Ukraine and Saudi Arabia have signed an air defence agreement during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the kingdom facing Iranian drone attacks, two senior officials told AFP on Friday.

Kyiv has sought to leverage its expertise in downing Russian drones to help Gulf nations, which are being attacked with the same kind of Iranian-designed Shahed drones that Russia fires on Ukraine.

“The point of the agreement is that Ukraine will support them in developing all the necessary components of air defence, which they currently lack,” one official said of the document which, according to another was signed on Thursday.

Both spoke to AFP on the condition of anonymity.

Kyiv has been using a mix of cheap drone interceptors, electronic jamming tools and anti-aircraft guns to down Russian drones fired at its cities on a nightly basis for four years.

It touts its anti-drone defences as the best in the world.

Ukraine has proposed swapping its interceptors for vastly more expensive air-defence missiles that Gulf countries are using to down Iranian drones. Ukraine says it needs more of them to fend off Russian missile attacks.

The deal signed between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia “is not only about interceptors as such, but about building a system, integrating it with other air defence components, Ukrainian experience in its use, AI, and all the other elements of data analysis needed to counter Shaheds and other drones,” one of the officials said.

Zelensky confirmed on social media that both countries had “reached an important arrangement” on defence cooperation and that he had met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his visit.

“We are ready to share our expertise and systems with Saudi Arabia,” Zelensky said, adding: “Saudi Arabia also has capabilities that are of interest to Ukraine, and this cooperation can be mutually beneficial.”

He did not disclose what exactly has been agreed as part of the deal.

Zelensky also met with Ukrainian anti-drone experts that have been deployed to the country since US and Israel launched strikes on Iran that spurred retaliatory drone and missile attacks from Tehran.

“Even in such a short time, Ukrainian experts were able to share extensive expertise,” Zelensky said.

“Ukraine’s expertise is unique, and recognised as such, and that is why everyone is so interested in our technologies and experience.”

Saudi Arabia is set to host the men’s 2034 World Cup after Australia decided against bidding to stage the tournament.

Football Australia confirmed its decision only hours before Fifa’s deadline for declarations of interest on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia is the only other nation to bid.

“We have reached the conclusion not to do so for the 2034 competition,” read a statement from Football Australia.

Australia’s governing body says it intends to focus its efforts on hosting the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2026 and the Club World Cup in 2029.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host the 2030 tournament, with matches also in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

FIFA had said the 2034 World Cup would be held in Asia or Oceania, and an Australian bid was regarded as the only potential challenger to Saudi Arabia, which announced its intention to bid shortly after Fifa’s decision.

Despite receiving support from the Asian Football Confederation, Saudi Arabia would likely be viewed as a controversial host.

Saudi Arabia says it expects talks which began in Jeddah on Saturday between Sudan’s warring military factions will reach an effective ceasefire.

In the first confirmation that the meetings had started, the Saudi foreign ministry said both sides recognized the need to ease the suffering of the Sudanese people.

It said, as well as stopping the fighting, the aim was to ensure the delivery of relief supplies and the restoration of essential services.

There’s been no comment from the Sudanese army or its rivals from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on the talks.

The meetings in Jeddah are the first since the fighting broke out more than three weeks ago.

Saudi Arabia is to host the first face-to-face talks on Saturday between the warring armies in Sudan after several ceasefires broke down.

A joint US-Saudi statement welcomed the start of “pre-negotiation talks” in Jeddah between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). On Friday reports spoke of continuing clashes in Khartoum.

The Sudanese army says the talks aim to address humanitarian issues.

There has been no official RSF comment.

The army confirmed it had sent envoys to Jeddah to engage in the talks, which the UN and aid agencies have been pressing for, faced with a dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Nearly three weeks of heavy fighting have killed hundreds of people and displaced nearly 450,000 civilians. Of that total, the International Organization for Migration says, more than 115,000 have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.

Sudan’s army commander Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan – the de facto Sudanese president – is engaged in a bitter power struggle with RSF leader Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti.

The statement from the US and Saudi governments said they “urge both parties to take into consideration the interests of the Sudanese nation and its people and actively engage in the talks towards a ceasefire and end to the conflict, which will spare the Sudanese people’s suffering and ensure the availability of humanitarian aid to affected areas”.

The joint statement also expressed hope for “an expanded negotiation process that should include engagement with all Sudanese parties”.

A Unicef spokesman, James Elder, said the conflict’s first 11 days alone had killed an estimated 190 children and wounded 1,700 – and those figures were just from health facilities in Khartoum and Darfur.

“The reality is likely to be much worse,” he said.

The intensity of the fighting has prevented much-needed aid deliveries from getting through.

So far Gen Burhan and Hemedti, who led an Arab militia in the brutal Darfur conflict, have shown little readiness to reach a peace settlement.

Saudi Arabia has released a US citizen from prison more than a year after his conviction over tweets critical of the government.

Saad Ibrahim Almadi, 72, who also has Saudi citizenship, was arrested in November 2021 when he arrived in Riyadh to visit his family.

He was sentenced in October to 16 years in prison. An appeals court increased the term to 19 years last month.

Neither the US nor Saudi authorities have commented on Mr Almadi’s release.

His son, Ibrahim, confirmed his father was at a family residence in Riyadh but said it was not clear when he might return to his home in Florida.

“All charges have been dropped but we have to fight the travel ban now,” Ibrahim told Reuters news agency.

Mr Almadi was found guilty by a court of trying to destabilise the kingdom and of supporting and funding terrorism. He was also issued with a 16-year travel ban.

Speaking about the case publicly for the first time following the verdict, Ibrahim told the BBC that the only evidence finally presented to the court against his father had consisted of 14 tweets.

The tweets, which the BBC saw, included criticism of the demolition of old parts of the cities of Mecca and Jeddah, concern over poverty in the kingdom and a reference to the murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Mr Almadi was also found guilty of not reporting terrorism over tweets that Ibrahim had posted on a separate account, according to his son.

US President Joe Biden said he had raised Mr Almadi’s case, and those of other US citizens who remained under a travel ban in Saudi Arabia, during meetings with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman when he visited last July.

Abdullah Alaoudh, Saudi director at the Freedom Initiative, said Mr Almadi had been wrongfully detained and was only released as a result of tireless campaigning by his son and international pressure.

“There are far too many people in Saudi detention who don’t have the benefit of US citizenship to draw attention to their cases,” he said.

“Almadi’s release shows that strategic pressure works and US officials should continue to press for the release of prisoners and lifting of travel bans.”

Last August, activists said that Nourah al-Qatani, a mother of five children, was given 45 years in prison on charges of “using the internet to tear the country’s social fabric” over anonymous tweets criticising the government.

Salma al-Shehab, a mother of two studying at Leeds University in the UK, was meanwhile sentenced to 34 years by an appeals court that upheld convictions for “providing succour to those seeking to disrupt public order” and publishing “false rumours” on Twitter.

US President Joe Biden says he raised the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a meeting with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

Mr Biden is in Saudi Arabia to rebuild relations, having previously promised to make the country a “pariah” over its human rights record.

He said he had made it clear the killing was “vitally important to me and the United States”.

But he also said the two countries reached agreements on other issues.

Mr Biden’s visit has been criticised as validating the Saudi government following the murder of the US-based dissident journalist Mr Khashoggi in 2018.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was accused by US intelligence agencies of approving the murder.

The prince has always denied the allegations, and Saudi prosecutors blamed “rogue” Saudi agents.

“With respect to the murder of Khashoggi, I raised it at the top of the meeting, making it clear what I thought of it at the time and what I think of it now,” Mr Biden said in a press briefing after the meeting.

“I said very straightforwardly, ‘for an American president to be silent on an issue of human rights is inconsistent with who we are and who I am. I’ll always stand up for our values’.”

Prior to the meeting Mr Biden was pictured fist-bumping the crown prince, indicating an apparent warming of relations between the two countries.

But Mr Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, criticised the president’s actions. Tweeting a photo of the two men along with the words she imagined her fiancé would have said, she wrote: “Is this the accountability you promised for my murder? The blood of MBS’s next victim is on your hands.”

Other than Mr Khashoggi’s murder, President Biden announced Saudi Arabia’s move to open its air space to aircraft flying to and from Israel, which was previously banned.

He also said they had discussed energy – a hot topic in the US – and that he expected to see Saudi Arabia, a major oil producer, take “further steps” to stabilise the market in the coming weeks.

The Chairman pilgrims welfare board, Muslim wing, Prof Sayed Malik was represented by his deputy, Dr. Ibrahim Adebolu.

The Chairman, Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Professor Sayed Malik has denied insinuations that some pilgrims from the state who are already in Saudi Arabia have been denied their Basic Travel Allowance (BTA).

Professor Malik who was reacting to reports being circulated via online channels, said the reports were unfounded and far from the true situation of things at the State’s Hajj camps in Saudi Arabia.

He emphasised that the Muslim Wing of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board has not diverted funds meant for the payment of BTA of the first batch of pilgrims from the state who are currently in Saudi Arabia.

Professor Malik said: “It is not true in any way, that the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing) has diverted funds meant for the payment of BTA of the first batch of pilgrims from the state, who are currently in Saudi Arabia. Such a report can only be a figment of the imagination of the writer.”

“The truth of the matter is that there were delays in the release of BTA to the Board as a result of the late release of the circular guiding the payment of the allowances by the authorities in Abuja. This is not peculiar to Oyo State pilgrims, as all pilgrims across the states are faced with the same situation.”

“As a result of the delay, the first batch of travelers from Oyo State and several other states of the federation had to embark on the trip to Saudi before the BTA could be secured. The delay, however, does not indicate that any of the travelers would lose their entitlements.

“By the time the second batch of travelers were leaving Nigeria, only a fraction of the entire BTA had been secured and it was concluded that each of the travelers be made to get $400 while those who were already in Saudi Arabia were paid $200 each, pending the release of the entire money by the Nigerian authorities.

“It must be placed on record that the dollar scarcity which had hit the foreign exchange market is a key contributor to the delay to secure the required BTA.”

“While the delayed payment of the BTA is regretted, we have to place on record that there is no intention to divert anyone’s entitlement or deny any of the pilgrims their due. We make bold to undertake that each of the pilgrims will get what is approved for them in the course of the holy pilgrimage.”

“The welfare of every pilgrim remains our utmost concern at all times.” Professor Malik added.

The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has issued new rules for airlines transporting pilgrims during the upcoming Hajj season.

The rules cover all airlines working in the kingdom’s airports, including private airlines, regarding the health requirements that should be met by passengers arriving in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj.

According to the new rules, pilgrim passengers should be less than 65 years old and have completed immunizations with basic doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Pilgrim passengers must also submit a negative PCR test for COVID-19 taken within 72 hours prior to departure to the kingdom.

Meanwhile, the national carrier of the country, Saudi Arabian Airlines SAUDIA, has allocated 14 aircraft for pilgrims, which are expected to make 268 international flights from and to 15 stations worldwide, as well as 32 domestic flights.

In total, the airline will be responsible for providing around 107,000 international and 12,800 domestic seats during the Hajj season, it added.

Saudi Arabia announced in April its plan to receive one million domestic and foreign pilgrims during the upcoming Hajj season.

It is the first time that foreign pilgrims will be allowed to perform Hajj after the previous two seasons, which were restricted to domestic pilgrims due to COVID-19 outbreaks.
