of the training, the resource person, Dr Modupe Abidemi encouraged the cassava farmers to brace up to the challenge of working with weather forecasting tools, ensuring proper management of soil and water and sticking to the use of high quality planting materials.

Twenty-six families of Police officers that died in the course of duties in Ogun State have received compensation of more than forty-five million nairas from the Nigeria Police.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Oladimeji Olanrewaju, while handing over the cheques to the affected families at the Eleweran state headquarters of the command said the gesture was part of the welfare schemes of the current Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba for the police officers.

Mr. Olanrewaju said the compensation was to ensure that the families of those policemen and women who lost their lives do not feel the pain of the loss.

He said the inspector General of Police advised the families to judiciously utilize the money in the interest of those left behind by the gallant officers.

The Commissioner of Police also paraded about forty suspects arrested across the state for various crimes ranging from cultism, armed robbery, and murder to illegal possession of drugs and firearms.

Mr. Olanrewaju who pointed out that, twenty-four criminal suspects had been prosecuted in various courts in the last two weeks across the state also urged parents to advise their wards against criminal activities to prevent them from facing the full weight of the law.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Abubakar wants farmers to take advantage of the available training programmes on climate change resilient practices to boost their production capacity.

Dr Abubakar made the call in Abeokuta at a training programme for maize farmers on the need to tackle the challenges of climate change.

Speaking through a representative, Mrs Esther Moyo, the Minister emphasized the need for the farmers to be equipped with adequate knowledge and resources to cushion the effect of harsh weather on their operations with a view of improving their productivity.

Also, the Ogun State Acting Coordinator, for the Ministry, Dr Ayo Ajayi said the training was aimed at keeping the farmers up to date in farming business and helping them to develop ways to manage the prevailing weather condition.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Adeola Odedina who was represented by the Acting Programme Manager of the State Agricultural Development Programme, OGADEP, Mrs Solape Awe urged the farmers to embrace safe farming practices for enhanced productivity.

Speaking on climate resilient practices in maize production in the South West region of the country, a resource person, Mr Femi Akinniyi encouraged the farmers to adopt the use of weather forecasting tools, smart tillage and early maturing varieties in the bid to mitigate the effects of climate on maize production.

Some of the farmers, Mr Nurudeen Olayinka, Mrs Adeola Gbadamosi and Mr Oladipo Ogungbe who described the training programme as timely, urged the federal government to support small holder farmers with necessary tools, especially, in the area of irrigation.

Ogun State government has advised eateries and food outlets in the state capital to desist from their unhygienic pollution emanating from unwholesome practices within seven days

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya gave the advice after an inspection visit to the affected eateries and food outlets.

Mr Oresanya who expressed displeasure over their failure to comply with hygienic practices despite several warnings encouraged the owners of the eateries and food outlets to improve on their operational hygiene towards safeguarding their customers and residents of the state from the risk of food poising resulting from their present condition. 

According to Oresanya, it was discovered that accumulated fats, oils and grease and other food materials in a confined chamber were not scooped daily thus allowing their breakdown by microbes which releases toxic waste. 

The Commissioner for Environment noted that the state government would not hesitate to prosecute any eateries or food outlets for food poisoning if the need arose.

Mr Oresanya, assured that the state government monitoring team would continue to enforce the state sanitation laws and urged all eateries and food outlets to be on the right side of the law.

Ogun State Police Command has arrested ten members of a dreaded Eiye Confraternity who have been allegedly terrorizing Sagamu and its environs in recent times.

The suspects, Adekoya Adesina, Ayinde Olumide, Adebayo Jamiu, Ajayi Temitope, Taiwo Olatunji, Oladapo Ayeye, Johnson Adeyemi, Tunde Banjo, Gbenga Morufu and Tunde Adenuga were arrested after men of Anti-Cultists section received information that a group of cultists were converging at different locations in Odogbolu to unleash terror in Sagamu in continuation of the supremacy battle going on among the various cult groups in the town and its environs.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the arrest of the suspects in a statement in Abeokuta.

Mr Oyeyemi pointed out that the hoodlums attacked policemen with dangerous weapons but they were subdued after which ten out of them were apprehended.

He explained that the 2nd-in-command of the Anti-Cultists unit, Morakinyo Adejumo was seriously injured during the operation, and he is currently responding to treatment at a healthcare facility.

The command’s spokesperson listed items recovered from the suspects to include eight live cartridges and large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian Hemp.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Mr. Olanrewaju Oladimeji, has ordered a massive manhunt for the remaining members of the group.

The Police Service Commission has approved the appointment of Mr Oladimeji  Olarewaju as the Commissioner of Police for Ogun State Command. 

Mr Olarewaju before the new appointment was the Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti-fraud, FCID Annex Alagbon, Lagos. 

The new Ogun police helmsman, born on the 25th of May, 1964 hails from Mushin in Lagos State and holds B.A. History/Political Science, LL.B., BL. 

He joined the Police Force on 3rd of March 1990 as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP. 

He became the first officer to exploit the fiat given by the Attorney-General of the Federation to prosecute the case of arrested terrorists at the state High Court and secure conviction when he was Deputy Commissioner of Police in Borno State.  

He was at a time the DPO at Mowe and Ilaro-Yewa as well as acted as the Area Commander in Ilaro. 

Mr Olanrewaju is married and loves playing Squash and reading Crime novels in his leisure time.

A 33-year-old woman Olaide Adekunle has been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for selling her 18-month-old baby at the rate of 600,000 naira to yet to be identified buyer.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi in a statement in Abeokuta said the suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged at Sango divisional headquarters by the woman’s husband, Nureni Rasaq.

According to the statement, the suspect’s husband said his wife, Olaide, left home for Lagos on the 15th of March 2023 with their baby girl but returned home without the baby.

Mr Oyeyemi explained that the suspect confessed to having sold the baby to someone in Lagos, stating that she borrowed money from a microfinance bank and was unable to pay back the money.

He said the suspect explained further that she ran to Lagos and started hawking sachet water because the bank agents were threatening to deal decisively with her.

The Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Babakura Muhammed, has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby.

Obituary

A former Judge of the International Court of Justice, Hague, Netherlands, Prince Bola Ajibola, is dead.

Ajibola, who was also a former Attorney-General of Nigeria, died at 89.

Ajibola, the founder of Crescent University, Abeokuta, died on Saturday midnight after a long-time illness as a result of old age.

The eldest child of the late jurist, Segun Ajibola, SAN, disclosed this in a statement, on Sunday in Abeokuta.

He wrote, “With very deep heart and gratitude to Almighty Allah, our Dad, Prince Bola Ajibola, departed this world over midnight. May Almighty Allah bless him with Aljanah Firdaus.”

A 43-year-old man, Yusuf Hassan, has been arrested by Operatives of Ogun State Police Command for allegedly setting the apartment of his ex-lover Busayo Falola ablaze leading to the burning down of the whole building. 

The Suspect was arrested on the 4th of April 2023 after a 62-year-old owner of the house, Adejoke Salau, had reported the incident at Ago Iwoye divisional headquarters.

The landlady told policemen that she heard a noise from one of her buildings within her compound situated at no 127, Old Schorlar Palace Igan Road Ago Iwoye, at about quarter past one in the morning, and when she came out she discovered that the building was on fire while the tenants in the house were trapped in there. 

She pointed out that it was the quick intervention of neighbours that rescued the three tenants, but the house got burnt completely. 

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the arrest of the suspect in Abeokuta.

Mr Oyeyemi explained that the suspect claimed that he only wanted to burn his ex lover’s apartment because he had tried his possible best to reconcile with her but to no avail.

The Command’s spokesman said the suspect confessed that he bought five hundred naira petrol, poured it into her room through the window and set it on fire. 

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has directed that the suspect be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Federal Government has renewed its commitment to the efforts at bridging the nation’s infrastructure gap through a gradual process of repairs, renewal and construction on major highways across the country.

Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola gave the assurance at the official handing over of the eight hundred and fifty metres internal road project executed within the premises of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Idi Aba, Abeokuta.

Represented by the Federal Controller of Works, Ogun State, Mrs Forosola Oloyede, the minister explained that the present administration had successfully intervened in the provision of the internal road network for 64 federal tertiary institutions. 

The minister pointed out that special repairs were being carried out on other roads in Ogun State, including the Lagos-Ota, Abeokuta-Ibadan, Ibooro-Ilaro and Papalanto-Obele roads. 

In a remark, the Medical Director, FMC, Idi Aba Abeokuta, Professor Olawale Musa-Olomu expressed gratitude that the federal government’s intervention in internal roads would greatly enhance accessibility within the health institution and prevent flooding during the rainy season. 

Professor Musa-Olomu also urged the government to expedite action in ensuring the completion of the remaining two-and-a-half kilometre road yet to be tarred.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has presented Certificates of Return, CoR, to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Deputy Governor, Mrs  Noimot Salako-Oyedele and all the newly elected members of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Speaking at the ceremony, INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of Ogun, Osun and Ondo Professor Adekunle Ajayi expressed optimism that the lessons learnt during the process of the election would serve as a working document towards ensuring the highest standard of electoral management in the country.

Professor Ajayi gave the assurance that INEC would remain committed to the vision of becoming one of the best electoral management bodies globally.

In his reaction, the Re-elected Governor emphasized that his administration would ensure the seamless delivery of people-oriented programmes and projects to make life more comfortable for the people of the state.

Governor Abiodun urged the people and other contestants in the election to join hands with his government towards ensuring sustainable development across the state.
