As the 2023 general election draws nearer, corps members participating in the election have been advised to be security conscious and adhere strictly to the rules guiding their conduct during the polls.
Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Muhammad Fadah gave the warning during the swearing in ceremony of the 2022 batch C stream 1 corps members held at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Iseyin.
Speaking through the Oyo State coordinator of the scheme, Mrs Grace Ogbuogebe, Brigadier General Fadah said corps members have been duly fortified with security information ahead of the elections.
He noted that the corps members needed to eschew unimportant journeys before, during and after the elections.
“We are not scared about the election and this is not the first time corps members will be participating in the elections. INEC has memorandum of understanding with NYSC. We have warned our corps members not to embark on night journeys. They should avoid free lift”
Brigadier General Fadah called on relevant stakeholders in the country to support the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund which he said had reached an advanced stage.
He explained that the trust fund when approved would enhance the smooth operations of the scheme by addressing challenges of infrastructure and providing start up capital for corps members.
The NYSC Director General who requested the support of relevant bodies in the country to support the success of the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, HIRD, noted that the scheme when operational had the aim of providing easier access to free and qualitative healthcare for the rural people.” May I also request all stakeholders to render support towards the success of our Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, HIRD, which was aimed at providing easier access to free and qualitative healthcare especially for the rural poor”.
He enjoined the corps members to eschew social vices and the use of social media in fuelling hatred and fake news. Brigadier General Fadah added that corps members should get themselves well equipped with training offered through SAED programme saying that the scheme would continue to work with relevant stakeholders towards achieving success of the programme.
Brigadier General Fadah advised corps members to abide by the rules guiding NYSC camping and avail themselves of skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programmes put in place by the scheme for their self-sustenance in future.
Radio Nigeria observed that 1,457 corps members comprising 499 males and 958 females were posted to Oyo State while 710 corps members were drafted from Lagos to Oyo State NYSC orientation camp for the three weeks orientation exercise.
The corps members were earlier administered an oath of allegiance by the Chief Judge of Oyo state, Justice Murktar Abimbola who was represented at the occasion by Justice Iyabo Yerima.
