The signing-in ceremony which done at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s, Secretariat, Ibadan was witnessed by the representatives of the Olubadan in Council, Balogun of Ibadan, High Chief, Owolabi Olakunleyina and other traditional rulers across the state

Speaking shortly after the ascent, Governor Makinde said contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the amended chiefs laws was to ensure smooth running of the traditional institution in Oyo state.

Governor Makinde, while noting that his government would always follow due process in traditional institution, appreciated the traditional council in the state for their patient and understanding for the assent of the law.

Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Mohammad Fadeyi noted that the house examined thoroughly the inputs of stakeholders before the passage of the bill Chiefs Law, Cap 28.

Mr Fadeyi was optimistic that the law would be of great benefit to the people of the state.

Oyo State House of Assembly had early this week passed a bill, Chiefs Law, Cap 28, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

With the passage, the State legislature has now substituted sub-section (1) of section 28 with a new clause.

The initial provision of Sub-section (1) which read ” The Governor may cause such inquiries to be held at such times and in such places and by such person or persons as it or he may consider necessary or desirable ” has now been substituted with “The Governor may cause such inquiries to be held at such times and in such places and by such person or persons as he may consider necessary or desirable.

To this end, former Clause (3) has now become Clause (4) hence the new Sub-section (3) now reads “Any person who pursuant to subsection (1) of this section is elevated to wear beaded crown from Baales to Minor Chiefs who being a customary tenant shall continue to pay obeisance to his prescribed or consenting authority. “

Recall that, the Oyo State House of Assembly had on Friday 12th May, 2023 held a public hearing on the proposed amendment where opinions of all stakeholders were aggregated.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde had said in the letter requesting for the amendment that, ” As part of the ongoing efforts of the present administration to specify the Chieftaincy holders entitled to wear beaded crowns in Oyo State, the Executive council has considered the need to amend the Chiefs Law of Oyo State. This is as a result of agitation of many High Chiefs on the issue of beaded crowns and the volume of litigations and resentment within communities in the State.

“These lessons, ranging from love, to sacrificial living and selflessness form the very core of the Christian faith and they must always reflect in our daily lives.
“But as God would have it, He seems to be emphasising another important lesson on peaceful and harmonious coexistence, as the Easter season, again, coincides with the holy month of Ramadan. So, this is another indication that our harmonious coexistence is approved by God.
“It is as if God is saying to us all again, love your neighbour as yourself. “As we go about celebrating Easter, I pray that the joys of the season fill our lives.

Residents of Nigeria’s first housing estate, Bodija Estate, said they no longer sleep, day and night courtesy of the many night clubs in the area.

Apart from that, they said they cannot come in and go out of their various houses from 9 pm till 4 am because cars are parked indiscriminately on both sides of the road and any other available spaces.

They also added that they have been exposed to security breaches by the unregulated ways the Oyo State Housing Corporation is conducting its affairs in Bodija.

We are miffed by the development in Bodija estate as residents. And we think it is time to speak up for the public and maybe the governor for the governor know what we are facing.

“We know that the ‘conversion’ of Bodija Estate to commercial plots did not start today. We believe that we are in a changing world. And that was why we decided to be quiet when the Oyo State Housing Corporation started giving approval for nightclubs. Most times, our wives and daughters have been harassed by clubbers. We have had to wait, for several hours, to enter our various homes because someone who has used his car to block our entrance.

“In the last few days, we have not been able to sleep. If it is not the many speakers hung everywhere at these numerous clubs, the way they parked their cars have become a source of worry for us.

“We cannot continue this way. We want the government and the approving agency to do something. We may be force to take the legal option. Good, night clubs have been approved against the rule setting up the estate. But there should be regulations about how they operate. We are not in local areas, our lives shouldn’t be endangered by these people.”
