In recent years, the quest for an improved standard of living has increasingly seen many people, especially the  youths, leave  their fatherland for other countries of the world where they believe things work better.

It is  therefore not surprising to discover  that a friend, family member, relative or colleague you  saw and communicated with today, would by tomorrow or in no distant time have landed abroad.

In fact, people now easily assume that anyone they haven’t seen in a little while must have JAPA, a yoruba word coined for run, flee or escape and which interestingly has now been registered into the dictionary.

It is worth noting that, in the quest for green pasture,  those taking their flight from the shores of Nigeria,  hardly give a second thought to what might  lie  ahead.

Many of them have even gone to the extent of burning the bridge behind them by selling their properties to raise for their exodus.

Statistics from the Nigerian Immigration Service Information Data Analysis System, MIDAS, reveals that over 3.6million Nigerians migrated from the country in the last two years, while the number is still counting.

Currently, Italy is experiencing a significant influx of African refugees, including many Nigerians, who are among the West Africans arriving by sea.

Ironically,  the fervency for migration at all cost good oes on at a time when some Blacks in the diaspora are yearning to return to their ancestral homeland, embracing the maxim  that ‘there’s no place like home,’

This paradox is particularly evident in Nigeria, where the younger generation is fast losing hope in the country’s future.

They feel disillusioned with the attitude of leaders who seem to prioritize short-term gains at the expense of masse’s welfare and long-term development.

Infact, for many youths in the country, the hope of becoming future leaders looks bleak as they believe the nation’s leaders are not only controlling the rave of the moment but also strategically setting the tone for the future,  positioning their children to take over from them, without the interest of the vast majority at heart.

They feel entrapped in a corrupt system, ensnared in a vicious cycle with no apparent exit strategy or clear escape route.

The harsh socio – economic reality  marked by  soaring unemployment rates, Inflation, insecurity, and incessant strikes in tertiary institutions,  which prolong their studies beyond the normal duration,  have also created a sense of desperation among the youths to leave the country

Today, The JAPA syndrome is currently exacting a devastating toll on the health sector, among other critical sectors of the economy, with innocent lives bearing the brunt of the consequences.

Brain drain has thus comes at a huge! cost, undermining Nigeria’s prospects for growth and prosperity.”

Undoubtedly, human capital remains Nigeria’s most valuable  asset as the nation’s future relies heavily on the creative potential, innovative ideas, and capabilities of its youth to drive progress and development.

Sadly, the exodus of young people fleeing Nigeria in desperation due to inefficient systems, corrupt institutions, and poor planning is a devastating loss, as each departing individual takes with him or her  a vital piece of the country’s future potential.

While some individuals are slowly finding stability abroad, others are secretly grappling with tales of hardship, but bearing it for fear of being ridiculed or mocked by their friends back home in Nigeria, having realized the pasture is not as green as they thought.

Though migration is not an unusual occurrence in human existence, it is very  vital to approach such junction of life with careful consideration and guidance, as any decision taken can either make or mar a person’s destiny.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong in anyone migrating to other countries of the world for advancement in life, individuals embarking on such moves must ask themselves these among other critical questions;

Why I’m i migrating?

What are the laws of the land I’m migrating to?

Do i possess the necessary and lawful documents to travel?

Do i possess the needed skill to secure jobs?

The ability to respond to this questions should also be accompanied by seeking wise counsel from experienced and knowledgeable people,  for knowledge is power.

A wiseman does not just launch into the river, he must know the depth and danger zones before throwing his body into the river to swim.

It is also not out of place to seek divine guidance through prayers and personal meditation as only God sees the end from the beginning,! because He created and controls time and seasons.

To stem the increasing scourge of brain drain being witnessed in the country, governments should prioritize establishing industries and improving living standards, making home a comfortable and attractive option for citizens.”

Let this however be a note of caution that youths should never allow any situation  push them into frustration and  hasty decisions  as  such can lead to serious regrets and setback.

If only one can reflect deeply, with the inner eyes wide open, the greener pastures may just be very close and not as far as you imagine !

Culture

One of the values of the African culture is to appear decent in looks and actions.

This decent behaviour is part of the factors that formed the Omoluabi concept in Yoruba culture.

Although, it may be legally difficult to determine indecent dressing, considering the different cultures and religions in the country. Some dressings, however, may be offensive to human reasoning.

Radio Nigeria examines perceived indecent dressing among male folks.

A young man’s earing.

It is no longer news that men, especially, the youths now wear earrings and often times plait their hair.

Some others also sag their trousers exposing their panties.

These types of dressings are believed to be indecent by a section of the public, some youths gave justification for their choice of dressings.

An elderly man who decried the decadence in the society explained that it was unwholesome for the male youths to plait their hair, saying that it was offensive to the Yoruba culture. He also blamed the problems on the importation of western culture into the country.

Two clerics, Mr Bakare Ojo and Sheik Quazeem Ibrahim condemned the trend saying it contradicted their religious beliefs.

A traditionalist, Mr Samson Iyade said it was morally right for sango worshippers to plait their hair in reference to the god of thunder.

Mr Iyade, however, added that the traditional religion did not support other types of dressings that were offensive to human reasoning.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Book day, a senior librarian, at the University of Ibadan, Pastor Daniel Jimoh has implored Nigerian youths to stop devoting their time to social media and engage in book reading.

Pastor Jimoh stated this while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the commemoration of this year’s World Books day.

Pastor Jimoh pointed out that no library existed without intellectual materials that were beneficial to mankind.

The librarian observed that most youths in Nigeria had developed cold attitude towards reading.

He noted with concern that technology and social media had impacted negatively on textual reading, adding that book reading gave the reader firsthand contact with an author’s mindset and flow of thought while most readable items via online media were exposed to undue interference.

Pastor Jimoh therefore, urged Nigerians to take advantage of World Book Day, which is a global initiative to celebrate and encourage the reading of books.

In her own point of view,a teacher, Mrs Adebanjo Sogelola said the government should encourage book reading by providing reading facilities for students and members of the public.

The theme for this year’s World Book Day is,You are a reader.

News Analysis

Over the years, mainstream media played a pivotal role in information dissemination to the public, upon which decision of the people is formed about a particular subject.

The media has played important role in influencing the opinions and attitudes of its viewers and listeners, as the choice of words of news stories and images on a particular group of people speaks volumes about the public perception and inform their belief about such.

During the elections, women are the most visible and in the forefront of leading songs with different types of uniforms to eulogize aspirants and candidates in elections who are often their male counterparts, while most women who contest political posts are manipulated and frustrated out from the race by the male stakeholders who mostly hold key party positions.

Similarly, youths who should be an element of peace and development are usually portrayed by the media as objects of thuggery while the people with disabilities have low or even no representation because of limitations of their physical appearance making them the most ostracized during elections, either as voters or candidates.

However, the inclusion of women, youths and people with disabilities in the electoral system will undoubtedly create a just, fair and equitable society, promote peace and enhance human cohesion.

To achieve this, it behoves on broadcast media to go out of their comfort zones to hear and air the views of these groups over that of the majority who govern the system.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as an election umpire has set machinery in motion especially for people with disabilities through the provision of magnifying glasses, braille papers and special voting queues.

These should adequately be monitored and publicized for the people with disabilities to have more confidence in the capacity of INEC and serve as an encouragement for them to participate in future elections.

Pieces of evidence abound that the opportunities provided by INEC to incorporate people with disabilities in the electoral process are still faced with some challenges.

For example, during the last governorship election, the EC30C Form provided for people with disabilities was not adequately utilized by ad-hoc staff because of complaints of inadequate time resulting in some polling units recording zero for people with disabilities.

The broadcast medium being the most accessible to the larger population should put INEC on its toes in ensuring that adequate provision was made in the process to allow this category of people exercise their franchise.

It is also important that media organisations give more coverage to women and youths by promoting policies and programmes that would give spaces for equity in social development.

The media should desist from derogatory phases that could further lead to injury on the emotions and interests of this group of people.

It is also believed that the extension of polling units across the country would further improve participation of women, youths and people with disabilities but the media has a duty to hold the electoral body responsible regarding the implementation of its policies not only on paper but in reality for the benefit of the people.

Crime

As part of efforts to engage the student community in the campaign against cybercrime, the Ibadan Zonal Commander of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Kanu Idagu, has advised the youth to desist from cybercrime, warning that it could ruin their lives.

He gave this charge on Thursday, October 7, 2021, while delivering a lecture on Information and Communication Technology and Social Order at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ibadan.

Kanu who was represented by the Head of Economic Governance of the Command, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, David  Nkpe, defined cybercrime as any form of an illegal act perpetrated by using the internet and other electronic means to obtain money from unsuspecting victims.

He advised the youths to focus on self-development and redirect their energy into positive activities that will benefit them and society. “It is better to start humble and grow steadily than spend time in jail. Be content, work hard and you will definitely get to the top,” he said.

According to him, the EFCC is exploring all avenues to dissuade Nigerians from embracing corrupt practices in order not to dent the country’s reputation. He said the Commission was ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to find ways of encouraging the students to use their youthful energies in a positive manner, adding that there are enormous opportunities through the internet.

He said the youths should realize that cybercrime has effects that could destroy their future.

Kanu expressed dismay that some families openly encourage the criminal activities of their children because of the benefits they derive from such activities and then justify it with the high rate of unemployment and poverty in Nigeria.

He assured that the Commission remains steadfast in its determination to reduce cybercrime to the barest minimum in the country.

The Head of Department, Professor E. Nwokocha thanked the EFCC for considering the invitation and bringing the practical lessons to bear in the students’ experience. “This will no doubt serve as warning shots and equip the students to steer clear of these crimes and serve as the vanguard for social order,” he stated.
