Governor Makinde said Oba Olakuleyin would be enthroned as the next Olubadan as soon as his current health condition improve pointing out that the recommendation for his enthronement as the next king in Ibadanland  would follow follow due process.

Governor Makinde said Oba Balogun would be greatly missed for his wisdom in Ibadanland and be remembered for his contributions to the growth and development of Ibadan and Oyo State.

The governor lauded the late Oba Balogun for working with the state government to achieve the seamless review of the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration in 2023.

Makinde said: “One thing I want us to take home today is that Kabiyesi Lekan Balogun and I did what people thought Napoleon could not do.

“The Executive Arm of government and the Legislature, on the 26th of May, 2023, amended the Chieftaincy law of Oyo State, so that the governor does not need to go to the Council of Chiefs to amend the declaration of traditional rulers.

“Kabiyesi Olubadan and I amended the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration. Those who are yet to see the document can go and look for it to confirm. That is the declaration to enthrone the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

“I have seen the recommendation of the Olubadan-in-Council and I have accepted it. Oba Olakulehin would be enthroned soon, because due process has been followed.”

“So, I want to once again thank you all and to console the family. We all lost Baba but we should take solace in the fact that Baba lived a very fulfilled life,” the governor said.

Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) and Executive Adviser on Agribusiness to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, Dr Debo Akande, has stated that a French firm, SEMMARIS-Rungis International Market, is set to support the establishment of an international wholesale agribusiness market in the state.

He stated this when a delegation of the firm, including its Head of International Projects, Timothée Witkowski and Consultant-Market Specialist, Steve Allen, paid a courtesy visit to the governor in Ibadan.

According to the OYSADA DG, the investors plan to complement the Makinde administration’s efforts in the agribusiness sector with the establishment of the market, which would be a major market for agribusiness and for farmers.

He added that the investors had, before the visit to the governor, gone round the state to see the infrastructure built by the governor in the last five years, the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub and major markets in the state.

Akande said: “What they plan to do is to support us in establishing the International Wholesale Agribusiness Market in Oyo State, most likely in Ibadan.

“This is to complement a lot of work the governor has been doing in agribusiness in the state. This will be a major market for agribusiness and for farmers as well. They have gone round to see most of the facilities that have been built by the governor in the past five years. They have been to lseyin-Moniya road, Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub, Bodija Market, Akinyele Market and others to see what is currently on ground and what they can do to advance on that.

“What they have in France, which we are mirroring ourselves after, is a global market, the largest wholesale market globally and we have seen it. If you go there by 5 a.m, you won’t see anybody because most of the products in that place have been taken by trailers, moving to diverse places in Europe.

“So, we are anticipating that the growth of agribusiness and agriculture within our state would demand us to have that kind of a centralised system for the wholesale agricultural market. We are building and developing the foundation and when things grow as we are building agricultural industrial hubs in different locations including Fasola, Eruwa, Ijaye, this would be needed and would be required.”

The OYSADA DG added that the direct benefit of the wholesale market to the people of the state is that the state is becoming highly industrialised and also helping to develop a systematic approach to what farmers in the state would be producing.

“If a big company wants to come and buy two million tonnes of cassava or yam packed, where will they be getting them from? Currently, they source from different farms and villages, but they would not need to do that any longer because most of these things would be centralised in a place where the farmers can sell them.

“The farmers will have companies to sell to and these companies can now sell to big companies, which is the concept behind wholesale.

“If you have a large company that is interested in using cashew, use soya beans or process products as well, it knows the centralised place to come and pick in high volume. It is not now to go to different farms and villages to get 2 tonnes, 3 tonnes and what have you. And this means access to markets for our farmers. It means our farmers will now have access to sell their products at a good price.”

He maintained that apart from the infrastructure and facilities put in place by Governor Makinde, the state has improved security with the creation of the Oyo State Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun, while it has also been increasing its resources on security and will continue to do so.

Earlier, SEMMARIS-Rungis’ Head of International Projects, Witkowski, said Oyo State had great potential and that its central location and the efforts of Governor Makinde had made it a strategic location for the development of wholesale infrastructure for food supply in Nigeria.

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde has declared that another tranche of N2 billion has been paid to the immediate past All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government Chairmen in the state as part of their entitlements

Governor Makinde made this known at the burial and thanksgiving service in honour of Mama Ruth Adenihun Dare, mother of former Minister of Youth and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare, held at Sabo Baptist Church, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The governor said the action put an end to the long-drawn battle the ex-ALGON members had with him following their sack in 2019.

Recall that the state government had in 2021 released the sum of N1 billion to the ex-chairmen in fulfillment of the Supreme Court judgment that the sacked chairmen be paid their entitlements.

Governor Makinde reiterated that residents of the state must be cautious not to fight one another over politics, as politicians always have a way of settling their differences.

He added that his presence in Ogbomoso to honour Chief Dare, an APC chieftain, was an indication that politics should never be in the way of humanity.

Describing the event as the celebration of the life of Mama Dare, whose good character can be seen in her children, the governor prayed to God to continually uphold Chief Dare and everyone Mama left behind.

He said: “We are here to celebrate our Mama. It is a day of celebration because Mama was 92 before she died.

“I am sure Chief Sunday Dare must have thought I wouldn’t attend this event because we don’t belong to the same party. I tell people not to fight because of politicians because it is not worth it. This is because we do a lot of other things together behind the curtain.

“When I took over as governor in 2019, I decided to sack all the Local Government chairmen because we felt their election was unconstitutional.

“As a result, they also took me to court for the government to pay their entitlements. We dragged the matter up to the Supreme Court level. But, on Friday, I paid N2 billion out of the debt. So, we are no longer fighting.”

Governor Makinde equally noted that he would return to Ogbomoso in a few weeks to commission the 78.6km Ogbomoso-Iseyin-Fapote Road named after former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to developing the infrastructure across all zones of the state and linking the zones together in line with his economic expansion agenda

“I want to also greet the Aseyin of Iseyinland, Kabiyesi Oba Sefiu Oyebola. There has been progress in this land during his reign. The developments that each zone in the state has witnessed since Governor Makinde came on board are remarkable and I believe we all want all of these to continue.

Labour

By Iyabo Adebisi

Oyo State Governor, Engineer ‘Seyi Makinde, has announced a six-month extension of the payment of N25,000 and N15,000 wage award to civil servants and pensioners in the state.

The governor, who made the announcement at the inauguration of the 12.5 kilometres Challenge-Odo Ona Elewe-Apata Road, said the extension became important to allow the Federal Government to conclude negotiations with the labour unions on a minimum wage.

Governor Makinde said his administration had continued to meet the expectations of workers and pensioners since it got on board in May 2019 and that it would continue to do so because it is a government that puts people first.

He said: “When this economic crisis started, we gave wage awards to workers. We started in October and said it would be for six months.

“I wanted that time to be able to sort out what the minimum wage should be. We have not been able to achieve that. So, I am announcing that the wage award will be extended by another six months to give us time to close out on the minimum wage discussion and negotiation.”

Speaking further on the economic situation of the country, Makinde charged Nigerians to keep their heads up amid the difficult times being faced by Nigerians and to join hands to make the country great again.

Governor Makinde noted that despite criticism against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, which recently spoke out on the situation in the country, he and his colleagues will remain undeterred and will soon come up with an action plan that will work for the country.

“Let me use this opportunity to talk about the meeting we had a few days ago. We the Governors of the PDP met in Abuja and one of the key issues we discussed was the economic hardship our people are facing.

“Our focus this time is to help our people overcome the challenges of the time. Some people can continue to play politics and tell lies about how things are, it does not matter.

“I read a piece where some people said FAAC has doubled for states and local government areas. I think it is just a lazy way to situate things. We must be talking about baking a bigger cake.

“Why are we even going to Abuja in the first instance to share FAAC? Were they doing that in the First Republic? Yes, FAAC has moved up from about N6bn per month to about N8bn monthly but the responsibilities of government have also increased.

“We all know the reality of the time, no matter how anyone tries to paint it. And, in the weeks and months to come, our dear party will propose an action plan that we believe would work for our nation when adopted.

“In doing this, we again demonstrate that we care more about the progress of our people than we do about politics. It is just like here in Oyo State where we fix roads that have economic importance whether they belong to the state or federal,” Makinde said.

He appreciated Governor Mbah for honouring the state with his presence, saying that his administration would deliver more dividends of democracy in line with his Roadmap for Sustainable Development, 2023-2027.

In his speech ahead of commissioning the road, the Enugu State governor lauded Makinde for building a lasting legacy in the state, saying: “With the interconnectivity of this project, you can see that the construction and completion did not happen by accident.

There was a design and concept meant to provide the people of Oyo State with the ease of doing their business, movement and transportation.

“What is at the epicentre of this project today is the people of Oyo State, and that is what the administration of my brother has continually underscored.

“So, I want to salute you for your decisiveness and progressiveness, which underscore what our great party, the PDP, represents in governance. Our party knows that government is about the collective interest of the people but not narrow interest.”

The report, which comprises findings of the Medical, Security and Engineering Teams, was presented to the governor at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the presentation of the report, the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, former Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni said that three persons of interest have been identified in connection with the cause of the unfortunate incident.

Mr Owoseni assured that the state government would bring the perpetrators to book, adding that the government would check on the immigration status of all the people of interest since a majority of them are from Mali.

Mr. Woseni also disclosed that, the character of the explosive is known as a “Water Gel Type Based Explosive” and that the explosion was triggered by an electric spark, noting that a Closed Circuit Television in one of the affected houses gave footage of how the incident happened.

He said: “We have been able to report that the swiftness with which security was deployed to the epi-centre had so far successfully made the state fully secure the environment. And with the security that was provided, the state has also been able to prevent untoward happenings, especially opportunistic crimes that hoodlums always take advantage of such situations to carry out.

“We would recall that an emergency centre was put in place by the governor and was located at the premises of Oyo State Housing Corporation, Ibadan.

“The EOC has so far collated information, data of things that happened there and some of the data collated include census of the respective houses and the fatalities that were affected including the extent of losses suffered.

“As of 6 p.m. on Friday, 3rd of February, which was the 18th day of the incident, a total of 335 affected persons registered at the emergency centre including 16 companies or business operators, churches, mosques, three schools and the UCH also approached the centre to report on their losses.

“The losses reported also include fatality, injuries of various degrees, damages ranging from total collapse and submerging of houses, houses that suffered collateral damage and the ones that suffered minimal damages.”

Also, the chairman, of the Nigeria Institute of Structural Engineers, Mbim Okutinyang, who is also the lead coordinator of the team that carried out structural integrity on the affected houses, said his team covered 282 houses and that only four of the houses would have to be demolished due to the degrees of the damage.

He, however, added that the seismic report was still being awaited.

The Head of the Emergency Operation Centre, Professor Temitope Alonge, said 80 victims in total were managed across various hospitals following the incident but that only five patients were on admission as of the time of the press conference.

He explained that four of the patients are being treated at the University College Hospital, UCH, and are at various levels of recovery, while one patient is at a private Hospital being managed for a spinal cord injury.

Professor added that some of the affected victims that experienced medical disorders such as respiratory illness had been treated, while those with symptoms suggestive of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are being attended to by clinical psychologists from UCH, led by Mrs Funmi Olowa.

Giving an update on the tests for radioactivity, Alonge said the site of the incident has been cleared in terms of radioactivity, as the EOC invited the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Agency, NNRA, to conduct another screening on Sunday, 4th February and “the good news is that there were no radiations outside of normal.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has inaugurated the 9-member State Elders’ Council, calling on its members to provide his administration with robust suggestions and feedback from across the state.

The council, which has its members drawn from all the zones of the state, was inaugurated at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

The Elders’ Council has a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees and former Chief of Staff to Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, Dr Saka Balogun, as chairman while a former Minister of Steel Development, Elder Wole Oyelese is to serve as co-chairman.

Other members of the Council are former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Hamid Gbadamosi, wife of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja; Chief Chief Mrs Mutiat Ladoja,  Jacob Adetoro; Chief Adedamola Eyinade; Alhaji Nureni Akanbi, Ambassador Ronke Adefowope and Chief Sunday Ogunlade.

Speaking before pronouncing the Council inaugurated, Governor Makinde said his administration had done well in transforming Oyo State in terms of its politics and governance.

The governor made a particular reference to the peaceful conduct of the House of Assembly by-election in Saki West Local Government, where the ruling PDP lost, saying that the result showed that he had moved Oyo State away from the politics of violence and win-at-all-costs syndrome, which used to be the order of the day before he assumed office in 2019.

He said: “We are just coming from a by-election, which we lost three days ago. First, it is a demonstration that, in Oyo State, we have moved away from the politics of brigandage and getting results at all costs because we allow the will of the people to prevail.

“But we are proud that it is our state and we are not doing anything to jeopardise the peace, progress, and development of our state.”

He added that his administration did its best to uplift the state during the first four years of his first term and had built on that achievement in the last eight months of his second term.

He, however, noted that the government is aware that there is still room for improvement and would stop at nothing to ensure that residents of the state get the best of service.

The Governor said, “We did our best on the four pillars of our administration during the first term. We have some areas which we need to improve upon and the Elders’ Council will provide the platform to look at those areas where we need improvement and come up with suggestions.

“Let me commit that every other month, I will be having a scheduled meeting with the Elders’ Council so that you can contribute, and for us to have a remarkable difference from how we operated in the first term.”

Security

By Iyabo Adebisi

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde has said the state would continue to provide more support to the security agencies and strengthen the security architecture to keep residents of the state safe and secure and maintain peace and order.

The governor stated this at The Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan, during a service to commemorate the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration Church service.

Governor Makinde, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government ( SSG), Proffersor Olanike Adeyemo, stated that the state government would not relent in pursuing a cause that would further boost the morale of security agents so that they can do more in securing Oyo State.

He added that the state has been showing its appreciation for the sacrifices of the officers and men of the Armed Forces through different means, including providing logistic and welfare support to encourage them to do their jobs effectively.

He said: “Our gathering here today is in continuation of a worthy tradition, as it is being done all over the nation, to celebrate and honour the sacrifices, patriotic passion and gallantry of the Men and Officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“It is one thing for us to gather every year to eulogise these patriotic and brave men and women, but as Ronald Reagan once enjoined ‘if words cannot repay the debt we owe these men, surely with our actions we must strive to keep faith with them and with the vision that led them to battle and to final sacrifice.

“Therefore, during these commemorative activities, more than ever before, it is pertinent to ask ourselves individually and collectively how we are honouring and supporting these brave and gallant men and women, who even as we speak, are being attacked, maimed, and killed by non-state actors like Boko Haram, bandits, kidnappers, and others.

“On our part as Oyo State Government, we are showing in practical terms our deep appreciation for the sacrifices of our gallant patriots. Just last week, we handed over an additional 100 operational vehicles to security agencies in the state to strengthen the security architecture in the State.

“We are also grateful for the profound collaboration we are enjoying with the Nigerian Armed Forces, especially those with command locations in our state.

The governor also used the opportunity of the event to appreciate the Nigerian Legion for its effort in maintaining the comradeship of servicemen and servicewomen after retirement.

He enjoined individuals and prominent people in the state to always honour and support the Armed Forces and other allied security agencies, who are valiantly working to maintain internal peace, harmony and safety, as well as guarding the country’s borders against external attacks.

Earlier, the Diocesan Bishop of the Ibadan Anglican Diocese, Rt Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, thanked the governor and the government for making the state enviable through various unprecedented developmental projects.

While appreciating the men and women of the Nigerian Legion and the Armed Forces for their sacrifices of love and labour, he also charged them to continue to serve the nation and humanity wholeheartedly, assuring them of God’s rewards for their faithful service.

Special prayers were offered for Nigeria, Oyo State, the Armed Forces and the family of the fallen heroes.
